Assignment # 2

Below are a number of questions that can be answered by using the techniques presented in the Healey
text (Chapters 1 10), as well as in the course lectures (1-8). Select the most appropriate statistical test,
compute the necessary statistics, and state conclusions/interpretations for each question.
You are to answer the questions as if you were in an examination situation,
i.e. NO COMPUTER calculations, include all formulae used, show your work as much as possible.
The questions are presented in random order. The questions and response codes are listed below.
Note that, in order to keep these tasks manageable, the sample is very small and some assumptions about
sample size may be violated in order to answer these questions. (70 points)
Problem #1:
a. Is there a statistically significant difference in average years of education in Ontario versus the other
regions of Canada?
b. Is there a statistically significant relationship between gender and whether or not the respondent was a
victim of a robbery?
c.

Estimate the average years of education for the entire population.

d. If Canadians currently average 11.5 years of education, is this sample representative of the general
population?
e.
