Seen Any Wild Turkey Broods? Report

Your Sightings To NH Fish & Game____
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is asking for the
public's help in tracking wild turkey broods in New Hampshire
this spring and summer. It's easy to take part. If you observe
groups of turkeys with young between now through August 31,
2015, report your sightings to Fish and Game at its web-based
turkey

Last year (2014), summer brood survey participants reported seeing 724 broods totaling 4,646 turkeys. The average hatch date in
2014 was June 19. Biologists are especially interested in getting
more reports of turkey broods in the three northernmost New
Hampshire counties (Coos, Carroll and Grafton).
The term brood refers to a family group of young turkeys

accompanied by a hen. New Hampshire hens generally begin laying eggs sometime from mid-April to early May and complete
their clutch of about 12 eggs in early to mid-May. Incubation lasts
for 28 days, and most eggs hatch from late May to mid-June. If
incubating turkey eggs are destroyed or consumed by predators,
hens often lay a replacement clutch of eggs that hatch late June
through late July. Reports of adult male turkeys are not being
requested at this time.
Many factors can affect turkey productivity in any given year.

highly variable, survival of the annual hatch of wild turkeys is
also highly variable.
Turkey populations depend on a large annual influx of young

turkeys to sustain themselves over time, so the number of young
turkeys that survive to be recruited into the fall population is of
great interest to turkey managers. A large sample of turkey brood
observations collected throughout the summer can provide turkey
managers with insight into the size of the graduating class of
turkeys that will become adults.

This morning a young bear was

were within twenty feet of him
watching his rump twist and turn

at the trunk. When he finally
sensed us, he turned around with
a look of shock and started to
run off. Perhaps it was because
Atticus and I were sitting, and
not chasing him, or something
else altogether, but after five
quick steps, the bear looked over
his shoulder and stopped as
well. He watched us, always
ready to run, but he never did.
And we sat taking him in, taking
in everything around him. He
would eventually move on, but
at no hurry and as he lingered,
we couldnt get enough of him.
These are the things I never did

of all of our noise and rambunctiousness.

and Martha McDanolds Frizzell
of Charlestown, NH.
Ed and Kay traveled extensively; Dominican Republic, Azores,

caribou hunting in the Yukon
Territory, Germany Africa,
Scotland, Hawaii, the Galapagos
Islands, and mountain climbing
in the rain forests of South
America. They drove cross
country in their mini van camping in it along the way. They
presented many slide shows of
their travels, as well as educational historical programs.
She was a Sunday school

teacher in Charlestown and
North Haverhill. For over fifty
years, she served as Choir
Director and violinist at North
Haverhill United Methodist
Church and continued singing
with the choir through this
spring. She dearly loved the
choir, her church family and her
church. She served as President
of Woodsville Progressive Club
and Haverhill Historical Society,
Northern NH District Director
of Womens Clubs, Master of
Pink Granite Grange and
Charlestown Grange, Trustee of
North Haverhill Library and
member of the North Country
Chorus.

I have been receiving calls from

customers who run Windows 7,
Windows 8 and 8.1 about the
Windows Logo on the bottom
right side of the system tray.
The logo says get windows 10,
I have been asked if it is legitimate, and yes it is. On or about
July 29, 2015 Microsoft will
make available a free upgrade
to windows 10 for all computers running Windows 7,
Windows 8 and 8.1. When you

click on the logo it asks you if
you want to reserve your copy
of Windows 10. You will have
1 year from the date of release
to install your free upgrade after
the one year you will have to
pay for the upgrade, price has
not been released as of this
writing. I recommend if you do
want to install the upgrade wait

until 6 months from the release

date say around December or
January to install the upgrade
by then most of the bugs should
be fixed in the operating system. Here is more information

The mighty Microsoft marketing system is taking an entirely

new approach to introducing
the next Windows. Here are the
facts, not the hype
By now, most Windows users

know that Microsoft has instituted a reservation system for
downloading Windows 10,
once it formally starts shipping
this July 29. Getting Windows
users to reserve a place at the
Win10 launch table is a novel
concept as was the Technical
Preview program that's been in
place for the past few months.
Although there are some good
aspects to the reservation system, it also has problems and is
simply unnecessary.
As you probably know by now,

Windows 10 will be a free
upgrade for all qualified
Windows systems i.e., mostly personal and "genuine" Win7
and Win8.1 machines for a
full year after its July 29
release. That's not exactly a
short window for deciding
whether you want the free
upgrade. (Reportedly, if you
miss that one-year window,
you'll have to pay for the OS.
And if you haven't updated
from Win8 to 8.1, a necessary
requirement for Win10, you're
way overdue to do so.)
Contrary to some rumors, there

will not be any sort of subscription fee after you upgrade.
Microsoft will send free
updates for the life of the OS.
Possibly the one useful aspect
of the Win10 reservation system is that it runs a check of
your system to see whether it's
ready for the new OS. The "Get

Windows 10" application that
suddenly appeared on many
Windows systems earlier this
month includes a "Check my
PC" option. As long as you've
kept up on patches in Windows
Update, updating to Win10
should be relatively uncomplicated for most current PCs.
There are numerous other, more
minor changes (detailed in the
Win10 Specifications page).
For example, during the
upgrade process, your anti-malware app will in theory be
uninstalled and later reinstalled
with the latest version. (It's
unknown what AV apps this
will work for.) The "Check my
PC" function will also test
whether third-party apps are
compatible with Win10.
Upgrading to Win10 will

remove a couple of Windows
features you might rely on. For
example,
as
noted
in
Win10
FAQ,
Microsoft's
Windows Media Center will
disappear. In its place, we'll get
a DVD-playback app so we can
continue watching DVD-based
movies on our notebooks. Also
gone are Windows 7 gadgets,
ostensibly replaced by the small
universal-app tiles in Win10's
new start menu. In truth, the oss
of gadgets is a non-issue; as
noted in an MS post, these
applets are not secure and
haven't been for some time.
Microsoft calls a "Current

branch" or a "Long-term servicing branch." For the consumer
versions of Win10, users will be
able to delay update installs
only by choosing when to
reboot their systems generally for a few days at most. There
will be no option to hide
updates, as we currently can in
all versions of Win7 and Win8.
Again, the specifics are still to
come. But as I understand it,
any delay installing updates
will apply only to nonsecurity
fixes that we now see as
"optional." Moreover, security
patches may be automatically
deployed at any time, not just
on Patch Tuesday.
As someone who has watched
the evolution of Windows
patching over the years, I can
well remember where we started patches appearing any
day of the week. (We also had
to know exactly which patch
needed to be installed before
another patch.) Patch Tuesday
was initiated to bring some predictability to updating, but the
Internet and cloud services are
effectively driving us back to
continuous patching at least
for security updates.
Though it's clear we need faster

and better updating, there's also
concern that Microsoft is still
sending out problematic patches. We can only hope that
Microsoft rises to the occasion
and fixes its patch-quality problems. Even at that, if the ability
to defer updates is limited,
enterprises will be slow to
deploy Windows 10.
Possibly the most important

challenge for many Windows
users will be the coming
changes to Windows Update.
The specifics are still somewhat
vague, but on the Win10 speci- I hope that clears some of the
