Dan Gutman of Haddonfield,
though 59 years old, is a child at
heart. One would have to be to be
the well-known author of childrens books such as The Kid
Who Ran for President, The
Genius Files, Baseball Cards
Adventures and the My Weird
School series.
When Gutman isnt writing,
he gives presentations to schools
in his free time, which is one of
his favorite parts of the job. Gutman gave one of his entertaining
presentations to Moorestowns
Our Lady of Good Counsel
School on Wednesday, June 3
where he talked to children
about his books, the process of
writing a book and following
their dreams.
Its kind of fun. Youre treated like a celebrity when coming
to schools. When at home, Im
treated like a regular guy, Gutman said with a laugh.
Were very excited he is here.
The kids love his books. Theyve
been looking forward to it all
year, and theyve all been reading
his books, Librarian Kristen
McKeaney said.
When Gutman was young, he
hated to read because he thought
it was boring and hard. It wasnt

plans Camp Firefly for grieving children
This summer, Moorestown Visiting Nurse Association will present Camp Firefly for grieving
children at Camp Matollionequay
in Medford. This weekend-long
overnight camp will start on the
morning of Saturday, Aug. 22 and
conclude on Sunday, Aug. 23.
The overnight camp is free,
and open to Burlington, Camden
and Gloucester county children
ages 7 to 14 who have lost a parent, sibling or any special person
through death and are seeking
support to help cope with grief.
Campers spend the weekend in
a caring, nurturing environment
with The Hospice of Moorestown
VNAs team of grief professionals
and volunteer counselors, as well
as peers who have experienced a
similar loss. Traditional camp activities such as swimming, canoeing, hiking, arts & crafts and
cookouts are combined with specialized bereavement activities

designed to help the children

overcome their grief and to cope
with the loss of their loved one. In
one particularly intense and moving activity, the children design
and build small boats containing
mementos of their loved one.
After dark, these boats are individually candle-lit and launched
from the shores of the campsites
lake.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Camp Firefly. To
date, more than 400 local children
have benefited from attending the
camp. Applications to attend in
2015 are currently being accepted.
Additionally, volunteer counselors ages 21 and up are being
sought to assist during the camp.
Adult volunteer counselors will
stay at Camp Matollionequay during the entire weekend and will
participate in all activities with
an assigned group of children.
Junior counselors, ages 16 to 20

are also being sought to help out

on-site during the camp. Younger
volunteers, ages 14 and up, may
choose to support bereaved children by working in the offices of
Moorestown VNA, helping with a
fundraising bake sale or preparing materials for the camp weekend. Appropriate training will be
provided for all volunteers.
Those interested should call the
Volunteer Department, at (856)
552-1300, extension 2165.
Camp Firefly provides a place
to remember lost loved ones and a
place to heal. For an application
and complete information about
attending Camp Firefly, or other
available bereavement support
services, contact Moorestown
Visiting Nurse Association.

his week has us thinking about

the future of our kids a lot.
High school seniors, eighth
graders and kindergarteners will all
celebrate graduations this week, closing one door behind them and opening
another in front of them.
Its a vast new world that these kids
and young adults are living in, one
that is drastically different from the
one in which their parents lived at
their age.
Technology has provided plenty of
good, plenty of opportunities that the
kids of even 10 to 20 years ago didnt
have. Its mind-boggling.
And its also potentially dangerous.
The Internet can give a person a voice
that can reach millions of people with
a few taps on a keyboard. In terms of
civic involvement, in research and in

other areas, this is something plenty of

us would have loved to have had when
we were younger. With the opportunity, though, also comes the potential for
long-lasting damage.
Kids dont often listen to their parents and teachers when they try to
teach them lessons. So maybe they can
learn a lesson from pop star Iggy Azalea.
Last week, posts that Azalea made to
Twitter four years ago have resurfaced, with screen shots of her posts
showing insensitive sexual and racist

remarks. As a result, Azalea cancelled

a scheduled performance at Pittsburghs LGBT Pride event last weekend.
The Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Network didnt march in the Pittsburgh
Pride parade because Azalea was
scheduled to perform.
Azalea, who turned 25 years old this
month, is facing the music for things
she posted as a 21-year-old.
Its a lesson we can all learn from
once you post it, its there forever.
Even though Azalea deleted those
four-year-old Tweets, they were still
available for someone to find.
So, kids, be careful what you post.
Be careful what you do online. It may
seem innocent now, but it could come
back to haunt you years down the line.

