WELCOMING MESSAGE

The 5th East Coast Surgical Symposium will focus on the role of general surgeons and specialists in the
era of sub-specialization. General surgeons have traditionally handled a wide spectrum of surgical
conditions. Vascular, urology, trauma, hepatobiliary, upper GI and colorectal surgical patients are still
managed by general surgeons in most hospitals in Malaysia. This situation may change in the future
with provision for development of sub-specialization. Till this becomes a reality, the general surgeons in
most district level hospitals should be familiar with common problems encountered in various
subspecialties.
To address this issue the organizing committee has prepared a very attractive and informative
programme to update general surgeons towards better patient care and enhanced quality.
We have gathered both local and national speakers in these fields to share their experiences and
knowledge in this rewarding event.
An outstanding two-day programme will discuss common problems applicable to general surgeons,
general practitioners with a surgical interest, medical officers and registrars.
