Introduction

1. INTRODUCTION
The Inforce IFC946X delivers unprecedented embedded computer features in an extremely power
efficient, low-profile Pico-ITX platform. Powered by the Intel Atom Processor E6xx, the IFC946X is
packed with crucial features that solve todays design challenges for connectivity, user interface, storage
and size. These features make the platform ideal for demanding applications including point-of-sale
terminals, digital signage, kiosks and other all-in-one (AIO) system solutions that require reliable
operation in difficult environments.

2.1.1 FORM FACTOR

IFC946X is Pico-ITX (Pico-ITX (100 millimetre [3.9 inches] x 72 millimetres [2.8 inches])form factor board

2.1.2 PROCESSOR
IFC946X includes a Tunnel Creek - Intel Atom E6xx and can support SKUs 600MHz, 1GHz 1.3GHz and
1.6 GHz. processor. The processor is soldered to the Board and is not field-upgradeable..
NOTE
The board is designed to be passively cooled in a properly ventilated chassis. Chassis venting
locations are recommended above the processor heatsink area for maximum heat dissipation
effectiveness. The final colling requirement of the board will depend on the In-system temperatures
and accordingly a cooling solution has to be designed.

2.1.3 SYSTEM MEMORY

IFC946X Board can support either 512 MB or 1 GB of DDR2 800 MHz memory. The system memory is
soldered on the board directly and hence cannot be field upgraded.

Installing Board Components

3. INSTALLING BOARD COMPONENTS

This chapter tells you how to:
 Connect SATA drives
 Connect internal headers
 Connect Front Panel header
 Connect Power Adapter
 Replace the battery

3.1 BEFORE YOU BEGIN

CAUTION
The procedures in this chapter assume familiarity with the general terminology associated with
personal computers and with the safety practices and regulatory compliance required for using and
modifying electronic equipment.
Disconnect the Development kit from its power source and from any telecommunications links,
networks, or modems before performing any of the procedures described in this chapter. Failure to
disconnect power, telecommunications links, networks, or modems before you open the
Development kit or perform any procedures can result in personal injury or equipment damage.
Some circuitry on the board can continue to operate even though the front panel power button is
off.
Follow these guidelines before you begin installing the IFC946X Board:

Always follow the steps in each procedure in the correct order.

Set up a log to record information about your Development kit, such as model, serial
numbers, installed options, and configuration information.
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage components. Perform the procedures described in
this chapter only at an ESD workstation using an antistatic wrist strap and a conductive foam
pad. If such a station is not available, you can provide some ESD protection by wearing an
antistatic wrist strap and attaching it to a grounded surface.

3.2 INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS

When you install and test the Inforce Board, observe all warnings and cautions in the installation
instructions.
To avoid injury, be careful of:
Sharp pins on connectors or headers
Sharp pins on printed circuit assemblies
Rough edges and sharp corners on the chassis
Hot components (such as voltage regulators and heat sinks)
Damage to wires that could cause a short circuit
Observe all warnings and cautions and contact qualified technical personnel, if required.
Use only the proper power supply.

Installing Board Components

3.3 PREVENT POWER SUPPLY OVERLOAD

Use only the power adapter provided with the Development Kit.

3.4 OBSERVE SAFETY AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

Read and adhere to the instructions in this section and the instructions supplied with the chassis and
associated modules. If you do not follow these instructions and the instructions provided by chassis and
module suppliers, you increase safety risk and the possibility of noncompliance with regional laws and
regulations.

3.5 INSTALLING AND REMOVING THE BOARD

CAUTION
Only qualified technical personnel should do this procedure. Disconnect the computer from its
power source before performing the procedures described here. Failure to disconnect the power
before you open the computer can result in personal injury or equipment damage.

Refer to your chassis manual for instructions on installing and removing the Board.

Figure 8: Connection Diagram for Front Panel Header

Hard Drive Activity LED Pins

Pins 1 and 3 can be connected to an LED to provide a visual indicator that data is being read from or
written to a hard drive. Proper LED function requires one of the following:
A SATA hard drive connected to an onboard SATA connector
Intel Z-U130 USB Solid State Drive (or compatible device) connected to one of the front
panel USB headers
Reset Switch Pins
Pins 5 and 7 can be connected to a momentary single pole, single throw (SPST) type switch that is
normally open. When the switch is closed, the board resets and runs the POST.
Power/Sleep LED Pins
Pins 2 and 4 can be connected to a one- or two-color LED Table 14 shows the possible states for a onecolor power LED.

Power Switch Pins

Pins 6 and 8 can be connected to a front panel momentary-contact power switch. The switch must pull
the SW_ON# pin to ground for at least 50 ms to signal the power supply to switch on or off. (The time
requirement is due to internal debounce circuitry on the board.) At least two seconds must pass before
the power supply will recognize another on/off signal.

3.10 POWER SUPPLY CONNECTORS

External Power Supply the board can be powered with a 5 V external powers supply
though a DC connector on the IO back panel. The rear 5 VDC jack accepts plugs with an
inner diameter (ID) of 2.5 mm and an outer diameter (OD) of 5.5 mm, where the inner contact
is 5 V and the shell is GND.
Internal Power Supply the board can alternatively be powered via a Li-Ion dual cell battery
through a battery connector are shown in Table 15.

Installing Board Components

3.11 REPLACING THE RTC BATTERY

A coin-cell battery powers the IFC964XBoards real-time clock and CMOS memory. When the board is
not plugged into a wall socket, the RTC battery has an estimated life of three years. When the board is
plugged in, the standby current from the power supply extends the life of the battery.
When the voltage drops below a certain level, settings stored in CMOS RAM (for example, the date and
time) might not be accurate. Replace the RTC battery with an equivalent one. Figure 6 shows the location
of the battery.
CAUTION
Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with an incorrect type Batteries should be recycled
where possible. Disposal of used batteries must be in accordance with local environmental
regulations.

To replace the battery, follow these steps:

1. Observe the precautions in Before You Begin
2. Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the board. Disconnect the boards power chord from
the AC power source (wall outlet or power adapter).Or disconnect the battery if connected to the
internal Li-Ion battery header.
3. Locate the RTC battery on the board (seeFigure 9).
4. Remove the batteryassembly from the Board battery connector (seeFigure 9).
5. Replace the batteryassemblyin the board with a new similar battery.

Board Usage

4. BOARD USAGE
4.1 BOARD POWER UP
The board can be powered up by connecting 5V/3A power supply to the DC jack. If Auto power on is not
enabled, the Power button (S inFigure 1) has to be pressed, for switching on the system.
The board can be reset using the Reset button (R inFigure 1).
