Bossa nova, unique mixo f jazz and samba, celebrates 50 years this month with
shows by one of the genress pioneers, Joo Gilberto, who brought The Girl
from Ipanema to the World. The three concerts by 77-years-old Gilberto in Rio
and So Paulo sold out within and hour of going on sale Thursday, testifying to
the lasting appeal and inspiration of both the silky music and the singers
hypnotically breathy performance.
Gilberto the surviving member of the trio behind Bossa Nova that also
counted composer Tom Jobim and poet Vincius de Moraes has not sung in
public in Brazil for five years. His reputation, though has never diminished, ever
since August 1958 when his singular voice and guitar playing appeared on
Chega de Saudade (Enough Longing, or, more commonly in English, No More
Blues) a tune by Jobim and Moraes.
That was the first track to lay out the cool, intimate harmonies of Bossa Nova
that add complexity to sambas more basic rhythms, giving it a jazz evolution
whose impact has been felt over decades. US jazz greats Stan Getz and
Charlie Bird fell under its sway and added to its popularity.
But it was a 1962 worldwide hit by Gilberto, with his then-wife Astrud and Getz,
that became The Bossa Nova standard. Garota de Ipanema, was picked up by
many singers, including Frank Sinatra. In 1963, the English version of the song
raced up international charts. We only lost to Beatles. And there were four of
them, wryly remarked Jobim. Bossa Nova spread everywhere from the mid1960s, from Copacabana apartments to New York jazz clubs.
In Rio de Janeiro today, Bossa Nova has been supplanted by other genres,
notably other samba variations and US-style hip hop or rock. But it can still be
heard, a persistent note characterizing Brazils iconically beautiful seaside city
Today there are a lot more albums than 40 years ago. It Bossa Nova is nota t
the top of the charts, but it is still a style picked up by people of all ages, said
Ruy Castro,an author of several books on music. Lyra, the singer and composer
who appeared in Carnegie Hall 46 years ago, was less generous. If somebody
asks me today where they can hear Bossa Nova in Rio I say nowhere. The
music is more popular in Japan and Europe than in Brazil, he said.

COOKING UP A CARROT

Thanks to some stubborn scientists, agronomists and farmers, Brazil is

turning some of the most inhospitable regions of the tropics into a
cornucopia.
Much of the credit goes to the government-run agricultural-research
company, Embrapa, whose boldest work to date has been the handsome
Alvorada carrot.
In the steamy tropics, a carrots life is short and drab. Those that survive the
summer come up knobby (due to a carrot disease) and tinged green. After
experimenting for two decades, Embrapas garden-vegetable division came
up with the Alvorada carrot that grows fat and straight, and consistently
orange in color. But the Alvorada is not all good looks. It was built to
withstand diseases and pests that prosper in the heat and humidity of the
tropics. And it has 35 percent more carotenoids (a vitamin A precursor) than
varieties planted elsewhere in Latin American.
When Embrapa launched the carrot in 2000, scientists thought it would
sweep the market. It hasnt1. The Alvorada is heaper than imported carrots,
but far more expensive than the traditional varieties. And to most
consumers, cost is what counts. Brazilians dont even know yet what
carotene is, says Jairo Vidal Vieira, Embrapas carrot expert. Slowly, he
thinks, theyll come to realize the benefits of eating healthier. Ill bet my
career on it2, he says.
Adapted from Newsweek, july 7, 2003
The major difference between the Alvorada carrot and ordinary carrots lies in
their:
a) colour, smell and taste
b) smell, shape and cost
c) shape, colour and nutritional value
d) weight, appearance and cholesterol level
e) caloric value, vitamins and shape

Brazilians decode coffee genome

By Steve Kingstone
BBC correspondent, So Paulo
Super coffee could be around the corner Scientists in Brazil have
decoded the genetic structure of the countrys best-known product,
coffee.

The success of a two-year government project was announced on Tuesday

by the countrys agriculture minister. Roberto Rodrigues said an
extraordinary horizon had opened up - and the coffee would taste even
better as a result. He proclaimed that Brazil would use the genetic code to
create a super-coffee, richer in taste, more aromatic and resistant to disease
and frost
Competition boost
Suddenly, scientists know an awful lot about coffee in Brazil. Having studied
200,000 strands of DNA, they have identified 35,000 coffee genes, a
combination of which gives the drink its aroma and flavour. We are going to

create a super-coffee that everyone can benefit from eventually, Mr

Rodrigues told reporters in Brasilia.
He said this would be achieved naturally through crosspollination of coffee
plants and not through genetic modifications in a laboratory. If that boast
rings true, Brazil will move even further ahead of its competitors.
Already, the country accounts for a third of the worlds coffee production.
The government will not make these findings available internationally for at
least two years.

The international community will be informed of the results of the research
a) immediately.
b) briefly.
c) gradually.
d) shortly.
e) suddenly.

GRAND THEFT IDENTITY

Millions of people now have a new reason to dread the mailbox. In addition
to the tried-and-true collection of Letters You Never Want to See the tax
audit, the high cholesterol reading, the college-rejection letter there is now

the missive that reveals you are on the fast track to becoming a victim of
identity theft1. Someone may have taken possession of your credit-card info,
bank account or other personal data that would enable him or her to go on a
permanent shopping spree leaving you to deal with the financial, legal and
psychic bills. Deborah Platt Majoras got the pain letter recently, from DSW
Shoe Warehouse.
Hers was among more than a million credit-card numbers that the merchant
stored in an ill-protected database. So when hackers busted in, they got the
information to buy stuff in her name and 1.4 million other peoples names.
Its scary, she says.
Part of it is the uncertainty that comes with it, not knowing whether
sometime in the next year my credit-card number will be abused. Now she
must take steps to protect herself, including re-examining charges closely,
requesting a credit report and contacting the U.S. Federal Trade
Commission to put her complaint into its ID-theft database. The latter step
should be easy for her, since Majoras is the FTC chairman.
(Newsweek, September 6, 2005)
No final do texto:
"... since Majoras..."
"... uma vez que Majoras a presidente da FTC."
Assinale a alternativa que apresenta o uso correto do gerndio aps a
preposio to como em you are on the fast track to becoming a victim of
identity theft (ref.1).
a) I enjoy to becoming mature.
b) I object to becoming mature.
c) I need to becoming mature.
d) I hope to becoming mature.
e) I insist to becoming mature.
