The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees

(AUPE) and AgeCare Sagewood Seniors Community in Strathmore are facing mediation after failing to see eye-to-eye on a fair collective
agreement.
One-hundred-and-thirty nursing staff at Sagewood joined AUPEs many seniors care employees last August, when the workers decided to
form a union under the organization. As one
of three sites in the province to be organized
over the past year, a collective agreement is currently nonexistent.
While the parties have met over the last year,
local health-care workers recently held a peaceful rally to stop Sagewood from what they feel is
stalling to negotiate a fair agreement. However,
Michelle Pham, general manager at Sagewood,
said they have a good working relationship
with their workers and want to work together
with AUPE to come to an agreement a desire
AUPE said they have seen no evidence of.
Theyve stalled for months; theyve cancelled
many bargaining dates; they failed to disclose
relevant bargaining information; and they tabled proposals that fall short of other AgeCare
sites and refuse to negotiate compensations
with us, said Erez Raz, vice president for AUPE.
So I dont know how the employer is saying
theyre working together with us. Thats definitely not the case.
However, according to Sagewood, some progress had been made during the last bargaining
meeting by agreeing on some key collective
agreement clauses. Sagewood had requested
future bargaining dates, but said the union had
declined to provide further dates, just before
applying for mediation.
A collective agreement would outline terms
and conditions of employees and their workplace while meeting industry standards on issues such as wages and compensation. As the
AgeCare facility in Lethbridge just signed their
collective agreement, AUPE is currently bargaining with four out of their five AgeCare facilities
located in Brooks, Medicine Hat, Calgary, and
Strathmore.
But according to Pham the process will take
time to ensure a balanced agreement, but added both parties are eager to see a respectful
contract that meets the needs and obligations
of both.

Teddy bear picnic comes to Kinsmen Park

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

A new initiative is encouraging families to enjoy a relaxing afternoon by
taking part in a Teddy Bear Picnic, with
the stuffed bears being donated to the
Alberta Childrens Hospital.
The event, which is hosted by ReMax Landan Real Estate, will feature
fun activities for kids at Kinsmen Park
on June 6.
Were going to have guest speakers,
freezies and frisbees for the kids, said
Danielle Stahl, co-event organizer. Its
going to be a lot of fun.
Were asking people to, but not obligated to, bring new or gently used
blankets to sit on while theyre there,
new teddy bears, non- perishable items

and toiletries.
The toiletries and non-perishable
items will be donated to the Family and
Community Support Services (FCSS)
and the Wheatland Crisis Centre. The
blankets will be dropped off at the
Mustard Seed and the bears will go to
Alberta Childrens Hospital.
Stahl is hopeful that events like these
will promote the overall area and attract more festivities.
Its always nice to have more events
in Strathmore for families, she said.
Its something that we came up with.
Itll be nice to give a little and have an
event for the families.
There will be prizes for the colouring contest, with the poster available in
your local newspaper (May 22 issue of
the Strathmore Times, Page 20) to bring

with you before you attend. Extra copies of the newspaper are available at
the Strathmore Times office.
The Teddy Bear Picnic will take place
on June 6 at Kinsmen Park from 11 a.m.

Q: What recourse do I have for poor

service or overcharging?
A: The Alberta Funeral Service Regulatory Board
(AFSRB) is the governing body of funeral
practice in Alberta. If at any point you believe
you are being mistreated by a funeral home,
the AFSRB should be contacted. They will
investigate your claims to ensure that both
their standards, and the standards written in
Alberta legislation are being upheld. In the
funeral industry, due to the sensitive nature of
the business, ethical behavior is expected, and
legally required from every funeral service
professional. A funeral director, embalmer, or
entire funeral service business can lose their

Council approves $275,000 upgrades

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

With Lakeside Blvd. currently undergoing ineluctable construction, a lack
of a complete storm sewer infrastructure in the downtown area required
town council to consider Strathmores
future and dip into funds for an increased storm water mainline.
With heavy machinery currently tearing Lakeside Blvd. and 4th Avenue
apart for the reconstruction of the utility mains and roadway, the town decided to spend $275,000 to increase
storm water mainline sizing in Lakeside
Blvd. The upgrade would provide for
future extensions of storm sewer to the
nearby 6th Avenue and 5th Avenue. In
turn, expanding the storm main along
4th Avenue, would allow better storm
water management along the route and
permit a storm water facility expansion
for 2nd St. and 3rd St.
We are currently under construction
of the Lakeside Blvd. and 4th Avenue
project which includes replacement
of the existing underground utilities,
said Gord Elenko, director of engineering for the Town of Strathmore. For
the storm sewer, the project included
replacement only of the existing aged
storm sewer. Having the storm sewer
allows us to have options to how the
water is managed. Not all of it has to be
kept on site. You can have controlled
releases and other things like that,
which developers then can use as options.
The current storm sewer design was
justified based on pipe sizes for mains
and the Kinsmen Lake outfall. However, since then, the pipe size of the outfall to Kinsmen Lake was deter-mined
to be much smaller than originally anticipated and, therefore, under capacity
for the current design.
With an increase in development in
the downtown area and plans for greater density, most developments would
be required to incorporate alternatives
to manage storm water on site - an option that can often prove costly. Such
alternatives include rain gardens, bio

swales, and other surface storage.

