3) What is HIV / AIDS?
Human immunodeficiency virus attacks and destroys the infection-fighting CD4 cells of the immune
system. Loss of CD4 cells makes it difficult for the body to fight infections and certain cancers. Over time,
HIV can destroy so many of your CD4 cells that your body can't fight infections and diseases anymore.
When that happens, HIV infection can lead to AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

4) How is HIV spread?

HIV is spread through the blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk of a person infected with HIV. You
cant get HIV by shaking hands or hugging a person infected with HIV. And you cant get HIV from contact
with objects such as dishes, toilet seats, or doorknobs used by a person with HIV.

7) How can I know if I have HIV?

Antibody tests are the most common HIV tests look for HIV antibodies in your body, rather than looking
for HIV itself. Example of this would be Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) tests and Rapid HIV antibody
tests using blood, oral fluid, or urine to detect HIV antibodies. Antigen Tests are not as common as
antibody tests, but they can be used to diagnose HIV infection earlier. Antigen tests require a blood
sample. PCR Test (Polymerase chain reaction test) detects the genetic material of HIV itself, and can
identify HIV in the blood.
8) Is there a cure for HIV / AIDS?

The treatment for HIV infection is called antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART prevents HIV from multiplying
and destroying infection-fighting CD4 cells, which helps the body fight off infections and certain cancers.
ART can prevent HIV infection from advancing to AIDS.
ART cant cure HIV, but it can help people infected with HIV live longer, healthier lives. By reducing the
amount of HIV in the body, ART also reduces the risk of HIV transmission.
9) International AIDS candlelight Memorial

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is one of the worlds oldest and largest grassroots
mobilization campaigns for HIV awareness in the world. Started in 1983, the International AIDS
Candlelight Memorial takes place every third Sunday in May and is led by a coalition of some 1,200
community organizations in 115 countries.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial serves as a community mobilization campaign to raise social
consciousness about HIV and AIDS. With 33 million people living with HIV today, the International AIDS
Candlelight Memorial serves as an important intervention for global solidarity, breaking down barriers of
stigma and discrimination, and giving hope to new generations
