BelayingPin:Theseshortrodsofmetalorwoodarewedgedintotherailingofashiptosecurethe
linesfromtheboomsandsails.Thesesailsmustbefirmlyanchoredinplacetoproperlycatchthe
currentsofwildspaceandthephlogiston.Woodenbelayingpinscosttwocopperpieceseach,while
metalonescost2silverpieceseach.
Bells:Bellsareusedtosummonthecrewfrommealbreaks,shiftchanges,sleepperiodendings,or
crewmeetings.Shipstypicallyhaveuptosixbells.Theyareallcontrolledfromthenavigator's,
captain's,orthehelmsman'schamber.Below,alistofbellsisgivenwiththestandardmeaning:
1Bell:Shiftchange,Sleepperiodend.
2Bells:Mealsarebeingserved.
3Bells:Meetingonthemaindeck.
Constant:PlanetHo!SphereHo!IntruderAlert!
BoardingPlanks:Theseremovablewoodenplatformsarecommonlyusedduringboarding
actions.Insteadofswingingtotheenemyshipusingropesandlines.Theseplanksarelaidacrossthe
ships'railingtoformamakeshiftbridge.Thecrewthenboardstheenemycraftonthemtodobattle.
Iftheshipsmovetoofarapart,theboardingplanksallbacktothegravitywelloftheattackingship.
Boardingplanksare5feetwideand30feetlong,andcansupport1,000poundseach.Strongerones
areavailable,withspecialhooksandgrapples(grapplingbridges)butcostuptotentimesmore.
Booms,Sail:Boomsarelongsparsextendingfromthemaststosecurethebottomofthesail.
Withoutthebracingprovidedbythiswoodenspar,thesailwouldflapuselessly.Sailboomscost
dependsupontheirsize.Metalboomsarealsoavailable,butmayrequireanadditionalcrewmember
toman.Theycosttentimesasmuchastheirwoodencounterparts.
Buttons:Theseareneededforsailor'sclothing,especially,thosemadeofsailcloth.Whensailsare
worn,ripped,orotherwiserendereduseless,crewmembersaregenerallyallowedtocutthefabricinto
pantandshirtmaterial.Thismaterial,toostrongfornormalsewingmethods,isusuallyheldtogether
bysnaps,rivets,orbuttons.
Canvas:Canvasisthemainmaterialusedintheconstructionofsails.Whenitslifeasasail
(whetherseaorspace)isover,thecanvasisoftenusedasclothing.Thiswornandcomfortable
materialisoftenaprizedpossession,soughtafterbycrewmenandporttailors.
Thematerialissizedandrivetedtothespecificationsofthewearer.Commonly,theship'scarpenter
tailorstheclothingwhenhehastime.Thecarpentertendstomake10spforeachpairofpants,and8
silverpiecespershirt.Theclothnormallyfitssnugly,allowingthecharactertoperformduties
comfortably.(Someunpopularshipcaptainsselltheirwornsailstoporttailorsfor1sppersquare
yardinsteadofgivingthemtotheircrew.)
Crow'sNest:Thecrow'snestisasmallbasketbuiltnearthetopofthemainmast.Here,acrew
membercanstandandlookaboutforland(whentravelingonwater),crystalspheres,planets,and
otherships.Ifsomeoneisupinthecrow'snest,itishardertosneakuponacraft(acircumstance

