Kennedy Hubbard shares her love of volleyball

Jeff Young Memorial Park to be home to new sand volleyball courts thanks to Kennedys Cause, Inc.
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Torrential
rain
hit
Moorestown last Tuesday night,
causing power outages and damage throughout the area. However, at Jeff Young Memorial Park,
Kennedy Hubbard, along with
many volunteers, did not let the
storm stop them from reaching
their goal.
Hubbard, a recently graduated
senior and volleyball player from
Moorestown High School, along
with many volunteers, has been
working hard the past few days to
get new sand volleyball courts
built within the township. They
were approved to be built at Jeff
Young Memorial Park and are to
be named in her and her non-profit foundations name Kennedys
Cause, Inc.
Its going to be amazing,
everyone is going to know that it
will be by us. Volleyball is a huge
part of my life, and everyone who
knows that is excited. This is
something that I feel Ive given to
the community, who has done so
much for me. This is just one way
to give back, Hubbard said.
Hubbard suffers from Lymphatic Malformation. Since birth,
she has had a large facial difference and a trach since her airway
is blocked. Six years ago, she cre-

School girls volleyball team and friends of Kennedys Cause, Inc. help dig up the sides of the sand volleyball courts being put in at Jeff Young Memorial Park in Lenola on Tuesday, June 23 before the storm.
Volunteers came out to help with the courts that resident Kennedy Hubbard helped get moving.
ated Kennedys Cause to raise
funds for medical research to find
a cure for Lymphatic Malformation and assist families facing financial struggles due to medical

expenses that aren't covered by

insurance.
Despite the Lymphatic Malformation, Hubbard was inspired to
play volleyball and wanted to join

from watching her sister play.

And play she did, as she has been
the starting setter on her high
school varsity team for two years
as well as played four years of

club
volleyball.
Volleyball
has
saved
Hubbard in so
many ways.
The sport has
given her selfconfidence
and

ships that she
would
have
never had.
Ive known Kennedy since I
was in third grade. A lot of us
know her through school and the
volleyball program. She is a phenomenal volleyball player; she is
actually going to play volleyball
at Stockton. Everyone has grown
to know her through the community and has looked up to her and
watched her grow. She has really
turned into a phenomenal person, said Rachel Fordham, a
MHS graduate and volleyball
player.
Honestly, if it werent for the
sport, I wouldnt be who I am
today and I wouldnt have the
friends and support system that I
do. With me going off to college
next year, I just wanted to give
back to the local community. And
why not bring volleyball into it?
Hubbard said.

Council gets update

on hockey rink progress
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The Moorestown Township
Council meeting on June 22 provided council with an update on
the Lenola Jeff Young Memorial
Park hockey rink and the announcement of a dedication ceremony for David Gentile on July 13
at 6:30 p.m.
Scott Taylor, the townships
landscape architect and vice president of Taylor Design Group,
gave a presentation on the research he has done in regard to
the hockey rink.
At a June council meeting,
Township Manager Scott Carew
mentioned the Jeff Young Memorial Park hockey rink, which was
demolished last year, could be put
back into commission and a portion of the Wesley Bishop Park
dasher boards could be used.
At this meeting, Taylor gave
further details and proposed recycling the hockey rink frame at
Wesley Bishop Park, which will
be removed, and relocating that to
the rink at Jeff Young Memorial

Park. The rink at Jeff Young Park

is smaller than the Wesley Bishop
Park rink, however the frame
should still be able to be used. The
dasher boards would have to be
replaced.
There is still some budgeting
that needs to be worked out, according to Carew, such as the
dasher boards themselves. But by
using the frame, it would reduce
the money needed for the Jeff
Young Memorial Park hockey
rink.
As the Jeff Young Memorial
Park rink is not used by an identifiable athletic association, there
is no identifiable group for maintenance of the facility. The township is looking to put together a
group to donate time and money
for it. According to Carew, there
have been people from Lenola
who have expressed donating and
volunteering time and effort to
the rink.
The rink at Wesley Bishop
Park is staying a rink as well.
However, this rink is used by

Summer has finally arrived!

