Ulbrec Strainer Product Range

Ulbrec Standard Strainers are designed and
manufactured in Australia to suit the needs of the
chemical, food, beverage, petrochemical, process and
mining industries. Various types of strainers are
available, each type having specific attributes and
features to suit particular applications.
There is an economical strainer to suit your
requirements no matter how demanding the
application. If a standard design will not suit a
particularly arduous duty, Ulbrich will design and build
a strainer to suit your special needs.
All Ulbrec fabricated strainers are manufactured
generally in accordance with Code requirements and
can be provided with material traceability and
Statutory Approval documentation if required. All
strainers are hydrostatically tested and certification can
be supplied on request.
Each of the Standard strainer types are specified below,
individual brochures or technical data sheets can be,
supplied on request.
A100 Series
These strainers are manufactured in cast materials
iron, aluminium, bronze or 316 Stainless Steel, all are
fitted with stainless steel elements. Their construction
enables quick access to the element by means of a
single tee bolt and bridge clamp closure.
The gross element area is approx. 12 times pipe area.
Connection sizes available from DN 25mm to 65mm
screwed B.S.P. female also DN 65 & 80 flanged.
Pressure rating to 0.5 MPa.
Flow rates to 450 l.p.m.
GT Series
These strainers are manufactured in carbon steel or
stainless steel (304 or 316) and are fitted with stainless
steel elements. The element is easily accessible by
removing two tee bolts and the cover.
Connection sizes available from DN25 to DN80
screwed B.S.P. or N.P.T. female and from DN25 to
DN200 flanged to suit Customer requirements.
Pressure ratings to suit flange requirements, 1.05 MPa
as standard.
Flow rates to 4,500 l.p.m.
The GT Series are also available as single lever
operated duplex strainers.
HP/HL Series
Manufactured in carbon steel or stainless steel (304 or
316) with stainless steel elements, these strainers are
available with offset connections (HP Model) or inline
connections (HL Model). Two standard closures are
available, swing bolt type (Series 250) and stud bolt
type (Series 350).

A114 & A115 `Y' Strainers
The model A114 has a flat plate strainer element with a
gross area of approximately 3 times pipe area, the
Model A115 has a cylindrical element with a gross area
of approximately 9 times pipe area, either Model can
be supplied with carbon steel or stainless steel body
fitted with carbon steel or stainless steel element.
Connection sizes from DN50 to DN900 flanged to suit
Customer requirements.
Pressure ratings to suit flange requirements.
Flow rates to suit pipeline diameters at 3 m/s velocity.
Temporary Strainers
Available in two types, cone strainers and conical flat
end strainers. Both types can be supplied in carbon
steel or stainless steel. The standard element has
3.25mm diameter perforated material which can be
lined or covered with mesh, sized to the Customers
specification.
The gross area of each type is approx. 3 times pipe
area.
They can be manufactured for any size pipeline and for
any flange and pressure rating.
T Type Strainers
Two types are manufactured in carbon steel or stainless
steel. In-line units are fitted with either a flat plate
element, gross area approx. 3 times pipe area or a
bath tub shaped element, gross area approx. 4 times
pipe area.
The end of line units are fitted with a conical flat end
strainer element, gross area approx. 6 times pipe area.
They can be manufactured for any size pipeline, flange
type and pressure rating.
A.B.W. & M.B.W. Strainers
Automatic or Manual Backwash Strainers are fabricated
in carbon or stainless steel with stainless steel element
and internal trim. These units are epoxy lined as
standard. Elements have a gross area approx. 16 times
pipe area with filtration down to 150 microns.

P.S. Series Strainers
Pump Suction Strainers are economical, compact units
fabricated with carbon steel or stainless steel body and
element having gross areas varying from 4 to 9 times
pipe area.
These strainers can also be used on pressure
applications.
Connection sizes from DN50 to DN600 flanged to
customer requirements.
Pressure ratings to suit application.
Flow rate to suit pipeline diameters at 3 m/s velocity.

FEATURES

Duty
Can be manufactured in aluminium, bronze,

stainless steel or cast iron in threaded or flanged
style.
Maximum working pressure to 70 PSIG/0.48 MPa.

