ITS THE
END OF THE
WORLD AS
WE KNOW IT

As we were working on this issue, we noticed a distinct apocalyptic

theme developing, from our doomsday guide Surviving the Holidays
to our sit-down with Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick. Then theres
our feature on Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer, who goes
full dystopia in the final installment of The Hunger Games.
Our own personal prepper survival kit would be fully stocked
with plenty of good beer and food. If you havent noticed, were big
foodies here, so we were fascinated to learn more about a subculture
thats developing in cities like Philly, Portland, and everywhere in
between. Read about it in the story Cheese Heads on page 100.
As 2014 comes to a close, were happy to usher in the New Year
with our old friend Lil Wayne. We spent a few days with him at his
skate park and mansion in Miami talking about everything from jail to
success and the rebirth of Tha Carter. We always have a great time
with Weezy, who doesnt do anything small (he rolled up to our shoot
in a Bentley, full entourage in tow, including two personal groomers).
Meanwhile were going through a bit of a rebirth ourselves. Well
be introducing cool new features in the magazine in the coming months,
plus relaunching our website and unveiling our NYLON Guys Shop.
Its gonna be a whole new world.

Brook Power is a Southern California

fixture straight out of the pages of Thomas
Pynchons surf-noir novel Inherent Vice.
At 28 years old, she regularly charges
(her word, spoken with a locals-only patois)
at El Porto, one of the beaches namechecked in the book. Although she
originally planned on becoming a painter,
like her father, and attended art school in
pursuit of those talents, Power makes her
living as a model (she just returned from
shoots in the Caribbean, Seattle, and
Boston). When her schedule permits, she
still creates psychedelic photo collages
from 60s fashion spreads and details
pulled from Charles Manson-era Topanga
Canyon. I was born in Inglewood, and then
the Rodney King riots happened, the
Northridge earthquake happened, a bunch
of fires.... My dad was a surfer. He grew
up in Dogtown, in Playa del Rey, so he
was like, Were getting out of here. When
I was four or five, we moved to North Shore
on Oahu, says Power, speaking over
the phone from a ranch on the edge of
Los Padres National Forest in Ventura,
California. Shes there visiting a dear friend,
her horse, whom she affectionately calls
Pomp. P-O-M-P. We couldnt think of a
name for him, and I was reading this
biography of Sacagawea at the time, and
her babys name was Pomp. Power, who
is part Chippewa, continues, Sacagawea
is a rad chick, by the way. Lewis and Clark
wouldnt have made it without her. She
deserves a lot of credit. Brook Power is,
undeniably, a rad chick, tooone whose
chronic wanderlust has led to more than
her fair share of new-roomie situations
all over the world, though never far from
the ocean. For anyone looking to live
with Power, here is a cheat sheet with
her must-ask interview questions.

DO YOU LIKE SEINFELD?

If yes, and only yes,
you can continue
the interview.
DO YOU USE BATH SALTS,
IN THAT OTHER WAY? This
time, if the answer is
yes, just dont continue.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO
SHARE YOUR NACHOS?
Yes? Youre stoked.
HERES A CRITICAL ONE
IT WILL REALLY TELL YOU
ABOUT THEIR MORAL FIBER.
DO YOU LIKE SADE? If no,
you might want to bail

right away, but still

check to see what kinds
of music they are cool
with. If yes, you might
have just found a good
human to sleep next to.
IF YOU WERE TO WALK INTO
YOUR ROOM AND FIND
A BABY PYGMY GOAT WITH
LITTLE HORNS DOING TINY
PARKOUR MOVES ALL OVER
YOUR BED, AND YOU KNEW
I WAS THE ONE WHO
INVITED HIM IN, HOW
WOULD YOU REACT? If
the answer is awwww,
then just take my keys.

GAME ON:
BY MATT DOLBY

SUPER SMASH BROS.

DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION

BLOODBORNE

Nintendo has been struggling to bring

new gamers into the Wii U fold since
its release, but with Super Smash
Bros., which has built a mammoth cult
following since its original release
on Nintendo 64 in 1999, the system
finally has a chance to win over
the holdouts. Combining its familiar
over-the-top melee-style fighting
platform with new functions like
eight-player local battle mode,
the franchise projects a fresh feel,
making the game a must-buy for both
fighting fans and retro-Nintendo
die-hards. Amiibocollectible figures
that can be paired with the Wii U
controlleradd specialty moves to
corresponding characters fighting
abilities. The eight-player battle
mode creates choreographed mayhem
between all your favorite vintage
characters. No other game brings
out that nostalgia more than Super
Smash Bros., so strap in for
a chaotic trip down memory lane.
AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 21, 2014,
FOR WII U.

Inquisition, the third installment

of the Dragon Age series, is a makeit-or-break-it game for developers
at BioWare. Dragon Age II, by most
accounts, was a disappointmenta
dagger in the heart of the fickle
gaming community. Taking that to
heart, the company has positively
upped their game with Inquisition.
All the familiar storytelling depth
that defines BioWare is paired with
a new RPG engineborrowed,
admittedly, from games like Skyrim
and Assassins Creedwhich mixes both
tactical and real-time action in an
open-world setting. Swords, sorcery,
and all the familiar tropes in the
game are delivered untouched and
still rich. So if youre on the
fence, imagine the satisfaction
of cutting out a dragons feet
from underneath him, then sidling
up to his throat and finishing him
off. Its exhilarating, trust me.
AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 18, 2014,
FOR PC, PS3/4, AND XBOX 360/ONE.

Bloodborne is a game filled with

dread, a heavy weight that smothers
you immediately and only gets harder,
darker, and bloodier as you play.
Putting down the controller, however,
would be a mistake, because behind
the brooding faade is an amazingly
detailed and beautiful game. A dark,
gothic RPG that is packed full
of the atmosphere and difficulty
that fans of Dark and Demons Souls
love to hate, Bloodborne never
crosses into survival horror,
but it packs scares that would
impress any Resident Evil fan.
The mechanics are a fine balance
between knowing when to fight
and when to avoid, though running
blindly in with sword swinging
will leave you crestfallen,
desperate for a re-spawn.
AVAILABLE MARCH 2015 FOR PS4.

IN TAHIR HEMPHILLS DATA-DRIVEN WORLD,

LYRICS ARE THE CLUES, COORDINATES, AND
CURRICULUM FOR STUDENTS AT HIS RAP
RESEARCH LAB. BY VINSON CUNNINGHAM.
PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRAD OGBONNA

Everything comes out of my head,

says Tahir Hemphill as he settles into
a diner booth in the Bronx, where he
lives, and the tight loops of his lightly
salted Afro reach ceilingward as
if to demonstrate the height of his
ambitions. The everything in question
is Hemphills Rap Research Lab.
The Lab, which recently graduated its first
class, allows its teenage students to conduct
research using Hemphills masterpiece, his
Sistine Chapel: The Hip-Hop Word Count.
The rap almanac contains lyrics from more
than 50,000 rap songs, and is equipped
with an increasingly sophisticated analytic
framework for parsing it all. Its like Voltron,

For Hemphill, who moonlights
as an advertising creative, the
database has been his muse and
raison dtre for the past halfdecade. It provides the statistical
backbone from which Hemphill
designs vivid, often beautiful
charts and graphs to present new
findings. In one, named Picasso,
Baby, colorful points are linked
up to resemble a nervous system,
representing the connection between
rappers and the fine artists referenced
in their songs.
With help from The Hip-Hop Word
Count, and under Hemphills watchful eye,
the Labs students performed close readings
of the F-word in N.W.A songs, mapped
violent lyrics against crime stats (turns out
theres no correlation), and tried to settle
that perennial question: Whos the most

estimation: Its about data mining and cultural researchbut
also media criticism and developing critical intelligence, he
says. For them to be able to be more critical of any media
that they come in contact with, to me, is the win.
Hemphill insists, however, that his rap almanac isnt meant
as a defense of hip-hop. I dont think hip-hop needs any defense,
he says, laughing but dead serious. Its the most powerful youth
art form in the world, period. And its been around for over 40
years. Hip-hop has already raised a few generations of people.
He should know, it practically raised him. I mean, it was
a pedagogical tool for my life, he says. Some specific hip-hop
lyricstheyre scripture. For me and my friends, we use them,
in some ways, as a blueprint.
The culture followed Hemphill everywhere. After attending
high school at NYCs Brooklyn Tech, he moved south to Atlantas
Morehouse College, where he ended up as part of a collective
founded by, among others, Saul Williams, a singer, actor, poet,
and general hip-hop pioneer. (Williams recently starred in
the Tupac-inspired Broadway play Holler If Ya Hear Me.)
Together, they hosted some of India Aries first public gigs.
That lets-put-on-a-show ethos keeps paying off: When
he learned that the Andrew Freedman Complexnamed after
the Bronx cultural icon and home to Hemphills studiorequired
resident artists to craft a community engagement project,
the former Harvard fellow figured it was finally time to start
his own school. It was a huge challenge, says Hemphill. But
its something that needed to happenI needed to do something
to impress my project on the world.
Hemphills next move is twofold: first, unleash The Hip-Hop
Word Count to the public, through an open search tool. Its going
to empower artists and academics and rap geeks and journalists,
he says. Then, hell make some hires, build a creative studio
get some of that everything out of his head and into ours.

HOW TO BUILD
A NERD EMPIRE

BETWEEN NERDIST, TALKING DEAD, AND @MIDNIGHT,

CHRIS HARDWICKS CAREER IS MORE ALIVE THAN EVER.
BY NATASHA VARGAS-COOPER. PHOTOGRAPHED BY STEVE TAYLOR

YOU GREW UP IN KENTUCKY, AND YOUR DAD WAS

A PROFESSIONAL BOWLER. DID THIS MAKE YOU
MORE OR LESS OF A NERD? My whole life existed
around a bowling center. Thats where I went
every day after school. Thats where I first
started playing video games in an arcade,
and chess with other kids whose parents bowled.
There was a big-screen TV that played MTV
and I would watch that for hours. But no,
it definitely did not make me cool.
WHATS THE BEST THING ABOUT POP CULTURE RIGHT
NOW? Theres a pop culture renaissance because
we have so many different access points. Attention
is the new economy. Theres competition for your
attention, and competition breeds quality. Thats
part of the currency of how we live our lives: Our
attention is as important as money. Before, you
had three channels and it was like, What else

shirt by lacoste, jeans by acne, belt by gap. stylist: kit scarbo. grooming: sean james.

For those weaned on MTV in the 90s,

Chris Hardwick was Jenny McCarthys
sardonic, floppy-haired co-host on the
dating show Singled Out. Hardwick
stood out as the reluctant smart-ass
who looked like he wanted to be
anywhere else but yukking it up with
peacocking show contestants (its no
wonder, given his main interests were
video games, Steve Martin, and German
existential philosophy). After some bleak
years, Hardwick has reinvented himself
as an entrepreneur and ber-pop-culture
enthusiast who now hosts multiple
hit shows based on his three loves:
comedy, technology, and unabashed
nerd stuff. Hardwicks Internet media
company, Nerdist, boasts 2.5 million
unique hits monthly, while some seven
million tune into Talking Dead, which is
like SportsCenter for Walking Dead fans,
and his game show on Comedy
Central, @midnight, was just renewed
fora second season. We sat down
with Hardwick in between recording
shows at a Los Angeles soundstage
to talk about MTV, down-vote culture,
and skinny jeans.

are you going to watch, asshole? Technology has

flipped the model and made the content king
within an hour, a song, video, or picture can
be global. The middleman has been cut out
between creator and consumer. Its much more
a meritocracy: Were an up-vote culture now.
WHATS THE WORST THING ABOUT POP CULTURE NOW?
Were also a down-vote culture. Because we live
through machines were desensitized to negativity.
Weve also become whiny and overly cynical,
sometimes just waiting to trash stuff.
HOW DID YOU GET OUT OF YOUR CAREER RUT AFTER
LEAVING MTV IN 1990? At first, I was super-drunk,
chunky, unemployed, directionless, scared, and
depressed. Then I finally accepted that Im an
awkward nerd, also loud and obnoxious. I stopped
trying to chase what I thought the entertainment
business wanted me to be. It sounds simple, but
it wasnt for me. I decided in 2003 that I would

only go after things that I was passionate about.

I started doing tech and science journalism for
Wired magazine, did more stand-up comedy,
and created the Nerdist blog. Focusing on what
I loved was the key to everything.
ARE NERDS THE NEW ELITISTS? When you grow
up not being able to fit in, you can come out
of it very elitist, like, This is ours! Stay away!
Or you can come out of it like I did and think,
Everyone should like this stuff and its fun and
come on in! Now theres high-quality big-budget
stuff for us nerd folk and thats greatI think
everyone should celebrate the stuff they like the
way they want to. Some of the nerds see hipster
people spill into conventions, and they get freaked
out. Ive been accused of letting the hipsters in.
WHY? Maybe my haircut or the skinny
jeans. Probably the skinny jeans.

they would hurt themselves if they
drank a big, tannic, high-alcohol red
wine after a 10-hour shift. So using
the red grapes that they had in the

wines that were meant to be refreshing,
thirst-quenching, reinvigorating.
The bubbly version, which shares
these crisp characteristics, got some
help from well-known admirers such as
Roger Federer and Sir Mick Jagger.
There is a very big trend in American
sparkling wine as well, adds Xander
Oxman, CEO of Club W, an online
wine club. Weve had this explosion
of prosecco and cava out of Spain that
has made sparkling wine more
approachable, and created a lot of
growth in the category. Ros has
a pretty and subtle quality, kind of like
watermelon, peach, and cranberry.
Also, you can drink it for a day and
your hangover is minimal. According
to Wildy, sparkling wine also pairs very
well with food. If the meal has been
big and rich, and youve had a couple
of really monster red wines, you can
sense a little bit of fatigue, he says.
To have something that uplifting and

really eye-catching. With the holidays

MUSICIANS NATHAN WILLIAMS (A.K.A. WAVVES) AND KYLE THOMAS (A.K.A.
KING TUFF) SHARE A LOT IN COMMON: THE STONER-ROCK HEATHENS
BOTH HAVE SICK NEW MUSIC COMING OUT, AND SOME PRETTY TRIPPY
GROOMING ADVICE. BY JADE TAYLOR

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?

