Fiji Link Appoints Chief Pilot

Fiji Airways has appointed Captain
Manu Rajappa as Chief Pilot and
Manager Flight Operations for its
domestic subsidiary, Fiji Link.
Captain Rajappa joined Fiji Link in
February 2007, and until his new
appointment was Fiji Links ATR Fleet
Captain and Training Manager.
With 7612 flight hours under his belt,
Captain Rajappa took command of the
ATR42-500 in 2008.
He became a Check and Training
Captain role in 2009 and played a key
role in the ATR42/72-600 introduction
and fleet transition.
He replaces Captain Gerald Erbsleben,
who tendered his resignation.
Fiji Link general manager, Thomas
Robinson, said: We thank Captain
Erbsleben for his years of service to Fiji
Link, and are proud to confirm Captain
Rajappa as his replacement.
He has the admiration of the
management and team at both Fiji Link
and Fiji Airways.
As Chief Pilot, Captain Rajappa will
manage Fiji Links 71 pilots and ensure
the safety of flight operations.
Mr Robinson said: This role is
obviously crucial in maintaining all
of our professional standards, which
includes on-going training, mentorship,
operational excellence and reliability of
Fiji Link.
More changes
As a result of Captain Rajappas promotion,
two further management changes have
been announced by Fiji Link.
Captain Nitesh Prasad replaces Captain
Rajappa as Training Manager and will act

as ATR Fleet Captain until a permanent

appointment is made.
Captain Nitesh joined Fiji Link in
August 2009 and worked his way up to a
Training Captain on the ATR fleet.
First officer Neli Vuatalevu has been
appointed Line Operations Manager.
He has been with the Airline since February
2007, and has spent a lot of time as a Check
and Training Captain on the Twin Otters
before moving on to the ATRs.
Mr Vuatalevu is in the process of getting
his Command on the ATR42/72600
aircraft.

Fiji Airways Board Director, Stefan

Pichler, said: By placing another homegrown professional in the position of
Chief Pilot for Fiji Link, were very
clearly signalling our focus on what Fiji
Link offers Fijian aviators.
This is a fulfilling pilot progression
pathway within the Fiji Airways Group.
We aim to increase our complement
ratio of locals to expatriate pilots, and
the new pilot management changes
announced speak volumes about the
skills and experience Fijian pilots
have.

Suicide In Labasa

A 70-year-old woman allegedly

committed suicide at Vunivau Cemetery
Road at Basoga in Labasa.
Divisional Police Commander (DPC)
northern SSP Shri Bhawan Singh said
they had received an official report on
the case.
Sukraji was described as a healthy
woman who loved gardening at her
home.
The victims son Narayan Prasad said:
Last night (Saturday) we were together
after I drank kava at around 11pm she
told me to have dinner and then we all
went to sleep.

604.909.4088

We always have breakfast together so

the next morning we couldnt find her
in the living room; thats when I asked
my father who said she wasnt in the
bedroom.
She works a lot in the garden so I came
out looking for her around the compound.
I came up to the driveway to look for her
and thats when I saw the rope hanging
from the side of the house.
I walked back to the side of the house to
check why the rope was hanging from there
and I found her hanging from the rope.
He noted that there were always a few
drums on that spot.

info@fijitimescanada.com

I dont know why she would want to

hang herself.
She was a healthy lady who loved
gardening and spent time with her family.
SSP Singh said: The Police have
received an official report but
investigations are still ongoing.
The deceaseds body is at the Labasa
mortuary. We are still making
arrangements for the post- mortem to be
conducted.
He said at this point in time they were
treating it as a suicide case but they
havent ruled out foul play until the postmortem is completed.

Telecom Fiji Helps Disabled Prasad

Telecom Fiji Limited recently provided
assistance to a disabled man who has
been fending for himself for the past 19
years.
Jiten Prasad has been living alone in a
one-bedroom house at Urata Settlement,
in Bulileka, Labasa with no electricity,
a borehole as a source of water, and
sometimes begs or seeks assistance from
neighbours and friends.
The company decided to step in
and help Mr Prasad as part of TFLs
internal strategy and corporate social
responsibility.
The TFL team in Labasa cleared the
overgrown tract towards Mr Prasads
house before cleaning his compound, its
surrounding areas and inside his house.
Basic necessities were donated by the
TFL staff members.
TFL North accounts manager
Setareki Daulako said: TFL plans
to continue to offer its assistance
further with the collaboration of
donor agencies to the less fortunate

604.510.4088

in the community.
This is also about giving a fresh new
lease of life, a smiling face and happy
tears to the neglected in our society.
Mr Prasad said: I am very happy that
this team from TFL was very kind to
cleanup my compound and donate basic
necessities to me.
I hope Government can help me with
basic necessities like proper water
facility, toilet and bathroom facilities.
Also a better walkway or driveway
because here I have to go through the
neighbours compound to get to the main
road and its very rugged.
Mr Prasads knee joints are weak and at
times he would crawl around to attend to
things or chores. He is a former student of
the Labasa School for the Handicapped

and is also a social welfare recipient.

My father died after I was born and
mother brought me here when I was
young but then she died 10 years ago,
he said.
I have an older brother who lives in
Suva, who supports me at times and an
older sister who is married and lives in
Labasa as well. I cook my own meals
using my small gas stove. A taxi driver,
who is my friend, normally helps me
out with the supply of my groceries and
transporting me to town.
I use a pit toilet. I use a borehole to
source water from for cleaning and
drinking.
He only begs when he runs out of food
supply or when there is no one available
to support him.

Canadian Resource Firm Extends North

Gold Project
Canadian resource firm, TVI Pacific Inc,
will be extending its due diligence work
programme at the Cirianiu gold project
located in the Macuata Province on
Vanua Levu.
The data verification work carried out to
date has revealed encouraging results,
the company said.
Therefore
the
management
has
determined an additional exploration
programme would be essential in
allowing an investment decision to be
made on the project.
The decision is now expected for the
fourth quarter of this year.
The additional exploration programme
includes auger soil geochemical
surveying and possible confirmation
drilling.
TVI chairman/chief executive, Clifford
James, said: TVIs exploration team in
Fiji has done an exceptional job of better
understanding the resource potential at
the Cirianiu project.
While the project looks very promising
from both a geological and permitting
perspective, we want to go into the
decision making process with as much
confidence as possible.
This requires us to conduct further
exploration work of our own to confirm

Man Sentenced
To 13Yrs For
Rape Of 9Yr Old
Girl
A 30-year-old man has been sentenced
to 13 years imprisonment for raping a
9-year-old girl on several occasions in
2010 and 2011.
The court was told that the father of
two raped the adopted daughter of his
defacto partner.
While sentencing the man, Lautoka High
Court Judge Justice Priyantha Fernando
told him that he was expected to look
after the girl.
The Judge said the man raped the girl
over a long period of time and this will
surely scare her for the rest of her life.
The man also showed no remorse for his
actions.
The Judge has placed a non-parole
period of 12 years.

previous data and to potentially identify

additional areas of mineralisation.
TVI Pacific Inc is focused on the
production, development, exploration
and acquisition of resource projects in
the Asia Pacific region.
Local partnership
As earlier announced, TVI entered into
a Heads of Terms Agreement with Kalo
Exploration Limited, a private resource
Fijian incorporated firm, the past year.
The agreement was for the exclusive right
to enter into a joint venture partnership
to conduct mineral exploration,
development and production on the
Cirianiu gold project.
Under the terms of the Agreement, TVI
was granted the right to conduct a due
diligence review of the property over a
period of 180 days.
TVI has now received approval from
Kalo to extend the period of this due
diligence work by another 180 days to
allow for additional work to be done.
Since November 2014, TVI has carried
out re-logging, re-sampling for assay,
sampling for petrography, density
measurements, re-assay and collar
resurveys.
The programme also included data
validation of all completed drill holes at
the projects Qiriyaga Hill deposit from
previous exploration work carried out by
Placer Pacific Ltd. from 1986 to 1993
and Kalo from 2009 to 2013.
All new generated data from the
programme enabled TVIs team to create
updated interpretations of geological
sections and level plans to better

understand the mineralisation controls

and emplacement of gold at the Qiriyaga
Hill deposit.
What results say
Results have indicated the Qiriyaga Hill
deposit contains a low-sulphidation style
epithermal gold deposit.
Here, gold is distributed in volcaniclastic
host rocks mainly as free gold in quartz
stockwork and hydrothermal breccia.
The general gold grade appears to be in
the range of 0.3 g/t to 5.0 g/t Au with
localised higher-grade zones.
The mineralisation is mainly gold with
varying minor amounts of silver, lead,
zinc and copper.
Based on this data, the company has a
firmer understanding of the deposits
resource potential and is able to better
plan further exploration work in the
project area.
Work to date has found a high correlation
between soil geochemistry, trench data
and soil results with the presence of gold
mineralisation at depth.
TVI plans
Following the auger soil geochemistry
program, and subject to Board approval,
TVI plans to conduct a limited
confirmation drilling programme.
This is mainly to test high grade areas
of the deposit to ensure continuity of
mineralisation, which would further derisk the project.
Based on the results of these
programmes, TVI will be able to make a
decision on whether it will proceed with
the formation of a joint venture on the
project in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Investment Fiji Suggests Alternatives

