JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Scope
Provide counselling services for students with personal, family, social, academic,
behavioral concerns
Consult and work with parents, teachers, coordinators and principal how best serve the
developmental, emotional, and educational interests of the child
Compile studies on student achievement through the internal and external assessment
data
Develop a career exploration programme
Service to students:
Meet with students individually, in small groups or with entire classes as necessary
Provide individual counselling regarding personal, academic or behavioural issues
Structure group counselling opportunities in the areas of career exploration, university
guidance, test preparation, test interpretation, course selection and goal setting
Conduct guidance and counselling activities through interactions with classes of
students
Help students to understand and to accept themselves
Increase students levels of responsibility
Help students develop realistic personal growth, academic, and career options
Help students understand their abilities, interests, talents, and personality
characteristics; provide them with life skills to enhance personal, social, and academic
growth
Provide a safe and comfortable place where students may come talk to the counsellor

about a problem, consult on a specific topic or simply read a book/magazine. This

includes trying to change any elements of the school atmosphere that might negatively
affect their academic development
Consult with teachers when appropriate
Develop and implement special programmes such as transitions in/out of RIS or
between levels (i.e. Primary to Secondary)
Provide every opportunity for positive reinforcement both in private sessions
Be sensitive to a multiple cultural diverse student body
Help students develop good study habits
Assist and facilitate admissions, screening test and orientation process of new students
and families
Participate in process of placing students in classes (as well as discussions regarding
promotion and retention)
Oversee standardised testing and assessment programmes
Schedule and follow-up on all new students throughout the year
Provide a referral list of professionals for community and outside school community
resources and services: testing, medical, psychological, tutorial, etc.
Assist with Secondary School class schedules and be responsible for appropriate
scheduling of students
Services to Parents:
Provide guidance, support and orientation for new RIS families
Confer with parents, students or teachers regarding individual student progress and
needs Additional services
Edit with teachers the year class lists
Establish good rapport with the community by explaining the importance of
guidance and counselling to the various consumers of guidance services including
students, parents, teachers, school leadership team, and members of the community
Build relationship with students, staff and families and ensuring confidentiality in all
personal matters
Ensure that student records and cumulative folders are stored in a safe and confidential
manner
Qualifications
Professional certification in counselling (or equivalent), Bachelors Degree (or
equivalent)
Previous counselling experience
A strong interest to help others and the ability to inspire respect, trust and confident
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