My bass player Stephen and
I recorded a Wavves album
with our friend Dylan from
Cloud Nothings. And were
finishing another Wavves
album. Both come out next
year.
SO YOURE WORKING ON TWO DIFFERENT
ALBUMS? Yeah. But they sound
a lot different. The Wavves
and Cloud Nothings record
was recorded at my house
while the Wavves album
was recorded with a full
band in L.A. with legitimate

(grooming)

producers and engineers.

I also have a new project
called Spirit Club.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO
LATELY? This Young Thug,
Birdman, and Rich Homie
Quan mixtape; and a lot of
Devo for some reason.
WHAT IS YOUR GROOMING ROUTINE
LIKE? I dont wash my hair for
months at a time. I shower
when I sweat but other than
that, not too much. I dont
like to put product in my hair.
I never have. [Laughs] But I
do trim my beard.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BEARD ICONS?
Hulk Hogan, but he doesnt
really have a beard, he has

a handlebar mustache. I just

think anybody who bleaches
their facial hair is cool. And
Guy Fieri has good facial
hairhes kind of got some
bleach in there, too.
WHATS THE WORST HAIRCUT YOUVE
EVER HAD? I used to have this
weird asymmetrical, femaleelectro haircut, which is not
the best look. Then I had this
Prince Valiant cut with really
straight, short bangs and
then the rest of it was just
long, stringy hair. Ive had
a lot of bad haircuts. I have
one right now.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GROW OUT
YOUR FACIAL HAIR? I never used to
be able to grow it, I guess.
I dont know. It was kind of
just a lazy thing, realistically.
Once it started growing, I
was just like, Ugh, you have
to shave your face every day
with a razor. It just sucked.
Its so annoying.
DO YOU WEAR COLOGNE? Yeah. I
never used to but I have
one called Bleu de Chanel.
Sometimes I just spray it in
my house because it smells
that good.
WHATS THE CRAZIEST THING YOU AND
KYLE HAVE EVER DONE TOGETHER? Oh,
I cant tell you that. One
time, though, we went to
the Chateau Marmont, took
mushrooms, and went to a
strip club. It ended up being
really scary and not the best
idea. Do not go to a strip
club on mushrooms.
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAY ABOUT KYLE?
I dont know why they call
him king. He only ruled
over Magic Jake [King
Tuffs bassist] and Gary
[drummer] isnt on Instagram.
His dinner-wear was
unimpressive and his
stench was foul like
the one rising from my
horse stable. [Laughs]

kyle thomas photographed by xenia rollinson.

SO YOU JUST CAME OUT WITH A NEW

ALBUM? Yes, my new album,
the Black Moon Spell.
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION? Hot
sex. [Laughs] Its heavier and
darker than my other stuff,
but its still fun and ridiculous.
DOES FACIAL HAIR AND MUSIC GO HAND
IN HAND? As far as rock goes, I
think hair has to be involved.
I dont trust guitar players
without long hair. I dont want
to see some guy up there
with a shaved head bouncing
his little cue ball around.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BEARD ICONS
IN MUSIC? Lee Scratch Perry
looks pretty good nowadays.
Not in music: Santa Claus
and David the Gnome.
WHAT IS YOUR BEARD PHILOSOPHY?
Every guy has a way he looks
the best. For some guys, its

clean-shaven; for me, I cant.

If I grow out my beard, its
mostly on the neck, and its
gnarly. I have to keep it in
this weird place between full
beard and two-day beard.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE
TOTALLY CLEAN-SHAVEN? Years ago.
When Im clean-shaven I
get that weird rubber face.
Some guys look good like
that but not me, I just turn
into a rubber head. Its nasty.
WHATS THE LONGEST YOUVE EVER GROWN
YOUR BEARD OUT TO? When Im old
Ill try and grow it longer. I
think most old men should
have a beard. Theres just
something about stroking it
that makes you feel great.
WHAT HAIR PRODUCTS DO YOU USE? I
steal my girlfriends fancy
stuff. And I like stuff by
Lush, especially that beer

shampoo Cynthia Sylvia

Stout. I like the crazy smell.
I want the most expensive
thing all the time.
WHATS THE MOST EXPENSIVE GROOMING
PRODUCT YOU OWN? I have a
golden toothbrush for my
gold tooth. I use a different
kind for my other teeth, but I
have a gold one for the gold.
WHATS THE KING TUFF BEAUTY SECRET?
Sleep until noon, do at
least three blood-curdling
screams upon rising.... Also:
I dont believe in deodorant.
The way you tell youre
attracted to someone is by
their scent, you know?
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAY
ABOUT NATHAN? Oh, my little
shit pipe. Hes a twinkling
gem of a flame atop a wellgroomed rock n roll candle.

KIND OF PANTRY:
MANTRY
Entrepreneur is a buzzword. Its like saying,
Im wearing clothes, quips Reggie
Milliganone half of the monthly food
subscription service Mantry. When he,
a former chef, and Tony Hancock, who has
a background in mechanical engineering
and coding, met in Toronto in 2012, the
Portland-via-Brooklyn artisanal food
movement was dawning. All of a sudden,
everybody started pickling, making mustard,
doing barbecue sauces, and hang-drying
salami. And we were like, A lot of
magazines will write 10 products to try.
Why dont we just ship to peoples doors
directly? reminisces Milligan. Hence the
name Mantry, a portmanteau based on
their catchy slogan, the modern mans
pantry. Each months crate features six fullsized, all-American items, handpicked by
the duo and united by an overarching
theme (past crates included the all-baconeverything Bacon Nation and the caloriecount and protein-obsessed Health Nut),
as well as a booklet that explains the
foods origin and suggests what to do with
it. We fly to Savannah, Nashville, Austin,
and we meet all these purveyors face to
PRINT IS NOT DEAD:

MOOD, AS IN
MUSIC AND FOOD
Its important to choose your priorities in life, and MOOD,
an independent music-and-food quarterly out of Brooklyn,
seems to have figured theirs out: At 96 beautiful matte pages,
the magazine candidly covers (the very important) matters of
ear, mouth, and heart through essays, Q&As with musicians
and chefs, and recipes. Were talking about stories like New
York Pizza Project, where they followed a group of guys working
on a citywide pizza anthology (who knew?), a musician-run caf
in Johannesburg, and portraits from the Illinois State Fair.

face. I think that translates to the box. We

also have a mental pantry of every one
of our subscribers. Every single month when
we decide what to put in were like, OK,
whens the last time we sent mustard? They
must be running out, says Hancock of their
selection process in a world where food
subscription services are a dime a dozen.
Having invested more than $500,000 in
small-maker food, Mantry is proud to pay
full prices, give exposure to local businesses,
and send sharable-sized nosh to their
devoted subscribers.
Although the endeavor is in its second
year and on its 28th crate, its not yet
completely devoid of the woes of your
average start-up: Only a week ago, Hancock
received a delivery of a thousand pounds
of broken crackers that arrived on the
sidewalk of their NYC headquarters instead
of their warehouse in Chicago. He had to
sit on them through the rain until the carrier
showed up 10 hours later. However, the pair
seem certain that its all well worth it as they
speak of Holy Smoke, a smoked olive oil out
of Charleston, South Carolina, their favorite
artisanal food item of the moment. When
people are not good at cooking, the food
movement can be really intimidating. And a
product like that, if you just get a local tomato,
slice it up, add a little salt and the smoked
olive oil on it, you can serve that at a dinner
party, and people will lose their minds, says
Milligan excitedly. You dont have to be this

IN WHICH WE TAKE STYLE NOTES FROM THE SARTORIALLY INCLINED IF NOT

PROFESSIONALLY FASHIONABLE. BY DAN FRAZIER. ILLUSTRATION BY KLANDO

Author Chuck Palahniuk may be best known for writing the rules of Fight Club, but 13 novels
and 18 years later hes still pushing the edge of contemporary fiction. His latest book, Beautiful
You, is set upon the invention of a consummate sex toy, which compels women to never
leave their bedrooms again. Palahniuk calls the book gonzo eroticaa blend of romance
novels, pulp porn, and chick lit. I tend to alternate between more or less extreme things,
says Palahniuk. But I wanted this one to be really over the top. And with a geriatric lesbian
sex scene, he just might have achieved his goal. But beneath his signature shock prose,
theres always a cultural discourse. When I see sex toys advertised on television, continues
Palahniuk, Im thinking: Is this making the
world a better place or a worse place? The
most intimate parts of our lives are now
becoming these salable commodities with
a guaranteed result that allow us to not
have to interact with another human
being. Here, he answers your most
burning questions about IRL fashion.

HEY CHUCK,
WHICH ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS
HAS THE BEST STYLE?
- BRANDON, ATLANTA, GA
Penelope Anne Harrigan from my
new book, Beautiful You, because
Penelope climbs to the top of
Mount Everest in a Donna Karan
pantsuit with a Prada suitcase
filled with Anne Klein separates
strapped to her back. None of my
other characters have done that.
CHUCK,
WHICH CHARACTERS STYLE IS
CLOSEST TO YOUR OWN?
- JACKSON, KNOXVILLE, TN
Tyler Durden. Because I still
remember being on location in
San Pedro when David Fincher
was making the movie [Fight Club]
and I was watching the wardrobe
mistress take everything Brad
Pitt was about to wear and drag
it through the dirt on the side
of the road. Then she stomped
on it, threw it back into the
dirt, and shook it out. Then
Brad Pitt put it on.
AS A MAN WHO WEARS THEM
WELL, ARE THERE GOOD AND BAD
TURTLENECKS, OR IS IT JUST A
CASE OF, IF YOURE COOL YOULL
PULL IT OFF, AND IF YOURE LAME
THEN YOU LOOK LIKE A BUMMER?
- TYLER, CHICAGO, IL
You look either like a Tom
of Finland character or a classic
photo of Ernest Hemingway.

The goal is that the turtleneck should

be tapered tight all the way down your
torso. A good turtleneck makes your
waist and neck look approximately
the same circumference.
YO CHUCK,
YOUVE ROCKED A GOATEE. YOUVE
ROCKED MUTTONCHOPS. ANY REGRETS?
- JOSH, LOS ANGELES, CA
In the 1970s, when I was a teenager,
there was this product called Sun-In. It
was an aerosol spray. The products slogan
was Sun-In and sunlight, and youll be
blonder tonight. My siblings and I all used
big spray bottles of Sun-In every morning
before going to school. And it got so
bad that we all had orange Oompa Loompa
hair and the wallpaper in our shared
family bathroom was destroyed by this
constant spray of hydrogen peroxide.
CHUCK!
I JUST GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY
OF OREGON! WHAT KIND OF THREADS WERE
YOU WEARING THERE BACK IN THE 80S?
- COLIN, PORTLAND, OR
Fake Vuarnet sunglasses, because
everyone wanted to look like Tom Cruise
in Risky Business. And a thousand different
pastel shades of tank tops. The difference
between a formal tank topwhich you
could wear to a wedding or funeral
was that it covered both of your nipples.
Most days you just wore a regular tank
top, which had very thin stretched-out
straps that were meant to show off as
much of your pectoral development
as possible. And cargo shortsbut you
only needed one pair of those.
WHY DO SO MANY STYLISH WRITERS
LOOK LIKE DICK TRACY (TOM WOLFE, GAY
TALESE, WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS)? WHATS
THE SECRET TO DRESSING WELL, WITHOUT
LOOKING LIKE A FANCY COP?
- RICHARD, PARAMUS, NJ
That tailored, tatted, dressy look
is compensation for the fact that theyve
never been in a weight room and that
they have tiny, skinny upper bodies.
Or theyre junkies like Burroughs.
WHAT CLOTHES DO YOU WRITE IN? I TYPE
IN THE NUDE, BUT I DO TRANSCRIPTION.
- MATT, DURHAM, NC
I write in the clothes that I still love
too much to throw away but are so
threadbare and full of holes that I cant
wear them in public. Mostly those tank
tops from the 80s.

DIRECTOR AND PHOTOGRAPHER NABIL HAS SEEN SOME REALLY GOOD DAYS. FEELS LIKE
THERE ARE EVEN BETTER ONES AHEAD. BY BUSRA ERKARA. PHOTOGRAPHED BY NATHANIEL WOOD

Its one thing to collaborate with talents like Kanye West or FKA
Twigs; its quite another to say youve added value to their work.
That designation sits comfortably on 32-year-old director and
photographer Nabils shoulders, who made waves after directing
videos for Wests Paranoid and Frank Oceans Pyramids and
Swim Good. Nabils credits have grown to include Twigss Two
Weeks and Bon Ivers Towers and Holocene. West remains
a friend whom he often works withother than videos, they
produced the Rizzoli monograph Glow in the Dark together, and
Nabil shot his wedding with Kim Kardashian in France last spring.

