Available Positions:
Electro-Mechanical Exhibit Engineer
Designer / Draftsman
Project Manager

Electro-Mechanical Exhibit Design and Fabrication Engineer

Are you a "hacker" or a "maker". . . except that the quality of your work is too high to ever be called a "hack" or wind up in Make
magazine? Or perhaps you have been designing and building museum exhibits, theater sets, theme park attractions, and special effects
professionally for years.
5 Wits Productions is seeking a hands-on jack-of-all-trades with experience in all aspects of exhibit and attraction design, development,
engineering, and fabrication.
We build exhibits and special effects ranging from a laser tunnel, to Captain Nemo's nautilus, to a cannon that blows a hole in an
exterior wall every 15 minutes to a bomb defusing simulation. See some specifics at http://www.5witsproductions.com/projects.htm.
Our clients include the Smithsonian, Blue Man Group, the Boston Museum of Science, The International Spy Museum, and Walt Disney
Imagineering.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The work is highly creative and requires an independent thinker who will self-start and work largely unsupervised with excellent
collaboration skills. There's no room for ego here, as we all do "whatever needs to be done" to produce a winning guest experience.
Responsibilities will include the stewarding of projects from start to finish, being part of the design and engineering on the front end,
and taking the projects right through the prototyping and fabrication process to play-testing and installation. Our projects merge realworld physical interfaces with high-tech control and audio/visual elements. Knowledge of fabrication methods and materials is a must-this is not an academic position, the more hands on experience, the better.
Our work varies widely from project to project, with the opportunity for the right individual to define their niche here in this rapidly
growing company. You might be a mechanical engineer, you might be an electrical engineer, or your background may be something
else entirely. . . but if your skills overlap all of these areas and you aren't afraid to get your hands dirty, you could be a fit for us. Our
clients range from museums and theaters, to theme parks and our own award-winning adventure attractions.
We are a close-nit team of multi-talented individuals, seeking to add another well-rounded person to our group. It's a fun work
environment, and we would like to keep it that way, even as we grow.

REQUIREMENTS
RELEVANT INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
Minimum: 3 years

Ideally: 10+ years, knowledge of exhibit design principles, ADA standards, skilled at envisioning the entire guest "experience"
EDUCATION
Minimum: school of hard knocks

Ideally: electrical and/or mechanical engineering degrees

PERSONAL
Minimum: honest, dedicated, high-energy, low-maintenance

Ideally: persistent, attentive to the details, organized, incredibly intelligent

MECHANICAL DESIGN/BUILD EXPERIENCE
Minimum: skill selecting materials (including woods, plastics, metals) optimized for the specific application. Significant hands-on
craftsmanship experience with wood-working, metal-working, prototyping, product design, exhibit or set construction, etc.

Ideally: Great expertise in all of the above, plus experience designing with moving components, knowledge of motors,
pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings and linkages, etc. If you have sections of the McMaster-Carr catalog memorized, that's a very
good sign.
DESIGNS & DRAWINGS
Minimum: experienced reading construction and/or wiring drawings of all types

Ideally: you have the ability to not only read, but also to create your own shop drawings as a project may require. Hand-drawing
skill can also be very helpful.
SOFTWARE KNOWLEDGE
Minimum: Microsoft Office and your choice of design software

Ideally: We use all of the following. . . AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Sketchup, Rhino, Adobe Create Suite, various CAM packages for CNC
router and mill, various circuit design and PCB layout software.
ELECTRICAL
Minimum: comfort and familiarity with AC/DC wiring and control

Ideally: experience controlling electro-mechanical systems, knowledge of electrical codes and components
ELECTRONIC
Minimum: understanding of the basic principles of control and comfort working with electricity, interest in learning more fast

5 Wits Productions, Inc.

Ideally: capable of analog/digital circuit design, experience designing custom PCBs, knowledge of PLCs and microcontrollers,
particularly Arduino, experience with control and feedback, sensors or all types, control of stepper motors, servos, VFDs, LEDs
and other lighting and sound.
PROGRAMMING
Minimum: ability to program in some relevant language, and a mastery of typical IT topics on a PC.

Ideally: if we can dream, you are experienced programming in C++, Python, HTML, Flash, ladder logic (for PLCs), LabView, visual
basic, etc, etc. Experience with both PC-based interactives as well as custom electro-mechanical systems that use a
microcontroller (like Arduino).
Yes, That's a tall order. We've listed a lot of skills covering a very wide range of experience.
Minimum: you are excited by this. This is the job you have been searching for. You have most of these skills and want to fill in
the gaps. You learn fast, either from others or from the wonders of the internet, and you are excited to push yourself.