For all body materials except aluminium
(50 PSIG/0.34 MPa).
Higher working pressures can be provided for
some material types. Contact Ulbrich Products or
their agent to discuss possibilities.
Strainer basket
Designed for maximum flow rate and minimum
pressure drop, and the efficient collection of
foreign matter. Baskets can be easily removed for
cleaning without the use of tools.
Sealing gaskets
Gaskets can be supplied in material to suit most
products handled.
Cap fastening
The strainer cap can be easily and quickly
removed by releasing the stirrup clamp.
Applications
The most common application areas for ULBREC
A100 Series strainers are in the chemical, food,
beverages, petrochemical, process and mining
industries.
These units provide high volume contaminant
collection in either suction or pressure
applications. Refer to Duty above for pressure
ratings.
Special finish
In addition to strainer bodies being available in
different materials and styles, special external and
internal finishes are available.

FEATURES
Body
Design standards
The standard materials used in HP/HL bodies

are carbon steel and stainless steel. Both types
are fabricated to suit customer requirements,
relating to inlet and outlet locations, flanging
and material type.
Two pressure ratings available.
Strainer basket
Available in stainless steel or brass mesh, and
designed for maximum flow rate and minimum
pressure drop.
Baskets can be easily removed for cleaning.
Seals
Seals are available to suit most products
handled.
Closure bolting
Either stud bolts or swing bolts are used,
depending on the pressure rating of the
strainer.
Special designs
As well as offering strainers to meet specific
dimensional and application requirements,
Ulbrec also offer a range of H.P. strainers in
Duplex designs manufactured in carbon steel
and stainless steel to suit most products.
H.P. & H.L. series strainers are also available in
sizes over 10" (250mm), in Simplex or Duplex
styles.
Max. working pressure 150 PSIG/1.03 MPa @

70F/20C (Swing bolt closure/250 style).
Max. working pressure 225 PSIG/1.55 MPa @
70F/20C (Stud bolt closure/350 style). H.P. &
H.L. strainers are designed and tested generally
in accordance with AS1210-1997. Alternative
design codes, pressure ratings, and physical
configurations can be provided on request.
Special features
Support legs are fitted to 6" (150mm)
size strainers and above, and davit arms
to 10" (250mm) size strainers and
above, as standard.
Stainless steel units are normally manufactured
with carbon steel flanges faced with stainless steel.
i.e. All wetted parts are stainless steel.
Special finish
When specified, special internal and
external finishes are available to suit
most products and environments.
E.g. Epoxy, Neoprene, Hypalon, Galvanizing, etc.
Applications
The most common application areas for
ULBREC H.P. and H.L. SERIES strainers are in
the chemical, food, beverage, petrochemical and
process industries.

Liquid passes into the
strainer body, up into the
filter element, through the
filtered liquid chamber and
on to the strainer outlet.
Particle matter, larger than
the screen aperture size, is
collected on the inside of
the strainer element until
the differential pressure increases to
approximately 60kPa. This differential
pressure is shown on the gauge mounted in the
instrument panel. When the set differential
pressure is reached, the strainer will commence
the backwash cycle automatically.

the scour arm tube, into the backwash chamber
and through the outlet valve.
Filtering will continue at a slightly reduced

flowrate during the backwash cycle.

cycle automatically.
Backwash cycle
FEATURES & BENEFITS
The strainer backwash cycle has been designed

to provide flexibility of backwash duration and
can be regulated to give minimum backwash
time consistent with thorough cleaning.
Low Maintenance
When the backwash cycle is activated, the

backwash motor starts, the scouring arms
commence rotating and the backwash drain
valve opens. Filtered water then flows back
under full system pressure through the screen
into the scouring arm apertures, releasing the

manual cleaning of the strainer elements
normally associated with standard basket or Y
type strainer, thereby reducing manpower
requirement.
Continous Filtration
The Ulbrec Auto Backwash Strainer produces
continuous filtration of the process flow, even
during the backwash cycle. Although some loss

of flow occurs, it would normally be only 510%, dependant upon process conditions (ref.
BACKWASHING for further details).
The strainer offers a wide and practical range
of filtration screen sizes for the majority of
strainer applications. Screens can vary from
very large apertures, 25mm, to very small
apertures, 150 microns. Finer aperture sizes
are considered impractical in automatic
backwash units due to rapid clogging, and
hence excessive backwashing and consequent
high backwash losses. Finer screen apertures
are also inefficient in the filtration process as
they reduce the available open area of the
screen, thereby increasing differential
pressure and, in the backwashing process,
contaminants would be exceptionally difficult
to release from the very small apertures.
This would cause cumulative blocking and
extended periods of shutdown for manual
cleaning and maintenance.
Large filtration area

