CARACTERISTICAS
FEATURES LIMITS
This region is bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean; on the east by the
border of Chile and Bolivia to trifinio Zapaleri milestone, and this milestone
Argentina from the south to the Atalaya hill that marks the boundary with the
Third region. To the north borders the Region of Tarapaca and south, with the
Atacama region.
The port city of Antofagasta is the regional capital and is divided into three
provinces: Tocopilla (Capital: Tocopilla), El Loa (Capital: Calama) and
Antofagasta (Capital: Antofagasta). It has nine communes.
This area is dominated by a climate of extreme dryness, which explains the
arid landscape.
It is the second with the broader territory.

con la frontera de Chile con Bolivia hasta el hito trifinio de Zapaleri, y con

sur, con la Regin de Atacama.
La ciudad y puerto de Antofagasta es su capital regional y est dividida en tres
provincias: Tocopilla (capital: Tocopilla), El Loa (capital: Calama) y Antofagasta
(capital: Antofagasta). Posee nueve comunas.
En esta zona predomina un clima de extrema sequedad, lo que explica la aridez
del paisaje.

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
The coastal plains: reaches larger in this region but south of Antofagasta is
interrupted, reappearing in the area of Caleta El Cobre. From there it follows
a continuous development to the Third Region.
The Cordillera de la Costa: is much higher and solid in the region of Tarapaca.
In fact, this region has the highest point in the country, such as the hills
Vicua Mackenna and Amazonas, in excess of 2,000 meters.

Las planicies litorales: alcanza mayores dimensiones en esta regin, pero al
sur de Antofagasta se ve interrumpida, reapareciendo en el sector de caleta El
Cobre. Desde ah sigue un desarrollo continuo hasta la Tercera Regin.
La Cordillera de la Costa: es mucho ms alta y maciza que en la Regin de
Tarapac. De hecho, en esta regin registra las mayores alturas del pas, como
son los cerros Vicua Mackenna y Amazonas, que sobrepasan los 2.000 msnm.
La Depresin Intermedia: Est representada en su mayor parte por el
desierto de Atacama y exhibe caractersticas similares a las de la Primera
Regin.
La Cordillera de los Andes y el altiplano: En esta zona la Cordillera de los
Andes alcanza sus mayores alturas, con cumbres que sobrepasan los 5.500
msnm. El altiplano contina con las mismas caractersticas topogrficas que en
la Regin de Tarapac.)

RIVERS
This region full endorheic (without reaching the sea basins) product, largely

(RIOS: Esta regin se caracteriza por un completo endorreismo (cuencas sin

del relieve, siendo el ro Loa la gran excepcin. Ros de cuencas endorreicas
importantes de esta regin son el ro San Salvador, el San Pedro y el Salado.)

It has a desert climate, with variations of sea to the mountains. On the

thermal oscillation, without precipitation, with clear skies and high dryness

Y sobre los 3.000 metros de altitud, se presenta un clima desrtico marginal
de altura, siendo el nico sector con pluviosidad, la que cae especialmente en
los meses de verano.)

NATURAL DISASTERS
The barrage of Antofagasta 1991, occurred at dawn on June 18, was one of
the most violent disasters that struck Antofagasta, located in the middle of

southeast of San Pedro de Atacama.
