From the Principal’s Desk
Good News
Announcements Dear Parent/Guardian:

It is my goal to continue to keep Oriole families informed and to make you

Before School Reading aware of all the opportunities you have to be involved in your child’s
Program education. Educating your children is a monumental task and a shared
responsibility between the home and school and staying involved in your
Grade Level Update
child’s education is directly connected to increased student achievement. I
am asking that you assist your child each and every night by listening to
them read or you can read to them each night for at least 30 minutes.
Title One Update
I encourage you to attend our monthly SAC/SAF/PTO meetings to stay
abreast of the needs of our school as well as the awesome strides our
students and teachers are making on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

As always, my door is open for any parent concerns. I want your child’s
experience to be an invigorating and exciting experience while he or she is
at Oriole. Also, it is vital that you can continue to receive academic

Thanks to OptaComp for your donation

Dear OptaComp Partners,

It is with great pleasure to inform you that your contribution that supplied Oriole’s
students with over 600 books has provided rewards, which are both immediate and
long-term. Oriole’s 3-5th grade students took 3,539 Accelerated Reader quizzes
between September 2, 2009 and December 15, 2009. Our students passed 2,743
quizzes with at least 85% accuracy. We had 124 students gaining entrance into the
"10 Club" meaning that they read, took and passed at least 10 AR (books) quizzes
during the challenge period. Our students read and passed more tests these 18
weeks then any other school year in the past. We believe that higher fluency coupled
with comprehension monitoring will equate to higher proficiency.

Our teachers believe that the additional reading our students accomplished in order
to participate in the challenge dramatically effected their reading level. We consider
the reading challenge an excellent idea and wonderful opportunity to encourage
students to read more. This experience has been our honor and tremendous
success for Oriole’s students.

Parents, you must obtain permission from your child's classroom teacher to be able to have a birthday party in
the classroom. You must be able to provide the date and the teacher will provide the scheduled time, which is
1:30 p.m. Please contact the front office at 754-322-7550 on the day of the scheduled event to confirm. Thank
you for your assistance in this matter. Any parent attending an event for his/her child must complete a

Arrival Procedures (Tardy)

Please be reminded that classroom instruction starts at 8:00 a.m. each day. All students arriving after this time
will be marked as tardy. It is essential that your child is present in school and on time each day so he/she can
have the best educational experience. Any student having more than three (3) tardies will have a letter written
to the parent and copied to the school social worker.

Bus PM Pickups (East Side)

Please note that only school busses and after school day care busses will be allowed to pick up students on the
east side of the building. All parents who are picking up their child must do so on the west side before 2:20
p.m.

School Zone Rules

We are asking for your assistance in obeying School Zone Rules when near our campus. Please be mindful of
the 15 MPH speed limit law. Due to the increase of speeding cars, we have requested the assistance of our local
law enforcement to run radar/laser to help assist us in protecting our students. Secondly, many parents have
been observed using their cellular phone while driving through our drop-off and pick-up loops. Please note the
posted sign which outlines the statute of, “Cellular phone use while in these areas are restricted.”

Afternoon Procedures
Students are to be picked up from the west side only prior to 2:15 p.m. After 2:15 p.m. these gates will be
locked an all parents must enter the campus through the east side gate, proceed to the front office and sign their
child out. Any pattern of late student pick-up will be referred to the proper agency.

Tardy Procedures
Teachers at our school begin their instruction in the classroom at 8:00 a.m. each day. Thus, any student who
arrives to class after 8:00 a.m. must enter through the front office and receive a tardy pass. Any pattern of
excessive tardiness can and will warrant an administrative conference. Should you have any questions, please
contact Administration.

Partners in Education
The Partners in Education program links businesses and organizations with schools in
relationships that enhance student learning and promote school improvement. In a
partnership, a business adopts a school, or schools, and shares its human and material
resources. Education and business are so closely related that each flourishes from the support
and prosperity of the other. Schools must prepare today's students for their entry into a
diverse, competitive work force. When businesses take part in the education of these young
people, they help strengthen the work force of the future. The Partners in Education program
is vital in helping the community and the school grow together. Any questions, please contact
Dr. Reardon at 754-322-7550. Welcome to our newest partner:

Oriole Elementary School

School-Wide Teacher Updates

Greetings from Oriole’s Head Start Classroom!

January was a very exciting month for our Pre-K classroom.

We started a new Literacy Program called “O.W.L”
(Opening the World of Literacy). The students are enjoying
the new stories, songs, and rhymes and enhancing their pre-
reading skills in the process.