Investment Fiji believes additional
value add services could be promoted
and encouraged to entice tourists to
increase their spending in Fiji rather than
imposing an additional tax.
This was Investment Fijis reaction in
response to the petition by SODELPA
Parliamentarian Viliame Gavoka to
introduce a Service Fee for tourists.
The Service Fee is proposed to be
charged to all guests/client bills for the
purposes of supplementing the incomes
of tourism industry workers in Fiji.
Investment Fiji chief executive, Godo
Muller-Tuet, told the Parliamentary
Standing Committee on Economic
Affairs the Investment Fiji did not
support this notion.
Mr Muller-Tuet said the introduction
of this will adversely impact the
affordability of Fiji as a tourist
destination.
And therefore decrease visitor numbers,
which could lead to reduced investments
in tourism and decreased future
employment in the sector, he said.
Investment Fiji believes all workers need
to be treated fairly and their welfare is of
paramount important.
The introduction of Service Fees in
the tourism industry might lead to wage

inequality when compared to other

sectors, Mr Muller-Tuet said.
It is the role of Investment Fiji to
attract foreign investment and stimulate
exports.
The introduction of Service Fees could
have an adverse effect on investment,
as visitor numbers might be contracting
rather than expanding.
Potential investors might therefore
decide not to invest in Fiji, which will have
a negative impact on new employment.
He said on the other hand, growth
in tourism will lead to increased
investments,
new
employment
opportunities and increased wealth for
our nation.
Quality of service
Meanwhile, Investment Fiji also
believes this would adversely impact
the affordability of Fiji as a tourist
destination.
Increased costs will make a holiday in
Fiji more expansive and therefore open
the door to alternative destinations, Mr
Muller-Tuet said.
Fiji has a 20 per cent tax (five per cent
Service Turnover Tax and 15 per cent
VAT), in addition to the $200 Airport
Departure Tax.
This already makes Fiji an expensive

advertise on

destination especially for Australian

visitors who have alternative options.
Rewarding employees for good service
via tips is common across the world.
The introduction of a fixed Service Fee
would potentially curtail this practice.
Employees would therefore be less
likely to receive tips and become demotivated. In addition, the potential loss
of tips may not be compensated by the
additional income derived via Service
Fees.
The Service Fee is proposed to be
levied on clients/guests of:
- Hotels
- Rental car operators
- Inbound tour operators
- Recreation
- Entertainment
- Cinema
- Eateries
- Bars and nightclubs located within an
area recognised as an integrated tourism
enclave
- Event management operators
- All water sports
- Underwater activities
- Skydiving
- Hot air balloon rises
- River safaris
- Charter flight services

Australian Builds Storm-Proof Homes For

Fiji's Poorest Residents

Just outside Fiji's second biggest city,

Lautoka, lies a place known as Koroipita
or Peter's village, home to some of the
country's poorest people.
Despite their disadvantages, village
residents live in homes designed to
withstand powerful storms, at a cost of
only $1 a day.
The village was named after Australian
Peter Drysdale, who built more than 160
houses.
Mr Drysdale arrived in Fiji as a young
man to work in forestry before building
hundreds of houses for people left
destitute by cyclones.
"In Fiji officially there's about 110,000
people squatting," Mr Drysdale said.
His solution to the problem of growing
squatter settlements was Koroipita
and played a role in every aspect of its
development, including its ability to
withstand cyclonic conditions.
Each home had two sections separated
by a breezeway, with one containing
two bedrooms, and the other a kitchen,
shower and toilet.
"The two buildings buttress each other
so there's tremendous strength and great
integrity," Mr Drysdale said.
"I would hesitate, and I'm not an engineer
but I've been through 22 hurricanes
in my time in Fiji and my guess is this
could withstand 350kph winds."
Mr Drysdale also designed the smokeless
stoves and the plumbing system to
reduce the amount of waste water sent to
the sewerage treatment plant.
"From the washtub and from the sink
and the shower water, that all channels
via a grease trap and the idea is to trap
the grease and don't allow that to get into
the sewerage treatment plant because it
will gum it up," he said.
Each house costs $12,000 and can be
built in five days.
Koroipita a model for the Pacific
Fijian couple Moape and Timaleti
recently moved into one of the small,
two-bedroom houses with their four
young daughters, one of whom has
autism.
"We have a house, we live under a roof
that we can have our own family there.
Family time," Moape said.
All children at Koroipita go to school,
aided by a computer lab and library to
help them with their school work.
"Last year, we had around 29 children
top their class, six came first and the
rest in all fields academic, sports so we

604.909.4088

recognise them each year," community

development manager Susane Naidu
said.
"We have our own excellence awards."
Currently 780 people live in the 164
houses at Koroipita.
While the New Zealand government
helped to build the homes, demand is
huge.
With more than a thousand families on
the waiting list, things become tense
when people are told there is no room.
"I am threatened once a week, my staff
are threatened," Mr Drysdale said.
"This is dangerous work. This is right at
the coalface of poverty."
Mr Drysdale said Koroipita was a model

that could be replicated elsewhere

around the Pacific.
He said the need to build low cost
housing was becoming more pressing as
more people moved from rural to urban
areas or areas threatened by climate
change.
"I had a woman turn up here with a Fiji
passport, thrust it in my face and say I am
a climate refugee from Kiribati," he said.
"She's got a Fiji passport and asked
'where is my house?'"
The woman told Mr Drysdale more
people from Kiribati were coming.
This year Mr Drysdale's tireless, selfless
work was recognised in Australia with
an Order of Australia medal.

Australian Peter Drysdale spearheaded the construction of 164 homes at

Families Praise Government For

Assistance

Four families now have the chance

to rebuild their burned homes after
receiving help from Government.
Minister for Local Government, Housing
and Environment Parveen Kumar
handed over a $5000 grant to each of its
recipients at Fiji FA House in Suva.
Mr Kumar said the programme was
launched last year by the Prime Minister.
Today we have given four families
$5000 each who lost their homes in fire,
he said. We have assisted 10 families so
far. We have come across applications
and we are supporting the people.
This allocation was launched in the
2014 budget announcement which was
for 2015.
This will be an ongoing programme for
the Government this year.
Those receiving the grants praised the
Bainimarama-Government for helping
them. Recipients included 61-year-old
Ateca Aditukana, 42-year-old Rajeshwar
Rai, and 47-year-old Sudesh Prasad who all
spoke about the difficulties they faced after
losing their homes and belongings to fire.
I have no idea how my house got on
fire. I was really frustrated because no
one helped me not even my children.
I stay alone and I have faced a lot of
difficulties, said Ms Aditukana.
After that incident I started staying with
a pastor in Kalabu Housing in Valelevu.
He helped me a lot. I used to make jam
and sell them before but I am getting old

now and I need someone to support me.

I had no idea on how I can rebuild my
home.
I received some information that the
Government support victims who have lost
their home in fire. I applied and I am grateful
that someone did respond to my application.
I would like to thank the Bainimarama
Government it will help people like me.
Mr Rai said he was happy to receive the
call saying that he would be receiving the
grant to help build his house. He travelled
to Suva from Sigatoka in order to receive
the $5000-help from Government.
I am grateful that we have received grant
from the ministry. I will start rebuilding

our house from next week. My kids have

struggled a lot and now they will finally
have a house to live in, he said.
Sudesh Prasad also expressed relief
at receiving the grant. We will start
rebuilding our home. It was very hard to
cope that time but it has become easier by
the assistant provided by the Government,
To qualify for such aid, the Minister said
applicants should have a proper lease
over the land and their income should be
less than $15,000.
They (the applicants) should have proper
certification from National Fire Authority
and also they need to have proper certification
from Fiji Police Force, he said.

THREE hospitals in the country were

given computers, printers and scanners
from WOWS Kids Fiji on Monday.
The charitable organisation gave the assorted
equipment to the pediatric oncology units of
the CWM Hospital, Lautoka Hospital and
the Nadi Hospital for the benefit of hospital
staff looking after children suffering from
cancer and other illnesses.
WOWS Kids Fiji's team leader Fanny
Fiteli said the gifts were a result of the
many visits they made to the hospitals
where they saw oncology staff running
around for the children's medical
documentation to send overseas.
"After long talks with the medical staff,
we realised that this was indeed a need
for these units and the WOWS board
decided to meet that need," she said.
"The total cost of the computers is about
$10,000, $6000 of which was from the

Laughing Samoans awareness concert

last year.
"The rest was from other fundraising
events also conducted last year."
WOWS founder and board member Sina
Kami said it was a special moment because
it was one of her daughter's dreams.
"Tae Kami (daughter) always wanted two
things. A resource centre where children
can spend time in, away from the hospital
and a fund that would help children during
these trying times, making sure that their
parents are not worried," she said.
"Now it has come to fruition. We are also
happy to announce that in September, we
are having the Laughing Samoans back
and we will have one show in Suva and
another in Nadi.
"We love having them back because they
are a great treat for our WOWS Kids. We
just want to bring smiles to their faces."

The WOWS Kids Laughing Samoan

concerts are scheduled for September 11
and 12.
Lautoka Hospital pediatric consultant
Dr Rigamoto Taito said the gifts were
timely and appreciated as there had been
changes in child cancer trends.
"A few decades ago, we lost many of
our child cancer patients, however,
since we started our association and
partnership with the Christchurch
Children's Hospital, we have seen
vast improvements in the treatment of
leukemia," Dr Taito said.
"These computers will certainly assist us
in the fight against child cancer and we
are very thankful," she said.
Doctors Reapi Mataika and Sailasa
Misimisi received the computers for
CWM Hospital and the Nadi pediatric
oncology unit respectively.

A-G Sayed-Khaiyum Says To Leave

Institutions Alone

Institutions like Parliament, Elections

Office and the Judiciary need to be
dealt with in a very apolitical manner,
says Attorney-General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum.
His remarks were made during an
elections office regional workshop held
at the Grand Pacific Hotel.
The workshop is supported and
facilitated by the Australian Government
and the Pacific Islands, Australia and
New Zealand Electoral Administrators
Network (PIANZEA).
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted the
unfortunate manner in which Fijis
Elections Office was treated by
PIANZEA after the events of 2006, while
calling on other Pacific island countries
to support each other.
I think it is also very critical for
PIANZEA to be a lot more attuned to
what is happening in the Pacific, Mr
Sayed-Khaiyum said.
As you know Fiji was part of PIANZEA
before 2006 and suddenly that connection
was lost after the events of 2006.
It is very critical that when you are

talking about Parliaments, when you are

talking about the Elections Office and
when you are talking about the Judiciary,
that they need to be dealt with in a very
apolitical manner.
All of these institutions go towards
building a strong democracy and are also
independent institutions, he said.
From a Pacific perspective, we must not
ever allow any of our brothers or sisters
to be sidelined because in order to ensure
longevity of democracy and longevity of
strong democratic institutions, we must
always hold hands with each other.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said at international
conferences, issues concerning Pacific
island countries show how much these
small island states have in common.
You suddenly realise that the Pacific
island states and other small island
states have far more in common, are
far more isolated in many discourse;
whether were talking about economic
development; whether we talking about
financing; whether we are talking
about aid; whether we are talking about
access to markets, we the small island

Attorney-General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum.

developing states have far more in
common than the rest of the world, he
said.
The regional workshop was opened
by the Australian High Commissioner
Margaret Twomey and it was attended
by regional elections officers who were
here to learn best practices and attend
courses.

