Producers in areas that have experienced heavy rains may have concerns about nitrogen loss in
corn fields. Nitrogen losses occur by two main pathways: denitrification (gaseous loss of N) and
leaching of nitrate from soil through water leaving the tile line or into groundwater. An estimate This weeks ag report is
can made on the loss potential, which is based sponsored by:
on N source, time of application, soil temperature, and number of days that soils have remained saturated.
1135 STATE RT. 29
Most nitrogen that is lost from a field is in the
GREENWICH, NEW YORK, 12834
nitrate form during wet conditions. Time of trans(518) 692-9611 FAX - (518) 692-2210
formation to nitrate is dependent on the type of
N fertilizer applied. Anhydrous ammonia is less
susceptible to loss since it converts to nitrate
rather slowly. Urea-ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution has about 25% as nitrate at application time
has a greater risk for loss than anhydrous.
Soils have been warm enough that some transformation to nitrate may have already occurred this
year depending on application date. However, the nitrate N will not be lost by denitrification unless
soils have remained saturated long enough. Risk of loss is minimal for soils that remain saturated for
one day, moderate risk for two days of saturation, and a substantial risk for three or more days of
saturated conditions. Standing water is evidence of saturated soils, but even soils without standing
water are considered saturated if an individual cannot walk across without making footprints.
So the factors are: What N product was used. When was it applied. Soil moisture content. How far
along is the crop. Re-application could be considered, but not if the crop is well advanced.

The theme for this years parade is PROUD TO BE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE. The

Ratification. By January 9, 1788, five states of the nine necessary for ratification had approved the Constitution--Delaware,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. But the
eventual outcome remained uncertain in pivotal states such as
Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. On February 6,
withFederalists agreeing to recommend a list of amendments
amounting to a bill of rights, Massachusetts ratified by a vote
of 187 to 168. Although Massachusetts was now safely in the
Federalist column, the recommendation of a bill of rights was
a significant victory for the anti-Federalists. Six of the remaining states later appended similar recommendations. The United
States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. It was ratified by nine
states in July of 1988. By December
1791 the Bill of Rights was ratified
by 3/4 of the states.

METTAWEE RIVER THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES
TOUR DATES FOR OUT OF THE PAST: CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE METTAWEE JOURNEY Performances will take place at outdoor venues in upstate New York and
nearby Vermont and Massachusetts, and are scheduled from July
9 through July 21 (schedule attached). The production will include scenes and songs from four decades of Mettawee productions. There will be appearances by Aristophanes gluttonous dung
beetle, as well as Brechts forlorn lovers in THE CAUCASIAN
CHALK CIRCLE . The world will be created on the back of a
turtle; the great Irish sea god Mannanon will declaim the tragic tale
of Phaedra; and Grandmother Earth will send Nanabozho off to
get the world ready for humans, Archy the cockroach and his lowly
associates will share memorable moments from their illustrious
careers, and two long lost brothers will be reunited in VALENTYNE
AND ORSON . All these encounters will incorporate an abundance of Mettawees signature masks, puppets and giant figures.
According to Mettawee Artistic Director Ralph Lee, These headstrong characters have been clamoring to be let out of their boxes
for another fling in front of their fans, so I finally decided to let
them have their way. Here goes! I take no responsibility for their
behavior. For more information about the Mettawee River Theatre Company, including a full schedule of this summers outdoor
tour, visit the companys web site at www.mettawee.org.

CHAPMAN MUSEUMS SUMMER STODDARD MINIEXHIBIT FEATURES CAMP LIFE Some of the most intriguing photos that S. R. Stoddard took are images of camp life in
the Adirondacks in the 1870s and 80s. From his own excursions
in the mountains Stoddard was quite familiar with the rustic camping experience of that time. In his guide books he offered practical
advice for new campers, including the essentials of a complete
outfit. His photos capture the full range of camping options from
small lakeside tent sites to permanent camps that featured log leantos and even kitchens. The Chapman Museums new Stoddard miniexhibit, which will be on display through September 13th, features fifteen images of camp life ranging from Lake George to
Raquette Lake. Included are photos of the 1887 American Canoe
Association campsite on Lake Champlain, The Antlers and Camp
Pine Knot, and evening entertainment around Adirondack campfires. Also included in the exhibit is a small publication, Camp Life,
Twelve Photo-Gravures from Originals by S.R. Stoddard, published
in 1892. Stoddard sought to earn new revenue from his photographs, and photogravure offered him the opportunity to present
his works as more than mere souvenirs; rather, they were works of
art. Wrote the book reviewer for a literary magazine, The Writer,
Mr. Stoddard is unexcelled as a photographer of natural scenery,
and his pictures of woods and camp life are simply delightful. No
one who has ever traversed the Adirondack lakes and rivers or
camped in the woods of Maine can fail to be attracted by the charm
of these pictures.... Camp Life will be a perpetual delight to any
lover of outdoor life who may be fortunate enough to become its
possessor. The Chapman Historical Museum is located at 348
Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10
am to 4 pm, and Sunday, noon to 4 pm. For more information call
(518) 793-2826 or go to www.chapmanmuseum.org.