While Councillor Bob Sobol was concerned that the project was not included in the original design, Elenko remarked that the cost seemed to be the
primary driver behind the storm sewer
having been left out in the design. The
Lakeside Blvd. and 4th Avenue project
was previously postponed when its
cost of over $6 million was deemed too
substantial for the town in 2014. The
project in 2015 proved beneficial for
the town, with the project currently estimated to cost $3.45 million.
The project approval being substantially less than it was originally, we
actually potentially have room in the
budget, said Elenko. So wed be going
over budget, but well within the original scope that we had.
Administration outlined four possible options for dealing with the storm
water infrastructure. Council had the
choice to continue with the existing
design by replacing the existing storm
sewer only and therefore dealing with
limited storm sewer capacity. Option
two would be a small upsize of the existing storm sewer; however the department identified some constraints within
the existing capacity. With an attached
price tag of $175,000, council also had
the chance to increase the storm water
mainline sizing in Lakeside Blvd. for future extensions of storm sewer into 6th
Avenue, 5th Avenue, and 4th Avenue. In
the end council decided on option four,
which, while more expensive, would
install the greatest infrastructure size
and thus prevent further reconstruction
on Lakeside Blvd. in the future. The
outfall replacement would also be upgraded for ultimate flow.
However, councillors raised several concerns regarding the WID canal,
the lake, and the budget. Administration assured council that the canal not
pose any concerns, while option four
would mean the lakes outfall would be
increased to the park and not into the
lake.
Council decided to include option
four as a scope change to the project
on May 20.

in the long term. A few tips on treating a sunburn:
Move to a cool place; have a cool shower then apply

can take an age-appropriate dose of ibuprofen to help
with the inflammation and pain. Best way to prevent
a sunburn: use a good sunscreen and avoid those hot

a hose, if our blood pressure gets too high, it can
damage the hoses carrying the blood around our

and stroke as well as cause damage to our kidneys.
Men, if you havent had your blood pressure checked
lately, get it done soon.
Its been said that 60% of Alzheimer case are

Local organizations band together for seniors

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

A lack of organization, collaboration, and scheduling,
concerning last years Seniors Week, were active motivators behind the decision
of a handful of organizations
to work together and create
an exciting program-packed,
fun-filled week for seniors
this year. As a result, seniors
will have the opportunity to
take part in twice as many
programs as before.
Rather than compete with
other local groups for space
and dates, numerous organiWere Your

same goal celebrating seniors.
Unlike last year, where the
plans had to come together
quickly, the committee has
been hard at work for the
past three months, ensuring
this years event will be even
bigger and more successful

than before.
It was kind of thrown on
our laps last year, and we
had a lot of overlap of too
many things going on on a
certain day, said Dahrlyne
Knaus, FCSS Programmer,
who realized organizing
meetings and spreading out
the activities would prove
more beneficial to seniors.
I found it a very easy
group to work with, because
we all had the same common
goal. So it was very easy to
juggle things. Because we
realized last year we didnt
spread it out as much as we
wanted to, we all knew that
going in and that was our
goal. Everybody pitched in
and did their part, and it was
a very easy collaboration this
year.
Starting on June 1, seniors will have a chance to
partake in 20 different programs including a free yoga
class, pancake breakfast, and
cribbage tournament. The

also approached and will be teaching
seniors how to play shuffleboard and
bocce ball.
Furthermore, seniors will have the
opportunity to learn how to protect
themselves against scams, shred confidential documents, and leave their
handprint on the generations banner.
Partnering on the project, Hope
Bridges and the Strathmore Regional
Arts Collective (SRAC) are encouraging families to come out and leave their
mark on the banner, that will then be
displayed at various downtown locations throughout the week.
With different colours we are creating generation trees with our handprints, said Wanda Reinholdt, Hope
Bridges Coordinator and vice-chair of
SRAC. Seniors make up a part of the
target population that we want to reach.
They have families and contacts as well
that they can bring. Our involvement is
creating this banner so we encourage
seniors to bring out their families.
The art project is one of several anticipated highlights, and is featured for
the first time this year. According to
Carmen Erison, assistant director to library services at the Strathmore Municipal Library, the collaboration allowed
for better advertising, organization, and
an increase in programs.
While at least 12 organizations were
instrumental in bringing Seniors Week
to fruition, members from Alberta
Health Services, Bridging the Gap,
Happy Gang, FCSS, Strathmore Municipal Li-brary, Hope Bridges, and Growing Families were active on the committee.
We always knew that several different organizations wanted to do something to celebrate this week, said Erison. Theres a lot of us that are doing
programs, and thats when we thought
in-stead of us stepping over each other,
fight for space, and everybody having
their programs run at the same time,
lets form a committee so we can work
together to make the week as great as
it can be.
Seniors Week runs from June 1-7.

Rosebud Fellowship work bee

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER

Rosebud Fellowship invites friends
of Rosebud to a work bee, June 13.
Volunteers will assemble picnic tables
and construct a large gazebo overlooking the river. Theyll enjoy a free breakfast and lunch together, and, at a twofor-one rate, will be invited to attend
Rosebud Theatres Wizard of Oz that
evening.
LaVerne Erickson, founder of Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA), said work
bees have been an important part of
RSA life since its developing years.
Thats how those good friendships
developed, by people volunteering, he
said. Its really a part of rural living,
working together and leaving things
for the next generation.
For this occasion, Wheatland County
has already demonstrated that cooperation and forward-thinking by permitting the gazebo to be built on county
land, and the Rosebud Community Enhancement Society has provided building materials.
Furthering that sense of community,
work bee volunteers will have the opportunity to become members of the
newly-revitalized Rosebud Fellowship.
The Fellowship has existed since before the current RSA was established,
but it became a quiet partner, Erickson said, when the school structure
changed to that of a governance board.
They feel its time to reawaken the Fellowship because it still serves an important role.
The constitution of the Rosebud
Fellowship provides a home for the
alumni and also a home for the staff,
Erickson said.
It gives them an official channel to
communicate, share career and educational opportunities, and promote each
others work.

their Enforcement Order
against the Strathmore

was produced.