Health Ministry Confirms First

Chikungunya Case

Fijis Health Ministry has received

laboratory confirmation of an imported
case of Chikungunya virus disease and
will scale-up its national mosquito vector
control program and its disease surveillance
activities to prevent establishment and
internal circulation of CHIKV.
Chikungunya virus disease evolved and
has progressively circulated amongst
neighboring Pacific Island countries in
since 2014.
The Ministry in a statement says it
has been monitoring the Chikungunya
situation in the region very closely in
collaboration with WHO (World Health
Organisation) and SPC (Secretariat of
the Pacific Community).
In addition, it is also spearheading
Chikungunya
mitigation
activities
countrywide in efforts to reduce the risks
of establishing the disease in Fiji.
Chikungunya virus disease is caused by

the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV).

The Dengue and Chikungunya viruses
are spread by the same mosquito vector.
CHIKV is transmitted when a mosquito
bites an infected individual and then
discharges the virus in the bloodstream of
a well individual during its next blood feed.
The symptoms of Chinkungunya virus
disease, begins 3 7 days after being
bitten by infected mosquitoes and,
includes high fever, joint pains with
swelling and stiffness, headache, muscles
pains, fatigue and rash on the trunk and
limbs. Most will recover within a week,
although joint pains may persist for
months or years in some cases.
Although the disease is rarely fatal,
the socioeconomic burden that comes
with massive numbers missing work
and school as a result of the disease is
immense, as experienced in other Pacific
Island countries that are currently

dealing with the epidemic.

Prevention of CHIKV infection basically
involves reducing the mosquito density
to levels that will prevent disease
transmission, and also protecting oneself
from mosquito bites.
The Ministry encourages all individuals,
government sectors and corporate
entities in Fiji to work cohesively with
the Ministry of Health in destroying
mosquito breeding grounds via frequent
organized cleanup campaigns.
To prevent mosquito bites, the use of
mosquito repellents, mosquito nets and
mosquito screens in windows and doors
is recommended.
With the confirmation of an imported
case, the Ministry advises members of the
public to be more vigilant of the disease
and its manifestations and to present to
the nearest health facility should they
experience signs and symptoms.

Fijians Safe After Mortar Rounds Fired In

Camp Ziouani
Fijian soldiers serving in a United
Nations mission in the Golan Heights
are safe after reports of a skirmish that
spilled into Camp Ziouani.
Motar rounds were fired from Syria
in the last few days following clashes
between the Syrian armed forces and
anti-government forces.
RFMF Landforce Commander Colonel
Sitiveni Qiliho has confirmed the troops

are being looked after well.

None of our peacekeepers were injured
and were confident in the actions
taken by the UNDOF headquarters for
their safety in taking shelter and other
measures they have taken.
In the latest round of fighting close to
the camp, two soldiers from Nepal were
injured in an exchange between Syrian
soldiers and anti government forces.

About 300 Fijian soldiers are serving

in the UN Disengagement Observation
Force in the Golan Heights.

8000 Speeding Tickets Issued

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has
issued more than 8000 Traffic Infringement
Notice (TIN) for speeding and reckless
driving in the first quarter of 2015 alone.
Of the 14,934 bookings made in the
first quarter, 8251 were for speeding
violations.
Those captured through the LTA speed
cameras amounted to 2766, while 5485
were booked through daily operations
and enforcement work.
The bulk of the booking was from the
Western Division, followed by the
Central and North.
Speeding fines contributed the highest
percentage in terms of the total number
of TIN issued with almost 60 per cent.
There were 6687 TIN issued for other
violations such as failure to comply or
use safety devices, incorrect parking
or stopping, carriers carrying excess
passengers, failure to produce driving
licence, failure to obey road markings,
careless driving and violating mobile
communication regulation.

Last year a total of 84,000 TIN were issued in

which 55,000 comprised speeding violations.
The LTA will continue to increase its
visibility and mobility on the road to
deter speeding and reckless driving.
The five recent fatal accidents have been
attributed to speeding, drinking and
driving and fatigue.
LTA warns motorists that even though they
will not be present at all locations to supervise
and monitor traffic movement, there will
be people on the ground that will be LTAs
eyes and ears, sending credible information
to enable the authority to investigate and
execute necessary disciplinary action.
Speeding has been the number one killer
on our roads in the last 10 years. Since
2010, 128 people have been killed on
our roads due to speeding.
Meanwhile, taxi drivers have been urged
to constantly advocate road safety as they
go about their work, in a bid to create
awareness and reduce road accidents.
Land Transport Authority regional
manager West Alfred Williame said

during the Nadi Taxi Association annual

general meeting that this was vital.
Our concern here is the western region
having an alarming number of accidents.
Talk to your family and passengers about
road safety, even your communities.
We are giving a lot of emphasis on road
safety because we want to touch peoples lives
instead of someone losing their life, he said.
Police Division traffic officer West
Assistant
Superintendent
Mitieli
Divuana said Nadi taxi drivers needed
to establish a solid communication and
feedback system with the police.
We are only criticised during the
meetings, but no one comes to the office.
The only thing that comes out during
meetings is criticism.
Nadi Town Council special administrator
Robin Ali echoed similar comments.
I urge members to make suggestions
on how better we can address issues
that are being faced and we will include
you as one of the town councils main
stakeholders, he said.

Fiji's PM Frank Bainimarama Will Not

Participate In PIF Meetings Until Australia
And New Zealand Are Expelled

Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama

has backed down on his refusal for the
country to participate in the Pacific
Islands Forum (PIF), but says he will
not personally attend meetings until the
"undue influence" of Australia and New
Zealand is addressed.
The
intergovernmental
forum
suspended Fiji in 2009 for failing to
return the country to democracy after a
Bainimarama-led 2006 coup.
After last year's democratic election,
which brought Mr Bainimarama's Fiji
First party to power, PIF lifted the ban.
But Mr Bainimarama said Fiji would not
renew its membership unless Australia
and New Zealand were expelled as
members, as he believed the forum no
longer served the interests of all Pacific
Islanders.
The Prime Minister announced the change
to his policy at a meeting to formalize
his alternative group, the Pacific Islands
Development Forum (PIDF).
"We will continue to participate in all
forum activities at the public service,
technical and ministerial levels," he said.
"As head of government, I will not
participate in any forum leader's meeting
until the issue of the undue influence
of Australia and New Zealand and our
divergence of views is addressed."
He said Australia and New Zealand, PIF's
major funders, are not island nations, but
"more development partners".
Australia in particular, he said, was at
odds with what he called "the biggest
threat to our security" - rising sea levels
caused by climate change.
"Rather than side with us, Australia in
particular is siding with what I call the
coalition of the selfish," he said.

Frank Bainimarama
"Those industrialized nations which
are putting the welfare of their carbon
polluting industries and their workers
before our welfare and survival as
Pacific Islanders."
Mr Bainimarama said his refusal
to participate was not based on any
lingering indignation over Fiji being
suspended from the forum in the wake
of the 2006 coup.
"This is not some ill-considered position
based on resentment against Australia
and New Zealand for their punitive
attitude towards our reform program that
produced the first genuine democracy in
Fijian history," he said.
In April New Zealand Prime Minister
John Key told a New Zealand radio
station that criticisms of the forum were

just Mr Bainimarama "mouthing off".

"This is not me 'mouthing off', as
the New Zealand Prime Minister
so condescendingly put it," Mr
Bainimarama said.
Australia and New Zealand have the
biggest populations and economies of
the 16 PIF member states.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
spokeswoman told the ABC that Australia
welcomed Fiji's participation "in regional
organisations, including the PIF."
"It has an important role to play in the
region," she said.
"We will continue to work with all
regional countries with a view to
strengthening regional cooperation
in the pursuit of a stable, secure and
prosperous region."

Men Sentenced To 17 Years In Prasad

Murder Trial

Two young men who murdered Fiji born

New Zealand resident Shalvin Prasad
in South Auckland two years ago were
sentenced to life imprisonment with
non-parole periods of 17 years.
Shivneel Kumar, 20, and Bryne Permal,
22, were sentenced in the High Court
at Auckland over the death of Shalvin
Prasad, whose smouldering body was
found on a rural South Auckland road on
the morning of January 31, 2013.
Justice Geoffrey Venning stressed
to friends and family of Mr Prasad who numbered about 50 in the public
gallery - that the sentence was one of
life imprisonment, regardless of the
minimum non-parole periods.
He said Kumar, who has a partner and
child in South Africa, was "entirely
without remorse" and had attempted to
convince probation in a pre-sentencing
interview that his co-defendant was the
one who killed Mr Prasad.
Permal also denied responsibility for the
man's death but the judge said he was
clearly involved and was the one who
bought the petrol.
Detective Inspector Dave Lynch fronted
media outside court because the Prasad
family was "too upset".
He said the two-and-a-half-year process
had been extremely traumatic for them.
There were still question marks around
how the victim was actually knocked out
before his death and Mr Lynch said it
was unfortunate the only two who knew
could not be trusted to tell the truth.
"[Kumar and Permal] have simply
told too many lies and will never be
believed," he said.
"For family, police and everyone it's
frustrating."
The victim's mother Shammi told
the court the killing of her "kind and
sympathetic boy" happened just four
days shy of his 22nd birthday.
"How much pain must my baby have
gone through? He must have cried for
help and we were not there to help our
baby in the final moments of his life,"
she said.
Mr Prasad's brother Pravin said he spent
that day, which would have been his
brother's birthday, on the rural roadside
where his charred remains were found.
"Those images will forever be embossed
on our lives," he said.
On January 30, the victim withdrew
$30,050, in $100 and $50 bills, from a
Manukau bank at the request of Kumar,

604.510.4088

Shivneel Kumar (left) and Bryne Permal, in Auckland High Court

who waited outside.
Crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins said
the money element was a "significantly
aggravating factor".
"Killing for financial gain is not a
particularly common feature of cases in
this country," he said.
Despite them both being charged with
murder, Kumar was fingered as "the
instigator and driving force" behind the
crime.
He said on the night of January 30, Mr
Prasad met the two defendants and the
group drove through South Auckland.
The Crown said the victim was assaulted
at an unknown location and bundled into
the boot of Permal's mother's car, driven
by Kumar.
The defendants then bought 15 litres of
petrol, using the stolen money, before
driving to McRobbie Rd in Kingseat,
where they doused the victim in petrol
and set him alight.
Justice Geoffrey Venning said Mr Prasad
had been rendered deeply unconscious
by the killers.
He said it was most likely the result of
"long and deliberate compression to
the neck area" and he accepted the pair
probably thought he was dead at the time
of the burning.
Medical witnesses gave evidence that
Mr Prasad was conscious when the fire
was ignited.
"The only matter of small comfort to
his family may be that he was deeply
unconscious at the time he was set
alight," Justice Venning said.
In the days after the murder, Kumar

info@fijitimescanada.com

spent thousands of dollars on his car and

paying off various debts and on February
2 he and Permal went shopping together.
Store records showed they got tattoos,
watches and T-shirts totaling nearly $2000.
Large sums were also deposited into
bank accounts linked to Kumar.
"Money wasted on rubbish by those
heartless criminals," Pravin Prasad said.
"Whatever sentence is handed down will
not be enough."

