Funding for School and Community Gardens

There are a number of bodies, including local borough and county councils, which
you can approach for funding. Large horticultural organisations and seed companies
also have an educational remit and will often supply things free of charge. Here are
the addresses of a few organisations you may wish to try:

Volvo Eco Adventure The Volvo Eco Adventure is an award scheme

for young environmentalists. The scheme

Alan Titchmarsh’s Gardens for Schools

Alan Titchmarsh’s Gardens for Schools was
Unit 1 Lower Wharf established in 2001 to help primary schools

Run by the Forestry Commission, this scheme
offers grants to help with the creation of new
woodlands and to encourage the good
management and regeneration of existing
woodlands.
All woodlands and forests can be considered
for grants under the EWGS. However, areas of
trees too small or narrow to be thought of as
woodlands will not be eligible. Normally the
woodland would have to be a quarter of a
hectare in area and at least 15 metres wide, but
smaller woods may be eligible if the aims of
the scheme are met.
Biodiversity action plans have identified that
the priorities are for wildlife and habitats in the
UK – funding from SITA Trust will help some
of these much needed projects to get started.
Two funds exist:
Large Projects: up to £175,000, which help to
achieve both national and regional biodiversity
targets and actions for UK habitats and species
Small Projects: up to £25,000 (overall project
including other funding sources not to exceed
£50,000) which will ideally address national
and regional issues, although local priorities
will also be considered.
The Association of Gardens Trusts exist in a
great many counties in the UK. Some are
heavily involved in education and offer grants
(typically £100 - £300) to schools for school
garden projects. To find the details of the

Environment Programme)

£2,500 for a special project will be awarded
