Issue 1 1
December 2009 CNUT Release 3.20.7 Release Notes

Overview
The Motorola Network Updater Tool (CNUT) is a free-of-charge tool that applies packages to upgrade
the following device types:
◦ PMP 100 Series FSK APs and SMs
◦ PMP 300 Series 802.16e APs and SMs
◦ PMP 400 Series OFDM APs and SMs
◦ PTP 100 and 200 Series FSK Ethernet Bridges
◦ PTP 300, 400, 500, and 600 Series OFDM Ethernet Bridges
◦ PLV Modem
◦ PLV MDU Gateway
◦ CMMmicro
◦ CMM4, but not its integrated switch
These release notes communicate the differences between CNUT 3.12 and CNUT 3.20. Users may
upgrade to CNUT 3.20 from any previous release of CNUT except 1.0.

CNUT 3.20.5 or 3.20.7 is required for operators whose

networks include PMP 320 APs and SMs, CAP 110s, and/or
radios operating on System Release 9.5.

CNUT 3.20.7 is required for operators whose networks include

5.7-GHz PMP 430 Series OFDM radios and/or radios operating
on System Release 10.1, or who need the features that were
introduced in CNUT 3.20.5 but are operating their CNUT
application on a Linux platform.

With the release of 3.20.7, 3.20.5 is no longer available for

download.

Dependencies of CNUT
Supported Operating Systems
CNUT 3.20 does not support Red Hat Linux v9 or Enterprise Linux v3, which are both out-of-date
according to Red Hat's own documentation. Although nothing direct prevents their usage, CNUT 3.20
is not tested for use with these OSs, and customer support will not be able to provide support to
customers who are using one of these out-of-date operating systems.

Specifically, CNUT 3.20 supports

◦ Windows Platforms (32-bit OS)
− Windows 2000
− Windows Server 2003
− Windows XP or XP Professional
◦ Red Hat Enterprise Linux (32-Bit OS)
− Version 4
− Version 5

2 Issue 1
CNUT Release 3.20.7 Release Notes December 2009

CNUT 3.20 may successfully function on 64-bit versions of these OSs, but has not been tested on
them and, consequently, is not supported on them.

Required Ports
CNUT 3.20 requires the following ports to be open on the host device:
◦ ftp, Ports 20 (active) and 21 (active and passive) in TCP
◦ tftp, Port 69 in UDP
◦ telnet, Port 23 in TCP
◦ http, Port 80 in TCP
◦ snmp, Port 161 in UDP
◦ for enabling/disabling SM autoupdate, Port 2501 in UDP

Java Runtime Environment

Since the external tools in CNUT 3.20 require that JRE Version 1.5 or later is running on the host
machine, the installation tool for CNUT 3.20 loads a proper version of JRE.

Features New in CNUT 3.20.5 and CNUT 3.20.7

CNUT 3.20 introduces the following features:
◦ Capability to scan multiple non-contiguous ranges of IP addresses, form a list of all of the
valid ones, and discover and push packages (image files) to all of the devices that are on that
list.
◦ Capability to support device types that become available after CNUT 3.20 is generally
available. This capability will be realized by patching CNUT with a distinct template file for
each new device type, as opposed to a full update of CNUT software.
◦ Support for system releases through 9.5.
◦ Support for PMP 430 Series OFDM devices. CNUT 3.20.7 adds support for these devices in
the 5.7-GHz frequency band range.
◦ Support for 20-MHz channel OFDM AP. This support includes a new settable Channel
Bandwidth parameter that allows CNUT to optionally push the image for a channel bandwidth
at which the device is not currently operating.
◦ Support for PMP 320 Series SMs.
◦ Support for SNMPv1. This is the protocol required for SNMP messaging to and from the newly
supported PMP 320 Series devices.
◦ Support for SNMPv3. This is the protocol required for SNMP messaging to and from future
PTP devices.
◦ External tools rebuilt and rearranged for the Prizm library as follows:

Fixes New in CNUT 3.20

Item
Description

The cursor now reverts from an hourglass to a pointer when a user-initiated operation has
2342
completed.
If an element update operation fails, a refresh of the element follows to ensure that CNUT is
2733
reporting the resulting software and firmware version that the element is running.