New Paradise Beverages Brew House

Doubles The Capacity

The launch of Paradise Beverages

Limiteds new $18 million brew house
in Walu Bay, Suva will double its
production capacity.
The old brewery produces around two
million cases of beer each year for
local consumption, with capability for
500,000 cases for export.
The new facilities will effectively set up a
doubling of capacity. Production of an extra
two million cases for export is possible with
the cost-efficient addition of extra tanks.
General Manager, Tony Scanlan, said:
What we used to produce in five days
will now take us four days, thanks to
greatest utilisation of raw materials.
With the new brew house, production

will no longer be the limiting factor on

our capacity.
So the investment also puts us in a
position to double our production by
cost-effective investment in additional
tanks, as the need arises.
In terms of new products, Mr Scanlan
indicated there are a number in the
innovation pipeline as they are constantly
developing and evaluating new products.
The new brew house is fully-automated
with the latest state of the art technology.
Old brewery
So what happens to the old brewery
which was built as part of the original
brewery 58 years ago?
Mr Scanlan said some parts will be

scrapped and some will be kept as

museum pieces.
For example the copper kettles, which
will be put on display in the new front
foyer (in Walu Bay), he said.
The opening of the new brew house was
part of major shareholder, Coca-Cola
Amatils, aggressive push for its Fijian
beer and rum brands.
Mr Scanlan said the new facility means
greater reliability and extra shelf life.
This gives us the capacity to grow and
eventually double our business, he said.
The consistency of product means we
can confidently extend our product shelf
life to 12 months, compared to nine at
the moment.

Terminally Ill Fijian Woman Allowed To Stay

In New Zealand

A terminally ill Fijian overstayer living

in Timaru has been granted a visitor
visa after successfully appealing to the
Immigration and Protection Tribunal on
humanitarian grounds.
Successful humanitarian appeals from
terminally ill people are rare. Records
going back to 1991 show only five
successful appeals, and only two of
those submitted by the terminally ill
person themselves.
Forty year-old Melaia Vakalala learned last
week that her appeal had been successful.
It was lodged in October. The appeal
also included her six-year-old daughter
Asenaca Vakalala Kuruduadua, who along
with Vakalala is a citizen of Fiji.
"I can actually sleep well at night
knowing I have gotten the visa and my
daughter has been granted residency,"
she said.
She says her case is "unusual" because
while she has been granted a visitor visa
for 12 months her daughter has been
granted a resident visa.
"Normally she would be granted a
resident visa because of me but not in
this case. We have both been treated
separately."
The primary reason for Vakalala being
granted the visa was the state of her
health and the non-availability of
palliative care in Fiji. She was diagnosed
with metastatic melanoma (advanced
skin cancer) in December 2013. She said
the fact all her family was in Timaru
and that she was paying for her own
treatment were also factors.

604.510.4088

Vakalala's parents moved to New

Zealand with her brother in 2000 (all are
New Zealand citizens) but she stayed
on in Fiji because she was working
as a teacher . She got married and her
daughter was born in December 2008,
but three years ago she separated from
her husband.
"I first came to New Zealand in 2003
to visit my family with more visits in
2004." In 2006 she developed ovarian
cysts and came back to New Zealand
to be operated on. In 2012 she was
diagnosed as having a tumour.
"In December 2013 I came back to New
Zealand to look after my mother after
my father was killed in a motor vehicle
accident and I was granted a visitor's
visa valid till April 2014."
She was also diagnosed with incurable
advanced skin cancer after her arrival in
December 2013 and although she applied
for further visitor visas in May 2014,
Immigration New Zealand declined her

info@fijitimescanada.com

application because she did not meet the

health requirements. Vakalala, with help
from her mother, has been paying for all
her medical procedures.
Vakalala and her daughter officially
became overstayers in September, 2014.
Her humanitarian appeal was lodged
the following month. The Immigration
Act 2009 provides for "exceptional
circumstances of a humanitarian nature
which would make deportment unjust
or unduly harsh, and it would not be
contrary to public interest to allow the
person to stay in New Zealand".
She is extremely grateful for the support
of her family, doctors, her lawyer and
immigration.
Vakalala's case is not the first of its kind.
The last one was on Oct 31, 2014 when
a 51-year-old Fijian citizen married to
a New Zealand resident was granted
a resident visa after his appeal on
humanitarian grounds because he was
terminally ill (stage 3 thymic carcinoma).

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana Is Name Of New

Royal Baby

Princess is 4th in line to the throne after her grandfather, her father and her brother George
Cambridge, royal officials said Monday.
Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles,

just 12 hours after Kate checked into
London's St. Mary's Hospital to give
birth. The baby weighed in at eight
pounds, three ounces (3.7 kilograms).
Bookmakers had taken huge amounts of

among the most popular guesses.
Earlier Monday, bells at Westminster

Hard Object In Romario Lewis

Underwear At JFK International Airport
Was Cocaine Packets

'Hard object' ... Romario Lewis,

from Jamaica, put two packages of
cocaine, weighing a half-kilo, down his
underpants.
WHEN a man tried to enter John F
Kennedy International Airport, US
Customs and Border Patrol had to be
impressed with the package in his
undies.
The hard object in the underwear of
Romario Lewis, from Jamaica, were
two packages, weighing a half-kilo
of cocaine, worth about $20,000, as
reported.
Lewis had exhibited numerous signs
of nervousness to arouse suspicion
of officers from the US Customs and
Border Patrol who were inspecting his
suitcase.
They pulled him aside and when
they patted him down they felt the

and discovered the cocaine shoved
between his underwear and a pair of
bicycle shorts that he was wearing
under his pants.
This seizure is another example of
our CBP officers being ever vigilant in
protecting the United States from the
distribution of illicit drugs, said Robert
E. Perez, Director of CBPs New York
Field Operations.
Lewis is now facing federal narcotics
smuggling charges for possession and
importation of cocaine.
His arrest came a little over a week
after officials detained Thenga
Adams, of Guyana, as he flew into
the same airport with $30,000 of
cocaine hidden in the soles of his
sneakers.

Fraser Health Issues Advisory To Patients Of

Unlicensed Dentist Valentyn Uvarov In Surrey

Health officials are warning clients of

a Surrey, B.C., man posing as a dentist
that they may have been exposed to HIV,
hepatitis B and C, or other blood-borne
infections due to non-sterile equipment.
Valentyn Uvarov was allegedly providing
dental treatments at 14275 62 Avenue in
Surrey without a licence, according to an
investigation by the College of Dental
Surgeons of B.C.
"At this point, he's under a court-ordered
injunction to never do this again," said
Jerome Marburg of the college.
Uvarov has also been ordered to pay the
college $10,000 by the B.C. Supreme
Court.
"That doesn't nearly cover the costs that
the college and its registrants pay for the
investigation and prosecution of this, but
it helps," said Marburg.
The
investigation
identified
"concerning" practices that may have
exposed patients to diseases such as
potentially reusing anesthetic containers,
according to a release from the Fraser
Health Authority.
Court documents detail 10 pages of
equipment seized from Uvarov's home by
the college, including surgical instruments,
root canal sealant, and dental pliers.
Uvarov claimed instruments were for
his family
The reporter spoke to Valentyn Uvarov
at the location of his alleged illegal
practice, and he claimed he only had a
few instruments to treat his family.

Surrey man Valentyn Uvarov has been accused by the College of Dental
Surgeons of BC of providing dental treatments without a license
"Nothing happened, but I have some
instruments in my house, for my family,"
said Uvarov.
When asked if he was treating patients
in his home, Uvarov said no, and closed
the door.
He gave a similar explanation to
investigators, saying he was only
treating friends and family, according to
the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C.
However, the equipment seized from his
home was consistent with a mediumsized dental practice, said the college.
Patients advised to talk to health care

provider
No proper records were found, so there's
no way to know exactly who was treated
and when, the college said.
The College of Dental Surgeons is urging
anyone who did get dental work from
Uvarov to see their health care provider.
"The most important thing is you get
proper care, nobody's going to fine you
or punish you if you go to somebody that
isn't licensed."
The Fraser Health also suggests Uvarov's
past clients can call the B.C. Nurses line
at 8-1-1.

New Zealand Man Accused Of Pulling Womens

Teeth Out With Pliers While Having Sex

A MAN pulled out a womans tooth

with pliers while they were having sex
because he liked gummy women a
court has heard.
New Zealander Philip Lyle Hansen has
pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including
unlawful sexual connection and charges
of wounding with intent to injure four
women between 1988 and 2011.
The New Zealand Herald reports that
the Wellington District Court in New
Zealand heard one woman was having
sex with Hansen in the back of his car
when he attacked her.
We were having sex and he started
talking about my tooth again I told him
not to touch it, the unnamed victim said.
I dont know why or how but he

604.510.4088

had these pliers and just had them on

my tooth and was shaking the tooth
backwards and forwards.
The tooth came out and he just threw it
out the window.
Crown prosecutor Sally Carter warned the
jury that during the trial they would hear
evidence about Hansens fascination or
obsession with them not having any teeth.
He liked his women without teeth, Ms
Carter said in her opening address.
Hansen was arrested in December 2012.
A suppression order to keep his name out
of the media was lifted in September last
year.
The three other victims reported similar
experiences with Hansen as they
continue to testify in court this week.