NYLONGUYSMAG.COM

Growing up in a small coastal

town in Australia, Nabil spent a lot
of time on the beach swimming,
surfingand laterskating. All
my friends were skaters, and
we all listened to Wu-Tang, he
remembers. My friend Shannon
would be Ghostface, and Scott
would always do Method Man.
I wouldnt do any of them cause
I didnt dare try to rap to Wu-Tang.
So last fall when Nabil got to use
the Wus album Once Upon a
Time in Shaolin (there is only one

copy in existence) as a prop

in his music video for Skrillexs
Fuck That, it must have felt like
things had come full circle. To Nabil,
who acknowledges his own talent
but remains extremely humble
in the face of it, it was more
of a good blessing.
Nabils move from photography
to video came organically. It was
just being on sets with Kanye, taking
photos, surfing, travelingbeing
around it, he recalls. I got the vibe
of itjust in love with the music and
the energy. When I got the chance,
I didnt suck, so that helped. His
formal education consists of a
couple of semesters at a community
college in Chicagoeverything
else came from self-education
and working for other talented
artists. I cant believe people get
away for four years of their lives
to be sculpted into something,
he asserts. Save $45,000, put it
toward your equipment or your own
personal project. Just go see the
world and shoot thingsthats the
best learning. To this day, when
he listens to a song and doesnt
immediately think of an idea that he
likes (which is usually the case) he
drives somewhere and listens to the
track over and over until it hits him.
Lately, Nabil seems to be at
another turning point in his career
one that would steer him in the
direction of full-length feature films
and considering the many great
directors with backgrounds in music
videos (David Fincher and Spike
Jonze to name a couple)it shouldnt
come as a big surprise. Currently,
he is working on the remaining parts
of his highly cinematic Beats by Dre
series, a short film titled Capture
Land on Nelson Mandelas life, and
a small dramatic thriller that he cant
disclose details about just yet. No
matter what direction he is headed
in, his philosophy remains the same:
I have an understanding of how
small we are in this world, and how
small our worlds really are, he says.
But we can really affect others
through telling stories that can
transcend and inspire. Just connect
people together. Thats my goal.

MY SNEAKER DREAMS COME TRUE AT CREATIVE RECREATION. BY MITSU TSUCHIYA

A few months ago, my friend Patrick Buchanan, the marketing

manager for Creative Recreation, pitched me the idea of designing
a sneaker for NYLON Guys. I blurted out, Really? It was such a
cool ideahow could I say no? (I later learned theyve only done
a few collabs, including Jared Leto and Barneys New Yorknot
bad company to be in.) So we picked a date for me to fly to their
HQ in L.A., and I started thinking about my soon-to-be sneakers.
The morning after I landed,
I arrived at their officeon the
18th floor of a building on Wilshire
Boulevardto meet Pierce Lopatic
and Jordan Anderson from the
brands design team to review
silhouettes and material. Im not
going to lieeven though Im an
editor, I was nervous about how
they would react to my ideas.
I sat down with Lopatic and
Anderson to walk them through a
mood board on my iPad. I wanted
to design something fun and
unique. And I knew that the color
choice would make a huge impact,
so I came up with a solid yellow
high-top. Yellow is unexpected,
and its also a color we use in the
magazine a lot. Plus, bottom line:
When was the last time you saw a
pair of solid yellow high-tops?
I explained to the guys that I
envision these as real statement
sneakers. Every day, I see more
and more men dressing in

monochromatic palettes.
With head-to-toe black or
gray or white becoming such
a big trend, the focus can
shift to stand-out footwear.
I waited a few seconds for
their response. Lopatic and
Anderson said they were
expecting me to bring almost
too many ideas, so they were
into my clear, singular vision!
Considering my concept
involved a solid color, they
suggested I play with trim.
Anderson brought me into

a closet where he kept thousands

of trimming samples. Flipping
through each swatch to pick the
right material can definitely be
overwhelming, but he pointed out
sections I should focus on, which
helped. Meanwhile, as I made
each selection, Lopatic showed
me a mock-up of the design on
a computer screen, so it made
it easier for me to visualize.
Since the design is simple, my
goal was to make the shoe look
expensive. I ended up choosing
a rich suede as a base fabric,
then added a piece of nylon on
the back to make it more unique

and interesting. I liked the look,

but also wanted to play with the
concept of nylonits subtle
but still adds an extra twist.
Then I kept the sole in white,
and added a NYLON logo
on the back of it.
As we finalized the design
process, the companys
co-founder Rich Cofinco joined
us to finish it up. I nervously
presented my shoe to him
again, and he loved it.
Phewmission accomplished.
The NYLON Guys x Creative
Recreation Sneaker will be
sold soon on shop.nylon.com.

my father told me when I was older, says Song. That nurses last name was Feldton. After finding thatout,
I decided to dedicate a line to workers all around the world. Song has produced a collection of deceptively
unflashy clothes and accessoriesthink denim button-downs, three-piece railroad-striped suits, and a terrific

the collections standout works: Its reconstructed with American workwear details, such as a shank button

the collection. To design workwear, one must payattention to the details that are in each piece, he says.
The details in American workwear all have their own functionanything from a pen pocket to adiamondshaped gusset under the crotch. All of them together build a successful workweargarment. Song honed
his skills designing outerwear at brands like Andrew Marc and London Fog before setting off on his own

Q&A:

HOW TO
GET RICH
ON INSTAGRAM

Mens fashion blogger

Adam Gallagher just
hit a million followers
on Instagram, and
that number is rising
steadily. Until now,
the million mark in
America had been
reserved for females
only, but something
about Gallaghers style
speaks fluently to the
male masses. We
chatted with Gallagher,
who goes by @iamgalla
online, to find out what
makes him a cut above.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED

IN ALL THIS? Well, I was
17, and I had just
graduated high school.
I received the award for
best dressed my senior
year, so I kind of felt like
I had some obligation
to continue fashion,
whatever that may be.
And in Southern
California, there werent
many options. So naturally
I took to the Internet,
and I started my blog.

WHEN DID THINGS BEGIN

TO TAKE OFF? It only took
around one year before
I saw about 40,000
followers on a website

called lookbook.nu.
I wasnt getting paid
at all, I was just doing
it for fun and I enjoyed
the engagement from
the readers. And then,
I would say the third year,
I started receiving emails
to pay me 50 bucks
a hundred bucks
whatever it was. And
yeah, slowly but surely
my hobby became
my business.

WHY IS THERE SUCH

A DISCONNECT BETWEEN
THE POPULARITY OF FEMALE
BLOGGERS AND MALE
BLOGGERS? Men are not
at the numbers that the
women are because,

mostly, theyre not good.

To be honest. And the
reason for that is half not
their fault, half their fault.
Its because the mens
industry is growing again.
Back in the 20s and 30s
it was very trendy to be
suited all the time, and
look very dapper. But there
was that 50- or 60-year
gap where it just wasnt
a thing to be stylish and
to wear trends. So I think
its back on the upswing
and I definitely think that
the digital market is
growing for men, whether
that be online shopping
or reading mens-wear
blogs online. MS

AEROSYN-LEX MESTROVIC MAKES THE OLD
NEW AGAIN. BY EMILY MCDERMOTT.
PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRAD OGBONNA

Despite being categorized as calligraphyan age-old,

meticulously detailed East Asian art formAerosynLex Mestrovics work is less traditional than it is
innovative and collaborative. Each of his paintings
is rendered by hand, and although some resemble
ancient Japanese scrolls, others are modern
and abstract. The Argentine artist, who has also
recorded and presented his process through
video and installation, creates personal artworks,
while simultaneously partnering with notable
names like Kanye West, Nike, and Kenzo.
At the core of what I do is communication and
language, explains Mestrovic. Whether its for me
or a client or collaboration, its creative and visual
problem-solving, helping to express something new.
Back in May of 2014, Mestrovics large-scale
calligraphy covered the walls of the Tribeca Grand
Hotel in downtown Manhattan. Sitting in the hotels
restaurant, he ordered a decaf cappuccino, and let
his dark eyes scan the scene, acting as though the
art wasnt his. In spite of his success staring him
in the face, his actions mimicked his humble
upbringing, which brought his family from Argentina
to Florida when he was four years old.
It wasnt easy for us. says Mestrovic when we
meet nearly six months later. My dad sacrificed a lot.
Within that short time, Mestrovics body of work
Live Paintings had been exhibited at the Museum
of Modern Art in New York City and he debuted
two major collaborations: one with the CFDA
to design all of the artwork for their annual Fashion
Awards and another that was a capsule collection
for Public School. Despite graduating from Pratt
Institute with a dual degree in fashion design
and communications, this range of clothing, which
was shown during spring 15 New York Fashion
Week and will hit stores in February 2015, brought
his paintings onto garments for the first time.
I think you can create a product or something
that somebody will live with or wear and thats
every bit as artistic as a painting on a wall, says
Mestrovic. I feel fortunate that Im able to work
artistically, even though a lot of the work I do,
the collaborations, are commercial.

NYLONGUYSMAG.COM

Fast forward one month, and Mestrovics eyes brighten

at the thought of his multiple projects that will debut during
the first week of December at Art Basel Miami Beach and its
affiliates, including collaborations with VH1, SCOPE Art Fair,
and Absolut Elyx. Never stopping, Mestrovic will move quickly
into the New Year, working with Tranoone of Europes
most renowned fashion trade shows. He relishes each new
opportunityafter all, to Mestrovic, art is art. Whether its staring
at a blank canvas or a blank screen, its very much the same,
he says. The idea of visual communication is so transcendent.

character
development

For Listen Up Philip, released in October to rave reviews,

writer-director Alex Ross Perry decided to make a real
dick out of Jason Schwartzman. Philip, Schwartzmans
character, is an egocentric novelist whos bored by his own
fecklessness. Superficially, Perrys characters (New York
intellectuals, mostly) resemble those of famous directors
like Woody Allen, Noah Baumbach, or Wes Anderson, but
Perrys subjects are a little more cutting, a little less romantic,
and profoundly alone. Perry offers viewers an out, though,
in the form of Philips cruelly deserted girlfriend, Ashley,
played by Elisabeth Moss, who counters Schwartzmans
indecency with a level of grace and perceivable growth.
Perry will once again team up with Moss for Queen of
Earth, out next near, and he spoke to us while making
some last-minute edits. MICKEY STANLEY

alex ross perry llustrated by ollanski.

Are you surprised, based on how insidious Schwartzmans

character can be, that people have responded so well to the
film? I dont really care that people empathize with him or
find him to be relatable, or they think, Thats me. But if
theyre just interested in him, then they realize that theyve
had a lot of the same questions about that personality
[type] that I myself was asking when I was writing it.
Thats the best-case scenario.

BOOK CLUB:

Was it after working with Elisabeth Moss on Listen Up

Philip that you decided to team up again for Queen of Earth?
Im happier with repeat collaborators because I like having
that shorthand and having that sort of base. Were proud
of the work weve done together and were willing to come
and do another project. So its just [when she said] shed
make another movie with me, shes aligning herself with all
the other collaborators in my little family of rejects who have
fun making these movies together. Now shes part of that.
Who are your influences? One of my favorite directors and
real heroes is Paul Schrader. A lot of people dont think about
him as one of the greats. I think his work is pretty incredible
and has that same spirit of no ending, like with Taxi Driver and
Raging Bull and Hardcore. I really like his theoretical embrace
of this sense of lonelinessthis kind of an interrupting thing.

WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE...

Gore Vidal was the original reality star: The novelist was perhaps better known
for his clashes with notables like Norman Mailer and Truman Capote than for his
considerable talents. Michael Mewshaws memoir Sympathy for the Devil: Four
Decades of Friendship With Gore Vidal attempts to tip that balance, recounting
Vidals variations from type, including a quiet penchant for loyalty and generosity.
Like any good literary reminiscence, Sympathy runs on name-drops: cameos from
the likes of Gay Talese and, weirdly, Andy Garcia, abound. Despite a few overly lyrical
descriptions (a slim 190 pages feels like a lot by the end), Sympathy is a worthy portrait
of a once-in-a-generation wits somewhat tragic latter years. VINSON CUNNINGHAM

THE LP 610-4 HURACN IS

ELEVATING LAMBORGHINI INTO
THE NEXT LEVEL OF SUPERCAR
HOLINESS. COMPETITORS
EVERYWHERE, BE VERY AFRAID.

SOME CODDLE YOU WITH LEATHER CULLED FROM THE SOFTEST COW BUM.
WHILE STILL OTHERS OFFER SUCH A SUPERLATIVE LEVEL OF NERD-CRUNCHING
ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY THAT YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THE ALGORITHMS
EXPAND OUT FROM THE WINDSHIELD A BEAUTIFUL MIND-STYLE.

PHOTOGRAPHED BY NICOLAS STECHER.

And then theres the Lamborghini LP

610-4 Huracn. One of the rare mechanical
hat tricks that accomplishes all of the above.
To put the LP 610-4 Huracn into context,
consider the car it replaces. The Gallardo
is not only the most successful charging bull
ever, it has also outsold all other Lamborghinis
combined. After Audis purchase of the
storied marque in 1998, the Gallardo
single-handedly elevated the once
financially troubled brand into solvency.
Sure, Lamborghinis place in the Supercar
Pantheon was already entrenched thanks
to the Miura, the model that started it
all. Then there were poster-fodder dream
machines with names like Countach, Diablo,
and Murcilago. But the Gallardo, thats
the founding stone on which the current
House of Lamborghini was built.
Things arent getting any easier in the
world of supercars, not for those trying to
break their way into the lucrative market, and
not for those trying to stay afloat. Never mind
the constant influx of niche auto builders
offering cars with ever more outlandish specs
and outrageous carbon-fiber bodywork.
Theres brutal competition already entrenched
in the form of the Ferrari 458 Italia (recently
updated in Speciale form) and the McLaren
650S, a just-released update on the MP412C that is one of the most immaculate
machines ever built. As De La Soul would
say, Stakes is high.
But oh, boy, has Lambo delivered on
their Gallardo follow-up. First off is the
design, imagined by Filippo Perinithe man
handpicked from Alfa Romeo after he helped
pen the stellar 8C Competizione. It is a rare

car that can absorb a brands DNA, digest

it within its own engineering framework,
and then manifest sheet metal that is
both authentic and yet evolutionary.
That is the Huracn.
So many of the new breed of one-off
wannabes bite Lamborghinis stylemore
so than any other manufacturerthat in some
ways the angular Lambo look has become
the de facto mid-engine supercar blueprint.
While theres no need to reinvent the wheel
(Lamborghini having invented that particular
wheel), there is a need to stay ahead of
the curve. The Huracn takes the highly
geometric, sharp-plane style of its big brother
Aventador and softens it in just the right
amount, in just the right places. You can
see where Perini took the fluid voluptuousness
of his Alfa Romeo 8C and spliced it into
Lamborghinis genome. Then he simplified
the Aventadors ferocious rear end; although
not as jaw-dropping, the minimalist approach,
LED linework, and quad-exhaust tips combine
to create one of the finest asses in the
automotive kingdom. All this, wrapped
around an advanced aluminum and
carbon-fiber-hybrid chassis.