Despite their engagement in a legal battle with
the Town of Strathmore over their groundwater
well usage, a local hotel was recently challenged
by the Alberta Environment Sustainable Resource
Development with an enforcement order to stop
diverting the water, for a lack of licensing. However, the order was quickly withdrawn when the
hotelier was able to provide documentation of an
existing license - much to the towns disapproval.
Mohinder Singh Gill, owner of the Howard
Johnson Hotel in Strathmore, appealed the order
and was able to track down the original license to
his well that states it was issued to White Wezel
Enterprises Ltd. in 1993 and does not expire.
Were going through quite a bit right now with
all the bad press and having them publish an article in the Calgary Herald saying we dont have a
licensed well, when we did have a licensed well,
said Paul Gill, manager of the Strathmore Howard
Johnson and Mohinder Gills son.
My father asked them to help him locate the
original well license and he got absolutely no
help from anyone. He asked a ton of people for
help. He wasnt the original owner. We bought
the building in 1998, so theres a 20-year period
where one owner had it.
Gill was required to find the original paperwork
through much research and online searches, as
the original document was not in his possession.
AESRD withdrew the Water Act Enforcement order, within days of its submission. However, Gill
received a letter a few weeks later stating that the
Town of Strathmores legal representation had
contacted AESRD requesting that they not withdraw their order. In a letter, AESRD responded
that the appeal is now closed, and there is nothing before the board to suggest the license is not
valid.

Linda Nelson, deputy CAO for the Town of

Strathmore, confirmed that the town had sent a
letter to AESRD but was unable to comment further due to legal ramifications. She added, however, the license is only a minor part of the issues
the town and the hotel are currently facing.
Strathmore passed the Water Utitlities Bylaw in
2012, shortly after connecting to the City of Calgarys regional water line. The bylaw states that
no business from a premise located on land lying along the water main should be supplied by
a well, spring, or other source of water not connected to the towns water system.
The town spends over $2 million on operational
water and sewer services costs, with an additional $800,000 annual cost to Calgary. The Howard
Johnson, formerly known as Wheatland Inn, is
estimated to consume $20,000 a year. While Gill
is hooked up to the towns system without using
it, he has been accused of picking and choosing
his services - private water and public sewage.
However, Gill said its his statutory right under
the Water Act to continue using his well-water as
long as it is deemed of high quality. According to
Paul Gill, the water is being tested once a week
through Alberta Health Service and the quality
has never raised an issue.
Now with this new information of us having
a well, we have quite a bit of proof, said Paul
Gill. Were going to go ahead and fight them. Its
just a matter of where we stand, but now that we
have Environment Canada - weve settled that we have a bit more leverage in our fight with the
town.
According to Gill, the situation is having a negative effect on their business, and the establishment
is even considering changing their name.
The Town of Strathmore and the Howard Johnson Hotel will be back in court on Sept. 22 where
the town is seeking legal assistance to have the
business connect to its water services.

Building a bright future by fixing cars

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

The Harvest Healing Churchs mechanic program hopes to teach kids mechanical skills while
giving back to the community.
The new program was the idea of the churchs
Pastor Elizabeth Karp and is run by Don Howe, a
mechanic and church member.
Its still a long ongoing thing, but Elizabeth
had this vision of the shop and of course Im a
gear nut, says Howe.
Its too bad that it took us a bit to get it off
the ground but we have two kids right now that
come in on Saturdays and we do some stuff together.
The idea of the program is to teach children
who want to learn mechanic skills but have no
place to go. Many schools do not offer the kind
of mechanics program that the church is offering.
Fourteen-year-old Tristan Senft is one of two
children in the program, since it launched in
February. He has learned a lot of things that he
wouldnt have learned in school.
I have learned to take off the hood and the

body of a surrounding of the car. The metal can

come out, how to put the box back in, how to
take apart the motor and get it ready for the next
body to come on, says Senft
They work on anything that is motorized, just
as long as they can learn from it. If the vehicle
cannot be fixed, it is taken to a scrap yard in
Calgary and the money is used for activities for
the kids. People can also donate vehicles to the
program and apply for a tax reduction.
If theres something thats worth fixing then I
teach the kids a little bit and then we do some
detailing, a good clean on the inside, do the mechanical work then I get it re-certified at a shop
I used to work for in Strathmore. Then we sell it
maybe to a needy family.
Currently Howe and his students are working
on a 1950 Fargo truck. They took the cab off and
made it into a street rod, which will be Pastor
Elizabeths truck.
Howe hopes more kids will join the program. It
is open to girls and boys with no age restriction.
Along with learning about motorized vehicles the
youth will also enjoy activities like camping and
go-karting.

Open farm days coming to Strathmore

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The third annual Alberta Open Farm Days is
coming later this summer to the Strathmore area
on August 22 and 23.
Open farm days is an opportunity for urban
and rural people alike to understand and get to
know rural Alberta, not only whats being produced and by whom, but also seeing the terrain
and being able to tour the country side in other
communities, said Tim Carson, CEO of Alberta
Association of Agricultural Society in a phone interview.
This will be a great opportunity for people to
be educated on day-to-day operations of farmers
and ranchers.
We have the opportunity across the province to
have people who are producing products on their
land. Everything from bison and cattle ranches to
traditional farms, crops, oil, seeds and even stables, petting zoos and organic operations to market themselves and bring awareness to what their
producing across the province, said Carson.
The agricultural industry is stewarding the
land and probably making some of the best food
in the world.
He added that this event always has the possibility of expansion.
I believe here, its a real opportunity to grow
as an event. We had a little over 60 farms last year
that participated and had totaling farm sales at
$40,000, said Carson.
I believe there is an opportunity to grow that

economic base on tourism and market sales.

