High bays built to heights of up to 30 m

are increasingly used to make full use of
the area available in deep-freeze storage
rooms. In these rooms, their height means
that thermal currents occur that normally
cause vertical temperature layering.
Besides this, in these large rooms that are
often up to 80 m long it is also difficult to
distribute the cold air throughout the
entire room. Uneven temperature distribution and product quality reduction are
the result. Even air distribution can only
be achieved with very high-powered fans
when the usual air-cooling technology is
used. The Gntner deep-freeze storage
room evaporator does not work against
thermal currents in the same way as conventional coolers. Instead it makes clever
use of the natural thermal currents: The
cold air is blown downwards at low
speed. There it spreads and forms a reservoir of cold air. The heat carried in from
the walls heats the air, which then rises
and is again sucked in by the air cooler
directly on the ceiling. Since the heat in a
deep-freeze storage room does not occur
everywhere but mainly forms on the
outer walls, linear temperature layering
across the entire room height does not
occur as one might expect. Rather, the
locally occurring warm air rises quickly
and forms a relatively thin warm layer
under the ceiling.
With simulation calculations and measurements it has been possible to show
that a temperature deviation of only
maximum 2 K occurs over the entire area
in which the deep-freezed produce is
stored.

Energy-saving operation
Since the Gntner deep-freeze storage
room evaporator supports the natural
thermal currents rather than working
against thermal currents, much lower air
speeds are possible than is the case with
the usual types of air coolers.

This enables slow-rotating fans to be

used. In order to compensate for the reduced k value arising from this, the coolers
must be designed with a somewhat larger
heatexchange area, but the fans require a
much lower drive power.
