Reference Sheet: Google Sites

This reference sheet will lead you through the process of creating a WebQuest using Google
Sites. Google Sites includes a pre-made template for WebQuests, making the process easier.
Step 1. Log in to your Fairmont State Google account and visit https://sites.google.com/
to get started and then click on the CREATE button.

Step 2. Get your WebQuest site ready with the correct structure by nding the WebQuest template.
Click the Browse the gallery for more link.

Step 3. Click the Schools & education link. Scroll down the list until you nd the WebQuest
Template and click on it.

Step 4. Google Sites will show you a thumbnail of what a page looks like as well as a short
description of what the template oers. Click on Select to start using this template.

Step 5. Enter the name of your WebQuest in the box under the Name your site: prompt (you can
always change it later). When you are satised, click the CREATE button.

Step 6. The template includes two extra pages that are not necessary: Resources and Credits. You
can delete these pages. Visit these two pages in turn and then delete each by clicking on the
gray button that looks like a gear and clicking on the Delete page option.

Step 7. It will ask you if you are sure: just make sure that you are on either the Resources or
Credits page and then click on the DELETE button.

Step 8. After deleting the two pages, you will be returned to the Home page. Start editing this
page by clicking on the gray button that looks like a pencil .

Step 9. You may now type and edit the text pretty much as if you were working in Google Docs
or Microsoft Word by using the menus and formatting buttons near the top of the screen.

Step 10. All WebQuest pages should have at least one image at the top of the page. Insert the
image by rst clicking on the Insert menu and then clicking on the Image option.

Step 11. You will upload your images by clicking on the Upload Images button.

Step 12. Locate the image on your computer, and then once the image has been uploaded, click
on the OK button.

Step 13. Remember that if you are using an image from http://www.photosforclass.com/ you
do not need to include the source of the image. Otherwise, make sure that you include your
picture source and copyright information (if applicable) under the image.
Step 14. Once the image appears on the page, an editing bar appears that allows you to change
the size and layout of the image.

Step 15. You may want to decrease the size of the image and setting it to be centered on the page,
as in the screenshot below.

Step 16. When you are done editing the page, click on the Save button in the upper right corner
of the page.

Step 17. When you are ready to submit the link to your WebQuest, click on the Share button.

Step 18. To make sure that I can view your WebQuest, click on the Change link.

Step 19. Make sure that the button next to Anyone with the link is selected.

Step 20. You can leave the access setting as Anyone (no sign-in required) Can view. Click on the
Save button.

Step 21. Highlight the link address and then copy it by pressing [Ctrl]-[C], [Cmd]-[C], or
right-click and click Copy from the menu. You can now paste this link into TaskStream.