Carson is hopeful that they will exceed the
$50,000 mark this year.
The Rocking R Guest Ranch in Strathmore will
host the culinary event called the BBQ in the
Badlands this year and there will be plenty of
activities planned.
We had no participation in the past. Were currently in the process of building a wedding venue
at the ranch, so by the time Open Farm Days happens, our new tent will be in place, said Terri
Kinsman, owner of the Rocking R Guest Ranch.
We thought that would be a good opportunity
to participate in Open Farm Days. We know how
important culinary tourism is and attracting people to Alberta,
Kinsman says this will be a greatest way to
showcase the areas food producers.
Its a good opportunity to showcase Strathmore, perhaps putting Strathmore on the map in
the future, said Kinsman.
It is a chance to highlight local food producers
and Tera (Spyce of Community Futures in Strathmore) is doing a great job to attract those people.
She also stated that if a producer had donated
product, that there would be the possibility of a
trade show that they can showcase their crop at.
Other events could include live entertainment,
roping sessions, hayrides and putting a local winery in the spotlight.
The barbeque will begin at 4 p.m. on August 22.
The deadline for farmers and ranchers to register is May 30 and can find more information at
albertfarmdays.com.

Congratulations graduates!
KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

At this time of year, throughout our riding of
Crowfoot, students are graduating! We should all
take a few moments to congratulate and encourage our younger generation by assuring them of
the importance of their education. Students need
to know that the investment of time and effort
they spend on their studies pays off.
I always try to remind my young constituents
that Albertans enjoy some of the best prospects
for a bright future. We are living in an era where
our province is known as one of the most prosperous in our nation. While we are fortunate to
have abundant gas and oil reserves in our province, Alberta offers many other opportunities in
various sectors as well.
For example, economists say that the best longterm forecasts are for the agriculture industry. This
is especially true for our agricultural sector in Alberta. We experienced a bumper crop two years
ago and the forecasters predict more to come.
This is a sector that is attractive to many graduates. Young people who have studied agriculture
are anxious to apply their high-tech knowledge
to the traditional challenges ranchers and farmers
face every day.
As well, our tourism industry continues to grow
in leaps and bounds. As your Member of Parliament, I am being invited to more and more events
that are created by the folks around our riding
that are building our tourism sector. We see this
promising source of income grow from the smallest villages to our larger population centers. Again,
we see opportunities for our graduates to prosper
and develop what we have right here at home.
Our Government is working to help families
have the resources to raise their children. Canadians know that the best people to decide what is

best for their family is mom and dad, not Ottawa

bureaucrats. That is why we have put an additional $6,600 in the pockets of the average family of
four since 2006.
We have introduced many other measures help
students as well. We are expanding the eligibility for low and middle-income Canadians to access Canada Student Grants for short duration
programs; enhancing access to post-secondary
education by eliminating in-study income in the
assessment process for the Canada Student Loans
program; and, making Canada student loans work
for families by providing $119M over four years,
starting in 2016-17, to reduce the expected parental contribution under the Canada Student Loans
needs assessment process.
As part of Canadas Economic Action Plan over
the past years, our Conservative Government is
helping ensure Canadians have the right skills for
the jobs. Were delivering the Canada Job Grant,
which helps ensure our work force obtains the
skills employers are seeking. It provides a maximum of $5,000 per person towards training at an
eligible training institution. We have already created the Tradespersons Tools Deduction and the
Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit and extended the fees eligible for the Tuition Tax Credit
to include the costs of certification tests required
by a tradesperson in Canada. We are working to
create opportunities for apprentices by making it
easier and more practical to get the experience
needed. We are trying to help our graduates find
a good job.
It is a great time to be graduating in Alberta.
Congratulations graduates and Best Wishes!

Come find your treasure

ANDREA ROBERTS

The Strathmore United Church will
host a Treasure Sale on Saturday, June
13, adding a whole new twist to their
thrift sales and raising money for a
charity in Guatemala.
The charity, Solidarity for Women, is
situated in Guatemala City and focuses primarily on women and childrens
health. The clinic, which was started
by Rosa Escobar, provides a medical
outreach to impoverished areas while
offering medical assistance during national disasters in the area.
The organization also has a program
where underprivileged women in the
community have a chance to receive
training to become licensed practical
nurses (LPN). Upon graduating from
the two-year course the women may
find work in hospitals, clinics and
home-care all positions that are usually
accompanied with a decent wage. How-

ever, the opportunity to train costs $100

US per woman for one year.
To help with the cause, the Strathmore United Church Sale will include
items from their boutique, many of
which are deemed valuable or a collectable. These are items that people donated with hope that someone would
see it as a treasure. Such items include
fine china, silverware, jewelry and.
One mans junk is another mans
treasure, says Peggy McLean, one of
the United Church members helping to
organize the event.
These pieces were gifts from people
who wanted them to find a better home
where they will be used.
In July, the churchs Reverend Pam
Scott will visit the clinic in Guatemala
to see the charity first-hand while getting some hands-on experience.
The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at the United Church in the foyer. The
community is asked to please donate
any unwanted treasures before the sale.

Childrens Choir sings for Brentwood Elementary

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

The well-known Cantare Childrens
Choir showcased their talent for Brentwood Elementary students on May 21,
as part of their annual spring tour.
The children, aged 8 to 11 years, are
part of an ensemble of the choir called
Contiga. While the choir had already
performed in Langdon before singing
at Brentwood Elementary, some Strathmore students had the chance to come
to the front and join in for the singing
of Donkey Riding.
I was thrilled to have Cantare come
and present a concert at Brentwood,
said Carolyn Steeves, the Brentwood
Elementary music teacher. My four
children all sang in Cantare and former
Brentwood students sang in the Al-

berta Childrens Choir when Catherine

Glaser-Climie was the conductor. Cantare is an exemplary choral program in
Calgary, and it was a pleasure to have
them come and share their music with
our students.
In 1997, Catherine Glaser-Climie
founded the choir, to fill a void by offering a community-based choir for
children in the city. Children attending schools all over Calgary take part
in the choir, which just completed its
18th season.
Despite focusing on their own concerts, the choir also occasionally works
together with the Calgary Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Calgary Opera.
We are so thrilled to be here at
Brentwood School, said Catherine Glaser-Climie the founder and artistic director of the Cantare Childrens Choir.