Offering adaptive suspension and a double

clutch for the first time on any Lamborghini,
the Huracn is the one car out of SantAgata
you could actually use as a daily driver
without incurring chronic whiplash. Despite
its asphalt-scraping profile and race car
sheen, the LP 610-4 is incredibly easy to
drive. On Strada [Street] mode (adjusted
via the driving dynamic selector switch
on the steering wheel) the ride is astonishingly
comfortable, steering is light, shifts throughout
the seven-speed transmission are crisp,
and throttle delivery is smooth and
predictable. Given SantAgatas wellearned reputation for brutality, the Huracn
is a straight-up luxury saloon.
But dialed into Sport, or, Lord forbid,
Corsa [Track] mode, the LP 610-4 undergoes
a transformation. The suspension tightens,
shift points become more aggressive, and the
exhaust note turns into a whisper of the gods.
One of the last naturally aspirated supercars
left, the Huracns gorgeous 5.2 liter V10
offers power in ways that turbocharged
engines simply cannot. A 202-mph top
speed and 610-hp output may sell cars,
but you dont need to tease those thresholds
to experience exhilaration. On public roads,
this vehicle can overtake anyone, at any time,
at any instant. Envision being a quarter-mile
ahead, drop the hammer, and youre there.
Fifteen cars between you and open road?
A roar of the engine later and theyre
overtaken. Combine that with the Huracns
razor-blade handling, and theres nothing
for which youll be left wanting.
If Lamborghini made any miscalculation
at all, its in making the Huracn too good.
Who in their right mind would spend the extra
fortune on the Huracns more bloated, boorish,
inefficient sibling, the Aventador, when they
could have a machine thats superior in every
way, for $200,000 less? Yes, the Huracn will
secure a huge chunk of the supercar market
share, deservedly so, just as the Gallardo
did. And it needed to be this good to fend off
brilliant advances from the likes of McLaren
and Ferrari. But one of the victims whose
market share will likely be devoured most by the
Huracn might very well be the Aventador itself.

Smart design is often thought of as
analogous to beauty, but that is not always
the case. Sometimes, smart design is simply
the solution to a dilemma of greater complexity.
The recent explosion of 3-D printing, and
the subsequent slow devaluation of 3-D
printers, has galvanized a new era of
designers, creating an abundance
of DIY solutions to everyday needs.
Servers worldwide are filling up with 3-D
CAD blueprints for all sorts of never-beforeimagined printable items such as acoustic
guitars, weaving looms, reed instruments,
hand-cranked power generators, prosthetics,
medical/biological models, and even fully
functional automatic rifles. So you can blow
away a limb, and then print the replacement.
Brilliant. You can even print 3-D models of
your childrens doodles, if you so choose.
But while a flute, custom-sized screw,
or Ikea drawer track seem well within reason
for a printer to create, what about more
complex systems? What about, say, if
you need an actual automobile?
Print it, says Local Motors.
The Phoenix-based company has invented
the Strati, a vehicle you can print and purchase
for $18,000. Its fitting that Local Motors
are the inventors of the Strati, as they
achieved global recognition in 2007 when
they announced the worlds first opensource automobile, the Rally Fighter. Local
Motors crowd-sourced the entire vehicle,
allowing inventors worldwide to create and
contribute components for the stunning
off-road behemoth.
The Strati continues their mission
of creating low-volume, open-source
vehicles by being the first production
car you can actually print. The Strati is
created in three phases: 1) The Additive
Manufacturing phase, where they print
the car out, layering carbon-fiber-reinforced
ABS plastic (.16 inches tall by .3 inches
thick) for about 44 hours; 2) Subtractive
Manufacturing, where the car is transferred
to a 5-axis CNC router and milled to tolerance;
3) Rapid Assembly, where Local Motors plucks
all the components that cannot be printed
(e.g. tires, drivetrain, battery, motor, etc.)
from the adorable Renault Twizy and
transplants them onto the Strati.
The end result is a fully electric, zeroemission vehicle that offers a 62-mile range,
50-mph top speed, and 42 lb-ft of torque.
And the knowledge that you are a dude
who thinks way outside the box.

Wagener is personally responsible for ushering in the Tristars current age of designspearheaded by cars
like the CLA, CLS, and soon-to-be arriving GT. But this one, the S-Class Coupe, stands out.
I think this is the most beautiful car weve ever designed, he admits, finally, only after much needlingand several

Only this wasnt any ordinary compact sport

In a few hours the black strip of racetrack

Sure, the skeptic would argue the
experience was only set up for cheap thrills,
a jolt of endorphins to catalyze an otherwise
staid vehicle. But the S3 felt absolutely
organic in that high-pressure environment.
The suspension is off the charts;Audi was
so determined that the S3 be worthy of that
S badge that they tuned the suspension to

available, the only car in its segment to offer

But Audi has tuned the dampers so stiff in

might as well get the non-adaptive dampers
and save yourself $1,500.

Design-wise, the S3 is highly elegant with

sufficiently aggressive flourishes to separate
it from the more pedestrian A3. The S3
Singleframe grille is enlarged enough to show
it means business, without resorting to the
cartoonish dimensions of some other brands.
The double air intakes along the splitter make
the car look slightly menacing without coming
across as pretentious or overly styled. Its also

The 705-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system
pulsing from 14 speakers certainly doesnt hurt.
Although it is a beauty, the S3 is not made
for aesthetes wishing only to look the part.
Its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine

DISCUSS THEIR INSPIRATIONS, CREATIVE
PROCESS, AND THE CASIO G-SHOCK WATCH.

GA100CM-4A

HOW DID THE TWO

OF YOU FIRST MEET
AND DECIDE TO
FORM A BAND?
Rush: The music
community in Portland
is small, and Kyle and
I met at a Pretty Girls
Make Graves show.
Later we randomly
ended up living in the
basement of a flophouse
together in Colorado
I think we both paid
under $100 in rent.

A few days after he

moved in, we grabbed
some acoustic guitars
and started playing, and
it immediately clicked.
WHAT IS THE
CREATIVE PROCESS
LIKE FOR YOU?
Sears: The way we
work in the studio, from
an outside perspective,
would probably
seem schizophrenic.
Sometimes we run

around hooking up mics,

grabbing guitars and
random synthesizers,
and just jamming until
something happens.
Other times, we will
have lyrics and a solid
melody figured out
before we even jump in.
HOW WOULD
YOU DESCRIBE
YOUR SOUND?
Rush: Kyle and I have
been in bands since we

were both 12 years

old and we listened to
pretty much everything.
When making the
record, we didnt
go out of our way to
sound like anything
particular. We just
worked at it until it
sounded right to us.
WHERE DO
YOU DRAW
INSPIRATION?
Sears: It comes in

these crazy spurts.

I remember once being
really inspired by the
flicker of the television.
Our studio LOUDWAR
is also a really inspiring
place. Brandon and
I love to hide away
and bounce ideas off
each other.
Rush: I find a lot
of inspiration from
the combination of film
and soundtrack. Some
of the most powerful
music experiences
I have had have been
listening to music
combined with cinema.

KYLE
SEARS

GDX6900CM-8

WHAT HAS BEEN

ONE OF THE
MOST FORMATIVE
MOMENTS OF
YOUR CAREER?
Sears: We recently
played a show at the
Wiltern Theatre. It
was one of the first
times a mass amount
of people sang
along to our songs.

BRANDON
RUSH

WHATS NEXT
FOR THE BAND?
Sears: Well probably
be touring for the
album for the next
year and a half, or
two years. Brandon
and I are constantly
working on new
material as well.
WHAT DO YOU
DO IN YOUR
DOWN-TIME?
Rush: I really
like clothes
and scary movies.
Sears: I really
like comic books
and musicals.
WHATS
SOMETHING YOU
WISH YOU HAD
MORE TIME FOR?
Rush: Honestly, if I had
more time, I would love
to write film scores.
WHO ARE YOUR
STYLE ICONS?
Rush: Alexander
McQueen, David
Bowie, and
Leonard Cohen.
Sears: The Boss,
Elvis Costello.
WHY DO YOU
WEAR YOUR CASIO
G-SHOCK WATCH?
Rush: We can both
agree that the G-Shock
watch is a cool,
functional piece that
helps us stay on track
when were on tour.

SAVED BY TH
BELLE AND SEBASTIAN MIX THINGS
UP AND RETURN TO FORM ON THEIR
NINTH ALBUM. BY BARRY NICOLSON.
PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALEX DE MORA

Belle and Sebastian have always seemed to

exist in a state of suspended adolescence,
their songs a lushly realized soundtrack
to that turbulent, over-amplified period in
everyones life when each small victory
is a triumph and every minor defeat a
catastrophe. Little wonder, then, that theyve
become one of the worlds most beloved cult
bands. Frontman Stuart Murdoch may not
possess the same withering misanthropy as
his idol Morrissey, but in terms of the feverish
devotion his group inspires, hes one of very
few songwriters worthy of the comparison.
Musicians are like childrenwere all
Peter Pans! he exclaims as he takes his
seat at bandmate Sarah Martins kitchen
table for our interview. Yet few seem to
age so imperceptibly. Now 46 and a father
of one, he still speaks in the same lilting,
West-of-Scotland cadence he sings in,
and projects a boyish enthusiasm, which
appears at odds with his 18 years in
the music industry. Spry is a word that
carries slightly ageist connotations, but
for Murdoch, it feels entirely apt.
I was having an argument with [Rough
Trades] Geoff Travis about this, he says.
I think he was expecting me to grow old
gracefully, to write more mature songs.
Perhaps on this new record we have, but
its not a conscious thing. When you go into
the rehearsal room, its still one big chuckle.
That might be overstating it just a little.
Before starting work on Girls in Peacetime
Want to Dance (out January 20 on Matador),
the bands ninth LP and their first since
2010s Write About Love, Murdoch had
to complete the mammoth task of directing
his first feature film, God Help the Girl,
during which time hed shut himself off
from songwriting. Anxious about where
the songs were going to come from and
worried that the muse had deserted him, he
began working from a list of little concepts
hed compiledcreative exercises intended
to get the melodic juices flowing again.
We gave ourselves set ideas: Lets
try to write a song about a certain topic,
or certain people. I interviewed my friend

Josie Long, the comedian, hoping that

I could maybe write a song about her
adventures when she was younger. I did
the same with Hannah Murray, who was
one of the stars of God Help the Girl. It
didnt directly lead to any songs, but it was
just one of the experiments that we tried out.
Other prompts: We tried to imagine what
a failed Eurovision entry from Cyprus in 1974
would have sounded like, says Murdoch with
a laugh. The Everlasting Muse and Enter

Sylvia Plath both embraced that concept,

albeit different countries in different
eras: Sylvia Plath was quite Belarus,
1990s, but The Everlasting Muse
was definitely Germany, 1966.
Arguably the biggest experiment of all
was hiring Ben Allen, the Atlanta producer
who made his name with Gnarls Barkley and
Animal Collective, and who, on the face of it,
seems an unlikely fit for B&S unique brand
of baroque pop. As it turns out, the band had
approached a number of producers during a
lengthy and frustrating recruitment process
that drummer Richard Colburn describes as
an inexact science. Getting people at the
right time for the right price was difficult.
A lot of modern producers dont do full
records, and trying to pin somebody down
isnt easy, adds Colburn. We went through

a process of people going, Nope, cant

do it, and eventually it was a bit like,
Well, who are we gonna get?

the group visited a nearby megachurch
(It was more like a 7,000-capacity mother

sick childrens ward for an impromptu
performance of Journeys Dont Stop

however, Murdoch caught a bug and
couldnt shake it off for almost a year,
throwing the entire project into disarray.
I felt rotten over that winter when we
were writing the LP, he remembers. I
was really struggling and said to Stevie
[Jackson, guitarist], Im not going to
Atlanta. This is madness. But we talked
about it, and we realized that in the past,
the experience of making some of our

CHRISTOPHER MANSFIELD, A.K.A. FENCES, HITS AN EMOTIVE BULLS-EYE WITH ARROWS OFF HIS
SOPHOMORE RELEASE, LESSER OCEANS. BY EMILY ZEMLER. PHOTOGRAPHED BY JASON LANDIS

Christopher Mansfield, who plays music

under the moniker Fences, has dozens of
tattoos. Colorful, Sailor Jerry-meets-Day
of the Dead images cover his body, even
crawling up his neck and onto his face. But
the most significant inking encircles one
of his wrists: the words WHAT WOULD SARA
DO? Its a reference to Sara Quin, one half
of Tegan and Sara, who pulled Mansfield out
of obscurity when she discovered his music
on Myspace in 2009. Quin produced Fences
self-titled debut album, which came out
in 2010, and shes been like a big sister
to the musician ever since.
Shes so collected and logical, says
Mansfield during a conversation at Lamill,
a hip coffee shop in Los Angeles Silver
Lake neighborhood. She always told
me to consider what she would do.
Mansfield, who talks from behind a pair
of sunglasses as he brandishes one cigarette
after another, does not always feel collected
and logical. In fact, after touring for his first
album, he cut ties with his manager and record
label and found himself unsure of his creative
future. I knew that I would always do it, but
I didnt know to what level, says Mansfield
in regard to music writing. I wasnt sure if
Id ever make another record or tour again.
I had released one record, sold like 10,000
copies, did Lollapalooza and two cool tours.
But what did I have? I had no idea.
He moved away from his hometown
of Seattle to New York. There, Mansfield
reconnected with Ben Greenspan, an old
friend from his college days at Berklee,
who was visiting the city at the time, and

now plays guitar in Fences. During the winter
of 2011, the duo spent time in Greenspans
home in Boston, writing and recording
demos, with no real plan for their release.
The songs came quickly and reflected
Mansfields anxious state of mind at the time.
I dont want to say it was a Hail Mary, but
in a lot of ways it was, he says. We werent
signed, and we didnt have management.
We didnt have anything at the time we were
making the record. Theres a desperate feel
within the music and we ran with that.
There were moments when we played back
songs and one of us would start crying.
Mansfield admits that it seems forced
to talk about that period in his life. There
was a lot of posturing on the recordtrying
to sound tough, he says. It was a way of
dealing with the stress of that moment and
being brave and accepting. Its me trying
to be brave but not really being brave at all.
His music found its way to the offices of
higher-ups at Elektra Records, where he was
quickly signed. The label will unveil Lesser
Oceans, Fences second album, on January
13. Between that time in Boston and now,
Mansfield collaborated with producers Chris
Walla and Jacquire King and tapped old
Seattle friends Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
for the single Arrows. The songs have
shifted since those early demos in terms
of sonic production, but they havent lost
their emotional tone. Its using better sounds,
which is good because it allows people
to understand more, notes Mansfield.
I wanted it to really get to people instantly.
Lesser Oceans expands on the indie-folk
sound of Fences debut, adding a shimmery
Death Cab for Cutie-esque layer to the
melodies. Mansfield is now touring with
Fences as a four-piece, which lends to
the more layered, complex instrumentation.
For the songwriter, it feels like the opening
of a new chapter, one where hes less anxious
and more settled. He hopes to establish
roots in both New York and Los Angeles,
and eventually set up a home studio. In the
meantime, he proudly stands behind the new
album. I learned an important lesson as
an artist: When things are frustrating, fight
back with work, he says. You dont need a
manager or a label. If you can make really cool,
engaging, and fresh music, people will come
to you. We didnt have shit, and then we made
13 songs, and everyone I gave it to wanted
to do something. It was fairly easy after that.
He pauses, inhales his cigarette, and adds:
I only have one job, and thats to make music.