GrapplingHook:Grapplinghooksareveryeffectivewhenusedtograpple(orpull)twoships
together.Theyareusefulinboardingenemyshipsorinriggingatow.Thefollowingrulescanbeused
forindividualcharactersusinggrapplinghooks.
Agrapplinghookrequiresamoveequivalentactiontorealin10feetofrope,whichthegrappling
hookisattachedto.Agrapplinghookhas20feetrangeincrement.
Iftheattackrollisa20whentryingtograppleaship,theplayerrollsagainandrollsanatural20a
randomlydeterminedcrewmemberaboardtheenemycraftsuffers1d6pointsofdamage,andthe
charactermustpullthegrapplinghookbackandtryagaintograppletheship(orwallorotherobject).
Anyothercriticalhitresultisignored.
Ladder:Laddersarecommonlyusedtoboardshipswhethertheyarelandingonwaterorland.
Withoutladders,itwouldtakeagreatdealoftimetoscalethemainmasttoenterthecrow'snest.
LifeBoats:Lifeboatsarehardshelledvehiclesdesignedforonepurpose:tobringtheoccupants
relativelysafelytothesurfaceofaplanetorarescueship.Thelifeboatfallstowardthenearestgravity
well(usingalifeboatclosetoastarcanhavenastyresults).Thelifeboatdescendsaccordingtothe
ruleslistedforlanding,butmayonlyland.Oncelanded,itwillneverflyagain.
Alifeboattakesupasmuchtonnageasonehalfthenumberofpeopleitcancarry.Alargelifeboat
occupies10tonsofcargospace(includingjettisonsforlaunching).Collapsibleversionsshrinkthis
requirementto1tonofstorage,butcollapsiblelifeboatsrequire2d4roundsofsetupbeforetheycan
belaunched.Collapsibleversionscostthreetimesthelistedprice.
LifePreserver:Lifepreserversareroundfloatationdevicesusedtorescueacomradewhohas
fallenoverboard.Thebasiccostoftheitemdoesnotincludearope,whichmustbeattachedbefore
thepreservercanbeused.
Inwildspace,thepreserveristhrownoutintothegravityplaneoftheship,whereitfallsupand
downacrossthegravityplaneuntilitiscaughtbythecrewmemberthathasfallenoverboardorcomes

MapCase:Mapcasesarecylindersofbone,ivory,orleatherthatcanholduptotworolledmaps
orsimilarpapers.Oncesealedinside,thepapersareimmunetowaterdamageandtakenodamage
fromspecialattacksaslongasthemapcasesurvives.
MooringBits:Mooringbitsareverysimilartobelayingpinsinfunction.Mooringbits,however,
areusedtosecureashiptoadock.Ashipneedsonemooringbitforevery25tons(orportionthereof)
ofdisplacement.Forexample,theHammership,a60tonship,requiresthreemooringbits.Without
therequirednumberofmooringbits,theshipcannotbesecurelyfastenedtothedock.Forexample,in
astorm,theshipwilltake02hitpointsforevery10minutespermooringbitmissing.
Netting:Shipswithlarge,opendecksareoftencoveredwiththick,twistedropesboundintoanet.
Thesenetsservetoprotectthecrewpartiallyfromcatapultfireandboardingfromotherships.Attacks
comingfromabovemustdestroythenetsfirstbeforehittingcrewmembers.Eachsectionofnettingis
5feetsquareand50hitpointstodestroy.Nettingreducesdamagefromcatapultsbyproviding
damagereduction5/.Typicallyaheavycatapultwilldestroya5feetsquaresectionofnetting
(othercatapulttypemayrequiremorethenonevolleytodestroythenetting,butmostvolleyswillat
leastmakeaholeinnettingtoallowamansizedcreaturetopassthrunetting).Againstsmallarrow
firethenettingprovidesatbestonequarterconcealmentbonus(10%chancetomiss).
Inboardingactions,boardersmustcutthroughthenettingbeforetheycanattacktheenemycrew.
Nettingcanbecutthesameasgrapplinglinesittakes10hitpointsminimumtocreateholeinthenet
foramediumsizedcreaturetowalkthru.Defendersunderthenettingcanattackboardersabovethe
nettingifthedefendersarearmedwithpiercingweapons.Thenettingiscomposedof120150feetof

bleedingandblisteringofthepalmsevenafterafewshortminutesofuse.Twicepentadbraidedfor

asthoughveryclose.Theoutermechanismisdifficulttoconstruct,andthespeciallensesinsideare
extremelyexpensiveandtimeconsumingtoproduce.
StarCharts:Thestarchartsofasystemvaryinpriceaccordingtohowwellthatsystemisknown
andvisited.Starchartsindicatethatlocationandrelativepositionofthevariousplanetsinthesystem,