We know of the exceptional music

program that happens here. It is a thrill
for us to be here and sing for an audience of children who can appreciate
the level of excellence that our children
present.
The choir went on to perform at Trochu, before finishing their tour in Camrose.

Congratulations to

Leah (Daughter of
Ron and Cathy Brown
of Victoria B.C.) and
Kyle (Son of Larry
and Debby Janzen of
Namaka, AB) on their
upcoming marriage.
Their wedding will take
place this summer.

- legal protection for those

assisting injured, incapacitated, or ill individuals - for
AHS direction, thus ensuring complete liability coverage for its volunteers.
Prior to Nov. 5, when the
Town of Strathmore council
approved the changes upon
AHS request, the service
provided by the volunteers
assured medical calls by
911 dispatched were tended
to when no EMS unit was
available. According to Bas
Owel, captain of the Strathmore Fire Department, the
service was provided without medical direction and
had never been formerly
documented.
The main thing with our
joint agreement before, was
on fire calls we would go to
a fire call and ensure that
the fire fighters were safe
and our crews would assess
them if they got too tired to
ensure they were still safe
to continue fighting, said
Kevin Link, operations manager with WADEMSA. In
return, they didnt invoice
us if they came and helped
us, so I think it was kind of
an unwritten rule. Thats a
20-year-old agreement.
When AHS assumed the
responsibility of EMS governance and extended medical direction to municipalities within the Calgary zone
at no addition cost, the
Strathmore Fire Department
felt they were unable to refuse the offer. Now, along
with boundaries, guidelines,
and protocols for the fire
departments, Medical First
Responders will be able to
provide medical aid under
the provincial Medical First
Response (MFR) program.
We are now in a position
that were going to be offering medical first response
when an EMS unit is not
available, said Bas Owel,
captain of the Strathmore
Fire Department.

Our intention was not

to replace the ambulance
service in town. We have a
class A ambulance service
with three full-time staffed
ambulances. Were not there
to chase an ambulance to a
medical call. Were there to
provide a service when they
are not available due to call
volumes.
The provincial model, developed by Alberta Health
Services and Alberta Health,
serves as a platform for fire
department to provide enhanced patient care as well
as medical response.
Under the new protocols,
the volunteers, which have
standard first aid training
and Heartsaver CPR, are required to respond to a call
within 15 minutes when an
ambulance is absent.
Since Jan. 1, the Strathmore Fire Department has
observed a six per cent increase in call volume, having responded to six medical calls, four of which were
for medical first response.
However, Link said the
changes will have no effect
on the residents of Strathmore or surrounding areas.
This is a change to benefit the fire department more
than it is to benefit the patients, because weve always
used them, Link said. The
people that are benefiting, is
the fire department because
now they have more coverage through AHS. Theyre
there to help out when we
dont have the resources to
do the job, absolutely.
Medical First Responders
provide medical assistance
until the arrival of an ambulance, and do not transport
the patient. In keeping with
the common procedure, the
fire department will continue to automatically attend to calls regarding motor vehicle accidents, burns,
building collapses, electrocutions, and fires.

Regional royalty seeks national title

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Fortuitously, when Strathmore hosted Albertas very first girls pageant
four years ago, Avery Biswanger the
local beauty queen who was recently
crowned regional royalty for Central
Alberta was born into the world. But
what the four-year-old lacks in size,
she makes up in confidence and her
larger-than-life personality.
Coincidentally, those key traits paved
the way to her recent title, thats providing the youngster with an opportunity to compete in the National Canadian Girl Teen and Miss Scholarship
pageant in July.
The pageant, which prides itself on
being completely natural and focuses
on its contestants self-esteem, personality, and public speaking, will reward
10 girls with up to $10,000 in scholarship money financial support that
would inch Avery closer to her current
aspirations of becoming a veterinarian.
However, to represent the region in
Vancouver, Avery is reaching out to the
community for donations to cover the
$525 participation fees, whch does not
include additional travel and accommodation costs.
You think of Toddlers & Tiaras and
spray paint, but weve never done that
to her, said Sarah Biswanger, Averys
mother. They get dressed up and have
nice hair, but when they do their public
speaking they all have the same Tshirt and white pants. Its just focused
on them and not what theyre wearing.
This one focuses on growth and public
speaking and everything else, as well
as helping out.
While Avery has already competed
in nearly 10 pageants since she started participating one-and-a-half years
ago, the national event with its fastapproaching deadline is accompanied
with its own set of challenges.
According to Megan McKinnon, the
current International Junior Miss Teen
and Averys pageant coach, training for
the weekend-long event will require
more preparation than was previously
necessary.
As Avery will be four years old at
the time of the pageant, she will be required to give an introduction and an
interview. Upon making it into the Top
15, she would also have to participate
in an on-stage question.
I actually just recently started coach-