Dads arent always determined by biology, either. Maybe you have another influence in your life you would like to celebrate

road to the end of the school year,
that our start of summer bliss will

The Sun
Moorestown has produced a lot
of talented individuals. Most recently is Chris Newcomer, an
actor who performed in a Tony
Award-nominated
Broadway
show.
The Moorestown High School
alumnus and son of Councilman
Greg Newcomer, Chris recently
performed in The Visit, a musical featuring Chita Rivera, which
was nominated for five Tony
Awards. Although the show did
not win awards and the show has
closed, this seems like just the

start of Newcomers opera and

musical theater career.
Newcomer grew up loving musical theater, as it was in his
genes. His mother plays piano,
his brother plays the trombone
and his father loves to sing like
Frank Sinatra. He got involved in
theater when he was a child at his
church in Cherry Hill and continued throughout high school performing
with
MHS
and
MoorArts, which gave him a
scholarship to pursue his dream.
One of Newcomers biggest influences was getting to work with
Jeanne Haynes at MHS. She gave
him opportunities to perform big

in him the work ethic required to
really make those roles shine.
She has since come to each
Broadway show I've been in, and
that has been amazing to have her
see me carry her legacy through
to adulthood, Newcomer said.
At college, Newcomer earned a
bachelors in vocal performance
from Mason Gross Conservatory
at Rutgers and a masters in opera
performance from the Opera Studio at the University of Maryland. He started performing proplease see SHOW, page 14

fessionally as an opera singer out

of college, and in the last four
years started to get back into musical theater as well. His first big
opera role was Xerxes at the University of Maryland, and his first
big theater role was playing Mary
Sunshine in Chicago on Broadway.
For his role in The Visit, it almost didnt happen as he was on
the road with Chicago and his
contract conflicted with the
schedule. Luckily, they found a replacement and Newcomer was
able to be a part of The Visit.
The Visit is a musical based
on Friedrich Durrenmatt's satirical Swiss play of the same name.
It is the story of the richest
woman in the world who returns
to her destitute hometown offering financial assistance at what
turns out to be a terrible price. It
starred Rivera and was the last

collaboration between John Kander and the late Fred Ebb, who
wrote Chicago, Cabaret,
Kiss of the Spiderwoman and
more. Newcomer played Jacob
Chicken, a 70-year-old blind eunuch.
The whole cast is amazing,
but the best part for me has been
working with Chita Rivera. She is
a legend and is also one of the
most genuine and giving artists I
have ever known. She also loves
to laugh, just like me, so we have
a blast backstage, Newcomer
said.
The Visit was nominated for
Tony Awards in the categories
Best Musical, Best Performance
by an Actress in a Leading Role in
a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score (Music
and/or Lyrics) Written for Theatre and Best Lighting Design of
a Musical. When Newcomer
heard about The Visit being
nominated for these awards, he
was thrilled. He even got to perform at the Tony Awards.
To be recognized by our the-

ater community in that way is a

very special thing. When I got to
perform on the Tonys, that was
one of the greatest highs of my
life. Performing alongside Chita
on one of the most visible platforms our art form has to offer
was mind blowing, Newcomer
said.
Unfortunately, The Visit didnt win any Tony Awards. To
learn that they didnt win was
heart-breaking for Newcomer.
Another sad event was after the
Tony Awards it was announced
that The Visit closed on Sunday,
June 14.
Sadly that is the rollercoaster
that is show business, Newcomer said.
However, Newcomer is not
completely downtrodden. He is
hopeful people enjoyed the show
while it lasted. Also, he is looking
forward to continuing to do
beautiful thoughtful productions like this one.
To learn more and keep up
with Newcomer, visit his blog and
website chrisnewcomer.com.

Next council meeting is June 22

vironmental Advisory Committee and Princeton Hydro had for
the lake.
The Environmental Advisory
Committee would like to take out
the spatterdocks, start educating
the public, remove the algae, do a
fish study and study what is encroaching on the lake. It also
would like to take a look at the
three sediment tanks and four
rain guards to see what condition
they are in. And finally, the Environmental Advisory Committee
would like to do chemical and
physical testing on the lake.

From this presentation and the

proposal made by Princeton
Hydro on May 29, the council was
asked to approve $80,000 from the
Moorestown Open Space Recreation, Farmland and Historic
Preservation Trust Fund to be
used for the environmental improvements at Strawbridge Lake.
Council
unanimously
approved the resolution.
In other news:
Carew gave an update on
where the township is with the
Lenola Jeff Young Hockey Rink.
He believes with the rink at Wesley Bishop Park being reconstructed, the dasher board from
there could be used at the Jeff
Young rink, saving the township
money and still keeping the use of

it for residents. According to

Carew, there is still a lot of investigation to do with pricing and if
it would work from an engineering standpoint, but he wanted to
run it by council and the possibility of creating a group on this
project. Council members approved the idea and said to keep
them updated.
Lois F. Downey was reappointed for a three-year term as a
municipal judge.
Sophomores Anna Buss and
Christopher Folgia were named
as additional members to the
Recreation Advisory Committee.
The next Township Council
meeting is scheduled for Monday,
June 22 at 7:30 p.m. with a 7 p.m.
workshop at Town Hall.

traumatic, but he didnt realize it

right away.
He moved to Baltimore after
leaving the Marines and found
himself stuck between the gap of
his military life and civilian life.
Not knowing how to cope, he
went to the gym and drank, and it
ended up being counter-productive.
When a friend and former veteran who lost his leg and half of
his arm suggested and showed
him yoga, he found he was blown
away by the experience. He
learned the positions and breathing that was used in yoga could be
used in everyday life to help

