On May 1st 1994, the tragic death of three-time Formula
One World Champion, Ayrton Senna, interrupted the most prestigious and successful racing career in history. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1960, Senna cultivated discipline, determination, courage and motivation within himself and dreamed to inspire hope and confidence to unlock the unlimited potential present in every human being. Brazil is the worlds 9th richest economy, yet ranks 70th in human development. Sennas passion was to close this void and said If we want to change things, we must begin with the children, offering inspiration and education His dream became his legacy. His funeral halted a nation as forty million people lined the highway during the procession. There is not a single Brazilian that does not know and respect his name. The Senna Institute was formed in November 1994 and is run by just 7 directors: his sister Vivienne, three entrepreneurs, a childrens teacher, a journalist/communicator and a tax lawyer. To date, (2006) the Institute has assisted 1.5 million children to get an otherwise unavailable education, involving 68,000 educators, partnering 11,000 schools and universities of 1,360 cities in 25 states around Brazil. They run 2 major programs; Education and Self Development through Sport, and Education through Health and Nutrition.
The Senna Foundation works for the human development
of (Brazilian) children and youth in co-operation with federal, state and local governments, with private enterprises and businesses, and with civil society organizations. The Institute had become so successful in its first 10 years that the Advanced Center was created for the ongoing education of the children now approaching adulthood. The Center is now open to all Brazilians, not just graduates of the Senna Institute. The Foundation has its own publishing library, to date having published 18 human development textbooks. Ayrton Sennas legacy is to promote motivation, dedication, determination, confidence and even perfection in the pursuit of dreams. He believed, and the Foundation teaches, that every human being has unlimited potential, everyone can strive to become better and overcome difficulties, and dreams can be realized. Throughout Brazil, Ayrton Senna has; 6 highways, 21 avenues, 5 squares, 7 streets, 5 bridges, 2 bikeways, 1 tunnel, 4 monuments and several schools named after him. Grand Prix circuits bear his name all over the world and he is the subject of more than 80 books. He is my hero and my mentor. I met him briefly and casually at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone where he told me that there are winners, and a lot of other people. Not just on the racetrack, but in life. Think, choose, learn and become. Adeus meu amigo e obrigado. Farewell my friend, and thank you.
