Fairies are mythical creatures that are believed to have inhabited the UK and Ireland long
before humans arrived. The name fairy can be confusing, as it can refer to the collective
of all metaphysical or preternatural creatures (including pixies and goblins), or a specific
type of entity within that group (popularly believed to be human-like, small and capable
of flight). What follows is a list where fairy encounters have (or are likely to) occur.
Kidnapping
Location: Aberfoyle (Stirling) - Fairy Hill

Further Comments: The Rev Robert Kirk is said to have been kidnapped by fairies here. He appeared in
ethereal form a couple of times after the event, begging for help in escaping from the fairy world.

Fairy Funeral
Location: Aberystruth (Gwent) - Church Lane

Further Comments: A small procession of fairies were reported travelling along the lane towards the church to
bury one of their own.

Coffin Makers
Location: Aghacashlaun (County Leitrim) - Corargeen (fort)

Further Comments: The fairies which lived at this fort were said to have borrowed a man's hatchet to make a
coffin for a neighbour's child two weeks prior to his death.

Dwarf with Pointed Hat

Further Comments: The witness to this encounter stated that they once bumped into a four foot high figure
wearing a green pointed hat feeding the plants.

Little Folk

Further Comments: Fairies once made their home here, and rewarded a local man with food after he helped one
of their kind repair a kitchen utensil.

Fairy Hill

Further Comments: Famed for its fairies, these pesky fellows kidnapped a local baker's wife - she was only
returned after her husband broke the fairy spell by accidentally standing on one leg.

Secret Fairies
Location: Andreas (Isle of Man) - Shan Cashtal barrow

Further Comments: The fairies here once travelled to and from the barrow using underground passageways
leading to a nearby churchyard (at Maughold).

Evil Fairies
Location: Annandale (Dumfries and Galloway) - Burnwark Hill

Further Comments: A palace concealed within this hill was run by an army of evil fairies - they would kidnap
anyone foolish enough to venture close to their land.

Trolls
Location: Appletreewick (Yorkshire) - Trollers Gill (or Ghyll)

Further Comments: Living beneath the ravine, the trolls are said to emerge at night and track down their prey humans. At least one farmer was lured to his death by their ability to trick people into straying from the road.

Short Men in Green

Location: Aran Island (County Galway) - Exact location not known

Further Comments: A fifteen year old boy spotted two figures sea fishing, each just over a metre tall, dressed in

green and wearing brown shoes. The figures chattered to each other in Irish before jumping up and vanishing.
One of the figures left a small pipe behind which the witness took, although it later disappeared when 'safely'
locked away.

Leprechaun's Shoe
Location: Ardrah (County Cork) - Field in the area

Further Comments: A small shoe said to belong to a leprechaun was found near the village by a cow herder.
Unfortunately the man forgot to take it home, and when he went to retrieve it the following day, it had gone.

Pooka

Location: Ashby de la Zouch (Leicestershire) - Private residence

Further Comments: A witness who awoke in the middle of the night encountered what she believed to be a fairy
entity known as a Pooka, sleeping over the pelmet of a landing window. The creature was similar to a little piglet
but with a longer, pointy nose and no visible tail. The part of the house where the sighting happened is on the pat
of a ley line.

Bagpipes
Location: Athgreany (County Wicklow) - Stone circle, aka Piper's Stones

Further Comments: Played by the fairy folk, the sound of bagpipes could once be heard emerging from the
stones. A tree in the centre of the stone circle is considered to belong to the fairies.

Sprites & Pixies

Location: Ballona (Isle of Man) - Ballona Bridge

Further Comments: On this day the fairy population comes out in force. If they are not acknowledged by any

one crossing the bridge, the fairy folk have no hesitation in making their presence felt.

Bankruptcy
Location: Ballyconnell (County Cavan) - Aughrim Wedge Tomb

Further Comments: According to the Belfast Telegraph, former billionaire Sean Quinn moved the Aughrim
Wedge Tomb in 1992, which was home to fairy folk. These little entities cursed the man responsible for the
relocation - Sean was at one point worth just under five billion euros, and as of November 2011, he only had
eleven thousand euros in the bank.

Bagpipers

Further Comments: The fort in this field was home to four fairy bagpipers dressed in red.

Black Goat
Location: Ballyvaughan (County Clare) - Poulaphuca, area around dolmen
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: This goat, though by some to be a fairy being, resides over the tombs in the area. The
creature causes anyone who threatens the land to develop a hunchback.