US Approves Cuba-Florida Ferry

Ferries are set to run between Florida and
Cuba for the first time in more than 50
years after the US government approved
new services.
Services between the two countries
stopped when the US imposed a trade
embargo on Cuba in 1960.
But Washington announced the restoration
of diplomatic ties in December last year.
The US government has now lifted the
ban and four ferry companies say they
have been given licences.
"Today's action was a great step
forward," said Joseph Hinson, president
of the Miami-based United Americas
Shipping Services.
"If all goes smoothly we could have
things up and running by September."
Havana Ferry Partners of Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, said it also had a
licence.
"This is a historical event. Thanks to
President Barack Obama, to whom we
are very grateful, for his leadership," the
firm wrote on its Facebook page.
Cargo
BBC Cuba correspondent Will Grant
says the latest announcement does not
necessarily mean that boats will start
launching for Cuban shores straight
away, as there are bureaucratic hurdles
to overcome in both countries.
However, it is another indication of

Washington's desire to put the policies

of isolating Cuba in the past and begin a
new era of co-operation, he adds.
A charter flight service from New York
City to Cuba, operated by JetBlue, has
been announced
A new charter flight service from New
York City, operated by JetBlue, had
already been announced.
The service was agreed during a recent
trade delegation of New York-based

companies to Cuba, led by state governor

Andrew Cuomo.
Despite the new flights and ferry
services, a travel ban on Cuba is still in
place for American citizens.
Only those who have the right paperwork
in 12 different categories are permitted
to visit the island.
Ferries will also be allowed to transport
cargo to Cuba, which sits 150km (90
miles) from southern Florida.

Alberta Election: NDP'S Surprise Win

Over Conservatives

Rachel Notley was born with orange

roots.
She came into the world, and a very
political world it must have been, two
years after her father helped found the
Alberta NDP.
She was four when her father, Grant,
became the nascent party's leader.
He went on to become a legend in Alberta
politics. Now his daughter seems poised
to join him.
A left-leaning party has won a surprise
victory in Alberta, one of Canada's most
conservative provinces.
The New Democratic Party (NDP) ended
the Progressive Conservatives' (PC) 44year rule of the province.
Political observers were stunned by the
result, with one commentator saying:

Alberta's Premier Jim Prentice, a former

member of Tory Prime Minister Stephen
Harper's cabinet, said he was stepping

He only became premier in September,
and called the snap election in April to

"My contribution to public life is now at
an end," Mr Prentice said as he conceded
defeat, blaming the collapse in oil prices

Lotto Blunder Blows Inspectors

Undercover Investigation

A SERVICE station in Los Angeles is under investigation after the winner of a lottery ticket worth $US75,000
was only given $US75 in cash.
It has been revealed that the ticket was
a fake and the winner was actually
a state compliance officer working
undercover.
What should have been a confidential
investigation has been blown wide open,
forcing officials to admit that the man
shown in the surveillance video was an
undercover investigator on a routine job.
Russ Lopez, a deputy director with
the California State Lottery, told the
reporter they are required to conduct
regular compliance checks to protect
our business, our players, and yes, our
retailers. Compliance is currently at 98
percent.
News outlets ran the story on Sunday
after the petrol station released video
of the purported winner in an attempt
to track him down and pay him the full
winnings.
The video of the March 25 incident shows

a man in a brown shirt and baseball cap

waiting as the clerk checks his ticket and
hands over the $75.
This is an odd situation, Mr Lopez told
the reporter. We dont want the public
looking for a winner that doesnt exist.
Authorities are now trying to determine
the intent of the service station clerk
or manager, and find out whether the
wrong amount was given deliberately or
whether it was a genuine mistake.
Station manager Shamsun Islam has
defended her employee, saying that he
was an honest person and that he would
never intentionally do anything wrong.
He made a mistake. He realised after
the guy left.
Ms Islam says the clerk saw the 75, but
overlooked the three zeros the followed
it.
After realising his error, the clerk alerted
Ms Islam, who in turn called her boss.

She says she was directed to call lottery

officials, which she did, but no one ever
came to pick up the ticket. After several
weeks, she decided to contact the media
in the hope of tracking down the $75,000
tickets owner.
It clicked in my mind: the media! Its
quicker than door-to-door, Ms Islam
said.
Meanwhile, lottery officials are trying
to confirm whether they were actually
informed about the ticket.
A receipt showing the value of the prize
is required to be printed after a winning
ticket is scanned, however, in this
instance the clerk did not give one to the
investigator.
For prizes over US$600, winners are
required to submit a claim to the state
lottery office.
The investigation into the matter is
ongoing.

minerals such as copper, magnesium
and potassium, which are all crucial for
keeping your body in top shape. Whether

wondering why you never liked Brussel
sprouts when you were a kid.

Spinach

Popeye the Sailor didnt rely on his can

of spinach for nothing. Incredibly, just
one cup of cooked spinach yields about
5 grams of protein, so clearly this is why
it worked so well for Popeye.
Of course, spinach is also a superfood as
it is loaded with vitamins, minerals and
antioxidants. Besides consuming cooked
spinach, try adding it to your sandwich or in
a salad for a quick and easy nutritional boost.
You will love adding spinach to your diet and

Broccoli

lentils are the king. Incredibly one cup

non-meat protein sources.

so you wont get the sudden spike in
your glycemic index, which makes them
that much better for you. Do yourself and

other tasty dishes.

When you were a child, broccoli stood

for everything you hated about food,
however, as an adult, you have probably
realized now that broccoli should be a
staple of your diet. This tasty and healthy
snack can yield up to 4 grams of protein
for every cup. So whether you are
steaming them up for dinner or dipping
them as a snack, rest easy knowing you
are getting an extra dose of protein.

you but believe it or not mushrooms are
loaded with protein. A cup of mushrooms
will give you about 2 grams of protein.
Mushrooms also have immune boosting
properties so you are not just getting a
little extra protein. Whether you decide
to bake them, add them to a stir fry or eat
them raw in your salad, they will most
certainly give your body a little extra
boost. While all mushrooms are great
for you, maitake, reishi and cordycep
varieties have among the highest
amounts of nutrients and immune
boosting properties.

be roasted, steamed or even blended.
Either way, you will be getting about 4
grams of protein per artichoke, so you
know these vegetables will keep you
filled for longer.

fibre, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium
and iron. This healthy vegetable should

Surprising Causes Of Constipation

What causes constipation? Well, the
obvious culprits include a low fiber
diet, repeatedly ignoring the urge to go,
not drinking enough water, or a lack of
exercise. Here are some possible causes of
constipation you may not have considered.
A common problem of constipation.
Well, the obvious culprits include a low
fiber diet, repeatedly ignoring the urge to
go, not drinking enough water, or a lack
of exercise.
But constipation also has other, lesswell-known causes, including certain
medications and supplements, as well as
potentially serious medical conditions.
Whats causing your gut trouble? Here
are possible causes of constipation you
may not have considered.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism, or an underactive
thyroid gland, slows the bodys metabolic
processeseven the gut.
Not everyone with an underactive thyroid
has constipation, nor do all cases of
constipation mean that the butterfly-shaped
gland in your neck is underperforming.
Painkillers
Painkillers, specifically narcotics, can
cause constipation.
A lot of receptors for the narcotic class
of drugs are in the digestive tract, so it
tends to bring everything to a halt.In
general, its a good idea for everyone
whos placed on one of these drugs to
also place them on a gentle laxative like
a stool softener.
Some studies (but not all) have suggested
that there might be a higher risk of
constipation for people who are chronic
users of pain relievers like aspirin and
ibuprofen.
Chocolate
Theres some evidence that chocolate
can cause constipation, though other
studies show chocolate may actually
help some people.
People with chronic constipation or
irritable bowel syndrome were more
likely than people without those problems
to say that chocolate caused constipation
(as did bananas and black tea).
Eliminate or cut back on chocolate
if you think it could be causing your
constipation.
Vitamins
Vitamins in general wont cause
constipation, but certain components, such
as calcium and iron, can be a problem.
Laxative overuse
Some laxatives work by stimulating

604.510.4088

bowel activity. Such stimulant laxatives

should be taken only as directed.
If used for long periods of time, stimulant
laxatives can lead to dependence,
meaning your body simply wont
function properly without them.
Stimulant laxatives include Dulcolax,
Ex-Lax, Senna, and others.
Dont take any medicationincluding
laxativesfor longer than instructed by
either the products label or your doctor.
Too much dairy
A diet high in cheese and other low-fiber/
high-fat foods such as eggs and meat can
slow down your digestion. The obvious
solution? Cut down on your intake of
such foods, and increase fiber intake to
20 to 35 grams a day.
If youre going to have cheeses and red
meat and eggs, mix in some salads or
other foods that have fiber and avoid fast
foods and processed foods, which are
generally low in fiber.
Antidepressants
Constipation can be associated with
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
(SSRI) antidepressants such as Prozac
(fluoxetine).
If youre taking an antidepressant and
have this side effect, think about using a
gentle stool softener.
Depression
Ironically, the very condition that
antidepressants are meant to treat
depressioncan also cause constipation.
Like hypothyroidism, depression causes
a general slowdown of the bodys normal
processes, which can also affect the bowel.
People with irritable bowel syndrome,
which can be closely linked to depression,
are also prone to constipation.
Antacids
Antacids are great for fighting heartburn, but
some can cause constipation, particularly
those containing calcium or aluminum.
Fortunately, the drugstore aisles are
crammed with options, so if one
medication is a problem you can try
something else.
You can also cut down on your risk of
heartburn by not overstuffing at meals.
And consuming fewer fatty foods and
more fiber will help prevent both problems.
Blood pressure and allergy meds

Constipation can be a side effect of

some common drugs used to treat high
blood pressure, such as calcium channel
blockers and diuretics.
Diuretics, for instance, lower blood
pressure by increasing urine output,
which flushes water from your system.
However, water is needed to keep stools
soft and get them out of the body.
Antihistamines used to treat allergy
symptoms can be a problem too.
Inflammatory bowel disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
includes two chronic conditions
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Both can cause cramping, weight loss,
bloody stools, and other health problems.
Chronic diarrhea is a common symptom
of both. However constipation can be a
problem too.
In ulcerative colitis, constipation can
be a sign of inflammation in the rectum
and in Crohn's disease it can be a sign
of an obstruction in the small intestine.
However if you have constipation alone,
without other symptoms, it's unlikely to
be due to IBD.
Childbirth
Constipation is common during pregnancy,
but childbirth itself can be a problem,
possibly due to sluggish abdominal
muscles or perhaps the use of pain relievers
or an anesthetic during the delivery.
Also, there may be some perineal
soreness right after the delivery, so the
fear of causing more discomfort may be
an important factor in the constipation.
Although stretch injuries during
childbirth can sometimes cause nerve
damage that leads to constipation, this is
less common.
Diabetes and neurological conditions
Diabetes can cause nerve damage that
can affect a persons ability to digest
food.
Most people with advanced diabetes
know they have it. Still, its reasonable
to do a blood sugar test on someone who
is regularly constipated.
Neurological conditions such as multiple
sclerosis or Parkinsons disease can cause
constipation. Usually, though, this goes
with another symptom such as trouble
urinating, double vision, or a gait problem.