4 Issue 1
CNUT Release 3.20.7 Release Notes December 2009

Item
Description
Ref #
CNUT no longer returns a No Programmable Network Elements selected message
when only elements that are currently in auto-update mode are selected when an
7858 Update Selected Network Elements operation is launched. Instead, it returns the message
No programmable elements select One or more AP(s) in auto-update
mode.
Operators are now able to report to technical support personnel what specific patches have
7898
been installed upon their CNUT release. (This helps in troubleshooting.)
The Reboot Unit external tool no longer fails to reboot an SM when
8275
Selected Network Elements is selected and the AP is selected in addition to the SM.
The Customer Support Information Tool in CNUT sometimes failed to shut down. (This
8215 behavior has not been seen or reproduced in releases since CNUT 3.10.) When this occurred,
the workaround was to shut down and restart the CNUT application, and then close the tool.
The Customer Support Information Tool now prompts the user for confirmation before
8282
overwriting a previous dump file in the save operation.
The default external tools other than Gather Customer Support Information now support a
8302
user account other than root.
The Set Access Point Authentication Mode Tool now exits with Exit status:0 if the tool is
8313
launched with no elements having been selected.
The Remove operation for packages in a package list is now predictable: highlights are
8335 ignored, and a click of the Remove button deletes only and all of those packages whose
check box is checked.
9177 CNUT now always displays the firmware platform for auto-discovered SMs.
When the Auto Update feature is enabled, CNUT no longer needs to be set to the
9518 ViewˆContinuous Refresh, in order to correctly reflect state changes in SMs that are either
direct children of the AP or discovered to SM Root.
When the AP is designated as a file server, CNUT no longer switches from selected packages
9831 to unselected ones, provided that the user has selected at least one SM platform in the
configuration dialog. The platform order that CNUT uses will be the order configured there.
The Save Text to File operation now prompts the user for confirmation before overwriting a
9863
previous dump file in the save operation.
Operators on a Windows platform who open a file that was exported from CNUT via the
9865 Save Text to File button in the Gather Customer Support Information dialog no longer have
trouble (related to line feeds) viewing the contents in Notepad.
If you highlight one of the tools in the External Tool Editor window (accessed via the
ToolsˆEdit External Tool Menu command option), click to highlight a specific tool, and
9880 then click the Edit button, you can modify the properties of that tool. However, while doing
10022 so, if you uncheck the option Supports Help (Add to Help Menu) and save your changes,
that tool can later be added back into the set of tools for you to access. It is no longer
permanently removed from both the HelpˆTools menu and the External Tool Editor window.
The CNUT interface no longer incorrectly represents PMP 400 (4.9-GHz OFDM Access Point and
9977
Subscriber Module) as ULAP and OSU.
If the technician performing the upgrade of CNUT to a later version of CNUT allows sufficient
9990 time (up to half a minute) for the embedded uninstaller to complete its function, then CNUT no
longer fails to launch after the upgrade.

Item
Description

CNUT 3.20 now encrypts all of the new passwords, and converts all of the pre-existing
passwords, for the network devices in the .net file. This has the added advantage that the
.net file, when exported to another management computer, can be read by CNUT or Prizm on
10655
that machine. Hence, the user does not need to keep a separate list of device passwords to
perform CNUT or Prizm operations from the new machine on elements that were successfully
managed from the old one.
When CNUT cannot distinguish the login ID or password of an SM, CNUT can continue to
10681
the next if the user clicks Cancel.
CNUT no longer occasionally hangs when a polled element fails to return its status and or
10682
version number.
10684 Username and password for devices are no longer stored as text in the .net file.

Fixes New in CNUT 3.20.7

The Customer Support Information Tool in CNUT sometimes failed to shut down. (This
8215 behavior has not been seen or reproduced in releases since CNUT 3.10.) When this occurred,
the workaround was to shut down and restart the CNUT application, and then close the tool.
On a Linux platform, network discovery in CNUT 3.20.5 failed to generate a .net file that has
12179
contents.
11204 The Autoupdate feature in CNUT 3.20.5 did not update SMs that it discovered behind OFDM
11818 APs.