Idris

Location: Barmouth (Gwynedd) - Cader Idris (aka Caldair Idris)

Further Comments: Idris was said to be a wise giant, who may have had links with King Arthur. People would
avoid the area at night, convinced that fairies would drive them mad. Another legend says that the site was the
hunting ground of Gwyn ap Nudd (Ruler of the Otherworld) who searched the area with a pack of Cwn Annwn,
looking for souls to take back home. Finally. Strange lights are said to appear around the summit for the first few

days of a new year.

Tiny Green People

Location: Bassenthwaite (Cumbria) - Piel Wyke

Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: Two children digging on the mound said they unearthed a small cottage with a slate roof,
though when they returned a short time later, the construction had vanished. A few days later their father saw two
small people in green standing on the hill - they vanished into it.

Fighting Fairies
Location: Battlebridge (County Roscommon) - Bridge
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A farmer from Sheemore (Co Leitrim) who once helped the fairies had his cattle taken by
bailiffs. The bailiffs drove the cattle for a few miles before being intercepted by the fairies at a bridge, where the
bailiffs were beaten by invisible foes and scared away. Legend says this is how Battlebridge received its name.

Colt Pixie
Location: Beaulieu Heath (Hampshire) - Cold Pixie's Cave
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: A horse-like pixie, this fairy entity would play mild pranks and call out to horses so they
became lost.

Water Fairies
Location: Beddgelert (Gwynedd) - Aberglaslyn Pass
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: A witness watched the little people playing merrily in the water at the pass. Nearby is the
grave of Gelert (the dog that was mistakenly killed by its master after saving a child from a wolf) where the
hound's ghost has been reported. Finally, the ghostly woman in white who haunts the area is an ill omen, with

death said to follow a sighting.

Knockers

Location: Bedruthan (Cornwall) - Beach, cliff top, & Bedruthan Steps

Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Some believe these creatures to resemble mutant dwarfs (two foot high, large eyes with
deformed and twisted heads), while others call them the ghosts of those killed while being forced to work for the
Romans... Either way, they can be heard mining and picking away at the rocks underground in these areas.

Helpful Fairies
Location: Beedon (Berkshire) - Burrow Hill
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: The little people here are traditionally helpful in
nature, and once fixed a plough for a farmer. When archaeologists tried
to dig up the barrow in 1850, a storm blew up and drove them away. A
golden coffin is said to be buried in the area.

Small Staircase
Location: Beetham (Cumbria) - The Fairy Steps

Further Comments: Too small for normal human use, the stairs are believed to have been designed
for fairy use

Young Girl

Location: Ben Alder (Highland) - Below the mountain, en route for Loch Ossian
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: April / May 2011
Further Comments: Having traversed old drover track on western shoulder of Ben Alder, a walker was looking
for a suitable spot to cross a stream. The walker noticed the image of a smiling young girl, dressed in blue/green
watery outfit, sitting on a slab of rock amidst the fast moving water. She was pointing to the water, enticing the
walker to cross. The walker panicked and moved further downstream, crossing at a point where the water was
calmer.

Fairy Song
Location: Bincombe Down (Dorset) - Singing Barrows

Further Comments: Local superstition states that if you place your ear to the ground here at midday, you can
hear the soft singing of fairy folk.

Fairy Rings
Location: Birstall (Leicestershire) - Mill Hill

Further Comments: This area was widely believed to be the haunt of fairy folk, where they would come and
dance in the pale moonlight.

Fairy Guardians

Location: Bishopton (Durham) - Castle Hill

Further Comments: Though the castle is long gone, the area is still a place where fairies hide - anyone trying to
steal earth or soil from the land is warned off by whispering voices.

Fairy Fair

Further Comments: Fairies were once believed to hold annual fairs on the hills, singing and dancing throughou
the night.

Fairy Cow

Further Comments: A local farmer once kept a cow that was used by fairies after dark - the little folk were
driven away, and the farmer's luck changed from good to bad.

Little Man
Location: Bottlehill (County Cork) - Road heading towards Cork

Further Comments: Farmer Mick Purcell was forced to take his cow to Cork to sell. While on the road Purcell
met a little man and swopped the cow for a small bottle. Understandably, returning home with a bottle instead of
money upset Purcell's wife, until he opened it - out sprang two figures which covered the table with gold and
silver dishes.

Figures in Brown

Further Comments: Seen in a garden on this estate, several little people dressed in brown played in and around
the bushes before being scared off.

