APPRECIATION OF OUR MARKET AND THE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF

THE SCIENTIFIC ASPECTS OF HORTICULTURE ARE OUR PRIORITIES

In 2012 the LED had well and truly embedded itself into the commercial lighting sector due to
technological advancements in reliability and performance. The regular inux of cheaply
manufactured and poor quality imported products and the obvious addition from the quality brands
had resulted in a tough, fragmented market.
One sector where uptake and acceptance of the LED was not as apparent was the horticultural
market, despite us seeing more hydroponically grown crops than ever before.
The market at this point did have the expected, imported products which were insucient in terms
of quality, performance and reliability and a team of energetic and ambitious UK based lighting
designers saw a gap..infact a gaping hole! There was no purely high quality, ultra high output,
UK manufactured horticultural luminaires. There was not a prestige product
and thats when e-llume was born.
We set about putting together a market leading range of products in terms of quality, reliability and
performance. We were met with much resistance due to the aforementioned poor quality,
reputation killing products but we just love handing the naysayers one of our luminaires for a trial!
The last two years have seen many LED converts and our results are outstandingoften
unbelievable.
As the LED horticultural sector continues to grow, we will always sit where our ambitions have led us,
striving for the ultimate yield whilst oering a safe, environmentally sound and reliable product.
The time is now.

Plants & Growth.

PAR/QUANTUM LIGHT (400-700nm)
The light that drives photosynthesis in plants is
Photosynthetically Active Radiation or PAR light. This is also
referred to as Quantum light as it is measured in units of moles
striking an area over time (umol/m2s).
PAR light ranges from 400nm to 700nm. The region brightest to
the human eye is the area of least eect on the plants.
Measuring PAR or Quantum light can tell you if your plants are
getting sucient amounts of useable light.

Benets of LEDs
Light is an important horticultural production tool and a key
factor in plant research. LEDs (light emitting diodes) are set to
play a major role in horticultural lighting. With LED lighting, the
growth light spectral output can be tuned, which makes it
possible to apply the optimum light recipe at every stage of a
crops growth. This capability, together with eective heat
management, long lifetime,
high luminous ecacy and energy eciency, opens up
tremendous opportunities for growers and breeders.
For the commercial horticulture market this means increased
yield, early owering, faster (root) growth, and more economical
use of space.
LED is practical and a useable technology that produces the
environmental savings we require. Our duty when considering
environmental input is to present all the benets of LED
technology and educate our clients.
Co2 emissions
Lighting is one of the easiest ways to save energy. Switching to
green alternatives has an immediate impact on energy use,
CO2 emissions and the environment. LED lighting supports
sustainable design in several ways: it uses less energy, lasts
longer (which means less frequent replacement and therefore
reduced waste), is mercury free and can be housed in special
luminaires designed for easier disassembly and recycling.
Sustainability and respect for the environment are key values of
e-llume. With LED solutions we take a major step forward in
achieving both aims.

The main properties of light that make

the plant grow well/ower:
Light quantity / intensity
The growth of a plant is strongly determined by the total
number of photons that it absorbs in the PAR region. In
winter there is often too little natural light for plants to
grow and continue to produce good owers and fruits.
Day length
With many plants, the time of owering is inuenced by
the photo-period. For example, a Chrysanthemum plant
will only bloom when the night is long. We call them short
day plants.
However, when you apply long day light to them, the
owering will be surpressed.
Spectrum
The mix of colours in the light (spectrum) also strongly
inuences the development of a plant.
Light uniformity
When using articial lighting, uniformity and constant
quality of the light spectrum is very important for a
constant quality of crop production.

Horto-Tune
Because of our ability to manipulate the output of the
LED we can recreate the exact spectral requirements
of any crop like never before.
Frequencies are the result of years of scientic
research into photosynthetic ecacy. In simple terms,
our luminaires provide the absolute best possible
light to allow your crops to ourish.
Other factors can also be controlled for example
canopy height and plant density.
At e-llume we provide the best possible toolsthe rest
is over to you.

PAR
Photosynthetically Active Radiation is dened
by the CIE as the total photon exposure in the
400 to 700 nm waveband range of radiation
that is absorbed by photosynthetic pigments.
Coincidentally, this is almost the same range of
wavelengths that is associated with human vision
(380-780 nm). However, human vision is most
sensitive to the green range of wavelengths
(peak sensitivity is at 555 nm).

The visible spectrum

The visible spectrum is the proportion of
electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the
human eye. Electromagnetic radiation is the
range of wavelengths that is called visible light
or simply light. A typical human eye will
respond from about 390 to 700 nm. In terms
of frequency, this corresponds to a band in the
vicinity of 430-790 THz.

Lighting & Horticultural Jargon

Explained
Chlorophyll a
Chlorophyll a is a specic form of chlorophyll
used in oxygenic photosynthesis. It absorbs
most energy from wavelengths violet-blue and
orange-red. It also reects green/yellow light
and as such contributes to the observed
green colour of most plants. This
photosynthetic pigment is essential for
photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll b
Chlorophyll b is a form of chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll b helps in photosynthesis by
absorbing light energy. It is more soluble than
chlorophyll a in polar solvents because of its
carbonyl group. Its colour is yellow and it
primarily absorbs blue light.

Further savings can be made by utilising the 3 switching modes thoughout the growth cycle.
Due to the extended lamp life of LEDs over traditional discharge lamp installations, excellent
maintenance savings can be achieved on lamp replacements and planned maintenance over the
lifetime of the luminaire.