Some Foods That Are Slowly Killing You

When it comes to food, our aim is usually
to go from feeling hungry to feeling
full, when what we should be seeking
is nourishment and nutrition. The focus
should be on quality, not quantity in our
food choices. For survival and optimal
health we know that the body needs the
right combination of protein, healthy
fats, whole grains, dietary fiber and a
full spectrum of minerals, vitamins,
phytonutrients and enzymes; but
many popular foods are also toxic or
addictive.
So beware of the following ten foods
which science has shown, may be tasty
or comforting but are slowly killing
you, by corrupting one or more of your
essential biological systems:
1. Alcohol
Alcoholic drinks are full of calories,
cause weight gain, bad skin and have
links to depression. Powerballing
Bellinis after work will likely lead
to poor emotional decisions, STDs and
a hard-to-shake case of self-loathing.
High blood pressure, low bone density,
osteoporosis and liver disease complete
the campaign of biological warfare we
wage on ourselves by abusing alcohol.
On the other hand, reports suggest that
one to two drinks per day may actually
help you live longer than teetotalers. But
dont abuse this statistic two drinks
per day does not mean that fourteen
beers on a Saturday is ok! The two
drinks is usually referring to a glass
of red wine providing the body with
needed antioxidants, not the shots of
Jack Daniels.
2. Sugar
Refined white sugar is toxic and causes
weight gain, heart disease, anxiety
and type 2 diabetes. When the liver is
polluted with fructose, it can turn to fat
and spike the bodys insulin resistance
leading to this type of diabetes. There is
also a link between the resulting elevated
insulin and breast and colon cancer.
Sugar is also known to be addictive and
triggers various behavioral and anxiety
reactions, and elevates a wide range of
compulsions and cravings.
3. Artificial Sweetener
Aspartame is an extreme toxin to the
body and is linked to high blood pressure,
Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. There
are over 90 different health conditions
affected by aspartame such as declining
vision, seizures, anxiety and depression.
As bad as sugar is, Aspartame is worse.

604.510.4088

Drink fresh pressed fruit or vegetable

juices and teas with natural sweetener
like stevia or honey which add sweetness
and micronutrients.
4. White Carbs
Refined flour carbs like white breads,
pasta and rice have very little nutrient
value and break down into simple sugars
quickly. This causes an insulin spike and
crash reaction which can lead to chronic
fatigue, weight gain, heart disease, high
blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes.
Substitute whole grains, quinoa and
kamut pasta for more digestible, nutrient
rich dishes, exploring healthier versions
of the comfort foods that you love in
moderation.
5. Potato Chips
Acrylamide is a chemical used in various
industrial processes like dyes, papers,
plastics, water treating systems and
adhesives. Acrylamide is a substance
formed from frying, broiling or grilling
certain plant foods like potatoes and
grains with certain amino acids and has
been found to cause cancer in laboratory
mice and rats. The World Health
Organization classifies acrylamide as
a probable human carcinogen. Sorry,
your best friend mister fried potato
is killing you softly ...one crunchy,
delicious bite at a time.
6. Dairy
Dairy is full of saturated fats and in the
U.S., Bovine Growth Hormone. Cows
milk is known to cause an inflammatory
response associated with cancer, allergies
and asthma. Dairy also interferes
with nutrient absorption, arthritis and
migraines. As an alternative, organic
milk and goats milk has have no added
hormones and are more easily digestible.
There are also delicious rice, nut or seed
milks like almond, coconut and hemp
milk. Studies show that cows milk
actually removes calcium from bones by
leaching calcium, which is alkaline, from
bones to combat the severe acidity from
milk. Thats why countries that consume
the least amount of dairy also have the
lowest incidence of bone fractures.
7. Trans Fats
This non-food, trans fat, mostly occurs
in high tech foods which add a hydrogen
molecule to keep vegetable oil solid at
room temperature. Trans fats increase
the shelf life of foods, but decrease
the lifespan of humans by increasing
the bad LDL cholesterol, and increasing
the risk of heart disease and stroke.

info@fijitimescanada.com

Common trans fats are found in fried

snacks and margarine. Replace trans
fats with avocado, extra-virgin olive oil
or hummus and try a delicious balsamic
vinegar as dip for whole grain bread.
8. Fast Food
Mass produced fast foods like
McDonalds have possibly the deadliest
cocktail of all. The film Supersize Me
proved that excessive eating of fast food
can cause permanent liver damage. A
deadly grind of red meat, salt, saturated
fat, sugar, preservatives all compound
to produce a toxic meal of super-illness
leading to headaches, nausea, vomiting
and addiction. If youre lovin it
regularly, you are also probably on a
fast-track to a dirt nap. Make delicious
burgers at home from leaner cuts of meat
or turkey and add some crunchy fresh
greens and baked veggie chips to make
it a truly happy meal.
9. Canned Soup
These are loaded with sodium, sugar and
preservatives canned soups have been
so successful because they are seen as
healthy and comforting. And homemade
soup really is a nutrient, comfort-giving
miracle! Soup loaded with a wide variety
of vegetables from nutrient-rich soil
is like winning the good health lottery.
Fresh, nutritious vegetables are scarce
in canned soups which are loaded down
with salt and preservatives to provide
a cheap food for the masses, but which
slowly destroys the health of those who
consume it regularly. Choose low sodium
or homemade soups as an alternative.
10. Bason
Preserved meats like bacon, hot dogs
and cold cuts are loaded with sodium,
nitrates and other biotoxins. Consuming
this preserved meat product weekly
increases your risk of colorectal cancer
by 21% and may cause heart disease.
One study found that people who ate
more than 160 g of deli meat or sausage
daily (that is only 2 Italian sausages or
3 slices of deli meat plus 3 small hot
dogs) had a 44% greater chance of
dying early from cardiovascular disease
or cancer than those who did not. The
risk of botulism is so high for factoryprocessed meats that a lethal injection
of salt, nitrates and other anti-botulism
chemicals add to the already high fat
content of red meat to make bacon
and your favorite assorted cold-cuts
biohazards. Keep preserved meats to a
vigilant minimum in your diet.

Aries

You will gain support from your

close friends. You can make use of
the week by participating in functions
and meeting new people. You need to
put more concentration in your work
in order to wield efficient control and
efficiency over your assigned tasks. You
face a number of challenges, and feel as
if you have to prove yourself all the time.
This is quite exhausting and unnerving,
which tends to put you on edge. Make
sure you keep your temper and avoid
unnecessarily showing your displeasure
towards those you are supposed to care
about most. Practice more self-restraint
and be more careful about how you treat
others. Unwanted expenses may occur
causing you to spend more. Financial
progress will be moderate for the week.
Don`t go in for major investments which
may not yield much profits. You will
maintain better rapport with your loved
ones. Pleasant exchange of words will be
possible among your family members.
Health will be fine and good, you will be
in a position to maintain physical fitness.

Taurus

Regular prayers to God will yield

beneficial results and give solace. You
can spend the week in spiritual pursuits
and chanting of divine mantras will
benefit you a lot. There may be some
disturbances in relations with your
subordinates. This week will give more
travel related to work. The stress youre
feeling is partly your own doing. In
asking too much of yourself, things
become even tougher, you end up in a
bad mood, nothing gets done despite all
your efforts. If in turn, you expect too
much from those close to you, you might
lose your temper with them. However,
this doesnt solve the problem, take time
out to reflect instead. Prospects are good,
take advantage of any opportunity you
get to let others know how committed
you are. You will be very busy in your
work for the week. You will have both
expenses and gains and you need to be
careful in handling money. There may
be some botheration with respect to the
progress of your children. Harmony
in relationship will be missing. Health
issues for mother will be present. You
may need to spend money for the same.

Gemini

This will make your week peaceful.

Spiritual inclinations will give you
relief and satisfaction. Travel related to

604.510.4088

such purposes will be possible. Turning

your attention in this direction will
benefit you a lot. Do things in your free
time that cheer you up and help you to
relax. Your accommodating manner and
friendliness does not go unnoticed. You
become increasingly popular whatever
type of environment youre operating
in. In private, too, you are able to make
headway with appropriate gestures and
winning ways that help you resolve any
disputes. Remember to spoil yourself
too, so your positive attitude can be
made to last. There can be fair chances
for you to secure appreciation from your
superiors for the work. Perform work
with courage and determination as this
is most essential for the week. You will
be able to enjoy fair standards of living.
There may be chances for you to earn
some fair level of income. Relationship
will be moderate. You may pick up
disputes with your elders. There is a need
to avoid such disputes. You may have
chances of headache and hypertension.
Relax yourself and observe prayers.

Cancer

It will be a week with less activity.

But you can spend the week in self
development. Avoid taking major
decisions. By adhering to organized
schedules and effective planning you
can handle the job pressure. This is
most required for the week. Unafraid
you take on more commitments even
though youve enough to do already. You
approach things in a rather unstructured
way and try to get too many things done
at once. Make sure you don't waste
time on irrelevant details or lose your
temper in the process. Be willing to
make compromises in your relationship;
if you don't you may be in for a lot of
arguments. Pay attention to the signals
your body sends you. This will make you
spend towards your family. Monetary
progress will be limited. But you have
possible chance to earn money from
unexpected sources like insurance etc.
You may have minor quarrel with your
mother. So there is a need for you to be
patient and understanding. You need to
do physical exercises or meditation to
keep yourself fit. Health care is essential
for the week.

Leo

You can keep your mind free. This week

is ideal for winning new contacts and
friends. Business related progress may
not be fully possible. You will receive
appreciation for the work that you

info@fijitimescanada.com

do. Gaining incentives and perks will

be possible. Give some much needed
attention particularly to those people
around you, who are less fortunate.
Whether you are currently in a partnership
or looking, your natural attraction is
higher than usual and may result in some
enjoyable intimate evenings being on
the agenda. Youre in danger of showing
off more than necessary. Your conduct is
unjustified, for in reality you feel more
uncertain in your dealings with others
than usual. Money will be available in
plenty for the week. You will be spending
money for useful purposes. There will be
happiness in the family. You will be able
to maintain good level of understanding
with your family members. Health will
be in good condition. Observe some
prayers to keep yourself relaxed and fit.