Further Comments: This is another site said to be home to the fairies, although details are fleeting.

Further Comments: Becoming world famous, the handful of fairy photographs taken here by the girls Elsie &
Frances are still a bone of contention in the fortean world. The book by Joe Cooper, 'The Case of the Cottingley
Fairies', is worth reading for further (and very detailed) information.

Urisk
Location: Breadalbane (Stirling) - Hills around the area

Further Comments: Urisk were said to be part human and part fairy, and shunned by both races. They would
sometimes be seen sitting by the roadside, or loitering outside farms and other buildings in want of food.

Secret Door
Location: Brecon Beacons (Powys) - Llyn Cwm Llwch, somewhere in the area of

Further Comments: Once a year, a secret door opens here which will take mortals to the fairy realm. The door
was once always open, but after a man stole a fairy flower, access was restricted. The area is also home to an old
woman who uses music to lure the weak willed into the lake waters where they drown - once she has killed nine
hundred people she will regain her youth and become mortal.

Goat Man
Location: Bridge of Orchy (Argyll and Bute) - Ben Doran

Further Comments: This Urisk was banished to the mountain by a saint, and has remained here since.

Music in the Air

Location: Bridport (Dorset) - Colmer's Hill
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1939
Further Comments: Fairy music was once not uncommon in this area. While last heard in 1939 by a group of
school children, one hundred years previous it was said a young girl danced herself to death to the tunes.

Market Place
Location: Bridport (Dorset) - Langdon Hill

Further Comments: The hill and the area around it is said to be a haven for the fairy folk - one man once
stumbled upon a fairy market from which he tried to steal gold. By the time he reached home, the coins had
changed into pebbles.

Little Red Capped Man

Location: Brixham (Devon) - Area around Lupton House

Further Comments: The author Violet Tweedale reported seeing a twelve centimetre tall man dressed in green,
sitting beneath a small plant. He vanished after a minute of her observing him.

Dying Cattle
Location: Brosna (County Kerry) - Former croft at Knockeencreen (currently a cattle shed?)

Further Comments: A man whose cattle were dying mysteriously was informed by a passing gypsy that his
home was blocking a fairy path, and by leaving the doors open at night, the fairies could pass happily pass
through. The man did so, and the deaths stopped.

Gnomes
Location: Broxted (Essex) - Broxted & Tilty area

Further Comments: Appearing at all times of the day and night, locals have blamed the gnomes and other fairy
folk for a multitude of tricks. A number of sightings have been reported, though none in living memory.

Uniformed Pixies

Further Comments: These little people, standing a couple of feet tall, wore red military uniforms, as if guarding
the burial site. Other people have seen the little people dancing over the dolman.

Further Comments: The town is said to have become a battleground for a fairy war - red fairies with pointed
ears engaged little green pixies until the former group were driven out.

Bee Hole Boggart

Changeling

Further Comments: Mary Scannell discovered that her own healthy baby had been replaced by a sickly child
which did not stop crying - a changeling! A wise woman told Mary to underfeed the changeling and to beat it.
Within a week the new child had gone, and the fairies returned Mary's own baby.

Dancing Folk

Further Comments: The round barrow on this site was home to a hundred or so dancing fairies (according to
Mary Howitt), with nine harp players to provide music.

Watching Pixies
Location: Challacombe (Devon) - Area between village and Chapman's Barrows, locally known as Pixie Rocks

Further Comments: These little fellows use the rocks as a lookout area, the jagged crags forming a natural
defence.

The Funny Man

Further Comments: Many have complained of being harassed by an unknown force while at the building,
reports blaming an ugly little dwarf said to haunt the area, particularly the churchyard.

Further Comments: This little man is said to stand guard over a fabulous wealth, once concealed from greedy
men.

Strange Sprite

Further Comments: This religious building was due to be built in a slightly different position, but every night a
large fairy appeared and moved the walls. The builders finally gave in and finished the construction where the
sprite recommended.

Little Old Men with Long Beards and Pointy Hats

Further Comments: Two girls watched a couple of fairy folk, described as looking like the average garden
gnome, dig a hole in the school's playing field.

Fairy Music

Further Comments: The haunting sound of fiddling
has been heard in this ancient area, leading some to say
that the music is produced by fairies. A few people who
have removed stones from the site are reported have
returned them after suffering from bad luck.

Dancing Trolls

Further Comments: Small troll-like creatures are said to party and play jovial music in this wooded area. They
welcome anyone who shows no fear of them.

