the board.
Ten years after what became known as the Earth Summit (the 1992
United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in
Rio de Janeiro) the World Summit on Sustainable Development
(WSSD) will be held in Johannesburg in September 2002. There, the
UN will draw up a balance-sheet setting out the agreements reached
in Rio and the subsequent outcome of those agreements. The most
urgent task on the agenda will be to give fresh impetus to global
environmental policymaking and drive forward efforts towards sustainable development. Governments and business enterprises alike
will give an account of the contribution they have made over the
past decade to fighting poverty, conserving natural resources and
shaping our lives in such a way that future generations will inherit a
world worth living in.
At the 1992 conference in Rio de Janeiro, Volkswagen was represented
by, among others, the then Chairman of the Board of Management,
Dr. Carl Hahn. In preparation for the forthcoming follow-up conference, management and plants are taking stock of progress. At the same
time, above all at the companys production plants in newly industrialising countries, new initiatives are getting under way. At many
plants, involvement in working groups for a Local Agenda 21 provides
a means of working together with the authorities and local residents
to help safeguard the future of the plants concerned.

Environmental Policy Environmental Policy & Management
Volkswagen develops, manufactures and markets motor vehicles worldwide with the aim of safeguarding personal mobility.
The company accepts responsibility for the continuous improvement of the environmental compatibility of its products and
for the increasingly conservative use of natural resources, with due regard to economic aspects. Accordingly, the company
makes environmentally efficient, advanced technology available worldwide and brings this technology to bear over the full
life cycle of its products. At all its corporate locations, Volkswagen works hand-in-hand with society and policy-makers to
22
23
shape a development process that will bring sustainable social and ecological benefits.
Basic Principles
1
It is the declared aim of Volkswagen in
all its activities to restrict the
environmental impact to a minimum
and to make its own contribution to
resolving environmental problems at
regional and global level.
2
It is Volkswagens aim to offer highquality automobiles which take equal
account of the expectations of its
customers with regard to environmental
compatibility, economy, safety, quality
and comfort.
3
In order to safeguard the long term
future of the company and enhance its
competitive position, Volkswagen is
researching into and developing
ecologically efficient products, processes
and concepts for personal mobility.
4
Those responsible for environmental
management at Volkswagen shall, on
the basis of the companys environmental policy, ensure that in conjunction
with suppliers, service providers,
retailers and recycling companies, the
environmental compatibility of its
vehicles and production plants is subject to a process of continuous improvement.
6
Providing frank and clear information
and entering into dialogue with
customers, dealers and the public is a
matter of course for Volkswagen.
Cooperation with policy-makers and
the authorities is based on a fundamentally proactive approach founded on
mutual trust and includes provision for
emergencies at each production site.
7
5
The Volkswagen Board of Management
shall, at regular intervals, check that
the companys environmental policy
and objectives are being observed and
that the Environmental Management
System is working properly. This shall
include evaluation of the recorded
environmentally relevant data.

The Polo
Unswerving Focus
At the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA),
Volkswagen took the wraps off the fourth
generation of the Polo. This is our rst
production car with plastic underbody
panelling and integrated spoiler. A closer
look at the underbody of this new model
will illustrate how three of the seven
environmental objectives of the
Technical Development department (see
page 62) are applied in practice.
Goal number one regarding materials
was met by reducing the amount of
polyvinylchloride (PVC) in the underbody
panelling, while the use of completely
recyclable plastic panelling complies
with the legal requirements on end-of-life
vehicles and thus with environmental
goal number three. The underbody panelling with integrated spoiler reduces
drag in the underoor area, saves weight
and reduces lift at the rear. These three
factors in turn reduce fuel consumption
and are thus in line with goal number four.
The Polo
The other four environmental goals, too,
have been taken into account in the
design of the new Polo. The use of laser
welding technology and the replacement
of PVC seam sealing by a special type of
coating help to make the production
process more eco-friendly. The petrol
engines comply with Euro 4 emission
standards, while the turbodiesels meet

the road in Germany now carry the
Volkswagen badge. In the past, the conversion was always carried out by outside companies. The Golf Variant 2.0
BiFuel model is the first natural gas
vehicle which is 100 percent factorybuilt at Volkswagen to the same manufacturing and quality standards as other Volkswagen models.
With its bi-fuel drive concept, the natural gas Golf can run on either petrol or
natural gas. Innovations include the
electronic engine management, with
full electronic accelerator operation in
both fuel modes, a sequential multipoint injection system which ensures
compliance with current emissions
requirements and natural gas fuel tanks
made of carbon-fibre-reinforced resin.
The tanks, located in the spare wheel
recess, have a capacity of 86 litres and
are much lighter than steel tanks,
although every bit as strong. The fuel
tank shut-off valves incorporate the
manual and the electromagnetic cut-off
functions, the fuse and the flow governor in a single unit.
The BiFuel Golf consumes approximately eight litres of premium petrol or 5.73
kilograms of gas per 100 kilometres. CO2
emissions in natural gas mode are
approximately 18 percent less than in
petrol mode (see table). Volkswagen
hopes that with all this going for it, the
BiFuel Golf will help to spur a rapid
increase in the number of natural gas
vehicles on German roads, which currently stands at approximately 10,000.
The number of natural gas filling stations in Germany is scheduled to rise
from 220 at present to over 300 by the
end of 2002.

The Bora
Volkswagen has made substantial progress on the diesel
engine front. The Lupo 3L TDI was the first dieselengined model from Volkswagen to comply with the
Euro 4 emissions standard although this is not due to
come into force until 2005. Now the company offers two
more Euro 4-compliant diesel models from the Golf and
Bora ranges, featuring the 74 kW TDI engine and manual
transmission. The key to progress lies in a new generation of injectors with improved hole geometry for even
finer fuel atomisation, along with the use of modified
pistons and valves. Together, these measures reduce the
various types of emissions governed by law by between
17 and 50 percent compared with the levels prescribed

Bora HyMotion
The Bora HyMotion is the first zero emission
vehicle presented by Volkswagen in the USA. The
silent electric drive train, featuring a fuel cell
and an electric motor with a power rating of
75 kW, allows higher efficiency than conventional internal combustion engines. The fuel tank of
the prototype, unveiled at the inauguration of
the California Fuel Cell Partnership in November
2000, holds 50 litres of liquid hydrogen, giving
the car a range of 350 kilometres.

use of resources.
At the Paris Motor Show, AUTO-ZEITUNG talked to Dr. Ferdinand Pich, Chairman of the
Volkswagen Board of Management, about the one-litre car, Volkswagens model policy, the
decision to go for 16 rather than 18 cylinders and other new developments in the engine eld.
AUTO-ZEITUNG: Dr. Pich, the
mysterious one-litre car has been
making headlines for some time now.
Can you tell us any more about it?
Dr. Pich: Some years ago, I said that we
were going to build three-litre, two-litre
and one-litre cars. Today you can buy the
three-litre Lupo. We have shelved the
two-litre project. It was a very compact
four-seater, and the design was not so
attractive. As for the one-litre car, all I
said was that I would be driving one while

In a parallel hybrid drive system, the motor rating is determined by the functions to be
performed. For example, if the objective is only to provide additional torque for
acceleration, a rating of 10 to 20 kW is adequate, but if the motor is to power the
vehicle without any help from the internal combustion engine, it will need to deliver
between 30 and 50 kW. The output required also determines the size of the battery.
All the functions listed above can be performed by a hybrid drive system.