SUNBEAM SOUND MACHINE

SILVERDALE, U.K.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

MEMBERS: Tom Higham and Ben Fletcher

While Aquilo might be categorized

as electro-pop, their music is a
relaxing and refined affair. Tom
Highams soothing vocals build
alongside the beats, pairing
perfectly with drawn-out synths,
reverberations, and underlying
hints of bass and guitar being
quietly plucked in the background.
Although Higham and Ben Fletcher
were formerly part of heavy rock
bands Cry Baby Aeroplanes and The
Dark Con of Man, once they started
writing together, a chill, acoustic
vibe emerged, with the electronic
element a natural evolution
that developed in the recording
process. The end result: a seamless
production that sends listeners
adrift into another dimension.

Under the moniker Sunbeam

Sound Machine, Aussie multiinstrumentalist Nick Sowersby
took to the garage of his shared
house in a Melbourne suburb to
record his debut full-length album,
Wonderer. Dreamy and genreblurring, the LP swings freely
from 60s-tinged shoegaze to
approachable ambient, with every
song enveloped in a thick gauze
of nostalgia. Far from dance
music, Sunbeam Sound Machine
is more suited to soundtracking
a peaceful appreciation of early

Stevie Naders sound spans
a broad range. His 2013 album

The variations have similar underlying

unexpectedly ebb and flow. Just
when you think there will be an
explosion of sound, the song takes
a surprising turn toward ambience.
Similarly, when you anticipate a
moment of calm, the tracks rhythm
suddenly quickens. Given the multiinstrumentalists backgrounds
in experimenting with production
and their interests in hip-hop, R&B,
and house, it only makes sense
that each song explores various
styles and reveals a new hook
after every listen. EM

BEN SCHWARTZ IS THIS CLOSE TO BECOMING A COMEDY

SUPERPOWER IN HOLLYWOOD. HERE IS HOW AND WHY.
BY MAXWELL WILLIAMS. PHOTOGRAPHED BY RAMONA ROSALES
Ben Schwartz pauses, unsure of what
to order. The actor-comedian-writer rests
his hand on a bottle of kombucha, that
fermented, neo-hippie, effervescent tea.
He raises an eyebrow, and asks the barista
at the little caf on Melrose Place in West
Hollywood if its good, before warily deciding
to try it. I warn him that the beverage is
an acquired taste as we walk to a nearby
bench. We sit, and I watch him pop the top
and give it a whiff. This smells fucking
terrible, he says, his nose flared. I dont
know how this is going to go. He takes
a swig. And makes the kind of grimace
that youd expect from any first-timer.
Schwartz doesnt have all that much in
common with kombucha. But just like the
probiotic swill itself, the 33-year-old triple
threat, too, has an inherent sweetness
punctured by something wry and angular.
Hes rangy, able to cover everything from
the brilliantly absurd, and hugely popular,
Jean-Ralphio on the NBC sitcom Parks
and Recreation to the brash, sneaky Clyde
Oberholt on Showtimes business-world
dramedy House of Lies to co-starring
with Jason Bateman and Tina Fey in last
Septembers This Is Where I Leave You
as a rabbi named Boner.
Raised in the Bronx, the current Angeleno
cut his teeth as an intern at Upright Citizens
Brigade and as a page at Late Show With
David Letterman before finally wedging his foot
in the door with a few monologue jokes for the
show. In New York, he scored some small film
roles and writing jobs, before realizing that if he
were ever going to make a career of comedy,
hed have to relocate to Hollywood. Within a
week of arriving, Schwartz had booked a movie
with Sarah Silverman (Peep World), a pilot for
a Mitch Hurwitz sitcom, and a gig co-writing
the Emmy-winning opening number for Hugh
Jackmans hosting turn at the Oscars. Its
in my apartment, he says of the prime-time
television award. Nobody knows I have it.
Someone must have found out, because
soon after, Schwartz was in demand as a
comedy writer. He sold a script to Universal
and started punching up big-budget action

movies with the jokes he honed writing for the

Late Show. The acting continued to flourish,
tooalongside his other roles, he started to
pick up fans for his guest-starring turn on
NBCs Parks and Recreation as Jean-Ralphio.
I was at a store in a mall in my hometown
and some girl freaked out so much that
her manager made her go to the back,
says Schwartz. I was with my best friend
in the world, and he goes, You asshole.
You dont deserve that.
These days, the worlds of acting and writing
are finally converging for Schwartz. After
scoring a bit role in Seth Rogen and James
Francos The Interview (out on Christmas
Day), Schwartz pitched a movie idea to
Anchorman director Adam McKay, who loved
it and signed on to produce, bringing Rogen

on to the project. (Rogen will be co-producing

the film in addition to starring in it.) He cant
say much about the movie, but he does
describe the philosophy behind his writing:
Ill write a 26-page, single-spaced outline
every single thing that happens in the movie.
I have notes on my iPhonepages and pages
it could be a line of dialogue, or a character that
only rides around on roller skates. Then you can
build on that with something likebecause his
sister passed away. I like to put normal human
beings in extraordinary circumstances.
He takes a final swig of kombucha, declares
that it has, in fact, grown on him, and heads
back to his nearby apartment to write, leaving
me to reflect on his last statement: A normal
human being in an extraordinary circumstance.
That sounds about right.

NOT FOR NOTHING

WALE RIFFS ON HIS FAVORITE SEINFELD EPISODES AS HE PREPARES TO DROP HIS FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM.
BY JESSICA HERNDON. PHOTOGRAPHED BY STEVEN TAYLOR. ILLUSTRATED BY KELLY SHAMI
Most of us love the hit comedy series Seinfeld. But rapper Wale
really loves it. Nothing is realer than the awkwardness of some
of those situations, he says of the sitcom that inspired three of
his albums: 2008s The Mixtape About Nothing, 2010s More
About Nothing, and his upcoming The Album About Nothing.
The latest release is well timed, with 2014 marking the 25th
anniversary of Seinfelds debut on NBC. The first mixtape was
about the industry, details the pensive 30-year-old (whose real
name is Olubowale Akintimehin) in a Los Angeles recording studio
after a late-night session. The second was a love story. This one
is my relationship with the people who got me here.
Wales Seinfeld-informed songs emphasize the lyricists ability
to weave his sense of humor with a penchant for tackling racial and

political issues. On his new album, Wale addresses the Trayvon

Martin tragedy following a snippet of a rant by Jason Alexanders
character, George, about hopelessness. Like the actors on the
show, Wale successfully blends heavy subject matter with hardfought comedy, resulting in a hell of a good time. Danceable
jam The Tonight incorporates funky go-go, a subgenre born
in Wales hometown, Washington, D.C., in the mid-1960s.
I wanted to get back to the roots of where I came from, he says.
Still, the sickest perk of titling your record The Album About
Nothing is scoring studio time with Jerry Seinfeld himself. He
made an analogy about a glass egg and balancing certain things
in his career when writing the show, says Wale. I just expanded on
that. Here, the rapper expounds on his top five Seinfeld moments.

YADA, YADA,
YADA...
VOICE-MAIL
SWITCH
(FROM
THE PHONE
MESSAGE,
SEASON 2,
EPISODE 7):
George leaving a crazy voice mail on his
girlfriends machine is the modern-day version
of drunk-texting your girl (or an ex). The dialogue
between Jerry and George when they are in
her apartment trying to switch tapes is genius.

NO SOUP
FOR YOU
(FROM THE
SOUP NAZI,
SEASON 7,
EPISODE 6):

GEORGE
EATS GARBAGE
(FROM THE
GYMNAST,
SEASON 6,
EPISODE 6):

Everyone knows about the Soup Nazi: From when they

are standing in line to when they approach the counter is
comedic brilliance. We all have been on the wrong side of
bad customer service, but sometimes you gotta just go
with it to get what you want. Its kinda like certain stores
in SoHo [New York] that have dope clothing but really
dismissive employees. If you want the clothes, you gotta
play by their rules.

George getting caught by his girlfriends mom

eating food out of the garbage was a wild and
hilarious moment. Later on in the episode,
she catches him wiping down a random car
with a newspaper. Its the perfect portrayal of
how sometimes the people you most want to
impress only catch you in your worst moments.

ELAINE
CANT GET
A DOCTOR
(FROM THE
PACKAGE,
SEASON 8,
EPISODE 5):

MASTER OF
MY DOMAIN
(FROM THE
CONTEST,
SEASON 4,
EPISODE 11):

When Elaine couldnt get a doctor to treat her

rash because she was a difficult patient was
another wild moment. Somehow Uncle Leo
ends up with Sharpie-drawn eyebrows, and
Kramer becomes Dr. Van Nostrandclassic
Seinfeld comedy. It also kind of makes you
paranoid the next time you visit the doctor.

This is probably my favorite episode of

ll time. Its a relatable story line [George,
Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer compete to see
who can go the longest without masturbating],
but the circumstances are insane. It makes
you think, Would I be able to control myself
in that situation? Would you?

SURF WAR
LONDONS ONLY REAL IS MAKING SUNNIER
TUNES THAN HIS SCUZZ-ROCK CONTEMPORARIES.
BY LIZA DARWIN. PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALEX DE MORA

He may have grown up in dreary West

London, but Niall Galvins slacker surf-rock
sound is so authentic that even California
natives would be jealous. The 23-year-old
musician, who performs as Only Real, has
spent the past several years perfecting this
unexpected mash-up of beachy melodies, 90s
hip-hop beats, and garagey scuzz on groovy
tracks like Cadillac Girl. Now hes ready to
spread more of that sunshine to the masses
when his debut album drops this spring.
I cant wait for people to really be able to
hear the whole collection of songs rather than
just a single, explains Galvin over the phone
from his new house in London. This way, you
can get so much of the pictureyou can fill in
the gaps and hopefully people will see more
of what Im about. If psychedelic guitar-driven
singles like Pass the Pain are any indication,
get ready for head-bobbing, blissful jams that
are beyond worthy of soundtracking your next
road trip. I want people to listen to my songs
when theyre driving in the car on a sunny
day, he says. Or, OK, if its in the rain,
at least you can pretend its nice out.
Recorded over this past year, Galvin
divided his time on the LP between studios
in South London (alongside producer Dan
Carey) and Atlanta, where he collaborated
with Ben H. Allen. Ive been a fan
of everything hes done in the past with
people like Deerhunter and Washed Out,
and I think you can hear this on the album,
he says of Allen.

074

NYLONGUYSMAG.COM

Galvin started playing music when he was

14 (I stole my brothers acoustic guitar and
played simple little melodies and chords, he
remembers). Shortly after swapping it out
for an electric guitar and ditching classic
sounds for samples, he developed Only Reals
signature rolls-off-the-tongue lyrical style. My
vocals are both a product of having listened
to a lot of rap and hip-hop growing up, and
also just the way that my voice wanted to
blow over the guitar melody, he says. Im
not the best singer in the typical sense, so
I think that was maybe my way of combating
that and finding my own unique voice. Now
hes inspired by everything from The Beach
Boys to skate videos to shoegaze, all of which
fuse together into a party-ready package.
Galvins already thrown a couple of
ragers-slash-performances in London. One
in particular, on Portobello Road, was so
crowded that people were climbing up the
walls. Whenever I see any of my friends
that I havent seen in a while, they always
bring up that night, he says with a laugh.
It was that ridiculous. Hell bring the party
Stateside later this year at SXSW, but for
now, hes content with taking Only Real
a day at a time. I very much look at it in
terms of grabbing opportunities as they
arise. You cant plan too much, Ive learned,
because things are always changing. For
me, its just about going with the flow.