Known Issues
CNUT Logging the Wrong IP Address for the AP and for an Autoupdating SM, and Correlating
the SM with the Wrong LUID
An AP that is set to autoupdate the SMs in its sector may be represented in the CNUT log as having
the IP address of one of its SMs, with a LID that does not correspond to that SM. The workaround for
this problem is to refresh the AP in CNUT immediately before launching the autoupdate from that AP.
(Item Ref #8101 and #8238)

Semicolons Being Problematic in External Tools and Radios Passwords

CNUT’s external tool interface uses a semicolon delimited list to pass input parameters to the external
tools. One of the input parameters is the radio password. If a radio password contains a semicolon,
and that element is selected to be manipulated by an external tool (either a customer supplied
external tool or one of the tools included with the CNUT installation), there could be issues with the
proper processing of the tool and/or element. To work around this issue where External Tools usage is
desired, the user should change the passwords on the network elements, such that they do not
contain semicolons.

Encryption Type Not Available from Certain SMs

CNUT (as well as Prizm) relies on the link table in the radio to distinguish and display the encryption
type of the radio. Certain SMs (for example, those that operate on System Release 9.0) do not include
this as a field in their link tables. The workaround for this problem is to upgrade the system release in
these radios to the current release.

6 Issue 1
CNUT Release 3.20.7 Release Notes December 2009

However, there is not and has not been a risk of CNUT pushing the wrong encryption package to such
a radio, though, since CNUT correctly discovers the encryption type as it discovers the SM through its
IP address.
(Item Ref #8122)

Horizontal Scroll Deep Function Improperly Formatting the Element Table

A toggle-type command option is added to the main menu to enable horizontal scroll bar.
The ViewˆHorizontal Scroll Deep Tree selection allows the user to see subfolders/subelements
beyond the 55th record to any desired depth of elements. However, the element column eclipses all
other columns.

(Item Ref #10658)

SM Parallel to AP in Hierarchy Not Being Rebooted to Enforce Software Upgrade

The CNUT command to an SM that it reboot following a pushed software upgrade is issued through
the AP parent. However, when an SM is discovered because the operator added the SM to the
network root folder, the parent-child relationship that CNUT depends on for issuing this command is
not established in the network hierarchy by which CNUT knows the network. Consequently, even
though the push of the software package succeeds in these cases and the event log of the SM
includes the event Flash Image Update OK, the enforcement of the upgrade fails and the
following error is thrown to the CNUT log:

Verification Failed: Mismatch between package SW version and device SW

version! Please manually reboot the device.

As long as CNUT relies on the .net hierarchy for parent-child relationship information, this issue will
exist. The workaround is to use an interface other than CNUT after the package push (for example,
Prizm or the management web interface of the SM), to command the SM to reboot.

MAC Addresses Appearing to Be Truncated for PMP 320 APs

The ESN column of the network viewer in the CNUT interface shows the ESN (MAC address) string for
each PMP 320 AP in the format in which the device sends it to CNUT: with dots separating each
hexadecimal digit. When the width of this column fits the length of non-delimited ESNs (strings of ten
contiguous hex digits), only a truncated view of delimited ESNs is available in this column.
(Item Ref #12592)

CNUT Software Installation

The CNUT 3.20.7 installation tool successfully runs without preconditions on either a machine without
CNUT or a machine that has a previous version of CNUT installed.

General Installation Information

The CNUT 3.20.7 installation is a single-file Install Anywhere process. The installation file can be
downloaded from http://motorola.wirelessbroadbandsupport.com/software/. The operator downloads
either the Windows version (.exe) or the Red Hat Linux version (.bin) of the installer. When the
operator double-clicks on the installation file, the wizard assists the operator through the installation.
CNUT 3.20.7 automatically detects whether a previous release of CNUT is already installed and, if it
detects one, prompts the operator to upgrade the CNUT installation on their computer. This is the
recommended installation practice, because the tool in this case automatically imports existing
preferences and external tools that were associated with the previous release of CNUT into the
CNUT 3.20.7 installation.

Operators who are still running CNUT 1.0 should uninstall

it before installing CNUT 3.20.7.

Full details about CNUT 3.20.7 installation are provided in the Installation section of the CNUT 3.20.7
Help File.

Launching Installation or Upgrade on Windows

To run the installation on any supported Windows platform, download the file
setupCNUT_3_20_7.exe to your local computer and double-click on it to execute it.

Launching Installation or Upgrade on Redhat Linux

To run the installation on any supported Linux platform, download the file setupCNUT_3_20_7.bin.
Before running the installer in Linux, change the permissions on the downloaded setup file by
executing the following command:

chmod +x setupCNUT_3_20_7.bin

Then, to run the installer, execute the following command:

setupCNUT_3_20_7.bin –i console
