prepare the specimen and study the microstructure, identify the different
constituents and make a neat sketch of each with observation.
2.
All the specimen should be studied by each in turn and include in the
report.
REMARKS:
Attach a S-curve with the report.
QUESTIONS:
1.
What is full annealing and process annealing?
2.
What are the differences between full annealing and normalizing? On a
Fe-C diagram
show the full annealing and normalizing zone.
3.
With respect to time, temperature and cooling rate, state how does
homogenizing differ from normalizing.
4.
How does the cooling rate affect the microstructure and properties of
steel.

MOUNTING OF AWKWARD THIN SPECIMEN FOR METALLOGRAPHIC STUDY
Object of Experiment:
301

Experiment No:

To know the Mounting procedure of awkwardly thin specimen for

Metalloraphic study.
Specimen: Thin and awkward Metallic Specimen
Microscope:
Make. Magnification
.
Laboratory Procedure:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Place the specimen on the block.

Cylinder is now placed over the block so that it covers the block entirely.
Pour Bakelite powder inside the block proportionately .
Place the entire assembly on the mounting machine .
Put the plunger on the cylinder.
Heater coils should be placed around the cylinder.
Apply pressure upto 3000-3500 p.s.i. when this pressure is shown on the dial,
put on the heater switch.
8. When the Bakelite powder begins to set , the pressure drops down and again
maintains the pressure around3000-3500 p.s.i.

9. When the setting of powder becomes complete, there will be automatic rise
of pressure.
10.Put off the switch at this point.
11.Then by ejection the sample is taken out.
Questions:

Remarks:

1. What are the materials used for mounting irregular and awkwardly thin
specimen?
2. What is the temperature to which it is heated?
3. Why thermosetting plastics are used in mounting of the specimens?
4. Sketch the mounding press.
