The corporations and business play a major role in the development of a country.

These
corporations are not important for a countrys economy but also for the the development of its
people. Some people believe that the making as much money as possible is the sole resposiblilty
of the owners and CEOs of these companies. However, there exist some optimists in the society
who accede with the statement that corporations have a responsibility to promote the well being
of a society and I agree with the opinions of these sanguines.
Before taking an insight into this issue, some question that are austerely needed to be answered
are How does a corporations start? Who owns these corporations ? Why do they exist? The
answers to these questions can be summed up in a few sentences. A corporation starts with an
idea or a solution to an ongoing problem in the society. They can owned either by the
governments or by the private ventures and the sole purpose of their existence is earning money
by providing goods or services to the consumers.
Coming back to the pivotal point of the passage, a corporation , which is either eastablished or a
start up has some responsibility towards the society and the environment in the which they
flourish. As mentioned earlier , a corporation starts its business by analyzing and discerning the
needs of the common man. For example, A washing machine industy would have been started
after somebody thought that its cumbersome and tiring to wash clothes with hand or a
corporation that distributes energy in a particular area would have started to reconcile the energy
problems in that region.
An industry or a corporation is started only for the well being of the society, but unfortunately,
some money minded corporates and business tycoons have exacerbated the reputation of the
whole corporate community. Their lust for money never ends and their sole motive is to gain as
much profits as possible without being circumspect about the society and the environment.
Leather Mnufacturers, for example, are causing a serious threat to the environment. Similar other
industries, although working under the state laws are not at all concerned about the society and
are needed to be condemned.
To sum up, I believe, that apart from a few corporations, most of the corporates, who had started
their work for benefit and well being of the society are determined in their wagon and continue
to work for the well being of the society.

The owner of Movies Galore, a video rental store chain writes about the recent decline in the
profits of his stores. He purports by quoting the example of his store in downtown that
decreasing the operating costs by reducing the open time and dwindling the stock of movies in
the stores would compensate for the loss. The argument although has some valid points but is
weak in its assertions. There are some warrented and unwarranted assumptions that are needed to
be considered for the predicted result.
To begin with, The author in his argument says that the stores have faced a recent decline in the
profits. But the argument doesnot mention the time period of profit decline. Perhaps the stores
are facing the shortage of rentals due to winter or snow fall in that region. It would be helpful to
predict the cause of the downfall in profits, if the author mentions about the time duration for
which the stores have been facing the problem.
Additionally, The author cites an example of one of his stores in downtown, that managed to
reduce operating costs by reducing the stock and closing the store at 6 pm rather than 9 pm. But
this staretegy would not result in the increase in the profit. The customers who wish to rent a CD
of a 10 year old blockbuster would move to the next store., eventually exacerbating the
reputation of the store. Also, Closing the store early explicitly means reducing the probability of
customers arriving at the store. These measures would provide an ephemeral solution to the
ongoing problem. I would recommend the author to mention the peak hours of customers
visiting the stores so as to decrease the operating costs and find a solution to increasing the
profits.
Moreover, The author in the beginning of his argument mentions that the stores are famous for
special bargains and futher suggests that augmenting the prices might not be pragmatic.
However, If the stores are famous for bargains and discounts, then dilation in the prices of rent
would eventually lead to reconciling the decline in the profits at the stores.
To conclude, The argument in its current form is flawed and ill constructed. It could be better and
strengthened if the above mentioned points are taken in to consideration.
