Malaysia generates hundreds of million tons of solid waste per year.

Commonly known term

for waste is trash or garbage. It cant be avoided and keep arising from years to years resulted
from human activity including from industrial, domestic and also personal usage. Nowdays,
waste have become a potential threat to the public health, environment and will also effect the
economic developement of the countries. The increasing numbers of waste are caused by
several factors such as growth of human population, development of the country, rising of the
standard of living, lifestyle and also come from seasonal variation. Thus, world and
specifically government have to take serious action to manage it and indirectly environmental
awareness is gaining much attention as almost all the company and organization are now
incorporating green elements into their product and process. Most of the companies realized
the importance of environmnental and waste management.

Most companies and organization implement ISO 14000 which can be defined as standard
guideline for the organization to be systematize and improve their environmental managemant
efforts. The main objectives of the standard are to minimize their operation or process from
giving negative effect to the environment that will cause adverse changes to air, water and
land and also to comply with applicable law and regulation or other oriented requirement. By
implementing the ISO 14000, The organization performance can be increased and directly
will increase the organization performance. In the other hand, it will minimizing the
environmental liability fines and the most important are by reduction of waste, the
consumption of resourse and the operating cost will be decrease.
Various methods have been used to investigate the way to reduce the negative effect of the
product and process to the environment such as life cycle assessement (LCA). LCA also
known as cradle to garve analysis are briefly defined as a tool for systematic evaluation of
environmental aspectsof certain product and service system through all satge of life cycle
(Figure 1). It is the technique to assess environmental impacts associated will all stages of
products life from cradle to the grave starting from raw material extraction, material
processing, manufacturing, distribution, usage, repair and mantainance, disposal and recycle.

There are several element of waste management that also known as solid waste management
hierarchy including reduce, reuse, recycle and compost, recover and disposal (Figure 2). From
the hierarchy, the most desirable way are reduce which means lowering the amount of waste
produced. Next is reuse and recyle, the organization have to try and make use of the source by
using it repeatedly and try to use it in many way as it can form varies type of product. Beside,
try to recover the energy from the waste and the least desirable are disposal or landfill which
can be the last option for the organization as it will cost more and it will gradually effect the
environment. Most of the organization will try to sort of their production plan according to the
hierarchy in order to implement LCA and also the ISO 14000.

Some of Malaysian still not aware of the place called KHTP or Kulim Hi-Tech Park situated
in the district of Kulim, in the state of Kedah, in the north-west of Peninsular Malaysia It have
been developed since 1996 covers an area approximately 1,700 hectares. The main objective
of KHTP is to become one of the worlds best location or sites for high tech and high tech
related companies. Today, KHTP has attracted investments worth more than USD million
from multinational and domestic companies. Pioneering the world name companies IN KHTP
included Intel, Fuji Electric, SilTerra,Infineon and many more. In 2015, more than worlwide
companies have been invested in KHTP. Among the company, the most biggest company are
First Solar.
As we know, the industrial area gave a lot of profit to the country but not to forget the rate of
waste production also increasing as the profit increase. Thus, the system of waste
management is the most crucial part to be taken for all the company in KHTP. First Solar was
formed in 1999 and launched production of first commercial product on 2002, it is the largest
photovoltaic module manufacturer in the world. First Solar is well known worldwide and
Malaysia is the only one in asia that have been invested by them, Their mission are to create
enduring value by enabling a world powered by clean, affordable solar electricity which
basically composed of clean and affordable that lead toward sustainabality.
The Safety First is a core value for their association as the manufacturing processes include
comprehensive and conservative environmental health and safety protocols and processes.
The company have been validate with several type of ISO certified such as ISO14001, ISO
9001 and OHSAS 18001. The company give a full commitment toward environmental
responsibility which can be describe in three word as clean, affordable and sustainable.
Firstly, convert mining by products to clean and renewable energy. Next is affordable where
the company pay more attention toward reduction of emission by substituting solar energy for
fossil fuel in term of product design, material sourcing, manufacturing, product usage, product
collection and recycling. The next one are sustainable which minimize environmental impact
by producer collection and recycling.
LCA can estimate cummulative environmental impact resultingfrom all satges in the product
life cycles.

As the figure 3, the stages of LCA were divided into four which is goal and scope definition,
inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation.
will be discussed each one briefly