THURSTON
MOORE
BY MARK YARM.
PHOTOGRAPHED BY BEN RAYNER

New Yorks still my hometown, says

Thurston Moore, who, on this warm autumn
day, is sitting outside an East Williamsburg,
Brooklyn coffee shop relaying the dramatic
changes his life has undergone the past
few years. Its not, like, now that Im
living in London Im becoming a royalist
or something. Moorewho, as co-founder
of pioneering New York alt-rockers Sonic
Youth, is something of music royalty
himselfrelocated to the U.K. last year,
in large part to live with his girlfriend, book
editor Eva Prinz. Hes back in town now
to promote the excellentThe Best Day,
his first solo album since Sonic Youth went
on indefinite hiatus in 2011, after Moore
and bandmate Kim Gordon announced the
dissolution of their marriage of 27 years.
Moore recordedThe Best Day in London
with a band composed of Sonic Youth
drummer Steve Shelley, My Bloody
Valentine bassist Deb Googe, and Nought
guitaristJames Sedwards.The feedback
Ive been getting is interesting: Oh, it
sounds like a late-period Sonic Youth
record, reports Moore, a preternaturally
boyish 56-year-old whose jacket is
adorned with a BADGER YOUR LIBRARIAN
pin (theres an illustration of, yes, a badger
with its snout in a book). Im like, Well,
I am late-period Sonic Youth. He laughs.
As for whether the groups indefinite
hiatus will become definite, he cannot
say. The band cant function with Kim
and I splitting up, and to look at the future
is almost impossibleits too intense
a fallout, he says. So we just dont know.
Theres no official statement that Sonic
Youth is over. Nobodys gonna write that
statementI certainly wouldnt. What
Moore has written outon the front of the
days New York Times science section
is his list of records that helped make
him the man and musician he is today.

KIMONO
MY HOUSE

JAZZACTUEL

This is a little self-serving because

I compiled and edited this box set
with [writer] Byron Coley. Its music
from the French label BYG, which
in the late 60s, early 70s
documented a lot of underground
American free-jazz players
Anthony Braxton, Archie Shepp,
Don Cherry, Sonny Sharrockwho
went to Europe, where they found
a lot of acceptance. I got very
interested in jazz while touring
around America, listening to
cassettes in a Sonic Youth van.
I became a complete egghead.

This record made [Los Angeles]

Sparks superstars in England, but
in the U.S. they were just looked
upon as weirdos. I got Kimono
My House when I was around 14.
It had all these really fascinating
arrangements, without being too
overblown. The lyricswhich were
primarily written by Ron Mael,
the keyboard player, and sung
by his brother Russellwere really
humorous but wildly literate,
like some kind of art-school mindblast. It was shockingly great,
and I played it to death.

IGGY AND
THE STOOGES

RAMONES
RAMONES

I remember leaving the hospital

where my father was passing away,
and going into a record store with
my mother. The first Ramones
album had just been released,
and I brought it home. All my family
was there and bummed out that
my father was dying, and I put
this record on. Id never heard
the Ramones. I thought it was
gonna be like a Stooges record,
and it sounded very jaunty to
me. Everybody got up and started
dancing to it. They just needed
to dance.

RAW POWER

I saw that record in a Woolworths

when it came out. It had a sticker
on the front that said Raw Power
by Iggy and the Stoogesit was
this dripping kind of Munsters
graphic that drew me in. And that
record sliced my head off. The
aggression and psychosexual
imagery were really mysterious
and alluring. In a way, it brought
me into all those other aspects
of music and literature that
were really intriguing, like
William S. Burroughs and
the Beat Generation.

BRIAN ENO

VARIOUS
ARTISTS

HERE COME
THE WARM JETS

NO NEW YORK

Brian Eno put together this

compilation of the no-wave scene
in New York, and he chose four
bands: Teenage Jesus and the
Jerks, Mars, Contortions, and
DNA. At the time, I was on the
fence about no wave because
they attacked things that I still
held preciousthey were anti-Patti
Smith, anti-Television, anti-leadguitar solos. But listening to No
New York, I really heard the music.
The Mars songs were a superdirect inspiration for Sonic Youth.

I loved [Enos band] Roxy Music,

and when this came out, I listened
to it incessantly. Its purposefully
art school. The lyrics are completely
evocative and funny and wild, and
I always wondered what they were
about. I heard much later that he
just wrote them for the sake of
how they would sound. They meant
nothing but were created to affect
anyone and everyone in their own
personal way. For me, it was like,
I want to write poetry like this.

grooming: mark edio at see management using kiehls.

You would see pictures of them in

the British weeklies that wed steal
from [East Village newsstand] Gem
Spa. They were coming out of firstgeneration London punk, so when
Cut came out, you expected this raw,
savage punk-rock mess, but it was
super-sophisticated dub mixing and
idiosyncratic songwriting. It was this
female voice talking about issues
of being a girl, and it was just hardcore, with no apologies and no
judgments. It was nakedto the point
where they were naked on the cover.

BLACK FLAG
DAMAGED

In the early 80s, I was playing with

Glenn Branca, but I was younger
than the people in that scene, so
I was kind of caught between New
York art damage and the death of
Sid Vicious. Then I see these kids
with bald heads and leather jackets
on St. Marks Place, and Black Flag
comes around. Its right when they
got Henry Rollins as the singer, and
hes a fuckin monster onstage. It
was the most physical, engaged band
I had ever witnessed. Black Flag were
taking no prisoners, and Damaged
captured all of that material.

LL COOL J
RADIO

My list is kind of a typical, whiteboy underground-rock list. But

for me, the great music is made
in the African-American milieus
of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B. The first
LL Cool J album was so ferocious
and hard-hitting. It was the sound
of somebody from New York who
actually grew up in New York.
When it came out, Sonic Youth
was doing our thing, and it was
like, New York City is the best
place to be right now. This is the
sound of killing it. Just killing it.

Two separate volumes in his catalogue are entitled I Am

Not a Human Being.
But you can confirm that Lil Wayne (n Dwayne Michael
Carter, Jr.) is legitimately flesh and blood if you successfully
negotiate security. Closer to the compound, one can spot
a butler offering hors doeuvres just beyond the Tetris-like
facade of tilted glass rectangles. If you furnish his minions
with the magic password, a metallic drawbridge gate will
rise. This is your cue to enter.
A certain hallucinogenic expectation comes with the
territory. Waynes principal residence should theoretically
glow with the phosphorescence of a Chocolate Factory
or Playboy Mansion. But no codeine syrup waterfalls,
exotic harems, or pet tigers exist here. Just a koi pond.
The butler isnt real either. Its just a statue, frozen in
service by the front window.
Its past 10 p.m. on a balmy Thursday in early November.
Roughly a month from now Wayne will release Tha Carter

V, one of the years most thirstily anticipated albums, rumored

to include guest appearances by Drake, Kendrick Lamar,
and, inevitably, most of your other favorite rap stars.
This interview is intended for its promotion, but by most
forms of accounting, Wayne is roughly 350 hours late.
Our meeting was originally supposed to occur in Los
Angeles, where Wayne lived for much of the first half of
2014 before embarking on a tour with Drakeone of the
two marquee artists on his Young Money Entertainment label
(Nicki Minaj being the other). At some point, Wayne decided
that he didnt want to leave Miami after all. Hence, hes
somewhere in this maze, asleep, recording, or levitating atop
a skateboard smoking the worlds most rarified strain of kush.
Even if you breach the fortress of solitude, expect to wait
before being received by the emperor. A 2 p.m. start time
becomes 10 p.m., becomes whenever Wayne rousts himself
from an evening nap. Upon awakening, a headache might
strike. So youll probably kill time in the living room. And
unless youve appeared on an episode of MTV Cribs or
use summer as a verb, its unlikely that youve been inside
one like Lil Waynes.
Light from a full moon seeps through
a grid of glass windowpanes. The color
scheme is Acropolis gray. It feels more like
a pimps lunar shrine than a lived-in home.
Basquiat paintings and Andy Warhol Marilyn
silk screens adorn the walls. A baby grand
piano hulks beneath 50-foot ceilings. Multiple
guitars slouch beside art and mythology
books, a telescope, framed photos of Jimi
Hendrix, B.B. King, Bob Marley, Waynes
children, and artsy pin-up girl collages.
There are several portraits of Weezy F. Baby
including one where hes the aquatic infant
from Nirvanas Nevermind cover. Skate
magazines rest atop copies of Robb Report.
The platinum plaques on the entry walls
remind you why millions regard him as the
greatest of his generation. Hes sold over
15 million records, eclipsing Elvis Presley
as the male artist with the most entries
on the Billboard Hot 100. A dedicated
shelf displays his Grammys for Best Rap
Album (The Carter III), Best Rap Solo
Performance (A Milli), and Best Rap Song
(Lollipop). These cohabitate with MTV awards, World
Music awards, Billboard awardsthe list continues.
I was always ready for the call. Thats the best way to
explain it. Waynes always ready, says Wayne later that night.
When its my turn, I make way more than the most of it.
If youre ready when they call you, and you make the most
of your time, then theyll never stop calling you. If a personal
philosophy explains Waynes longevity and seismic career
swings, this might be it. The same idea applies to being
granted an audience with him. You dont sell a million copies
in the first week (as he did on 2008s Tha Carter III) without
being cognizant of your abilities to captivate or intimidate.
Ask a stupid question and hes apt to stonewall or dismiss
you. Approach from a latitude of respect and understanding
and hell open up sincerely. But you better be ready.
When the call comes, its almost midnight. Wayne wants
to talk in a wing only accessible by returning outside to walk
past a panther-black Maybach Landaulet (price tag: $2.5

If you somehow find yourself at the gates of Lil Waynes

fortified Miami Beach palace, a security guard will interrogate
you as soon as your car door slams shut. Hell require that
you state your business, and even if said business checks
out, youll be zealously scrutinized as though youre
trespassing on an arsenal of nuclear warheads. The
15,000-square-foot, $11 million, hyper-modern waterfront
compound nests on a banana-palm-ringed island. Waynes
publicist prefers that the exact location be kept secret,
and for good reason. Over the past decade and a half,
the 32-year-old from the impoverished Hollygrove section
of New Orleans has been worshipped at levels usually
reserved for European soccer gods, martyred icons,
and Marvel superheroes.
During an age when celebrities flash their day-to-day
indecencies to reveal that theyre just like us, Wayne is the
extraterrestrial inverse. Its almost more difficult to envision
him as a corporeal breathing and belching mortal than as a
rap game Roald Dahl character. His self-descriptions burnish
the image. Hes a beast, a dog, a Martian, a vampire, a goblin.

million). He waits inside the sort of fantasy cave that you

mightve dreamed up at 15 years oldthe age when Wayne
joined Cash Moneys The Hot Boys and went platinum
while still in high school.
Graffiti scrawls and blocky cartoon characters decorate
the walls. A line of Lego men is neatly assembled on a ledge.
Theres the requisite Pac-Man machine. In a small kitchen,
a chef cooks a midnight dinner of spaghetti and meatballs
and corn. Finally, theres Wayne, groggily reclining on
a couch in maroon mesh shorts and a black Trukfit tee
(his clothing line), sitting underneath a frieze of 100
skateboards of varying fluorescent colors and models.
Theres a stark contrast between Waynes current
sluggishness and his feral-gremlin-after-dark stage voltage.
If you didnt know any better, you mightve guessed that he
hadnt peeled himself off the couch in weeks. His dreadlocks
splay like the rabbit ears of a television antenna. His bleary
eyes squint with half-interest at the NBA basketball game
on the television. Every square inch of skin is covered in
tattoos. With a drowsy grunt, he eventually acknowledges
that someone has entered. Barely glancing up, he offers
his knuckles for a pound, and sparks a blunt.
I never want to say this word, but its easy for me right
now, admits Wayne, exhaling smoke and taking a birdlike
bite of pasta. His voice is low and muddled, like cleats
stabbing gravel. And its so easy that its complicated.
This is his headspace leading up to the release of Tha
Carter V. As one of the most improvisational rappers of all
time, Wayne is notoriously loath to articulate what often
comes effortlessly. Im just a regular street nigga thats
a little smarter than the rest. I rap whatever comes up in
my head, he adds. Whatever rhymes with the next word
and how Im feeling. I start rapping and we find something
within what I just said and make a song out of it. His words
recall the John Keats quote: If poetry comes not as naturally
as the leaves to a tree, it had better not come at all. But

Keats relied on the quill and tablet and Wayne insists

that he never writes.
Its been that way since 2004, when he molded the
nimble bayou bounce of his early style to a fanged and
intricate attack indebted to traditional East Coast slickness.
While other rappers were seeking risk-free replications of
gangster archetypes, Wayne got weirder and weirder, using
Prince, syrup, sex, and weed as divine muses. When he
raps, he makes you think, says Minaj, the first female artist
Wayne signed to his Young Money imprint. His wordplay,
skill, intelligence, metaphors, cartoonish flows, and voices
are unmatched. He taught me the true meaning of work
ethic. Even when youre the boss, work like its your first
day on the job.
Cranking out surrealistic pun-and-simile jags, Wayne
forged his legend by demolishing every hot single, dropping
countless mixtapes, and proclaiming himself The Best
Rapper Alive. By the release of Tha Carter III, the arrogance
felt prophetic. And then he went to jail. I went in there at
138 pounds and came out 152. That was the only change
I knew in there, says Wayne with a chuckle when asked
about the long-term impact of the eight months of 2010
that he spent on Rikers Island for attempted criminal
possession of a weapon.
But incarceration altered a few things. What once came
off as inspired mania sometimes started to feel erratic and
out of focus. A generation of artists raised on Wayne
emerged, making his stylistic innovations part of their
portfolio. He made a rap-rock album. Probationary drug tests
also made marathon weed-smoking sessions impossible.
Call it tangential, but a sober Wayne is as unthinkable as
a teetotaling Bob Marley, Willie Nelson, or Snoop Dogg.
His music often missed that narcotic elasticity. I dont know
how it works, but I know that I need weedextra when Im
creating, says Wayne, becoming more alive and affable with
every hit, as though the THC is laced with caffeine. Two more

turn to religion or doting parenthood; Wayne found

skateboarding. He discovered it a few years ago while
watching a Fuse show about a skateboarding prodigy
named Alex Midler. Theyve since become close friends.
His spirit was so awesome that he made a motherfucking
nigga from the streets pick up a skateboard and fall in love
with it, says Wayne. In a couple of hours, Wayne and friends
will sneak into a local elementary school to practice pop
shuvits and fakies on its stairwells. Theyll have until 6 a.m.,
when the principal arrives. Hopefully, Ill land them. If not,
Ill kill myself trying, he says. Its not idle bravado. Wayne
showed up to the photo shoot for this story with a black
eye from an unforgiving skate ramp. SASARAF is how
he summarizes his day-to-day life in 2014. Smoke and
skate and rap and fuck.
The joy from his newfound hobby has seemingly spilled
over into his old calling. His new songs sound as deliriously
locked-in as anything since his great psychedelic run. Once
he moved to L.A., he got into a zone that he hadnt been in in

years. Ever since then, hes been at it every single day,

says Cortez Bryant, Waynes longtime manager, A&R guru,
and Chief Visionary Officer of Young Money. I think hes in a
phase where hes out to show people that hes still the best.
Wayne would be the first to agree. His monomaniacal drive
to be the best brings to mind his friend, Kobe Bryant, who
first Twitter-leaked the news that Carter V Season was
approaching. As for the latest installment of his series,
Wayne says that hes rolled his stylistic experimentations
into one, rather than compartmentalizing songs for specific
audiences. Hes also been possessed by a sudden
perfectionist streak, part of an effort to make his raps easier
to comprehend. I never gave a fuck about that shit before,
rasps Wayne. I was always like, Youre from the South,
this is your drawl, and if they dont understand your lyrics,
then they just dont get it. Im not simplifying things because
I never simplify shit, but I do want to be understood.
The specter of retirement lingers in nearly every interview.
He insists that hes serious about it without the tacit wink
that accompanies most musicians idle threats. Tha Carter
V was originally touted as his last solo album, a claim hes
since rescinded. He refuses to give a concrete date for his
departure, but implies that its sooner rather than later.
Even if you are Lil Wayne, there is only so long that you
can be Lil Wayne.
As he incinerates blunt after blunt, you sense his creeping
discontent with the industry. He initially wanted to package
Tha Carter V as a double CD, but big-box retailers
threatened to refuse to carry it, wary of $20-plus records
in an evaporating market. There is also a generation gap.

