1. Review: Effects of Overpopulation to the Ecosystem
2. Review Drill
3. Science Trivia: More than 200 babies are born every minute all over the world. In
2009, the world population is about 6.7 billion and predicted to be 7.8 billion by
2050.
B. Developmental Activities
1. Motivation: Show a picture of dynamite fishing.
2. Presentation
Let the pupils describe and tell something about the picture. Let them come up
with the problem, What other destructive practices of man affects the
interrelationship in an ecosystem?
3. Activity/Discussion
Procedure
1. With your group mates list down at least five destructive practices of man.
2. Explain how these practices disturb the interrelationship of organisms in an
ecosystem.
3. Outputs of each group will be discussed in class.
4. Generalization
Activities of too many people to achieve progress and their efforts to overcome
the effects of overpopulation have led to the destruction of the environment.
Destructive practices of man
1. Kaingin system is clearing the forest by cutting down trees or burning the area
to cultivate crops
and build homestead. Effects: Plants die and the habitat of animals are
destroyed. Natural
cycles in the place are disturb. The poisonous gases from the burning plants
cause air pollution.
2. Dynamite and cyanide fishing using explosives and poisonous chemicals to
catch fish.
Effects: the waters of the sea are contaminated with harmful chemicals
resulting to water
pollution and death of marine life.
3. Muro-ami fishing children use stones to strike corals in the sea to bring fishes
to big nets
Effects: destruction of corals which is the breeding place for aquatic animals
like fishes.
4. Improper waste disposal throwing waste materials to the environment
Effects: causes water, land and air pollution
disturb the natural cycles in an ecosystem due to their harmful
effects
5. Deforestation cutting down trees

Effects: causes landslides, massive floodings, destruction of the forest, death

of wildlife
6. Agricultural lands and hills converted to subdivisions
Effects: landslides, massive floodings, lack of food production
7. Mining getting minerals from underneath the earth
Effects: landslides, contamination of soil and water with poisonous chemicals
used in mining.
8. Intensive farming overusing pesticides and artificial fertilizers
Effects: soil pollution, soil infertility

5. Application
In your notebook, draw one destructive practice of man and explain how it
disturbs an ecosystem
6. Evaluation
Describe how the following activities of man destroy the environment
a. Building factories that emit poisonous gas in the atmosphere
b. Illegal logging
c. Too many people living on river banks
d. Too much use of fertilizer in the soil to increase rice yield
e. Throwing garbage in canals

A natural calamity arises from natural causes. Examples are typhoons,

event.