Virgo

You can spend the week in spiritual

pursuits and chanting of divine mantras
will benefit you a lot. There may be
some disturbances in relations with your
subordinates. You may well feel attracted
to someone, regardless of whether they
are available or not, this is a dangerous
area to contemplate and unless you want
to get yourself into trouble, do your
best to avoid dwelling on this type of
scenario. Depending on your character,
you either have your thoughts under
control or if not, deal with them as best
as you can. Healthy self-confidence and
high physical stamina make it likely
that you experience a very productive
period. Its important for you to let others
know your plans and make it clear youre
willing to show the necessary degree
of compromise that insures everyone is
satisfied. This week will give more travel
related to work. You will be very busy
in your work for the week. Monetary
progress will be average for the week.
You will have both expenses and gains
and you need to be careful in handling
money. There may be some botheration
with respect to the progress of your
children. Health would be normal this
week.

Libra

You can spend the week in spiritual

pursuits and chanting of divine mantras
will benefit you a lot. There may be
some disappointments or hurdles in
discharging your duties efficiently. Try
to be in good terms with your colleagues
at work. However, your high self-

confidence makes you rather ruthless
in certain situations and you show little
regard for those you leave behind as
long as you get what you want! Better
to think beforehand and not be so rash,
dont make unnecessary enemies of those
close to you, such insensitivity offends
your loved ones. If you allow this to
happen youre likely to need a great
deal of patience and tact to rectify the
situation. This week will give more travel
related to work. You will be very busy
in your work for the week. Monetary
progress will be average for the week.
You will have both expenses and gains
and you need to be careful in handling
money. There may be some botheration
with respect to the progress of your
children. Harmony in relationship will
be missing. You may get exhausted due
to over work. Health issues for mother
will be present. You may need to spend
money for the same.

Scorpio

You can put your mental resources to

task and gain good achievement. Be
relaxed and keep out of frustrations that
may be possible. You will get assistance
from your colleagues and this will
highly benefit you. Down to earth, youre
composed and confident in the way you
approach any outstanding issues and
developments both at work and on the
home front. The thorough approach you
take is complimented by the strength of
purpose that is apparent to all who know
you. You finish usual projects in an
efficient, determined way; get involved
with even more work and show how
capable and reliable you are. Job pressure
may be possible for the week. You may
need to plan a lot to carry out your work
in a proper manner. Gaining money from
insurance, inheritance will be possible.
But generally money flow may not be
very high. This week you may witness
contrary results in relationship. There
may be chances for heated arguments to
take place. Health care is most essential
for the week. You may be prone to cold
related problems, pain in thighs and legs.

Sagittarius

Fulfillment of desires will be possible.

Being alert to the changing situations
will help you take right action. However,
you stand to lose certain comforts for the
week. More efforts will be applied by
you in carrying out work. There will be
job pressure and you may need to cope

604.510.4088

up with the extra pressure. Other people

are drawn to you as increasingly the inner
calm you feel helps improve and further
develop your personal relationships.
Make sure you don't expend too much
energy on recreational activities,
concentrate on the fun aspect rather than
hard physical work. Feeling somewhat
invigorated, you feel able to take on
more responsibility both at work and on
the home front. Appreciation from your
superiors will be possible. Loss of money
will be possible for the week. You may
face unwanted expenses towards your
family. Casual outings will be possible
with your close ones. Relationship will
not be favorable for the week. You may
face uneasy moments in your family.
Health will be good generally. Keeping
away from worries will give you sound
health. Health will be moderate. You
may face headache and hypertension.

Capricorn

You will be able to satisfy your desires.

Make use of the week for taking major
decisions. Colleagues will be cooperative
and supportive to you. You will perform
well and your abilities will be brought
forth with respect to work. There will
be more tasks left for you. You prefer to
relax at home and practice developing
your creative skills, even if you are not
that convinced you possess any inventive
talent, youre more imaginative than you
realize. Don't be too extravagant with
your energy or money. Lazing around
is good for the soul but bad for your
bank account. There will be good results
gained through your work. But you may
face delays in achieving success in your
job. Money will be available in plenty.
You can make use of this money for
auspicious purposes. Casual outing with
your family members will be possible.
By this, you will have enough reason
to cheer up. Due to this there will be
unwanted mounting expenses. The week
is indicating comforts and so you will be
able to maintain smooth health.

Aquarius

The week will promote your interests

and will help you win many favors. This
will be possible by your hard work. Your
intelligence level will be appreciated
by your superiors. You will also be able

to maintain good relations with your

subordinates. Show some modesty and
keep your temper if you want to retain
your composure and the majority of your
friends. You make new contacts easily
and soon win over new friends. Close
relationships need more time though and
deserve to be cultivated and appreciated
for what they give you. Decide if these
new acquaintances are worth investing
time and effort in. Take a critical look at
yourself and see if these are just fleeting
acquaintances or something that endures.
You may need to plan a lot for spending
money in a useful manner. Money may
not be a problem for the week. You will
be able to save money also. You may be
troubled by insecure feelings which you
need to avoid. Progress and development
of your children will be a source of
concern for you. Physical fitness will be
in good condition. This you can maintain
it by doing meditation.

Pisces

You will find success for the week.

Make use of the week for taking major
decisions. Your thinking will also be
positive. Time may be a constraint for the
week and delays are possible in executing
your work. If you dont divulge how you
feel and be open towards those you love
they get frustrated that you have no time
to spend with them. Feeling vibrant and
alive, its an ideal time to finally deal with
areas of your life youve neglected for far
too long. If this doesnt apply, instead take
advantage of this welcome opportunity
to start something new and be prepared
to experience some exciting new
developments, once you open up to the
endless opportunities that are available
to you. Even easy efforts that you
perform related to work will do wonders
for you. You will possess the vital energy
for carrying out the same. Avoid taking
major decisions with respect to the same.
Quick money will be available for you.
You will be able to maintain good bank
balance. However, you may face distress
in relations with your siblings. There
will be happiness in the family. Your
words will be encouraging for others.
You may get tired and fatigued. There
may be sleeping problems for you. This
may cause problems in health.

Bollywood Superstar Salman Khan

Sentenced To Five Years In Jail In HitAnd-Run Case
An Indian judge has sentenced
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan
to five years in jail over the killing a
homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run
after a night out drinking.
Judge DW Deshpande found Khan
guilty of culpable homicide after driving
his Toyota Land Cruiser into a group
of homeless men sleeping rough in
suburban Mumbai after spending the
evening in an upmarket bar.
"After going through the arguments
put forth by both sides, I have come to
the conclusion that five years is proper
punishment," Mr Deshpande told the
packed sessions court.
One man was killed and several others
were injured in the incident.
Khan, the star of blockbusters such as
Dabangg (Fearless), looked stunned as
the sentence was read out, according to
reporters inside the courtroom.
But the actor was later granted bail ahead
of an appeal in India's notoriously slow
legal system.
He had always denied being behind the
wheel, but a prison sentence will now
potentially bring the career of one of
the Indian movie industry's biggest boxoffice stars to a shuddering halt.
Khan's lawyer Shrikant Shivade argued
against prison for his client. He said Khan
had given generously to charity and was also
suffering from a neurological condition.
But prosecutor Pradeep Gharat said that
"fines are not enough", adding that "the
punishment has to be a deterrent" to
others.
Bollywood stars took to Twitter to
express their support, with Arjun Kapoor
saying: "It doesn't matter what anyone or
any court says he doesn't deserve this at
any level."
But the wife of the man killed in the
incident, Begum Shaikh, said she had
been waiting a long time for justice,
adding: "We have gone through a lot of
hardships."
"Everything is so expensive and we
hardly have any income. My kids are
always under stress," she told local
media.
Trial finally begins after 12 years

604.510.4088

The trial began in earnest in 2014 after a

series of court hearings and legal hold-ups.
A string of prosecution witnesses,
including survivors of the crash, testified
that Khan was driving the vehicle when it
ploughed at speed into the men sleeping
on the street near a bakery in September
2002.
When 49-year-old Khan finally took the
stand in March, he pleaded not guilty
and told the court that his driver was
responsible for mounting the pavement
in the upmarket suburb of Bandra West.
The driver testified in court last month
that he had been behind the wheel, and
that the crash occurred after the front left
tire burst, making steering and braking
difficult.
But the judge found him guilty of all
charges including driving while under
the influence of alcohol.
A constable attached to Khan's security
detail said in his statement to police that
the drunk actor lost control of the car while
driving at about 90 kilometres per hour.
"The people were sleeping on the
footpath. Salman and (his cousin) Kamaal
ran away from the spot," the constable,
who died in 2007 of tuberculosis, said.
One of the sleeping labourers injured in
the accident said in his statement that
"Salman was so drunk he fell. He stood
but he fell again and then he ... ran away".

info@fijitimescanada.com

Khan was 'only drinking water'

Khan's lawyers said the action and
romantic comedy star had in fact been
drinking water all evening and had
climbed out of the driver's seat after the
accident because the passenger side door
had been damaged.
They also said that the victim, Nurulah
Mahbob Sharif, was killed during an
operation to move the car, when the
bumper fell off and landed on him, rather
than the crash itself.
Television news channels carried virtually
non-stop coverage on Wednesday, with
camera crews parked outside Khan's
home and surrounding the court.
Khan, the son of a respected film writer,
has starred in more than 100 films and
television shows since his first hit Maine
Pyar Kiya (I Fell in Love) in the 1980s.
But the body building actor is no stranger
to controversy off screen and he spent
more than a week behind bars for killing
an endangered Indian gazelle in 1998
during a hunting trip.
The verdict has been keenly awaited
both by his fans and Bollywood studios,
who stand to lose millions of dollars if
they have to cancel filming for movies
he has been signed up to.
One report by the Press of Trust of India
said more than $US31 million was riding
on the verdict.

Deepika Padukones Ex Live-In Boyfriend

Nihar Pandya To Make His BollywoodDebut!

The model who was dating Dippy during

their struggling days is finally on his way
to making it big!
Remember Nihar Pandya? The aspiring
actor best known for dating and being
in a live-in relationship with Deepika
Padukone, will now make his Bollywood
debut in a film directed by Dhanushs
elder brother Selvaraghavan.

Selva is now all set to remake one of

his Dhanush-starrers in Hindi, written
by Krish (the director of Gabbar Is
Back). Says a source, Selva has had an
interesting if chequered career in Tamil
cinema. He is ready for Hindi cinema
with a remake of his own Tamil film
Kaadhan Kondein, though on his own
terms.

Says the source, Selvaraghavan didnt

want to repeat the leading man in the
remake. He will certainly work with
Dhanush later. But hes making his Hindi
debut with Nihar Pandya in the lead.
While Hollywood production Marigold
was Nihars feature debut, the role
was nothing more than a friendly
appearance.

