Physical Education Policy
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Your child is enrolled in a Physical Education Class at Dougherty Valley High School.
Attached you will find a copy of our department philosophy, policies, course
description, grading policies and contact information for your instructors. Please take
time to read this material carefully. It is our goal to make your childs Physical
Education experience as worthwhile and positive as possible. Please feel free to
contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Please note, this signed waiver for your student includes permission to access the
Windermere Trails behind DVHS and also use the sidewalk of Bollinger Canyon Road as
part of the Physical Education curriculum. Students are expected to be safe and follow
the instructions of their teacher and use crosswalks.
After reviewing this material, please sign so that your student can return the bottom
portion during the next class period.

The mission of the DVHS Physical Education program is to provide students
with developmentally appropriate activities using a variety of teaching
methods based on students individual needs. The emphasis in the Physical
Education program is to encourage students to appreciate their
achievements, to respect the ability of others, and to develop an
understanding of the components of fitness and how they relate to lifelong
fitness goals. With the advent of Common Core, this program will also
incorporate critical thinking where students will be asked to consider,
synthesize, critique, evaluate, and create within the sphere of Physical
Education tasks.
Weights
Standards to be mastered:

Students demonstrate knowledge of and competency in motor skills, movement


patterns, and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Students achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while
demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles, and strategies.
Students demonstrating knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts,
principles, and strategies that applies to the learning and performance of
physical activity.

Self-responsibility getting to class on time, dress appropriately and ready to


participate, following through on written assignments, and keeping a fitness

Grading Policy

All students will be evaluated on a standard grading policy. This policy is based
on the Dougherty Valley High School Grading Scale (see student handbook).

Scale is as follows:
Classwork = 50% (Participation, Attire, Social Interaction, etc)
Cardio Day = 25%
Performance Assessment Tasks = 25%
(Written Work/Projects/Final)

Classwork
Students will have the opportunity to earn 5 points daily (20pts per week) and will be
graded on the following criteria
Proper warm up executed
Participation with the maximum efort and to the best of ones abilities
Positive interaction with physical education staf and peers
Being to class on time and ready to participate
Acceptable behavior per the DVHS Student Handbook
Sportsmanship
Dressed in physical education uniform with the proper shoes
Cardio Day
Students will earn 10 points for participation in weekly cardio activities
Proper warm up before performance
Full Participation in cardio activity assigned for the day with maximum efort
Performance Assessment Tasks
25% of students grade will come from the written work collected throughout the
course of the quarter/semester
Lift Logs : Students will track their workouts and log their weekly progression
during diferent phases.
Tracking sets, reps, and weight lifted

Keeping record of progress for specific muscle groups

Written Journals
Quizzes
Article Reviews
Presentations

Lockers

Students will be issued a school lock and locker at the beginning of the school
year. The locks will be returned at the end of the school year or a $10
replacement fee will be collected for missing or damaged locks.
Students will not share their lockers or lock combinations with anyone. However,
some classes may be required to share lockers assigned by teacher due to
increased class growth. Combinations will not be given out to anyone other than
individual students. (If your clothes are in a friends locker we will not give out
their combination)
The Physical Education Department and/or DVHS are not responsible for lost or
stolen items. Please lock all items securely in assigned locker.

Locker Rooms

Students will be allowed 6 minutes after the tardy bell to change and vacate the
locker room, at which time the locker room will be locked.
Items left in locker room will not be able to be retrieved until passing periods.
Students will respect the property of the school and of other students, as well as
the property of Dougherty Valley High School.
Students electronic devices should be kept out of reach and out of sight at all
times. It is best not to have them at all.

Physical Education Uniform

Students are required to dress daily in a DVHS Physical Education t-shirt and
shorts or a PLAIN grey t-shirt and PLAIN navy blue shorts. Uniforms can be
purchased at registration or from individual instructors in the locker room before
or after class.
Proper footwear is required. Please wear supportive ATHLETIC shoes to class.

Sweats are permitted on cold days under your PE shorts, unless they are the
Physical Education sweats. Sweats worn over street clothes will be considered a
dress cut.
No cell phones, MP3 players or other electronic devices brought to class. All
school rules apply.
Jewelry and valuables should be locked in the locker room.
Hats may be worn for sun protection if worn properly (bill facing forward).
No sunglasses may be worn in class for safety reasons.
Not properly dressed in athletic attire during Weights class will result
in loss of participation due to the nature of the class and safety
protocol. Student will be asked to sit by the door and not interfere with
the class. Thank you for your understanding.
School Property and Equipment

Students are not allowed to use equipment unless an instructor is present and
has given permission. All equipment that is set up or out should be left alone
until the instructor has otherwise instructed.
Damage to school property by students may result in the removal from class
and restitution.

Medical Notes and Excuses

Students must dress in their PE Uniform daily if they have a note from a
parent/guardian modifying their activity for the day, they will still be required to
dress.
A Medical Note is required if a student will be out for more than 3 days even if
the injury is obvious a medical note is required. If a student will be out for more
than 6 weeks, they will be dropped from the class.

Make Up Work

Students will be given the opportunity to make-up classwork by appointment


only. Students are required to EMAIL their teacher to schedule and confirm
make-up date and time. If a student has an excused or unexcused absence, they
may earn classwork points by scheduling a make-up session with their teacher.
Any classwork made up for a CUT will be awarded once the CUT is clear by the
attendance office.

70% Proficiency Workshop In order to ensure that our students have a 70%
proficiency in Physical Education, we will ofer quarterly workshops. Workshop dates
and times will be posted on School Loop and in the locker rooms. Students are
encouraged to approach me to schedule a workshop that fits their schedule.