When I first started doing it, you only did it to be the best
not to have a hot song or popularity or for Instagram or
Twitter, says Wayne, sighing. Im one of the last of a dying
breedthe ones who are only about the music. You have
to want to be unforgettable. The only other people who
I can think of like that are Kanye and Beyonc.
He qualifies his statement by admitting that he doesnt
know for certain. Its just his impression. But give or take
a few more, the assessment isnt far off. There will always
be gifted original artists, but you cant mint another Lil
Wayne, let alone market-research one into existence. What
I mean by that is that all I am is music. Thats all I do and
all I know, 366 days a year, 25 hours a day, eight days
a week, says Wayne, snuffing out one more blunt, his
gestures suddenly turning slightly weary and ancient,
somewhere else again. A beast, a dog, a Martian, a goblin,
an island. This is my life and what I breathe, he says.
This isnt something I do. Its who I am.

Other contraband has a less dependable track record.
In October of 2012, a pair of seizures forced Wayne into
the hospital. Another set struck in March of the following
year. The details are murky, but the situation was so severe
that TMZ reported and then retracted the claim that Wayne
received his last rites. The tabloid news site alleged that
doctors found dangerously high levels of codeine in his
system. Wayne countered by admitting that he suffered from
epilepsy, which had stricken him many times in the past.
I wasnt aware of anything. It just happened and I woke
up in the hospital. I dont remember anything about the
experience, says Wayne with a shrug. It might have been
the reality. It might have felt like it in the news, but for me,
I was just the guy in the hospital chilling. If anything, the
outpouring of support from other celebrities surprised him
the most. He expected concern from fans and family, but
received heartfelt convalescent visits from Drake, Minaj,
Usher, and Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul. I dont
mean to sound bad, but it wasnt no life-changing thing,
continues Wayne, momentarily slipping into memories
hed rather not dredge. I shot myself when I was 12.
I grew up in Hollygrove. Ive seen way worse.
When youre blessed with obscene talent, obsession,
and millions of dollars at an early age, the logical outcome
is to push your invincibility to the brink. Music history is a

An astronaut dangles 15 feet above the crowd while

the guy next to me keeps whisper-shouting, Praise
Jeeeesusssss. The audience of 5,600 bristles with
excitement as gospel messages strobe across three
huge screens onstage. Its Thursday, October 16, and
this is the opening act of No Other Name, a sold-out,
three-day spiritual conference in New York City. Hillsong,
the wildly popular, Australian-born evangelical megachurch
is hosting the event. Hillsong began with a small gathering
of 45 Christians outside Sydney in the early 80s, and
is now a Pentecostal behemoth of about 200,000,
with 11 other campuses in London, Moscow, Paris,
Barcelona, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm,
Konstanz (Germany), Cape Town, New York, and
Los Angeles. Conferences like No Other Name
are the brainchild of Hillsong founder Brian Houston
and his wife, Bobbie, both of whom are in New York
tonight to get us amped on the Lord.
At first glance, many of Hillsongs youth-focused
initiatives appear to involve enlisting proselytes to
a cult of cool and a good time more so than to a
church in the service of God. The New York branchs
first group baptism took place in the rooftop pool at the
swinging Gansevoort Hotel in the Meatpacking District,
and another is scheduled for Times Square at the Grace,
a trendy boutique hotel where the pool glows under pink
neon lights. Celebrities are always more than welcome at
Hillsong. For instance, Justin Bieber was recently snapped
by paparazzi attending Sunday services in New York
with friends Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin.
According to a recent Pew Research survey, 20
percent of Americans say they have shared their religious

not surprising then, with 261,000 followers on Instagram,
557,000 on Twitter, and 847,000 on Facebook, that
Hillsong turns to the Internet for promotion, and with
great success. On their website, they have an article
titled Six Tips to Improve Your Social Media. They
would know. Just a quick look around this crowd tonight,
which is full of models, actors, and musicians, begins
to explain why Hillsong has become such a magnet
for bright young wannabes.
Hillsong, a church drenched in original pop music,
is a family operation. Brian and Bobbie are the senior
pastors. Bobbie champions womens issues through
Hillsong Sisterhood and Colour Conference, her personal
initiatives. Their elder son, Joel, a handsome, NBA-sized
evangelist, is the lead singer for Hillsong United, the
creative director of Hillsong Church, and the co-pastor of

the church in New York. Hillsong Los Angeles,

which opened this year, is headed by Brian and
Bobbies younger son, Benjamin, and his wife, Lucille.

Once the astronaut exits, the serious worship begins,
backed by pleasant, echoey gospel songs, all written and
performed by Hillsong Worship, one of the churchs bands.
Music is the glue that binds this congregation and makes
it so popular with millennials. Hillsong Music Australia
(H.M.A.), the parent label responsible for the production
and distribution of the churchs catalog of recorded
material, released its first album, Spirit and Truth, in
1988, and since then has sold more than 16 million units
worldwide, netting about $100 million every year. In 2015,
Warner Bros. will release a documentary on the Hillsong
music craze. You go to a Hillsong in Kiev or Cape Town
or London, and theres always the same energy, because
one thing that Hillsong has done really well is its music,
says Kelly Bollmann, a music producer who works with
Timbaland, and attends services at Hillsong Los Angeles.
By 8:15 p.m., the preaching has peaked, and the
audience, with their hands waving up to the sky like a field
of wheat in a soft wind, is singing along. Before the final
electric guitar riff fades, Brian Houston comes onstage
to welcome the congregation. A show of hands indicates
that more than three-quarters of them are out-of-towners.
He also announces that the buckets being passed around
are for tithingas much as we can give. (This is in addition
to the ticket price for the conference: $154.)

The evening is capped by Brians 45-minute sermon. He wears

simple black jeans and a navy blazer, and at one point he projects
a viral photograph he found on Google of a dachshund staring down
a lion, to illustrate strength in the face of adversity. Ignore the facts
and stand on truth, he declares in his strong, deep voice.
The church was founded under the name Hills Christian Life
Centre, in 1983, but was renamed Hillsong in the late 90s, when
Brian Houston merged his congregation with his father Franks parish,
Sydney Christian Life Centre. The new, two-headed church managed
steady growth and good community relations right up to 2000, when
it became known that Frank had sexually abused a boy in New Zealand
30 years earlier. Once Brian forced Frank out, he began to untether
the church from its fundamentalist roots, and to strip away the
exclusionary aspects that might prevent fresh young faces from
joining up. Hillsong has been growing exponentially ever since.
With Brians sermon and some remarks by Bobbie, Day 1
is a wrap. If you missed it, dont worry. The church has started
live-streaming their conferences through their app.

DAY 2: ITS FOR US AND BY US

By 10 a.m., all of the seats in the huge auditorium are filled. After
a few brief remarks by Brian, the lights dim, and the music picks up.
No Other Name is showcasing three of Hillsongs in-house bands.
Hillsong Worship, a folksy, stripped-down, mostly acoustic rock
group, comes out first, and the audience is on their feet immediately.
Bethany Brill, a 28-year-old hair and makeup artist, who freelances
for NYLON, tells me why she joined the Hillsong congregation in New
York. My church in Brooklyn was more older families, so I think I was
attracted to the amount of young, single people that looked and acted
like me and were in creative industries, she says. People walking
around Hillsong look like anybody I might see on a photo shoot. I was
like, OK, these are people like me. We probably think more alike or
understand the little lane of life that were in, so I could imagine that
wed understand God more in the same way, too. Another glance
around the conference auditorium, and I see a large contigent of the
young men and women Bethany is describing. They are having a blast.
At first, Hillsong grew by word of mouth in New York, but
subsequently social media and sophisticated promotional efforts
raised its profile significantly. It remains, however, a very friendly
environment to meet people and enjoy hook-filled tunes. By the
middle of Day 2 of No Other Name, the appeal of Hillsong is clear
to me. The evening program, Night Rally, for example, is designed

HILLSONG UNITED
AND LEAD PASTOR
AT HILLSONG NYC

000

to display young congregants talents in various creative

fields, especially those who are hoping to secure
unpaid volunteer positions within the organization.
Hillsong is essentially built on the backs of creative
young people eager to offer free labor and show
off their skills, from editing video footage to writing
and performing worship songs to ushering people
to their seats at conferences like this one.

DAY 3: THE STARS COME OUT

Saturday seems to come too soon, and it is crowded
with gospel highlights. During the afternoon session,
Judah Smith, a charismatic 36-year-old preacher
from Seattle (where he leads his own youth-focused
church) gets up and for nearly an hour blends
comedic anecdotes with soulful messages. When
Smith finishes, a South African comedy duo urges
audience members to sing their national anthems in
an American Idol-style contest. To an outsider like me,
this feels flat and awkward, but the crowds laughter
is deep and genuine, demonstrating just how happy
they all are to be here.
Hillsong United and Hillsong Young & Free, the
other two in-house bands, are set to perform today.
United are an indie-rock outfit fronted by Joel Houston.
Their song Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) made
it to No. 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014, and
theyre the crowds clear favorite. Each of the three
bands targets a special age range. United are for
folks like me, in their mid-twenties/early thirties.
Young & Free, on the other hand, deliver a cottoncandy blitzkrieglots of confetti and those inflatable
used-car-lot dancing men. They are the dazzling
finale of the three-day program.
Carl Lentz, the hipster preacher who leads the
New York branch of Hillsong with Joel Houston,
gives the final sermon. Lentz, who is 35, is routinely
compared to Billy Graham. Where Graham used TV
to reach his audience, Lentz has graduated to social
media. He has 159,000 followers on Instagram and
109,000 on Twitter. His social-media presence is an
effective marketing tool for the church. On Instagram,
for instance, Kevin Durant, NBA All-Star and reigning
league MVP, who was baptized by Lentz, playfully
tosses the preachers son in the air, and Bieber can
be seen pointing at the camera during a pickup
basketball game. In online photographs of Lentz,
he is typically wearing a leather motorcycle jacket
or a black streetwear outfit, and he often poses with
his wife, Laura, and their children.
Most evangelical churches are located in rural,
politically conservative, and culturally homogenous
areas in America, but Hillsong settles in the dense,
urban areas of New York and Los Angeles. This church
is a place thats built on faithful, normal people who
are kind of out of their depth, Lentz tells me later.
Theres only so much you can do in church. Some
churches have drama, acting, whatever, and we give
them that a little bit in conference, but music is
a core element of how we worship.
In the summer of 1957, Billy Graham led a 16-week
crusade inside Madison Square Garden, during which
he preached to nearly two million people. Carl Lentzs
appearance at No Other Name is just as ambitious.

He wants to draw more and more people to regular Sunday

services at the Manhattan Centers Grand Ballroom, and
he specifically aims to expand his congregation to include
almost everyone. Laura and I are leading this church,
and we have diverse relationships, so naturally our
church would have that. We dont hang out with all white
people, so why in the world would we go to a church
that is relevant only to white people? Thats one of the
advantages, I guess, of being in a church that champions
people, regardless of race or creed or upbringing.
Hopefully our church will always be super diverse. Thats
something thats intentional as much as it is cultural.
Hillsong may still be reluctant to face other current social
issues, however. At a press conference the day before
No Other Name began, for example, Lentz and Brian
Houston responded to allegations that the church is against
gay marriage. Houstons dodge was to say that the subject was too important
for us to reduce to yes or no. Later he cited Scripture to enforce his traditional
view on the matter, saying, I believe the writings of Paul are clear on this subject.
Hillsong, now 31 years old, is obviously still young. In fact, it is in the
advantageous position of being roughly the same age as its congregation.
Brian Houston may be 60 years old, but his kids arent. So far, the programming
for Hillsong has evolved with trends in this countrys youth culture. Maybe thats
why it seems so hip and relevant, and why it keeps growing. Then again, something
more calculated and self-serving may be a source for the churchs success.
As Lentz puts it, In that moment when you clearly see Gods grace, it can
make you look way better than you are.

