cMinnville locals refer to their

main drag as the communitys
living room. Nestled in the
Willamette Valley, downtown
McMinnville has been the heartbeat
of Yamhill County since before it was
incorporated in 1876.

The McMinnville of today is rich in
history and small town charm. Quaint
boutiques, unique shops, and local
galleries abound. Music fills the air
from our farmers market performers
and outdoor concerts all summer long,
and pours out of our restaurants and
pubs on winter evenings.
McMinnville was voted
first runner-up by
Parade Magazine for best
mainstreet in September
2014. Locals would agree
there is just something so comforting and
exciting about McMinnville that sweeps
people off their feet.

They are authentic, a little rough
around the edges in a beautiful way, and
undeniable friendly, said Sunny Miller, a
McMinnville resident.

McMinnville is on the rise blossoming into a trendy scene that has
something to offer everyone. The little
town wasnt always thriving. The little
town situated in the Willamette Valley
began to flourish in the mid 1980s when
the wine industry started to blossom.
Many of the gems and amenities available
in McMinnville are due to the lavish
Willamette Valley and vineyards in the
surrounding hills. Quality wine deserves
excellent food, accomodation and
experiences. Locals can sip pinot noir from
vineyards just outside the city limits.

Pedestrians might pop into Grain
Station Brew Works to sample their craft
beers, or browse American-made vintage
clothes and decor at Rag n Bone/Mid
Mod. Then they can enjoy a five-star meal
at Thistle, which buys its produce from
family farms within 45 miles.

Theres a real homey vibe to
McMinnville - explore McMinnville and
youll know what were talking about.

One thing I enjoy having McMinnville as a home town are the sidewalks of Third Street: the flower boxes, the outdoor tables and

Historic Downtown
During the towns resurgence, 15 blocks were added
to the National Register of
Historic Places, many lined
with the brick buildings that
replaced the first structures
built by settlers who arrived
on the Oregon Trail.
McMinnville was founded
by William T. Newby, a pioneer from McMinnville, Tennessee who arrived in Oregon
on the first wagon train that
came west during the Great
Migration of 1843.
Newby built a gristmill at
the west end of Thirst Street,
below the present city library.
Construction of this mill was
the primary reason for the

growth of the city. McMinvvile

became a town in 1876 and in
1892 the city had two public
schools, two banks, two flour
mills, two newspapers, five
churches, a county courthouse and a college.
Now McMinnville is home
to more than 30,000 people
and a melting pot of amenities.

Annual Loose Goose Hot Air Balloon Rally

Gobble up fun at 55th annual Turkey Rama

No need to go cold turkey on fun this summer. Gobble up a quirky
good time at Macs signature summer festival - the annual McMinnville
Turkey Rama.

The event was founded by the Chamber of Commerce as a way to
celebrate the turkey industry that flourished once upon a time ago. once

thriving turkey industry.

Beginning in the 1930s until around the 60s, McMinnvilles turkey business took flight. In 1938, McMinnville hosted the first ever Pacific Coast Turkey Exhibit
- a one day event complete with activities and prizes.
The event started to gain national recognition and by
the 1940s, the Turkey Exhibit was one of the largest
celebrations in the nation. In 1961, the name Turkey
Rama was formally adopted for the festival.
By the 1970s turkey farming had increased drastically. By 1986, McMinnville accounted for more than 90
percent of Oregons total turkey production. However,
a recall on turkeys processed at a Willamette Valley
turkey plant near Salem and competition from California and Midwest turkey farmers led to the demise of
McMinnvilles turkey industry by the end of the decade.
Despite the industrys collapse, McMinnville still
gathers once a year to commemorate the flock of
turkey attention that their town once received. Even
in its 55th year, a cornucopia of events still take place
around town. Live bands play and typically a street dance breaks out
on the corner of Davis Street and Third. A carnival, complete with corn
dogs, a ferris wheel and arcade games takes place in the Oregon Mutual
Insurance parking lot. Merchants are set up outside along Third Street
throughout the day and a Turkey BBQ at Wortman Park occurs all weekend long, and turkey halves are available to devour too.

Before entertainment using turkeys was forbidden in the 80s,
top turkey breeders were recognized as well as turkey farmers with the

underway at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum.

The weekend of events lifts off Friday August 14 with an

educational day on the Main Campus. Students will learn

how to crew a hot air balloon as well as how they operate in
the sky.

On Saturday morning, a total of 22 hot air balloons will

lift off from the Museum Campus and into the sunrise.

Its a breathtaking moment that we all share as the

balloons climb the sky, said Melissa Grace, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Evergreen Aviation & Space
Museum. Its a peaceful way to spend a Saturday morning.

Saturday evening, the hot air balloons will linger over the

South of the Evergreen Theater building. Beginning at 6 p.m.

the balloons will light up for the annual Night Glow.
They look like giant lightning bugs in the sky, Grace said.
Its the perfect ambiance for a summer concert on the lawn
surrounded by giant airplanes.

On Sunday morning at 5:30, there will be another morn-
