Township should better
allocate resources
I read your recent front-page
article reporting that the
Moorestown Township Council
passed the 2015 budget. Thank
you for educating the taxpayers
as to the makeup of the agreed
upon increase.
I must admit, however, some
chagrin at the fact that half of the
agreed upon 2 percent increase is
due to a state-required increase in
the library budget. I had to read
the applicable paragraphs several
times to grasp their meaning. I
deduced several disappointing
facts.
First, the increase in the li-
brary budget is not 1 percent. Un-
less my reading comprehension
has suffered significantly with
the passing years, one has to mul-
tiply last year’s total municipal
budget by 1 percent in order to de-
termine the additional dollars al-
located to the library budget for
2015.
Second, it is not the Township
of Moorestown that determines
what portion of its resources is
allocated to operating the library.
It is, in fact, some state bureau-
crat pursuant to some imbecilic
statute that decrees how much
should be allocated.
Third, unless I am blind, did
not the Township of Moorestown
recently open a $16 million mu-
nicipal complex, which included
a brand new library? Does any of
the debt service or depreciation of
this edifice get factored into how
much Moorestown is already
spending on the library so that
the state can be convinced that
the local bureaucrats are spend-
ing plenty already?
Lastly, are there not possibly
other operating or capital needs
that should take precedence over
more resources being allocated to
the library, e.g., water quality or
dredging Strawbridge Lake? Can-
not these issues be taken up with
the state geniuses to allow the
township to better allocate its re-
sources?
This reinforces completely
what it is about living in New Jer-
sey that I treasure so much. Idiot-
ic, bureaucratic, expensive non-
sense foisted upon its ignorant
over-taxed citizens.

More casinos? This could work
Building casinos in North Jersey could be a good idea, if done properly

ur legislators seem to have
run out of ideas to get New
Jersey back on track finan-
cially. So, instead of brainstorming
new ways to give our economy a boost,
they are instead considering a re-hash
of the same old thing – casinos.
Lawmakers are considering putting
a ballot on this November’s elections
that would ask voters whether they
support expanding the state’s laws to
allow casino gaming in parts of the
state outside Atlantic City. That would
potentially allow two new casinos to
be built in North Jersey – a proposed
Hard Rock casino at the Meadowlands
race track and another casino adja-
cent to the Liberty National Golf Club
in Jersey City.
The $1 billion Hard Rock casino
could be ready by next summer or fall
2016, officials said, and would create
an estimated 2,360 jobs during con-
struction and another 5,000 perma-
nent jobs. The Jersey City casino
would presumably create similar

question is: Would the North Jersey
casinos be sustainable long term? If
you look at just Atlantic City, the an-
swer would be a quick “no.” Four casi-
nos closed in the last year alone, and,
overall, casino revenue slips every
year.
But when you take a closer look at
the numbers, there are plenty of posi-
tives. If you take out the numbers for
the four casinos that closed, revenue
climbed about 8 percent in Atlantic
City in 2014 compared to 2013.
The Borgata, Atlantic City’s shining
star, continues to do well. Its revenue
of $687 million in 2014 increased 10.7
percent year over year, and was almost

who say it’s not North Jersey versus
South Jersey; it’s North Jersey versus
New York.
If we can build casinos in North Jer-
sey that offer everything that a place
such as the Borgata or Harrah’s in At-
lantic City offers, then our state is like-
ly to attract these people from the
North who are traveling to casinos in
other states instead of Atlantic City.
And since part of the revenue from
these proposed casinos would go to
help Atlantic City, it could be a win-
win for everybody.

Power washer stolen

from front yard
The following reports are on
file with the Moorestown Police
Department:
On May 18, a victim took a
Ryobi power washer
out of his shed and
placed it in the front police
yard, went inside for a
few minutes, and, report
upon returning, the
power washer was missing. The
value of the equipment is $300.
On May 23, a 24-year-old man of
Woodlynne was arrested and
charged with shoplifting $530.99 in
merchandise between December
2014 and May 23 from Sears in the
Moorestown Mall while employed
as a loss prevention officer. He was
released on a summons.
On May 23, as a result of a do-
mestic situation, a 48-year-old
man of Willingboro was charged
with simple assault. He posted 10
percent of $2,500 bail and was re-
leased.
On May 26, a 30-year-old man of
Haddon Heights was arrested and
charged with shoplifting and CDS
paraphernalia. He concealed
clothing valued at $86.97 from
Boscov’s in the Moorestown Mall.
He also had in his possession a
spoon and hypodermic
syringe. He was re-
leased on summonses.
On May 27, as a re-
sult of a domestic situ-
ation, a 42-year-old man of
Moorestown was arrested and
charged with simple assault. He
was released on $2,500 bail.
On May 13, a victim had her
iPhone 5 taken while working at
Lutheran Home on Main Street.
On May 15, a victim had her
wallet taken from a locker at the
Evergreens Nursing Home.
On May 21, arrested and
charged with theft for stealing
$940 from a cash register at
Macy’s in the Moorestown Mall
while employed between April 23
and May 21 was a 20-year-old fe-
male of Willingboro. She was re-
leased on a summons.

