Appendix A. Guidelines for doing PT and preparing final report

PT starts with compulsory attendance of an overview conference in the Office of
Philosophy, Social and Humanitarian Education Department. A student-teacher gets
the tasks and instructions, and information about subject for a demonstration lesson,
gets acquainted with PT Supervisor. He/she is informed that the result of observing
classes of PT Supervisor is observation notes (analysis of teachers and students
classroom activities) which help in planning and giving lessons.
Observation notes include the following points:

assessment of learners (level, personal peculiarities, strength of the class, abilities and

specific problems of the students, mutual relations, classroom climate);

assessment of resources (timing, student books, teacher books, workbooks, teaching
aids, computers, IT, etc.);
assessment of teacher (experience, instructional strategies, management, program,
student organization, evaluation, etc.)
other factors (day of the week, period of classes, etc.).
Assessment of learners is important to understand what kind of learners a
student-teacher is going to deal with. Scheme of studies (type of lesson, educating
methods and instructional strategies) depends on this analysis. There are different
types of learning styles (visual, auditory, read-write, kinesthetic) and different groups
of learners. For example, if you teach Group I (learners would rather listen to things
being explained, then write information down without thinking independently, a
teacher has to use a lot of different teaching aids), you should provide written
materials and exercises, explain a lot, use many visuals or graphics and pictures. If
you teach Group II (learners would rather ask a lot of questions, prefer heuristic
search methods, they think independently), you should give a lecture or seminar
using an inquiry- or problem-solving approach or unusual type of lesson (for
instance, discussion sections, problem set, laboratory section, conversations,
conference, etc.)
While assessing a teacher a student-teacher should pay attention to the following
points:

goals and objectives of a lesson;

timeliness and originality of lesson topic;
methods of presenting material, their effectiveness;
way of interaction between a teacher and students.
When a student-teacher plan and give his/her own demonstration lessons, he/she
should take into consideration such issues as experience of choosing subject teacher,
level of students, his/her own abilities and skills.
After special preparation a student-teacher is to give demonstration lessons in
the group he/she chose. Number of given lectures and seminars is determined by PT
Coordinator. All the classes should be attended by a PT Supervisor who controls the

lessons, keeps an eye on the discipline and, if its necessary, helps to solve difficult
and embarrassing situations.
When a student-teacher plan a lesson, he/she should choose lesson title, define
its timeliness and originality, goals and objectives, write a summary, put the main
questions and points, full text, train reading it paying attention to taken time. At the
lesson you shouldnt just read without having an eye contact with students. Some
passages should be pronounced without looking at notes, but with emphasizing some
ideas. You should try to communicate with students, ask questions, and ask to express
their own point of view. You should avoid explanations without reflection. Only
definitions, names, dates and titles could be written to dictation.
During a lesson students shouldnt just retell the material, but also interpret it
and express their own point of view on the problem under discussion. Moreover its
important to ask additional questions.
At the end of the lesson conclusions and summary should be made, attention
should be paid to main idea of the topic. A student-teacher should analyze students
answers and their activity at the lesson, and put marks. PT Supervisor could help a
student-teacher at the end.
A student-teacher should hand in a Lesson plan to PT Supervisor before or after
a lesson. The plan should include lesson title, type of lesson (lecture or seminar),
goals and objectives, introduction, main part and ending, references.
Introduction includes the title, problems under discussion, type of lesson.
In the main part a student-teacher presents the outline of the lesson paying
attention to topics and time to discuss each of them.
At the end a student-teacher makes conclusion including summary of students
answers, their activity at the lesson, and putting marks. If the plan is of lecture, at the
end the topics for discussion at the seminar should be given.
At the end of PT a student-teacher should present final report to PT Coordinator.
Deadline of reporting is determined by the programme curriculum. PT Results
Reporting includes observation notes, Summaries of given lessons, Literature review

with evaluative (critical) abstracts, teaching aides and assessment resources,

individual work plan Summative Assessment of PT made by PT Supervisor.
Title page of PT report includes title of Masters programme, level, year, full
name of a student-teacher. Individual work plan should cover type of activity, period,
number and type of classes, classes topic and its timeliness, goals and objectives,
outcomes, main problems with planning and giving classes, level of students activity
and interest, references.
Final PT Grade depends on the report and Summative Assessment of PT made
by PT Supervisor.