The Ulbrec ABW Auto Backwash strainers
are sized with large stainless steel elements to
minimise initial differential pressure. The
average screen size is approximately fifteen
times the standard connection pipe crosssectional area.
This large filtration area increases the time
interval between backwash cycles, thereby
decreasing the nett process fluid losses.
CONSTRUCTION
The Ulbrec Automatic Backwash Strainer
consists of the following major component
assemblies:
Strainer body
Fabricated carbon steel, (standard) or
stainless steel (optional)
The strainer body consists of a vertical
cylindrical shell with inline flanged inlet and
outlet connections, cover, and backwash drain
connection. All wetted parts are finished
with epoxy resin coating (carbon steel only).
The external coating comprises a blue oxide
zinc base primer; this provides the base for
finish coating to customers colour
requirements. (Optional external finish can
be provided to customer specification).
Strainer element
Fabricated perforated stainless steel.
Optional fine S.S. mesh or wedgewire
available if required.
The strainer element is a vertical cylindrical
screen that is located in the diaphragm of the
strainer body against an O ring seal. The
top of the screen is fitted with a plate and
bearing to locate the scour arm shaft.
Control panel
Polycarbonate waterproof enclosure.
The control panel is mounted on the front of
the strainer body near the top cover. It
contains a differential pressure gauge and
switch, programmable logic controller,
manual backwash button, alarm light and
normal operation light. Optional facility for
voltage free contacts are available.
Backwash mechanism
Fabricated stainless steel scour arm and shaft
with electric gearmotor and solenoid valve.
The backwash mechanism comprises a central
tube fitted with scouring arms extending to
the internal diameter of the strainer element.
This assembly is rotated by the electric
gearmotor drive fitted to the underside of
the strainer body. The backwash drain is
fitted with a solenoid valve.
Backwashing
The backwashing mechanism of these
Strainers offer strength and reliability of
function combined with high efficiency. This
simple system of backflushing is ideal for
water or seawater with hard particle
contaminants. For other applications or
where contaminant may be sticky or fibrous,
one of the many options available such as
wiper or brush assemblies, may be a more
suitable alternative, and should be discussed
with Ulbrich Products or their
Representative.
The backwash control system offers flexibility
of the backwash cycle by having an adjustable
differential pressure switch in addition to an
adjustable backwash cycle P.L.C. Standard
activation of backwashing is by differential
pressure but can be provided with time
control unit if required.
The backwash drain is sized to suit most
applications. However, the size and type of
the contaminant will determine the specific
application requirement. The size of the
backwash drain, together with the system
pressure, will determine the backwash losses.
APPLICATIONS
DIMENSIONS
In order to reduce the contaminant to

acceptable levels, treatment in a process
system or for acceptable disposal of waste
water, Ulbrec Auto Backwash Strainers
are designed for use in water and some
chemical applications.
These units are ideally suited to the
following applications:
Prefilters in water treatment systems for
the production of potable water.
Continuous process cleaning systems
where contaminants can vary from dirt
and grit to bottle tops and labels,
cigarette butts and general consumer
waste materials.
Primary flow filters in electro
chlorination systems for Power Stations.
Insurance filters for the protection of
downstream equipment and
instrumentation in fresh water and sea
water applications.
Effluent treatment system filters for the
reduction of solid and fibrous
contaminants in process water and
sewerage effluents.
Cooling water strainers in power
stations, drawing water from fresh water
streams/rivers and seawater containing
high levels of dirt, sand and organic
vegetable matter.
The standard Strainers are unsuitable for
suction duty applications unless they
operate with positive up stream pressure.

Bridge Clamp or YOKE Closure
The A100 Series strainers feature a Single Tee Bolt
bridge clamp closure (or yoke clamp closure)
This design offers very fast entry for basket
removal and maintenance.
Standard pressure rating = 70 PSIg (480 kPag)
Twin Tee Bolt Closure

The GT Series small strainers feature Twin Tee Bolt
closures.
This design also offers very fast entry for basket

Process Bolt Closure

The GT Series large strainers feature Process Bolt
closures on the GT150 and GT200 designs.

with a "Tommy Bar" and swing clear of the lid
without being fully undone.
Flanged Closure - Series 350

Many different Basket & Y-Type strainer feature
Flanged "Stud-Bolt" closures.
This design offers maximum design pressure
and security. We will use the lowest cost flange rated
to the required pressure unless otherwise specified.
Goliath Veelok Closure

The Goliath Veelok closure features a single
bolt quick action with a pivot pin for ease of
operation. The back of the flanges have a
machined taper and the clamps have a
corresponding internal taper. As the clamp is
closed tight, the flanges are drawn together.