Whether you finished the school
year at a breakneck pace or limping over the finish line, you made
it! Now the question is what to
do?
Luckily for Moorestown residents, there is no shortage of programs and activities available for
those of us who summer in
Moorestown.
The Department of Parks and
Recreation is pleased to offer a
multitude of programs, not the
least of which is the continuation

of the Recreation Open Gym and

the new summer addition, Chillin on the 3rd Floor, sponsored
by the Moorestown Youth Outreach Association. The Recreation Open Gym runs Monday
through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to
5:30 p.m. and offers Moorestown
youth an indoor space to play basketball. Additionally, the continued support of Live Civilly and
the Moorestown Ministerium
provides healthy snacks for youth
in attendance. The Open Gym
program has grown steadily over
the last year, and the Recreation
Center is pleased to announce its
continuation during the summer

months.
This summer, the Moorestown
Youth Outreach Association is
pleased to announce Chillin At
The Rec program. During the
hot summer months, area youth
are invited to visit the Church
Street Recreation Center and
enjoy games and activities with
teen volunteers. Board games,
foosball, ping pong, pool arts and
crafts will be available on the
third floor of the center. This relaxed (and cool) environment
gives Moorestown Youth another

THE MOORESTOWN SUN JULY 17, 2015

in our opinion

Happy Fourth of July

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies cant seem to win a baseball game anymore things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.

Independence Day 2015

We give thanks for all the liberties we
have as Americans. We give thanks for
the sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

Imagine what it must be like to live

in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Congress and where the office of the president have functioned and survived for
239 years.
We live in a nation where, for the

most part, were free to do as we please.

This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liberties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

Painting perfection: Moorestown student

wins first place in congressional contest
Terry Nguyen wins for acrylic painting Dear Friend, depicting a soldier and his dog
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The first time someone enters a competition, it isnt often they win. Many times it
takes several tries, but not for Moorestown
rising 10th grader Terry Nguyen.
With her first competition submission,
Nguyen won first place in the 3rd Congressional District as part of the nationwide
Congressional Art Competition 2015 sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives.
The competition rewards talented high
school students for their artistic abilities
and dedication.
I was very excited and happy to win because it was my first art competition that I

ever participated in,

Nguyen said.
Nguyen has always
liked art. It brings
peace to her mind and
urges her to utilize
maximum power to
come up with new and
creative ideas.
In fourth grade, she
NGUYEN
began taking art classes outside of school.
There, she learned the fundamentals and
improved her art skills.
I have loved art since I was young. I
started taking art classes outside of school
when I was in fourth grade because it gave

peace to my mind and allowed me to think

outside of the box. After Im finished, I feel
very proud of it and I just enjoy looking at
the work I have done. Its been a long-time
hobby of mine, Nguyen said.
She learned about the contest through
her teacher John Shing, who owns a private studio she goes to every week. He mentioned she should try out and she decided
to do so.
With only a month to prepare, as she
was a little late knowing about the contest,
Nguyen worked every day, at least an hour
and a half on the weekends and about an
hour during the week.

For her idea for the painting,
Nguyen thought about America
and asked herself what would
represent it well.
She was inspired when she
read a news article about the
farewell of Judge, a K-9 dog. She
was touched by the bond between
a police officer and his dog, as

well as their services. Nguyen

was also inspired by one of her favorite movies Hachi, which
centers on the special bond between Hachi, a dog, and his
owner. So she painted a soldier
and the bond between him and
his dog.
Nguyen started off with a
sketch, using references from
textbooks, movies, articles and
the Internet. Then she painted
her work with acrylic paint on
canvas.
After the piece was done,
Nguyen stood back and gave it a
good, hard look. She wanted to
highlight the special bond between the canine and handler, so
she decided on Dear Friend as
the title.
It is simple, two words, but to
me, I think they hold a lot of
meaning to them, Nguyen said.
According to Nguyens description: "This painting is focused on
the deep and affectionate bond be-

tween a soldier and his dog companion. A moment of their peace

and happiness is captured as the
resting soldier leans and holds
his German shepherd while facing toward the horizon. Despite
the horror and fear of warfare,
their presence provides a sense of
loyalty, friendship, reliance, protection and comfort for each
other. In mind, body and spirit,
the connections between these
two friends are weaved intangibly.
Nguyen was very excited and
happy to enter her first competition and didnt want to disappoint
herself. She was satisfied with
her work, but didnt expect to
win.
About a month after submission, Rep. Tom MacArthur called
and congratulated Nguyen. She
was ecstatic.
I feel very proud of it because