Our class would like to congratulate Ms. Kaullis Marshall,

one of our Pre-K parents, for becoming the new president of
the Head Start Parent Policy Council. Way to go Ms.
Marshall!

We wish everyone a very Happy Valentines Day this month

and appreciate all the love and support from our Oriole
family!

Mrs. Cooke, Mrs. Jones, & the Pre-K students

Ms. Bowen’s
Kindergarten Class

Our Kindergarten Class will be very busy this month. We will

celebrate the 100th day of school by dividing 100 cookies,
filling in a 100 chart and stringing 100 froot loops.

We will read "Our Children Can Soar" by Michelle Cook, and

learn about ten famous African Americans.

We will have a Valentine's Day party and make a graph with

valentine candy hearts.

We will write a story about " The Happiest Valentine Heart”.

President's Day is this month. We will learn about our

presidents. We will make Lincoln logs and explore the penny
and the quarter.

Reminders.... Report cards will be issued on February 4.

Report card night is February 2. 6:00 pm.
Picture day is February 5.
Please check the homework folders daily.
Take out the graded
work and keep at home.
Ms. Miller
“Sensational Second Graders”

Sensational Second Graders from Ms. Miller’s class are

soaring through the year. We are stepping up on our
reading strategies as well as reading skills. We recently put
our skills and strategies to the “test”. We are looking
forward to our upcoming Black History Project in the
month of February. Students are learning to become model
citizens in their school community.
We are engaging in consumer math problems on a daily
basis. Our science investigation recently
concluded with a test of “Force and Motion”. Where
students demonstrated moving some objects and charting if
they had to use the push or pull method. Additionally,
students were able to share their outcomes with their group
members. Please continue to assist your child with their
educational needs.
Mrs. Blocker-Coleman
3rd Grade

The students in Mrs. Blocker-Coleman’s class are currently in

what we call a Blitz mode. This will take us right up to the day of
the FCAT. While in this Blitz mode, we are totally focusing on
Reading and Math. We are reviewing reading strategies, test
taking skills, math concepts and so much more. The students have
been broken into small groups based on the data that indicated
each student’s area of weakness. The students rotate throughout
the 2 1/2-hour reading block to other teachers on the 3rd grade
team. Each teacher on the third grade team has a focus skill for the
students that enter their classrooms. The students are grouped in
the same way for the math weaknesses. When
the students return to Mrs. Blocker-Coleman’s class, there is even
more review work. Mrs. Blocker-Coleman also has some of her
students attending after-school tutoring as well as Saturday FCAT-
Camp. In our class, learning is our only option!
Ms. Rosa and Ms. Brodsky
4th Grade

Collaboration is one of the fundamental elements of effective

teaching. When teachers work together, students are more
successful. For that reason, Ms. Brodsky and Ms. Rosa have
decided to team up to better prepare students to tackle the FCAT in
reading, writing, and math. Ms.Brodsky’s class pushes in to Ms.
Rosa’s class five days a week for reading, writing and math.
Students work on skills such as problem solving, critical thinking,
and cooperative learning. This month’s Instructional Focus in
reading is Reference & Research, during which students were
given the task, of creating timelines, based on a piece of non
fiction text, ‘The Life of Ponce DeLeon”, integrating social studies
curriculum into the reading block. This month’s Instructional
Focus in math is Data Analysis and Probability, during which
students created bar graphs displaying the data they gathered about
the different colors represented in the Fruit Loops cereal found in
their individual bags. They then interpreted their bar graphs to
create frequency graphs, tally charts, and pictographs. Examples of
student work can be seen on both the bulletin boards in the hallway
as well as on the fourth grade blog, found on the school website.
Ms.Rosa’s and Ms. Brodsky’s class would like to tell the FCAT,
“Together we stand, divided we fall and today we stand
TOGETHER!!”
Mrs. Hechavarria’s
5th Grade Class

This is an exciting time for students in the fifth grade and the
students have a zeal for learning. As we approach the third
semester of the 2009-2010 school year, we are still on course to
learn the best way we can.

During our Reading block we continue to work on many reading

skills. Our Instructional Focus in Reading is Cause and Effect. We
have been working on how to locate the key words to identify
cause and effect questions in reading passages.

In addition, as the Black History Month approaches, students will

use their research skills to obtain important information of a
famous African American and their contributions they have made
in America. They will be using their technology talents to create a
PowerPoint for their presentation.

Finally, parents please remember as students read at home, please

encourage them to use their good reading strategies so they are
practicing what we are modeling and learning in school.

Fifth grade is always on the move. Keep listening for upcoming

fantastic and fabulous fifth grade work.