Its better than bringing pot, swears
Adam Moskowitz. When you bring a

And while that probably depends on
what kind of party were talking about,
Moskowitz, a New York City cheesescene maven, speaks to a trend thats
very real: Curd stylings have gone the

joining the ranks of these grocery

right now cheese has plenty in its
favor. Specialization is trending, and
cheese has serious connoisseur

base that can be put to artisanal use.
Cheese is also steeped in heritage,
and who doesnt love the old-school?
Plus, it has a real mass appeal (that is,
if the Internets What cheese are

Moskowitz. Theres an enthusiasm

And this gusto is especially apparent
among the young, creative, urban

thats really unique about the cheese

all other explanations aside, the

weird. And we want the funk.

Favorite cheese fun fact:

Valencay goat cheese was shaped
by Napoleon. Upon returning
home after failing to conquer

the once-pyramid-shaped cheese.
As if it was mocking him, he drew
his saber and lopped off the top. The

Weirdest cheese youve
ever encountered: Timberdoodle
(Woodcock Farm, Weston, VT) is
a havarti style and definitely the most
confusingly scrumptious cheese

washed-rind cheese covered with
candidum mold, but its milk type
also changes with the season.

Most important thing to

consider when buying cheese:
Which cheeses are at their peak.
Ask your monger what he thinks
tastes best at the moment.
Favorite cheese + beer pairing:
Red Witch Alpine Swiss and
Stockyard Oatmeal Stout. Red
Witch was created specifically to pair
with the wines, beers, and spirits that
accompany the long nights of Carnival,
and it stands up incredibly well to the
stout. The Stockyard Oatmeal Stout
is creamy and lends notes of chocolate
and coffee, which really bring out
the full milk flavor of the cheese.
Favorite cheese + wine pairing:
Roquefort and Cabardes. While it
seems strange to pair a blue with
a red, the flavors of this tiny AOC
wine perfectly complement the
Roquefort. The wine smells and tastes
of rosemary, and I cant help but think
that the sheep producing the milk
for Roquefort are grazing on that
same rosemary since its so abundant
in that region. As the adage goes,
What grows together, goes together.

Dream cheese scenario: Hanging

out with master affineur Rodolphe
Le Meunier in Paris. Hes a bit
of a celebrity to us cheesemongers.
Ideally, we would take too many
shots of vodka (chased with
cornichons) and proceed to
turn the city upside down.
Best cheese to eat on its own:
Gruyere. Its so often used in
fondues, or thought of as a cheese
meant for melting, and while its
delicious this way, it has these
subtle nuances of milky, creamy,
nutty excellence that are so easily
lost to the palate if not eaten alone.
Favorite cheese fun fact: There is
an Italian sheeps milk cheese called
Pecorino Piacentinu allo Zafferano

thats infused with black

peppercorns and saffron. Allegedly,
this cheese has been made
since the 11th century and was
specifically infused with saffron
to cure the depression of the
Norman Count of Sicilys wife.
Fanciest cheese youve ever
seen: Cuise al Malto dOrzo

crusted with whiskey-soaked barley.
It can be a bit pricey, but the flavor

Dormer is an actressand a good onewhich
means shes prepared to do whatevers required
for a particular role. In the past, this has included
donning corsets for costume dramas like The Tudors
(in which she plays the doomed Anne Boleyn) and
Game of Thrones (in which she plays the put-upon
widow Margaery Tyrell); being directed by Madonna
in W.E., the 2011 biopic about Wallis Simpson;
and enduring perhaps more than her fair share of
on-screen, and corset-less, sex scenes, many of
which have subsequently found their way onto
YouTube. But she has never had to make drastic,
long-lasting changes to her appearancethat is,
not until she signed up for The Hunger Games:
Mockingjay - Part 1 (Part 2 follows with haste
next year), in which she plays Cressida,
a documentary filmmaker. My character
is tasked with packaging Jennifer Lawrence as the
poster girl for a revolution. Its pretty intense stuff.
She hopes that running around with her head
half-shaved will help challenge peoples perceptions
of her. Perhaps it will also challenge my own
perceptions of myself, she suggests ruminatively,
over a peppermint tea in a caf not far from her
southwest London home on a warm fall morning.
At first, she found the style liberating. But it also
made me realize just how much of a womans
identityher sense of attractivenessis wrapped
up in her hair. I dont know what men think of when
they look at a womans hair. Do they see the hair
before the face? She shrugs. It was definitely
an edgy moment when I first saw my head naked.
It got very cold. I had to wear hats.
Dormer, 32, was born in Reading, an unremarkable
satellite town outside of London that journalists seem

contractually obliged to remind everyone is the same place from which

Kate Winslet also hails. She was raised by her mother and stepfather,
a builder, and has a half sister seven years her junior. She says she spent
much of her childhood in her own highly imaginative head, and was prone
then, and still now, to thinking a lot, to philosophizing. When asked why
she became an actress, her response is to ask why I became a writer,
or why any of us become the things we do.
It used to amuse me when people asked what drew me to certain
roles, she says. I would be like, Fucking hell, mateI havent worked
in months! This is my job!
But it might not have been. Initially, she had planned to study history
at Cambridge University, but she didnt quite get the necessary grades.
Instead, she followed her heart to London. I was desperately in love at
the time, first love, and we all know what first love is like, dont we? He was
at university here, and I just wanted to be near this guy, because he rocked
my world. So I ended up studying drama nearby, and the rest is history.
At the utterance of this well-worn clich, she laughs, loudly, and in doing
so manages to draw every eye in the place toward her. But then its not easy
to overlook Natalie Dormer, the kind of actress who is entirely in possession
of the aura she exudes. She has an incredible face, an impish mixture of
Bjrk and Cate Blanchett, all high cheekbones and pixie nose, her eyes
almond-shaped and the color of a summer sky. Her hair, and especially
the way she tosses it from side to side as we speak, might well possess
aphrodisiac qualities. You sense she knows this.
She lives in London with her fianc, director Anthony Byrne, but has seen
precious little of him recently due to the requirements of her job: Parts 1 and
2 of Mockingjay were filmed back-to-back over a period of nine months. Its
an interesting dichotomy every actor struggles with: the professional and
the personal, she muses, adding, I complain about it all the time, but I get
a kick out of it as well. I must. I wouldnt be doing it otherwise, would I?
Recently, Dormer has been featured in several ones to watch lists
the consequence of appearing in a mega-franchise surrounded by big stars.
But this, she insists, is of more importance to her agents than herself. Were
it the other way around, her sanity might be compromised.
If you attach too much anxiety to contemplating that sort of thing,
you end up self-sabotaging, I think. You undermine yourself. Its important
to appreciate how the system works. This is a game, essentially, and
within that game you must carve out your own artistic integrity.
She laughs again. Thats the goal, anyway.

Its a chilly day in New York City and Hunter Parrishs mere presence is freaking the tourists
out for reasons you would not expect: Its not Weeds or The Good Wife fans asking him to
pose for selfies, or people recognizing him from his Broadway stints in Godspell or Spring
Awakening. No one is asking him to autograph an Its Complicated poster, either. Instead,
the 27-year-old is hunched in the cobblestone entry to the Irish Hunger Memorial in Battery
Park City, changing clothes between shots for his NYLON Guys fashion shoot. While the
passersby may be in shock, taking his clothes off is nothing new for the actor. After all,
Parrish did it in front of millions as part of his eight-season run on Showtimes Weeds. In
the last two seasons, I grew up as a man, so I think that helps fight the Oh, hes the guy
who takes his shirt offthats his skill, says Parrish later, sinking into an oversized charcoal
couch at the nearby Conrad Hotel. I dont think people look at Weeds and go, He was
just there to look pretty. At least I hope not.

To be certain, he is choosing
parts that dont require his abs
to be exposed, like his most
recent film, Still Alice, where he
plays the doctor son of Julianne
Moore, who struggles with early
onset Alzheimers. Just a few
months after that production
wrapped, Parrish took a road trip
with his husky, Knik (pronounced
Kay-nick, which means fire
in Inuit), from Los Angeles to
Portland, Oregon, where he
was planning on spending a few
months. As much as L.A. has
been kind to me, its not my
aesthetic, says Parrish. Portland,
with all of its trees, is more me.
So I planned to take the fall to
submerge myself in nature,
but I only got two weeks in.
Thats when he got the call that
he had won a coveted part in the
Kevin Bacon serial-killer drama
The Following, so he immediately
headed to New York to start
filming. Im one half of a Bonnie
and Clyde-type couple, so theres
lots of blood, he says with
a smile. I get to shoot people,
stab someone, and shove another
person off a roof. I enjoy exploring
that dynamic, because we all
have a bad streak in us.
Its hard to see that streak in
Parrish, though. The guy with the
boyish good looks big childhood
rebellion included what he calls
suburban rafting, which is taking
a full-size raft down the manmade rivers built in Plano, Texas
golf courses. While Plano is now
considered one of the wealthiest
areas in the country, when he was
growing up there in the 90s he
was part of the lower middle class.
There were kids that turned 16
and got brand-new BMWsthat

I WANT TO DO
SOMETHING LIKE
BON IVER DID,
WHERE HE WENT
UP TO HIS CABIN
AND WROTE.
was not my experience, he says
with a laugh. Although he always
felt supported by his parents,
he felt like an outsider at home
as well. Im the black sheep in
my family, he confesses. Its not
like theyre all doctors, but theyre
certainly more left-brained than
I am. I think acting was an outlet
for me growing up because at
home I always felt like, Where
do I fit in here? While his career
looks impressive on paper, it
wasnt as seamless of a success
story as it may appear. After
getting his start in acting at
age six in school and doing
local theater, his most pivotal
role in his teens was playing
a 60-year-old man in a production
of The Imaginary Invalid. It
solidified for him that he
wanted to be an actor, while
simultaneously scaring the crap
out of him. I skipped 30 pages
of the show and completely
embarrassed myself, remembers
Parrish. I was the lead, so I had
a cast of characters trying to pick
up the mess that I had put down.

When the show was over I was

crying in the corner.
That experience toughened him
up for Hollywood rejectionand
created more fodder for his music.
Parrish released a folksy rock EP
called Guessing Games in 2012,
which he now hears with a more
critical ear. It felt right at the time,
but two years later Im like, That
sounds like something from high
school. I do that when I see
episodes of Weeds, too. I think,
What kind of moron wouldve
acted so poorly? But thats good.
Theres always room to grow.
Parrish and Knik are constantly
singing around their L.A. house
(there are YouTube videos to
prove it), and songs are always
percolating in Parrishs head.
He next wants to concentrate
on how he can bring mandolins
and cellos into a song. I want
to do something like Bon Iver
did, where he went up to his cabin
and wrote, he says. Perhaps
after Parrish wraps his arc on
The Following, hell get back

weird science
THERES A METHOD TO ALFRED YANKOVICS
PARODY MADNESS. BY DREW TEWKSBURY.

In the golden age of MTV, Weird Al Yankovic

was the video king, poking fun at pop music
icons from Michael Jackson to Coolio. Now,
almost 30 years later, Yankovics still got it,
making viral videos that hit home in todays
celebrity-obsessed culture. His latest album,
Mandatory Fun, debuted at No. 1, the first time
since the Kennedy administration that a comedy
album has topped the charts. From his Tacky
take on Pharrell Williams to his grammatically
astute Robin Thicke send-up, Word Crimes,
Yankovics wit is as sharp as ever.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE

WHICH ARTISTS YOU WILL
PARODY? It comes down
to whether the song
has parody potential,
whether it has the right
kind of hook musically
or lyrically. It certainly
helps if the artist has a
big personality, tooan
iconic person who has
characteristics that are
easy to lampoon.

WHO ARE SOME ARTISTS

YOUVE ALWAYS WANTED TO
RIFF OFF OF, BUT HAVENT
HAD THE CHANCE? There
were certainly a few
who slipped through
the cracks, for one
reason or another.
Maybe the timing was
off, or maybe I couldnt
think of a cleverenough idea. Prince
is famously the
guy who said no.

THATS STRANGE. I JUST

REWATCHED PURPLE RAIN
AND REALIZED THAT PRINCE
IS BASICALLY A PARODY
OF HIMSELF. That movie
cant be any more
Prince-y.

WHAT INTERACTIONS DO
YOU HAVE WITH THE ARTISTS
YOU WANT TO PARODY?
Normally we dont
have much at allits

my peeps talking to
their peeps. A couple
of times I was told that
I would have to talk
to the artists directly.
So I was able to get
Pharrells personal
email addressIm not
at liberty to say how,
but to his credit, when
I contacted him, he
didnt say, Whered
you get this email
address? He couldnt
have been nicer. For
Iggy Azalea, I had to
fly to Denver where
she was doing a show.
TMZ says I ambushed
her, and thats not too
far from incorrect.
I introduced myself
and said, Hi. Id like
to do a parody of
your song Fancy,
but I dont want to do
it unless I have your
blessing. She looked
at the lyrics and said,
Looks good to me.
Then we did the song.

THE MUSIC VIDEO ERA OF

MTV IS LONG GONE. HOW DID
YOU SHIFT YOUR FOCUS?
MTV is kind of dead to
me at this point, and
me to them, Im sure.
The Internet is the new
MTV. It makes sense.
Its video on demand,
instead of waiting

three hours for your

favorite video to come
up in rotation. With the
Internet, its not just
what a dozen people
in a room at MTV think.
Now you put it out
there, and everyones
a judge or critic. If its
good, youll know.

LETS TALK ABOUT CURLS.

WHAT IS YOUR DAILY
HAIRCARE ROUTINE?
Occasionally I will
brush out my hair in
the shower, which is

a long process. I use

a lot of conditioner
and a large-toothed
comb. Whenever a
detractor in the press
has to point out that
I still have those bad
curls from the 80s,
I have to point out
that its bad natural
hair, not a perm.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR

MUSTACHE? SOMETIMES
ITS THERE, OTHER TIMES
ITS NOT. DOES ITS PERIODIC
EXISTENCE COINCIDE

WITH LIFE EVENTS OR

GEOPOLITICAL FACTORS?
It comes and goes.
Its wacky like that.

WHO IS NEXT ON YOUR LIST?

Everybody who hasnt
gotten the Weird Al

going to have to take

their time is coming.
