PERSONAL STATEMENT

My name is Putranty Widha Nugraheni. Most people call me Rani. I am getting my bachelor
degree in Chemistry Education major at State University of Malang in October 2013. In my program, I
have learned about environmental chemistry, chemistry industrial process, chemical technology, and
how we should apply them at society. Although I also learn a lot about education and how to transfer
the chemistry subject to senior high school students, I am also having a huge desire to learn about green
chemistry and how green chemistry can change the lifestyle of communities. I believe that the deep
understanding about the chemistry itself will help to improve my way of teaching a lot, so I can deliver
my knowledge to my students better than before.
Due to my major, my Bachelors Thesis is about Collaborative Guided Inquiry and its
implementation to students achievement on Solubility and Solubility Product materials. The objective of
this teaching experiment is to improve the capability of the students simultaneously. Collaborative
Guided Inquiry is a strong learning model to provide teaching professionally based on the consideration
that teachers are the stakeholders for the school improvement. This kind of learning model is quiet
effective to construct the concept in students mind well. This learning model also constructs knowledge
through reflection with other students, build concept collaborative action, and state the concept
together with the teachers guide. With quasi-experimental design, the study results showed that there
was effect of the implementation of Collaborative Guided Inquiry learning model on the students
achievement on solubility and solubility product materials. The students who were taught by
collaborative guided inquiry had higher achievement than those who were taught by guided inquiry
only. In two months experiment and with my lecturers guides, I got excellent (A) mark in
comprehensive exam.
I also ever made a research about senior high school students understanding, perception, and
attitude about acid rain phenomenon in green chemistry contemplation. I made this paper based on my
anxiety about my environment, seeing that people awareness to protect and maintain their
surroundings is depleted day by day. To prevent damage to the environment, students play a big part;
because I believe that our planet futures pin a faith on the next generation, in this case the students.
Students should understand about acid rain and how to prevent it to protect their own environment. If
the students have good knowledge of acid rain problem, they will have good attitude and good
perception with this problem, too.

Besides my lecture programs, I also get active in college organization. I was joined in Forum of
Science and Technology in my faculty of natural sciences. I am beginning to get interested in green
chemistry when I was pointed to be a project manager in National Scientific Paper Competition (NSPC)
for high school students, whereas the theme of this competition is Innovation of Sustainable
Technology for a Better Future. With this position, I stood the racket to manage my team member to
do their duty as their job description, besides searching and learning about the latest sustainable
technology that can applicable in our daily life. In this event, there are plenty of creative papers that talk
about sustainable technology. For example, one paper discussed about The Processing of Tapioca Liquid
Waste as a Liquid Fertilizer in EM-4 Basis to Additional Nutrition in Papaya (Carica papaya L.). Another
paper talked about Gel Silica Innovation from Rice Plants shuck (Oryza sativa) as an Adsorbent of Pb(II)
Ion. Interestingly, most of participants oftentimes worked through about fuel alternative, such as using
of Scenedesmus sp. micro algae, cassava, durian, and coconut shell waste as fuel alternative. These kind
of brilliant ideas make me think about industrialize and make them as a one kind of alternative energy,
seeing that my country and also the world at need of another fuel choices. Moreover, me and my team
ever being a finalist in national scientific paper competition Youth Power 2012 at Gajah Mada
University, Yogyakarta in Be Mature For Nature theme with our paper that talking about how to
reduce paper utilizing in academic environment.
Indonesia is a home for a more than 240 million people. Furthermore, the population of
Indonesia citizen expanded dramatically while the natural resources such as fresh water, mineral, and
fossil fuels depleted drastically. In these days, fossil fuels become the most used energy source in the
world because it is easier to process and convert into the ready-to-use energy. That is why; Indonesia
still depends on fossil fuels intensely. Until today, up to 90% of energy source still supported by oils and
coals, whereas we have plenty of alternative energy beside fossil fuels, yet they have still not employed
as well as fossil fuels. We know that crude oil is a non-renewable energy, so their existence will not
everlasting. Predicted, in not more than 50 years, the fossil fuel will be extinct. Moreover, the overused
of them donate some bad impact on our planet, such as global warming and air pollution from factories
and vehicles. The emissions and fumes exhausting may cause global temperatures to rise and at the end
we can experience more extreme weather conditions.
Green chemistry presented to solve those problems, since it involved promoting alternative
innovations for some of these negative effects and attitudes. Indonesia looks promising to answer the
troubles. With the abundance of earth-friendly alternative energy, such as geothermal, nuclear,

biomass, sunlight, hydrogen, wind, and even water, the utilizing of fuels can be replaced. For example,
as agricultural land, Indonesia has big prosperity in palm, castor, or soya or even waste can be used to
bio-diesel manufacturing, while cassava and corn also useful to make bio-ethanol. These plants are
energy source with zero CO2 on its emission, so it will not being a trigger for greenhouse effect, If these
potential source being industrialized well, I am quite sure that it hopeful for my environment, country,
or an even possible: my world.
For the execution, I will cooperate with mechanical engineers who know well about machine
and its modifications, so the fuel can be used in public and private vehicles, factories, fisheries, and
another sectors. Surely, the life cycles will be continued in delight and no worries anymore. Our life will
be improved, so does the citizens. The well-planned constructions and its policies should be wellestablished. So, although the governments and politicians change regularly, the plans do not get
changed. Therefore, the strict rules such as deforestation and reforestation of should be controlled in
balance.
If I got accepted as a Master Students in University of Leicester, it is likely to me to build my
thesis that talking about utilizing and industrializing waste and biomass to make alternative energy to
limit fossil fuel using. My final aim is to be a great lecturer that has much knowledge about green
chemistry. That is why I want to studying in Master of Green Chemistry at The University of Leicester,
United Kingdom, which is provides me to get deep comprehension in chemistry. Furthermore, University
of Leicester placed in Top 3 Position in the Guardian University Guide 2014. From this fact, I believe that
the quality of this university is indubitable, so I can learn a lot of things that will improve my skill and
ability in chemistry. By learning a lot of research in industry to help my project undergo in biological and
green chemistry, it will help me a lot to achieve my dreams after my study had been completed. After I
propose my project to the city governments, I also want to transfer my knowledge to my students, so
they also can help their environment around their home, and it would be better if they can improve my
project. Continuously, every area of my country will be improved conveniently and delightful to live for.
Finally, I surely have a great faith that my country still has a big hope. As long as the youth still
cogitate over their country and put the heads together about refining their own home, I believe that my
country will be helped a lot. I will start to pull my socks up and start working for my countrys sake.