ing her and she managed to actually win the very first
pageant she went to for National Canadian Girl, said McKinnon, owner of Megasupreme Team. She has an amazing
personality. Having only had one or two coaching sessions
with her and having her go and win, made me really proud
as a coach.
Along with an estimated 100 girls from across Canada, the
contestants in the four/five-year-old category will be expected to answer age-appropriate questions.
Liz McKinnon, national director of National Canadian Girl
Teen and Miss Pageant, said expectations at this age are low,
but judges will focus on whether the girls can speak fluently,
show personality during their beauty or casual walk, and
whether eye contact is established.
It doesnt matter if theyre in a $20 dress from Target or if
theyre in a $200 dress from a bridal shop, were just looking
for are they well put together, said McKinnon. We have so
many success stories of girls who have been bullied and they
do this and find this whole new group of friends. The girls
just click together really well.
Until the reigning National Canadian Toddler Miss Central Alberta makes her way to British Columbia, her new
responsibilities include three local appearances and some
volunteer work. According to Biswanger, fundraising efforts
and volunteer hours are currently geared towards the Alberta Childrens Hospital. A cause, Biswanger said, teaches
her daughter about the hardships other children her age are
faced with.
To sponsor Avery for the title of Tiny Miss National Canadian Girl, she has an online campaign on legup.ca under
Getting Avery to the National Canadian Girl Pageant.

Conditions revealed behind

the seizure of more than 60
animals; society revamped
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associated Editor

Just weeks after two founding members and an animal
rescue society in Gleichen
were convicted of cruelty
charges, officials provide insight into the investigation
and circumstances behind
the seizure of more than 60
animals - conditions a newly
revamped society is working
hard to avoid in the future.
Co-founders Debra and Edward Michel pled guilty on
May 7 to charges of allowing
cats and dogs in their care
to be in distress and failing
to provide adequate care for
ill or wounded animals. The
Oops-a-Dazy Rescue and
Sanctuary Society also pled
guilty to permitting animals
to be in distress and received
a $10,000 fine. Since then,
the society has undergone
a transformation, electing
a new board, revising their
policies and procedures, and
seeking the expertise of a
veterinarian.
While the sanctuary is no
longer in operation - due to a
court order that prohibits the
Michels from owning more
than a combined five animals - a veterinarian report
accompanying an agreed
upon statement of fact, reveals a property manifested
with dog fights, disease, and
inadequate use of space.
Its hard for me to imagine that someone staying at
the property would think
that the situation was acceptable, said Roland Lines,
communications
manager
with the Alberta SPCA. The
floods may be responsible
for an increase in the number of animals they had, but
they had the opportunity to
surrender animals to us or
other agencies if they had
too many. And they didnt
take advantage of that.
The Alberta SPCA received
two calls from different individuals towards the end of
May last year, both claiming
to have seen a large number of dogs and cats on the
property. One individual had
recently adopted one of the
dogs and reported wounds
on the animal, while the other spotted an animal carcass
on the property.
Upon inspection of the
property, officers described

the area where the dogs

were kept as cov-ered in
animal feces, garbage, and
broken furniture. The investigation found the dogs were
not segregated, and showed
signs of packing and aggressive behaviour. Some of the
animals were also injured,
and according to the veterinarian report, a cat and a
dog were found deceased on
the property.
As had previously been
reported, all 19 cats faced
euthanasia, having been
chronically affected to varying degrees with upper respiratory disease. The 42
dogs were treated for numerous injuries and diseases,
and were rehabilitated back
to the Oops-a-Dazy society,
who found foster homes for
the canines.
The society, which has
nearly 40 active foster families, is now making sure the
animals are placed into proper care through inspections
and vetting, and will only
accept new animals when a
foster family is already available. Besides looking into
upgrading their policies and
procedures, the society is
also revising some of their
programs, one of which was
the sanctuary program.
Our concentration now
is really more about quality
care than the quantity of animals that are coming in, said
Michelle Krusk, who accepted the position of chair for
the Oops-a-Dazy Rescue and
Sanctuary Society in August
2014. We want to make sure
that we have really good regulations around animal care.
We are right in the midst of
revamping our policies and
procedures. Its a lot of work
and a huge undertaking. Its
definitely something were
working diligently towards.
While Krusk added a fine
is always difficult for a charity to receive, she agreed with
the decision and accepted
the penalty as a condition
for the charity to continue
operating. Acknowledging
the court order, she said
the society is mindful of the
terms, and the Michels are
not currently being utilized
as a foster home, nor are
they involved in any decision-making processes. The
society has a year to pay the
fine.

County stays at current weight for heavy trucks

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Actions spoke louder than works on
May 19, when Wheatland County council lost the vote to increase the weight
restrictions on Tri-drive and tractor
trucks.
Council was asked to consider changing the weight limit to 23,000kg from
21,000 kg, raising red flags with some
councilors about the possible damage to
county roads.
Wheatland County Reeve Glenn Koester, Councillor Rex Harwood, and Councillor Ben Armstrong voted in opposition of the motion, ultimately resulting
in a lost vote with the absence of Councillor Don VanderVelde.
Although
county
administration
hadnt noticed any additional damage to
the roads with 23,000 kg, council had
discussed the option of singling out certain roads through a ban that could have
repercussions for agricultural producers.
If we do that were going to hear a
real outcry from some of our rural agri-

culture producers, said Councillor Ben

Armstrong. If we give preference to
farmers, what are we setting ourselves
up for? A lot of the roads out there were
built for single axle and some of them
tandem axle, they werent built for these
huge loads that are going over them.
However, county transportation staff
felt if a ban is a consideration, then it
would need to be placed on the whole
county a view that was not shared by
all councilors.
Every year we have a list of roads
that are banned, said Councillor Brenda
Knight. Im not sure I like the blanket
idea. I think that if there are specific
roads that are damaged, then they can
be banned and added to the list in the
spring.
The request came before council as
Tri-Drive trucks and truck tractors are
becoming more common in the county, and removing the weight restriction
would create ease of travel while providing consistency for commercial and
farming industries.
While council did not budge on the

weight restriction, companies may exceed the limit by applying to the county
for an exemption allowance. Yet, some
councillors felt those carrying the extra
weight would find ways around the bylaw to travel on county roads.
This has always been a big issue,
said Councillor Alice Booth, who voted
in favour of increasing the limit. Being
a trucker, we went to Alberta Transportation and the government would override the county. They will still be hauling the weight. Us coming in saying we
are going to make this permanent, they
are just going to get the permit from the
provincial government.
According to administration, the surrounding municipalities are currently
following the permitting guidelines
and regulations set out under the Traffic Safety Act for weight of commercial
vehicles.
Alan Parkin, the chief administrative
officer, does not see a change in weight
in the foreseeable future. As the Motor
Transport Bylaw will not see an increase
on their weight restrictions, Wheatland
County roads will remain at a weight
limit of 21,000 kg.