Far From The Madding crowd (PG)****

Lonely Girl!
Remakes can be tricky affairs. Young
and old who adore romance should be
glad Fox Searchlight Films got it right
with Far From The Madding Crowd.
While Julie Christie and Alan Bates
from the original classic are gone their
replacements are sure to create a stir and
favourable buzz. Share in the good times
at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas.
Pastoral splendour in the fabled
English countryside circa the 1870s
provides the perfect setting for this
idyllic tear-jerker. Affairs of the heart
can be eventful and a dynamic tug of war
for passionate favour lies at the hero of
this dazzling display. Emotions run high
as two "farmers" become entangled in a
merciless struggle for survival as their
futures become intertwined,
New to the region is young Bathsheba
Everdene. First impressions can never be
redone and captivating Carey Mulligan
(An Education) conveys an innocence
and fragility for which she could well
be Oscar bound. Through a twist of fate
the visiting lass's fortunes change. Being
good looking makes an impression on
the men of the rural farm region where
a laid back lust smoulders beneath the
surface of two dramatically diverse men.
Bachelor number one is about as plain
as they come and goes by the name of
Gabriel Oak. Newcomers to any region
need to "bond" with the natives and
Matthias Schoenaerts shows patience
beyond belief as a friend indeed to this
lovely lassie who for some reason is as
cautious as they come.
Sexual tensions are hidden and Ms.
Everdene must also come to terms with
William Boldwood, a wealthy land baron
smitten by her charms. Not at all bold in
his pursuit of marital bliss is Michael
Sheen (Frost/Nixon) who shines as the
moneyed Prince Charming.
Director Thomas Vinterberg (The
Hunt) pulls off a captivating romantic
epic whose lush cinematography of the
gorgeous English countryside is what
dreams are made of. True success of this
movie rests on the petite shoulders of
Carey Mulligan who seizes the day and
runs off with more than a few hearts.

Talking With Your Kids About Drugs

Don't put off talking to your children
about alcohol and other drugs. As
early as fourth grade, kids worry about
pressures to try drugs.
School programs alone aren't enough.
Parents must become involved, but
most parents aren't sure how to tell their
children about drugs.
Open communication is one of the most
effective tools you can use in helping
your child avoid drug use. Talking freely
and really listening shows children that
they mean a great deal to you.

What do you say?

Tell them that you love them and
you want them to be healthy and happy.

Say you do not find alcohol and
other illegal drugs acceptable. Many
parents never state this simple principle.

Explain how this use hurts
people. Physical harm - for example,
AIDS, slowed growth, impaired
coordination, accidents. Emotional
harm - sense of not belonging, isolation,
paranoia. Educational harm - difficulties
remembering and paying attention.

Discuss the legal issues. A
conviction for a drug offense can lead
to time in prison or cost someone a job,
driver's license, or college loan.

Talk about positive, drug-free
alternatives, and how you can explore
them together. Some ideas include
sports, reading, movies, bike rides,
hikes, camping, cooking, games, and
concerts. Involve your kids' friends.

How do you say it?

Calmly and openly - don't
exaggerate. The facts speak for themselves.

Face to face - exchange
information and try to understand each
other's point of view. Be an active listener
and let your child talk about fears and
concerns. Don't interrupt and don't preach.

Through "teachable moments"
- in contrast to a formal lecture, use a
variety of situations - television news,
TV dramas, books, newspaper.

Establish
an
ongoing
conversation rather than giving a onetime speech.

Remember that you set the
example. Avoid contradictions between
your words and your actions. And don't
use illegal drugs, period!

Be creative! You and your child
might act out various situations in which
one person tries to pressure another to
take a drug. Figure out two or three ways
to handle each situation and talk about
which works best.

Exchange ideas with other
parents.

How can I tell if a child is

using drugs?
Identifying illegal drug use may help
prevent further abuse. Possible signs
include:

Change in moods - more
irritable, secretive, withdrawn, overly
sensitive, inappropriately angry.

Less responsible - late coming

home, late for school or class, dishonest.

Changing friends or changing
lifestyles - new interests, unexplained
cash.

Physical deterioration - difficulty
in concentration, loss of coordination,
loss of weight, unhealthy appearance.

Why do kids use drugs?

Young people say they turn to alcohol

and other drugs for one or more of the
following reasons:

To do what their friends are
doing.

To escape pain in their lives.

To fit in.

Boredom.

For fun.

Curiosity.

To take risks.
Take A Stand!

Educate yourself about the facts
surrounding alcohol and other drug use.
You will lose credibility with your child
if your information is not correct.

Establish clear family rules
against drug use and enforce them
consistently.

Develop your parenting skills
through seminars, networking with other
parents, reading, counseling, and support
groups.

Work with other parents to set
community standards - you don't raise a
child alone. Volunteer at schools, youth
centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, or other
activities in your community.

Tips For Getting Kids To Drink More Milk

Milk is one of the most nutritious choices
that kids can make at home or at school.
It's a
natural, nutrient-packed food that is a
"good" or "excellent" source of nine
essential nutrients
that growing children need for good
health and strong bones. Here are some
easy tips to follow
to ensure your kids get the three servings
of milk they need each day.
1. Serve milk ice-cold, the way kids like
it, between 35-40 degrees F. Pour it right
before serving and promptly return the
container to the refrigerator so the milk
maintains its fresh taste.
2. Be a role model. When children see
you drink milk, they are more likely to
drink it, too.
3. Serve milk at meals. Set expectations

604.510.4088

ahead of time that milk is the beverage

of choice at meal times.
4. Serve flavored milk. Kids love it, and
ounce for ounce it has the same nutrients
as unflavored milk.
5. Stock the fridge with single-serve
containers of white and flavored milk for
grab n go.
6. Serve milk in special glasses and with
a straw. Let older kids use mix-ins to
create a new milk flavor.
7. Let children use a straw to drink the
milk left in the bowl after finishing their
cereal.
8. Order low-fat flavored milk in kidfriendly, single-serve containers instead
of soda when eating out.
9. Remind children to drink milk with
School Lunch. Studies show that when
children drink milk at lunch, they

info@fijitimescanada.com

have higher intakes of several critical

nutrients, including calcium, zinc and
vitamin A.
10. Send milk money and have children

Vancouver Canucks: Waiting it Out, WideRanging Jim Benning Interview

As the dust settles on the Vancouver
Canucks' 2014-15 season, it's tempting
to look forward to player moves that the
team can make this summer.
For me, it's far too early. The foundation
of the NHL is still in flux with coaches
and general managers changing positions
and playoff results still to be determined.
We need to be patient before we'll even
get a good look at the lay of the land.
On Monday, Lou Lamoriello pulled a
rabbit out of his hat when he announced
that former Pittsburgh Penguins' general
manager Ray Shero would take over the
reins for the New Jersey Devils. Lou
stays on as team president at age 72, but
that move could trigger some changes in
the Devils organization that hadn't been
previously anticipated.
The coaching fabric of the league
also remains undetermined until Mike
Babcock makes his decision on if
he's going to leave Detroit and, if so,
where he'll sign. I don't think any of
the other current coaching vacancies
will be filled until Babcock declares
his intentions.
For that matter, more heads may roll
before the playoffs are over. Last year,
Pittsburgh didn't clean house until after
they lost in the second round. Would jobs
be in jeopardy if the New York Rangers
lose this round to the Washington
Capitals? Orhypotheticallyif the
Flames somehow stage the comeback of
the year against Anaheim??
At this time last year, the Canucks were
in the throes of their own organizational
change. All through the playoffs, we
watched the general manager and
coaching searches play out, with Jim
Benning eventually hired on May 21 and
Willie Desjardins on June 23.
This year, the organization is stable.
It's going to be a long time before any
wheeling and dealing begins.
The interview starts off a bit bumpy, but
gets more substantial as the 15 minutes
rolls along. Here are the highlights, and
I attempt to read between the lines along
the way:

Benning wonders if the
Canucks had trouble moving past the
surprise loss in Game 1 against Calgary.
Says he's not sure why that would
happen with such an experienced group.
Was also surprised that the team didn't
respond better on the road in Calgary.

He gives credit to Flames
players like Ferland and Sam Bennett for

stepping up. The unspoken part of that

thought seems to be that the Canucks
didn't have players that responded in a
similar fashion.

When asked if the organization
already has the young players that it
needs to get faster and more physical,
Benning says yes. Cites Jake Virtanen
as his prime example, and also mentions
the great Game 5 that Brendan Gaunce
laid down against the Chicago Wolves
last weekend.

Benning reiterates that no
young player will be given a spot,
however. Opportunities will have to
be earned. He believes that Willie
Desjardins is on the same page when it
comes to working younger players into
the lineup.

When asked about impending
free agents Shawn Matthias and Brad
Richardson, Benning says he's in
discussions with their agents and needs
to find out how much money they want.
Admits that if they decide to keep either
player, they'll have to "clear out some
money" to make room.

Regarding players with notrade clauses, he says that no decisions
have been made yet, but if there's a move
that can be made to improve the team
specifically, a player that other teams
wantthen they'll go to the player to see
if something can be done.
It sounds like the door is very open if a
good opportunity presents itselfand
these comments could apply to anybody
from Ryan Miller to Radim Vrbata to

Kevin Bieksa and on down the line...

Reiterates that the Sbisa
signing was necessary because he's 25
years old and Hamhuis and Bieksa are
set to become unrestricted free agents
in one year. Sbisa skates well and he's
physical. Needed to make sure the team
has some defensive depth under contract.

It'll be up to Travis Green
whether or not Jake Virtanen or Jared
McCann see any playoff action with
the Utica Comets. They'll practice with
the team and could get into the lineup
if there's an injury situation or other
circumstance.
Rintoul also mentions that Nicklas
Jensen was a healthy scratch in Game 5
against Chicagopulled from the lineup
to make room for Brendan Gaunce.
Benning says Jensen still needs to play
a more complete game and has had an
up-and-down year. Their job is to keep
working with him.

Benning says he spoke with
Jordan Subban's reps on Monday and
they're working to get a deal done.

Finally, Rintoul asks what
changes have been made to the Canucks
scouting department since Benning took
over last season. He says that the scouts
have been given definitions and clear
criteria of things that are important when
watching players. The goal is to simplify
the language in scouting meetings, to
ensure that everyone's on the same page.
Benning believes that the scouts have
made great strides this year, and that
their jobs have been made easier.