Urisk

Further Comments: The cascade of water is named after the human/fairy hybrid that once lived there.

Chatterer

Further Comments: An entity here was said to keep a former owner company - the old woman would sit by the
fire with the spirit next to her.

Dancing Pixies

Further Comments: The little people have been seen in this area for many years now, often dancing the night

Hidden Fairies

Further Comments: Children digging in the area were said to have unearthed a small fairy house - it later
vanished, along with their digging equipment, though two small figures were observed in the area for several
days afterwards.

Fairies Playing around Trees

Further Comments: An inhabitant of the road watched a group of fairies dancing around an old tree trunk.

Little Man
Location: Coleford (Gloucestershire) - Unknown building in town
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: A little man-like figure was found in crawling around in a coal scuttle. The figure was

carried out and left on the driveway, never to be seen again.

Angry Dwarf
Location: Colne (Lancashire) - Hobstones Farm
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: This entity, part fairy and part ghost, was seen many times and drove out several families,
until exorcised by clergy. The bleeding, severed arm was said to be the most noticeable and terrifying feature of
the manifestation. Phantom cavaliers were also reported, as were violent poltergeist outbreaks.

Ugly Fairy
Location: Corsham (Wiltshire) - Churchyard

Further Comments: This little creature, standing no taller than one metre, was seen sitting upon one of the
gravestones. It was once seen by two women - one fainted, the other traumatised. A third woman with them saw
nothing.

Brownie
Location: Cranshaws (Borders) - Cranshaws Tower

Further Comments: This friendly entity would help keep the building clean and tidy, though it left for good
after a servant criticised the quality of its work.

Leprechaun
Location: Crookstown (County Cork) - Fort in the area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This little fellow wore a red cap, a black jacket, long grey stockings and
narrow shoes with turned up toes. His home was in a row of bushes which grew close to the fort.
Most people knew not to go near the bushes, but Mr Sullivan decided that they needed a trim. After a

few minutes cutting away, he severed the top of his finger, so quit the task.

Goblins
Location: Crossways (Dorset) - Buck Barrow, Knighton Heath Wood

Further Comments: The name of this barrow implies it was once
believed to be haunted by goblins or other fairy folk.

Dancing Sheppard
Location: Crymch (Dyfed) - Freni-Fawr mountain
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: A youth tending to his sheep was convinced to dance by a small group of fairies - when he
did, he was transported to fairyland, but returned to the mountain once he stopped his jig.

Tylwyth Teg

Location: Cwm y Llan (Gwynedd) - General area of the valley

Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Tylwyth Teg, a race of fairies believed to be the souls of druids, are thought to reside in
this valley.

Malekin

Location: Dagworth (Suffolk) - The house of Sir Osberni de Bradewelle

Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1189-1199
Further Comments: Malekin would converse with the family of Sir Osberni de Bradewelle, sharing people's
secrets and humouring householders in the voice of a one year old child. The entity would speak in both English
and Latin, and while Malekin could be heard and felt, he only appeared once; manifesting as a child dressed in a
white tunic to a woman who agreed not to try and touch him. Malekin claimed that he had been born in
Lavenham, removed from a field after being left there by his mother, and he had a hat which made him invisible.

Pixies
Location: Dartmoor (Devon) - New Bridge

Further Comments: Several of these small creatures are said to loiter around the area.

Pixie
Location: Dartmoor (Devon) - Shaugh Bridge area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1897
Further Comments: This wee fellow, standing 45 centimetres in height and wearing blue and red clothing,
quickly vanished once he realised he had been spotted. The area is also said to be where the Devil and his
hellhounds hunt.

Little People
Location: Dartmoor (Devon) - Sheepstor - Pixies Cave

Further Comments: The cave was shared with the pixies by humans when hiding during the Civil War.

Fairy Treasure
Location: Dinghurst (Somerset) - Dolebury Warren hillfort

Further Comments: Dressed in red cloth, the fairies would keep an eye on their treasure buried under the
hillfort. Fairy pipes were said to have been found around the site.

Donn of the Sandhills

Location: Dough (County Clare) - Close to the site of the old castle

Further Comments: Donn was said to be one of the most powerful fairy kings, but he was forgotten about as he
lacked a bard to sing his praises.

Lilac Balls of Light

yours, she could change fate. The owner of the castle, upon seeing the
creature, tried to grab it and failed - he died in battle the following day.
As if this entity was not enough to contend with, the area is haunted by a
headless horseman.

aids, who conspired against the king but were turned to
stone anyway.
