The richness and diversity of the natural resources of Minas Gerais inspire and stimulate the
creativity of its artisans. With differentiated raw materials, they make sculptures, jewelry,
clothing, decorative articles, domestic utilities and an extensive list of articles that provokes
the growing interest of the domestic and international markets.
The increase in demand requires constant updating of the trade processes and the
modernization of disclosure to facilitate the crafts business and stimulate the improvement
of the quality of living of the communities, expanding income generation and job positions.
Sebrae-MG has supported the segment since 1997 with actions to qualify the artisans and
orienting market access. An important and valuable instrument to conduct the work to the
consumer is the Minas Gerais Crafts Catalogue, the Typology Series. In its four volumes, the series
organizes the States crafts production by raw materials: minerals, fibers, textiles and wood.
The catalogues feature photos, product technical data, identification of the artisan and
the history of the article, encouraging direct contact between producer and buyer. It
also induces new actions for qualification and innovation to diversity and expand crafts
production from Minas.
Already consolidated as a permanent instrument of trade and promotion of crafts from
the State, its renewed publication contributes to winning other markets, serving the
growing preference for practical, creative products, artistic options to the massification and
standardization predominant in the world.
econmico do Estado.

Pioneirismo e vanguarda
da produo txtil mineira
There is nothing more inviting and seductive to see than the challenge of a well-made catalogue,
considering as mission and end the promotion of crafts from Minas Gerais. It is within this
proposition that SEBRAE has followed its path in an efficient, professional manner, creating four
new differentiated catalogues that hold a direct relation to the raw material by which the crafts are
produced: mineral wood fiber weaving.
In this way, we believe that there will be a communion a more adequate signaling, a facilitating
integration of the product with the contingent final consumer. Without a doubt, this is the mission
that gives us incentive, stimulates and recycles the crafts segment: it is not enough that the product
is created; it is necessary that the product find its market, under penalty of frustrating, even though
there may be an esthetic fruition of the artisans creative act, the financial result of the work
undertaken, the income that allows the popular artist to improve his quality of life. Promotion
is increasingly an instrument with multiple objectives, because, in addition to opening up and
winning new markets, it is also a fundamental piece in the appreciation of crafts making and in the
recording of the cultural identity that accompanies it.
We sincerely believe that this is the ideal that guides the partnership between SEBRAE and the
Government of Minas Gerais and which directs our path of not sparing efforts to show in these
catalogues all of the creativity of this segment that is always surprising us with its constant
innovation. A long time ago, crafts have stopped being just a utilitarian thing as motivation. Today,
they generate income and employment, and the segment has contributed significantly to the
economic development of the State.
These catalogues work as veritable passports that provide the arrival of the product on the
market through its identity (material used, weight, color, monthly production) to the far corners
of the earth, being able to be acquired today in a manner never before imagined through the
transparency of information.
The important thing is that we are together with the artisans in shows and business missions,
publications and are already thinking about sales portals, because this is our time, challenge
and mission. The appreciation of Man who, with his own hands, dreams and creativity is always
weaving, molding, building and, in this way, contributing and making himself present to think of a
more just, social, economic and ecologically correct world.
Pioneerism and
vanguard in textile
production in Minas
In colonial Brazil, by decree of the Portuguese
Crown, all non-mining activities were prohibited.
Consequently, the outlook for the development of
textile activity in Minas Gerais was not good.
Nevertheless, historical records, which relate the
resistance and struggle of the people of Minas in their
fight for independence, also mention some families
who manufactured their own fabrics.
In this period, the expression Cloth from Minas
appeared to designate a well made, handcrafted
product that went out to the four corners of the
country, crossing borders and reaching Spanish
America to assure the survival of the families from
Minas. Already at that time, Minas Gerais was
known for the quality of its work in embroidery
and of its seamstresses, as well as the progressive
generation of income in the activity.
In this manner, the history of fabric in Minas is
intertwined to the political and industrial culture of
Brazil. It was also at this time that the State created
the fame that it would be the birthplace of advanced
undertakings in the future. Before that, however,
Minas Gerais had become a hub of crafts abilities.

Over the entire territory of Minas, there was a dialogue
pertinent to crafts fabrication: In the South and
Zona da Mata with more amenable climates; in the
Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys and North of Minas,
with cattle ranch influence; in the extreme West of the
Paranaba Valley to the Triangulo Mineiro, with the
tradition of exploration or in the Central region and Rio
Doce, with mineral extraction and industrial park. The
refined manufacturing ability and recognition of its
own space recount cultural history inside Brazil.

At the same time, a powerful nucleus called the Minas Fashion Group was born, made up of
designers from Minas, a consolidation of a productive and creative organization that arose
to make history. Until today, this characteristic is interposed between the vanguard of design
and the insertion of creative potential of local crafts is intermixed, creating a strong, specific
image of its esthetic identity.
Minas Gerais presently has mills as modern as any country has developed, installed in
strategic areas that assure the fixation and supply of its local population, avoiding an exodus.
The floral arrangements made by skilled hands, the embroidery that warms the imagination,
the sacred rites and the future of needles and thread, thus complementing the base built in
weaving mills.
The fables of colors and movements cover us and leave us whole by the touch of the clothes,
banners, beds and tables, the clothes and dreamlike capes of our faith.
Thus, the geographic space of Minas distinguishes itself by a unique identity, constructed
stitch by stitch by the talent of its artisans, woven by scraps of memory, by solidarity and
affection, with a history full of identity and tradition.

Washroom set
Washroom set
The washroom set in two colors, made in cotton
and knit fabric, is one of the most popular pieces in
the atelier of artisan Alessandra Vanda Vieira from
Resende Costa, central region of Minas Gerais.
During the making of the pieces, Alessandra does
not worry about the standardized distribution
of the colors and details. For this reason, one
washroom set is never the same as the other. The
artisan learned her craft with her mother and
started to produce pieces in knit fabric and cotton.

Quilt
Carefully embroidered, the quilts produced by the Turmalina
Artisans Communitary Association attract attention by
their colors. On average, 20 artisans work with the fabric
on looms, making the quilts, table centerpieces, rugs, pillow
cases and other pieces.
The process of creation of the pieces begins when they
gather, discuss what to embroider or each one embroiders
according to their own creativity. Following the tradition of
the region, the artisans embroider the edge with cross stitch
in wool, hem and pico in string. This results in delicate, pretty
pieces. The work can be seen at the Association store Soarte
in Turmalina, northern Minas Gerais.