Summer Concert Series begins June 22

Summer is fast approaching,
which means relaxed evenings
for families. Despite the ever-in-
creasing demands placed on par-
ents and families, summer still of-
fers some retreat from the “school
year grind.” This summer, the De-
partment of Parks and Recre-
ation is proud to announce new
changes to an old summer fa-
vorite – the Summer Concert Se-
ries. This concert series has been
a staple of Moorestown commu-
nity life for more than 40 years
and has been a way for families to
relax after a long summer day.
This year, due to expanded
partnerships, the Summer Con-
cert Series will change the time
and location. The Summer Con-
cert Series is presented by the De-
partment of Parks and Recre-
ation and supported by the
Moorestown Community House,
the Moorestown Business Associ-
ation, MoorArts and Live Civilly.
Concerts will take place on the
lawn of the Moorestown Commu-
nity House on Mondays, June 22
through Aug. 10. Each Monday
evening the new “Kids Stage” will
begin at 6:30 p.m. and offer a vari-
ety of kid friendly activities and
entertainment. Concerts will fol-
low at 7:30 p.m. and will host mu-
sical talents from across the
Delaware Valley. Some evenings
will also offer previews of local
theater productions from
MoorArts, Moorestown Recre-
ation Summer Theater and
Moorestown Theater Company.
Admission is free, however, all
attendees are encouraged to bring
a non-perishable food item to help
Live Civilly support our local food
pantries “because hunger doesn’t
take summer vacation.” Remain-
ing true to the Live Civilly
mantra of “many hands make
light work,” each concert-goer is
asked to bring a non-perishable
item. It’s just another way Moore-
stonians are “people helping peo-
ple helping people.”
The Summer Concert Series is
an open air, community concert
series. Families are encouraged
to visit local restaurants for din-
ner and then proceed with lawn
chairs and blankets to the Com-
munity House lawn. Businesses
will be open later on Monday
evenings in an effort to attract
local shoppers and promote
“Shop Local” initiatives.

Concert Series is as follows:

When Thomas moved back to
Moorestown in 2014, he explored
visual art performance work and
decided to produce and direct a
theater piece in the local area.
“I love it. I really do. Moving
back home has afforded me the
opportunity to produce my own
work. Moorestown is great,”
Thomas said.
Thomas took it upon himself
to fund the production, hire ac-
tors, build the set, direct the play
and get a performance ready to
show audiences.
He chose “Out at Sea” as he
had seen some of his peers from
college perform it at their end-of-
the-year showcase, with minimal
costumes and set pieces, and fell
in love with it. He felt it was en-
tertaining, funny, stood on its own
and didn’t need high production
values to tell the story. It seemed
like a perfect fit for the new direc-
tor and producer in Moorestown.

long after the show has ended.
“I hope that the play creates a
dialogue between people who

when they were thinking about
ideas for fundraisers for their or-
ganizations. They met through
the AAC, but work together in
their mission to save animals.
They came up with Barkin’
Blues BBQ as a way to get some of
the younger audience out for not
only a good time, but to educate
them about animal adoption, res-
cue and organizations. Callahan
and Speeks feel the younger gen-
erations are important to reach
out to, as they are the ones who
will take over and get involved in
animal rescue.

checks; it is about getting people

Callahan said.
“It goes beyond the money and
creates connections. Volunteers
are the backbone of any organiza-
tion. We’re always looking to
bring people into the family,”
Speeks said. “If you have a couple
hours here and there, there is
room for you.”
At the Barkin’ Blues BBQ,
there will be food, drinks, music,
dancing and raffle baskets. There
will also be vendors selling pet
merchandise as well as psychic
readings.
However, the highlight of the
event is the band, the Blue
Hawks. They play fun rocking
blues and are a well-known New
Jersey band.
“Everyone in the band is amaz-
ing. The band makes the event,”
Speeks said.
All of the catering, done by the
Atlantic City Firemen, is donated
and the band donates its time as
well.
Although the event is held at a
private residence, Callahan
would like individuals to feel
comfortable.
“We want people to know they
can treat it exactly like a public
venue, even though it is at my
house. Come for the three hours.
Come for a band, have a few
drinks, have a burger and don’t
hesitate because it is a really wel-
coming group and we are all
bonded together by our love of
animals. They will definitely feel
comfortable here,” Callahan said.
Last year, they had about 100
people come out to the event. This
year they’d like to reach 120 or
130.
“For $40, to get to hear a great
band and eat delicious food and
drinks, I think people walked
away thinking that it was really
fun, a great deal and that they did
something good,” Speeks said.