Group working hard to finish courts

GROUP

Hubbard approached Cindi

Britton of the Department of
Parks and Recreation with her
idea for the sand volleyball
courts. With Brittons help, Hubbard pitched her idea to the
Recreation
Advisory
Board,
which was in favor of it and
brought it to township council,
which unanimously gave the
sand volleyball courts its blessing.
Nobody didnt like the idea,
Britton said.
Jeff Young Memorial Park in
the Lenola section of the town
was chosen for the courts as there
was the space for them. The
courts are built to regulation
NCAA sand volleyball standards.
It is an awesome location.
There are a lot of people in the
area who can benefit from these
courts, Britton said.
I live in the Lenola section of
town. When we lost the hockey
rink, it was a hard blow because
my kids and the neighborhood
lost a place to play. With these
courts, we are gaining another
athletic facility down this end of
town and I think it is great, MHS
volleyball coach Scott Atkinson
said. As a volleyball coach, I
think it is great that were going
to have sand courts that we can
get on and train on. Volleyball is
one of the unique sports that you
can play well past your high
school career. Now it will be giving our adults the opportunity to
go and out play on sand in really
one of the best facilities away
from the beaches.
Hubbard, Britton and many
other volunteers gave their time
last week to put together the
courts, despite the storm on
Wednesday. Theyve been working hard to get the courts done
and up and running as soon as
they can.
Everything for the courts was
donated. The township donated
the plot of land; Sam Schlindwein
Excavation removed the 400 tons
of dirt and provided the 400 tons
of sand; The Kennedy Companies

donated landscaping fabric and a

drainage pipe; Sports Imports donated the nets, poles and anchors;
Scott Mooney of the Cherry Hill
Volleyball Club, and Kennedys
Cause made a monetary donation; and Moorestowns Department of Parks and Recreation,
girls and boys high school volleyball teams, Lenola firefighters,
Kennedy Cause volunteers and
high school students all came out
as volunteers.
I think this is wonderful. She
got so much from volleyball. It is
wonderful to see all of these people coming forward for Kennedy,
Britton said.
For her hard work, the volleyball courts are being named in
Hubbards and her foundations
honor.

I think the fact that it is going

to have Kennedys name on it,
with everything shes given to the
community
just
by
being
Kennedy, will be nice. To have
something here in her name for
people to have her memory in
their minds for a very long time is
outstanding, Atkinson said.
As of Thursday, June 25 the
courts were still being put together, but Hubbard and Britton
hoped to have them done within
the next few days. When they
open, the courts will be available
for use by all.
To learn more about the courts
as well as Kennedys Cause, visit
the Facebook page Kennedys
Cause or www.kennedyscause.
com. Donations can be made
there as well.

hockey associations as a competitive rink and is up to official size

and standards. It is in need of an
update because the terrain under
the rink has some issues and the
township must take out the entire
rink to rebuild it. The township
received a $250,000 grant from the
county for the cost.
At the meeting, it was also announced the township will be
having a dedication ceremony for
David Gentile at the Recreation
Center Lobby on July 13 at 6:30
p.m. before the next Moorestown
Township Council meeting.
Gentile was a Moorestown
High School football player who
was paralyzed from the neck
down in 1979. Gentile died in 2001
and his mother donated the funding for a 15,000 square-foot
skatepark to be built in his name
in Moorestown. Last year, the
David Gentile Skatepark was
taken down.
Not wanting Gentiles name to
disappear, township council decided to move his name to the tennis courts at Maple Dawson Park
where Gentile used to play when
he was a child.
For this occasion, the township
is holding a ceremony, inviting
Gentiles mother and sister to
come, where there will be a
plaque placed on the wall inside
the Recreation Center lobby in
his name as well as a sign placed
at the tennis courts.
The Recreation Center is located at 111 W. 2nd St.

RECEPTION
Continued from page 10

Special to The Sun

Moorestown rising 10th grader Terry Nguyen won first place in the
3rd Congressional District as part of the nationwide Congressional
Art Competition 2015 sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives for the above acrylic painting, Dear Friend, depicting a soldier
and his dog.

I put a lot of effort into the piece.

Im really glad all of my hard
work paid off in the end, Nguyen
said.
After the phone call, Nguyen
received a letter inviting her to
the Congressional Art Competition Winners reception in Washington, D.C., for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Capitol
Building on June 24.
Nguyen isnt sure she will pursue a career in art.
Honestly, not sure what I want
to do. I really do hope that I can
keep (art) throughout my life and
still have time for it. Im not sure
if it is career option for me, but I
still believe art plays a major role
in our industry today, Nguyen
said.