Yoga for Vet classes have grown

and are becoming a nationwide
movement, according to Keller.
Since Ive been doing it, it has
absolutely grown. Its more acceptable and accessible now for
veterans to do yoga. Im trying to
get the word out and make options available, showing vets that
it is OK to do yoga. Its the way
you deliver it. I was ready to move
on from Baltimore. Im here and
Im happy, Keller said.
The classes are held weekly,
with no current end date, as
Keller is planning to teach the
yoga classes for as long as he is in
the area. Anyone can join at any
time as long as they can verify
service, which Keller can identify
with some questions. There is no
need to sign up online or have a
mat. Drop-ins are allowed and
mats can be provided. All vets
need to do is come and wear comfortable clothing for yoga.
Shine Power Yoga is located at

power through discomforts and

stress in a more organic and positive way.
Over the course of a couple
years, it took him from a fragmented alcohol abuser with anxiety and depression to a connected and put together person
again.
In 2011, Keller decided he
couldnt keep his experience to
himself and decided to train to
become a teacher. That summer,
he started teaching Yoga for Vets.
He spent four years building a
community there and created a
new sense of purpose and connection to veterans, others and
himself.
It saved my life. I was spiraling down an emotional rollercoaster, and then I learned I could
actually take charge of my own
healing organically without medication or alcohol. I could save
myself and empower others to do
the same thing. My life had taken
on purpose, Keller said.
Keller moved to Moorestown
last month after he graduated
from Towson University with his
masters degree in occupational
therapy and accepted a job in the
local area. He decided to start the
Yoga for Vets classes in South Jersey as he feels all veterans can
and should benefit from yoga.

Gutman supports local book stores

GUTMAN
Continued from page 1
began writing. He had been writing since 1978, but his first book
wasnt published until 1985, and
he didnt start writing childrens
books until 1993.
It makes you feel so good to
write some silly words on a page
that can change others lives for
the better. And that is why it feels
good to do what I do, Gutman
said.
Gutman now travels to schools
talking about his books and popular series, while giving the children a little lesson. He weaves information about his books in a
fun and creative presentation
while slipping in information
such as the process of creating a
book and how to write a story.
For his book series Baseball
Cards Adventures, Gutman
spoke about his first publication
experience with Honus & Me,
also teaching the children the
process of creating a book and
how to react to rejections.
To do this, he tells the story
about how he came up with the
idea of a boy who had the power
to travel through time through a
baseball card. For Honus & Me,
the boy used the rarest baseball
card in existence, the 1909 Honus
Wagner baseball card valued at
more than $2 million, and went
on an adventure with Wagner. He

then explained his research and

writing process before talking
about how he sent his manuscript
to multiple publishers, many of
whom rejected him. However,
HarperCollins wanted to publish
his book.
I get rejected a lot. But did I
give up? No. Never give up, Gutman said.
The book was very successful,
and he was asked to write a sequel. He wrote about famous players such as Babe Ruth, Shoeless
Joe Jackson, Satchel Paige and
Ted Williams. The final book in
the series is on Willie Mays,
which came out in March.
Another lesson he taught the
children was rejection does not
mean you give up. Instead, he
wants them to never give up and
keep trying, especially if theyre
passionate about it.
I hope in your lives, when you
get rejected for something someday, I hope you dont quit either.
You never know what might happen if you stick with it, Gutman
said.
Gutman used The Genius
Files series as an example on
how to write a story. According to
Gutman, he wanted to write an
action-adventure series about two
children going on a road trip, who
are being attacked by a bad guy.
He talked through the crazy and
interesting characters and settings, how he let his imagination
run wild, and how he got his
main characters in and out of

trouble. And of course, starting

and ending the books with a
bang.
He finished by speaking about
his My Weird School series,
which he was inspired to write by
wanting to write a series like
Judy B. Jones, but from a boys
perspective. These books talk
about the crazy adults in school
the main character A.J. encounters. They include the art teacher,
principal, nurse and even the
town mayor.
McKeaney hopes children who
saw Gutmans presentation walk
away with some of the lessons he
had to give.
I hope they take away from his
visit all of the things about writing he had to say, and even if you
get rejected, keep trying and
youll succeed, McKeaney said.
Though Gutmans presentation
taught children some lessons.
Gutman doesnt feel stories necessarily need a lesson or message.
Instead, he wants children to just
love reading.
I dont like to put messages in
my books. All I want to do is captivate kids so much that when they
pick up a book ... two hours later
they might look up and think,
wow that didnt even feel like
reading. That felt like a I was
watching a movie in my head.
And that is what I am trying to accomplish by getting kids excited
about reading, Gutman said.
Gutmans next My Weird
School book, called Ms. Cuddy
Is Nutty!, comes out on June 23.
He is also working on a new book
about the Titanic, though it is just
beginning. And Gutman doesnt
plan on stopping anytime soon.
Ill probably keep writing
books until kids stop reading my
books and publishers stop publishing my books. I love what I
do, Gutman said.
Gutman will be at the opening
for the new Haddonfield book
store called Inkwood Books on
June 20 at 1 p.m. to sign books.
The bookstore is located at 31
Kings Highway East in Haddonfield.
I try to support local bookstores when I can, Gutman said.

and his books, visit his website at