on life, psychologists say. According to the Daily
Mail, more than 40,000 people submitted their
birthdates to researchers and rated the degree to
which they saw themselves as lucky or unlucky.
The percentage of lucky births reportedly rose
during the spring, peaked in May, and dropped
off again in Autumn.

Residents flock to second annual

Photography Tips workshop
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Back by popular demand, Hope
Bridges is once again offering residents
the opportunity to make the most out
of their devices through their workshop Photography Tips. With participants having learned how to take great
photos on any camera last year, ranging from your iPhone to an advanced
camera, spots are quickly filling up.
The number of participants signed
so far has already surpassed last years
turnout. The workshop, taught by
Rockyford resident Kenzie Kettenbach,
encourages residents to learn how to
take beautiful pictures regardless of
their skill level and equipment.
The Photography Tips is for anybody, said Wanda Reinholdt, Hope
Bridges coordinator. Photography
Tips is not about becoming a great
photographer, because there is a lot
of technology and technical stuff that
goes with that. Our Photography Tips
is very different. Its about using what
you have. You dont have to go out
and grab a camera. You can bring your
phone, and it can be your flip phone.
If thats what you have to take pictures
with, fine.
This year, the workshop will be held
in Strathmore on Saturday, while an-

other session will be offered in Rosebud on June 6. With five individuals

already registered to take part, Reinholdt said spots are still available in
both sessions.
Kettenbach, who has a diploma in
photography, is seeking more input
from residents this time around. With
a focus on camera operation and composition, she said even knowing how
to best use your automatic settings can
improve your photos drastically.
I think photography is a really great
art for people to get involved with, because there are not as many barriers
to producing something youre happy
with, Kettenbach said. Because its
a push of a button, you just work on
composition. Its a lot more accessible
to people.
Last year, many of the cameras at the
workshop were used on automatic settings. However, according to Kettenbach, the settings are beneficial for
teaching the participants who might
get too overwhelmed with learning the
technical aspects of photography, such
as F-stops and shutter speeds.
Hope Bridges is offering both courses for $60, and a single session for $35.
Photography Tips is open to all
adults at any skill level, and will be
held in Strathmore on May 30 from 1-4
p.m. at Hope Bridges.

The Strathmore Spartans High
School boys soccer team was hopeful to get a key victory on May 25
before heading off to Cochrane to
take part in zones on the weekend.
Head coach Kaitrin McDonnell
was impressed with her teams
work ethic in preparation for the
zones.
The boys looked strong at practice this week, said McDonnell,
in an e-mail interview. We were
fighting for a win on Monday to
have solid momentum heading into
zones.
She added that having strong defense at zones would be crucial in
carrying the team.
Our defense is solid and they
hold the line and everyone is playing very well in their positions and
have a much stronger game sense,
said McDonnell.
There will be some strategies that
will hopefully be used effectively.
Weve been working a lot on
throw-in strategy and our corner
kicks to take advantage of opportunities throughout the game, she
said. Well need to communicate
on the field and come together as
a team. Im looking to Lane Anderson and our Captain Darion Sandri
for their continuous leadership and
presence on the field.
The Spartans will be in Cochrane
for zones on May 29-30.

Chaos exceed expectations in first season

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
From their attitude to their individual
skill level, the Strathmore Chaos volleyball team made tremendous strides in

their first season of play.

The relentless attitude on the court
earned them fifth spot in the U14 Division 3 category of the 2015 Volleyball
Canada Championships in Calgary from
May 14-19, as the girls made a quarterfi-

nals appearance.
After
finishing
the
round robin at 3-3, the
team made it to the Round
of 16, and won that game.
However, they would be
defeated in the quarterfinal by Airdrie.
The way at this level
that it works is all the girls
on your bench have to
play in the first two sets
to 15 points and there are
no substitutions. There is
a fair play rule, we have
starters, but with all that
said, everybody roles in
and plays a part, said Appleyard. We have people
that are serving specialists, people that are better
in the front row and we try
to introduce people in and
out of the line-up. For me
its about creating that experience and confidence
going into the future for
these girls, because what

season at the U14 level, making it to the quarter finals at Nationals
in Calgary from May 14-19.

it did is solidified our club

as merit, sustainability,
and promise.
As the first season
has come to a close, the
Strathmore Chaos left in
their wake a successful
campaign, sure to encourage Strathmore volleyball
players in the future.
We had four ladies that

never touched a ball before

and they were involved in
playing against teams that
have been together for
two years and competing,
Appleyard said. And they
built and expected more
and more of themselves as
the season went on. Thats
something that makes you
smile.

