Finding your MAC Address

Some Background: A MAC address, also called an Ethernet ID or Physical Address, is a unique identifier that all network devices have.
The Harvard open networks use MAC Address filtering in order to control access, so you must, therefore, register your wired or
wireless device's unique address first. (FYI - The term "MAC" is an acronym and has nothing to do with Mac/Macintosh computers. All
wired/wireless devices have a MAC Address, regardless of their make or brand.)
To Register: Physics Computing Services does not control or maintain these systems. This information is as a courtesy to department
members. You will need to register your device through the Autoreg system. if you have problems registering or connecting your
device, please contact FAS-IT at 5-9000, by emailing help@fas.harvard.edu or by visiting the help desk in the Science Center (B14).
NOTE: Some Dell laptops need to be on AC power for the wired adapter to show in the listing described below.

Click 'Start'
In the Search box, type "cmd" (no quotes) and hit Enter
A command prompt will open. Type "getmac /v" (no quotes) and hit Enter
Among the information will be one or more listings:
Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection is a wired adapter.
Ethernet Adapter Wireless Network Connection is a wireless adapter.
Look for "Physical Address" for the adapter you wish to register. That is its MAC address.

Click the 'Start'

Select 'Run' and type "cmd" (no quotes) and hit Enter
A command prompt will open. Type "ipconfig /all" (no quotes) and hit Enter
Among the information will be one or more listings:
Ethernet Adapter Local Area is a wired adapter.
The wireless adapter will be named for the brand or type (or labeled 'Ethernet Adapter Wireless Network Connection'.
Look for "Physical Address" for the adapter you wish to register. That is its MAC address.

Open 'System Preferences'

Select 'Network'
Choose the interface you want to register: Built-In Ethernet or Airport
Click' Advanced'
Select the 'Ethernet' tab ('Hardware' on 10.7)
10.5-10.6 - "Ethernet ID" shows the MAC Address for this interface
10.7 - "MAC Address" shows the MAC Address for this interface

Open a shell/terminal window

Type "ifconfig -a" (no quotes)
Determine which interface you need.
"Ethernet HWaddr" shows the MAC Address for this interface

Look for 'Wi-Fi Address'
