HYGIENE PROJECTS FOR COMMUNITY BASED VOLUNTEERS TRAINING.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Sunyani west District is one of the 27 Districts in the Brong Ahafo Region with a population of 93,392 and
women of reproductive age 23,162 expected pregnancies 3,736, expected deliveries of 3,736 and a
percentage WIFA of 24.8%. The district has five sub districts namely: Bofourkrom, Chiraa, Fiapre, Nsoatre
and Odumase.
Within the framework of WHOs definition of Health as a state of complete physical, mental and social
well-being and not merely the absence of diseases or infirmity reproductive health addresses the
reproductive processes, functions and system at all stages of life. Public health is to promote health, to
prevent diseases and to prolong the life through organized efforts of the society. Maternal Health care is a
concept that encompasses Antenatal, Delivery and postnatal care.
The health sector has a crucial role to play, through a range of actors, including governmental bodies, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector. The vision is to have well-informed community
Health Volunteers adopting healthy lifestyles physically and psychologically and supported by a responsive
health and health related sectors to serve as a link in their various communities to provide basic health care
to the people to improve the MDGs goal 4&5.
In view of this MAP International funded the three day intensive training full of practicals, group work
involving discussions and role plays.

2.0 OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING


The meeting started with an opening prayer by Mr. Stephen Tetteh, a Volunteer from Kobedi at 9: 45 am.
Welcome address was done by the Country Program Manager, Mr. Franklin Asou. He Welcomed and
thanked participants for honoring the call. He then briefed the house on the reason for the training and need
for all participants to fully commit themselves into the training to help achieve the organizational goals and
responsibilities.
OBJECTIVES:
It was intended that by the end of the training, Participants will be able to:
To equip participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to provide the required health care services.
To help prevent maternal and child morbidity and mortality by providing early interventions.
To enlighten participants on the role of an outreach worker

To imbibe in participants basic sanitation knowledge


To equip participants with knowledge on proper water management.

GROUP EXPECTATION FOR THE TRAINING


It was intended that by the end of the training, Participants will be able to:
To acquire knowledge on maternal and child health.
To be equipped with new skills to manage pregnant issues.
To acquire new skills to manage water and sanitation.
To acquire knowledge on how to counsel clients.
To get knowledge in caring for pregnant mothers and babies.
To acquire knowledge on the type of food for pregnant women.
To know the sickness and illness that can affect babies.
To know more about water and effects of unclean water to human life.
To know the benefits of hand washing and how to wash your hands.

Below is the list of participants drawn from four communities in the Sunyani West District namely;
Tumiamayenko, Kobedi, Timber Nkwanta and Abronye. In all, ten community Health Volunteers were
drawn from these communities.

4.0 METHODOLOGY
This was a three day intensive training filled with practical and group work. Materials such as booklets,
counselling cards, flip charts, family planning samples etc were used. Methods used were:

Power point Presentations

5.0. TRAINING OUTCOMES


A pretest was organized with participants writing two sets of questions on Maternal and child Health (10
questions) and twelve questions on Water Sanitation and Hygiene to test their knowledge.