The Strathmore Community Football

Association has seen an upside to all
the players that have attended spring
camp, May 4-29.
The peewees assistant coach Greg
Zaugg was impressed with the work
ethic of his players.
The boys are all out working hard
and having some fun, said Zaugg.
At the peewee level, basic knowledge
of the game is the focus.
Right now were working on footwork, Zaugg said. Kind of more team
work than anything. Thats kind of the
big thing for me, working with the
boys.
Hopefully we can teach them some
skills that carry forth into the fall and
get ready for when they start to play
games.
The drills that are being taught are
going back to the basics and making
kids aware of the common plays on the
field.
Right now were working on passing
and receiving the ball to each other,
said Zaugg. A lot of focusing in on
how to run around and pay attention to
the guy youre up against.
Sean Seafoot has seen an increased
number of players showing up at camp
for bantam.
Its good to see this many guys out;

the guys in shape.

Senior coach Brad Middlemiss is optimistic for the upcoming season.
Weve got a lot of new
faces this year coming out of
Holy Cross that havent really played football before,
said Middlemiss. Were getting back to the basics and
its going good. Im quite
pleased with the way things
are going. Were still a little
on the light side 10 kids
signed up. Ultimately I
would like to have 14 or 15,
but 20 is always nice too.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Life is about opportunity. We have
such expressions as Opportunity Knocks to express the idea
that life is full of opportunities.
Someone once said, Too often,
the opportunity knocks, but by
the time you push back the chain,
push back the bolt, unhook the
two locks and shut off the burglar
alarm, its too late.
Have you ever kicked yourself
because you missed a golden
opportunity? I think all of us can
relate here. Has an opportunity
ever knocked on your door and
you were so caught up in other
things and as a result that opportunity slipped through your fingers?
Im convinced that it has happened
to all of us! But I pray that we
would wake up to the opportunities around us!
There are two opportunities that
the Bible encourages us not to
miss. First, we must not miss
the opportunity to reach out to
people who dont know Jesus.
Paul says in Colossians 4:5, Walk
in wisdom toward those who are
outside, making the most of every
opportunity.
Every day we live we have opportunity to share Jesus with others.
The question is, How serious are
we about reaching others? Are
we wasting the golden opportunities presented to us to lead

someone to Christ?
Second, we must not miss the
opportunity to do good deeds.
Galatians 6:10, Therefore, as we
have opportunity, let us do good to
all people, especially to those who
belong to the family of believers.
Jesus tells us about this in the
parable of the Good Samaritan.
The Levite and the Priest passed
by the man in need, and thus they
missed the opportunity to help this
person. The Good Samaritan took
advantage of the opportunity and
he stopped and served the man
in need.
There is a story about the Shoe
salesman that went to Africa.
He was there two weeks and he
wrote his company back a letter
saying, Please bring me home,
nobody wears shoes over here.
They sent another salesman in his
place and in a couple of weeks, he
sent a letter back to the company
saying, Please send all the shoes
you can, because nobody where
shoes here.
Our lives as Christians are about
opportunities. God places before
us the opportunities to share
Jesus with others and to do good
deeds. The question is: are we
taking advantage of those opportunities?

WHY IS STRATHMORE
HOSTING THE GAMES?

The Wildfire Basketball programs spring league had

May 21.

Wildfire basketball
emphasizes game experience
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wildfire basketball program

has seen players improve their skills
tremendously over the course of the
camp.
Head instructor Kyle Larson has seen
a great deal of positives out of the players but knows there is still room for
improvement for both groups.
Ive said for the long time, what
our kids lack is game experience, so
running this for the older boys in the
spring league, its giving them a lot of
opportunities, said Larson. The level
of play is increasing. The kids are playing better and better each week.
The emphasis in the camp is to enhance the players skills without taking
the fun out of the game.
Still focusing mainly on fundamentals, but the kids would like to play
some zone defense but were playing
all man-to-man, said Larson. And being more aggressive, taking the ball to

the basket, even defensively, being aggressive and up-tempo.

For the younger group, the program
serves as an introduction to the game
and focuses more on their skillset.
Its working on fundamentals and
drill-type stuff and really breaking
down the game in segments of what
were looking for from the kids both offensively and defensively, said Larson.
Over the years, the camp has seen an
increase of players and as a result the
game has grown locally.
According to Larson, the boys team
is strong with 65 boys participating, while the girls have dropped off
slightly to nearly 30 players. With such
strong numbers, Larson would like to
see better competition for these kids.
Weve only played in a couple of
tournaments and that would be the
only thing, is to try to give another level
of competition for some of the kids, he
added. I would like to see us continue
getting them started early and creating
an interest in the game.

Ken Slemko
It is with great sadness that we announce that
Kenneth John Slemko suffered a sudden and
unexpected heart attack in Canmore which claimed
his life on May 24, 2015 at the age of 67 years.
Remaining family held dear to Ken are Val, his
wife and constant companion of 43 years, and
his daughter Sarah (Dave), grandchildren Lucy,
Zander, Evan and Teagan.
Ken and Val farmed in the Strathmore area for
many years before moving to Canmore in 2002.
Ken loved the outdoors. He enjoyed biking and
hiking in the mountains and scuba diving in
Cozumel, Mexico.
Friends and family are invited to an informal
gathering of remembrance at the Creekside Hall,
Canmore Seniors Center, 600 - 9 Street at 1:00 pm
on Sunday, June 7, 2015.
Much have we loved you, but speechless was our
love, and with veils it has been veiled.
Yet now it cries aloud unto you, and would stand
revealed before you.
And ever has it been that love knows not its own
depth until the hour of separation.

THANK YOUS

I wish to thank everyone who has so kindly

thought of me during my recent fall and
illness. The house visits are so welcome,
and the lovely cards and phone calls
also help pass the time. The wonderful
meals, soup and baking really hit the spot.
I also want to give special thanks to Vera for caring
for Dixie. Also for the many trips to doctor
appointments and finally the hospital. It would be
impossible to have a better friend.
Also to my family for being so considerate and helping
whenever possible. Once again thank you and may
God bless you for all your kindness youve shown me.
Sincerely, Joy
