very best to pass what they are putting on air as
real, and that they have even stooped low
enough to start prostituting children in
paranormal programming to get ratings.
Who would want a police officer
responding to a 9-1-1 call who actually believes
that there are ghosts - all based on night vision
videography and the word of psychics?

researchers" claim to be spirits, have been
proven beyond the shadow of a doubt to be
airborne particles of dust or moisture caught by

If the so called ghosts or spirits were
real, they would not have to be seen only at
night, they would also be visible during the day.
According to a few "ghoul busters" I have
spoken to over the years, the reason people
investigate ghosts at night is mostly, because the
vast majority of their fellow researchers and
those who go for ghost walks work or go to
school during the day.
In 2001, I rocked the paranormal
community when I made the connection
between ghosts / hauntings, demonic
possession, related so called paranormal activity
and black mold.

People living in homes with toxic black
mold are exposed to the mold mostly through
breathing in black mold spores and mycotoxins.
The mycotoxins of toxic black mold create
irritation and a burning sensation in the air
passages of a person such as in the nasal cavity,
mouth and throat. These mycotoxins which are
breathed in can become lodged in the mucous
membranes, sinuses and the lungs which then
causes a burning feeling, breathing problems
and bleeding in the lungs.
Symptoms:

Black mold mycotoxins or spores which
are breathed in, ingested, or absorbed through
the skin or eyes eventually find their way into a
person's blood stream and heart. This can lead
to heart damage and problems with blood
clotting and internal or external hemorrhaging.

Airborne toxic black mold mycotoxins
can enter into a person's body through the eyes.
The mycotoxins are cytotoxic and can damage
the cells they contact, inflaming and injuring
the eyes and creating vision problems.

- Blurry vision and vision worsening
- Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes)
Skin contact is one of the three main
routes of black mold mycotoxins exposure. In
cases where humans handled hay contaminated
with toxic black mold, they developed more
severe rashes and skin problems on the area of
contact and on sweaty areas such as the armpits.

Toxic black mold emits chemicals
which suppress the immune system, further

person immunocompromised from black mold
exposure will be more susceptible to infections
and sickness.

Mycotoxins from toxic black mold are
teratogenic meaning they can cause
abnormalities in the fetus during pregnancy
which lead to birth defects. Toxic black mold
mycotoxins are also cytoxotic and mutagenic,
inhibiting protein synthesis including DNA and
RNA.

During exposure to toxic black mold the
immune system may release a sedative called
Chloral Hydrate as a defense to try to slow the
effects of the mold down. This also makes the
person tired and causes fatigue. Toxic black
mold exposure can also cause soreness of the
muscles and joints.

- Drowsiness
- Weakness
- Aches and pains
- Muscle pain

Like other molds, toxic black mold and
its spores are allergenic and so they can cause
allergic reactions in humans such as breathing
problems, sore eyes, runny nose, itchiness,
sneezing and sore throat.
Some people may not experience severe
health problems from toxic black mold while
others will. Out of those people affected by the
mycotoxins from toxic black mold, people with
weaker immune systems, children and the
elderly will suffer worse health issues.

When so-called paranormal events are
looked at in the light of logic and reason, the
true cause of the believed phenomena will be
found and will be less sensationalistic than the
paranormal offers.
So, to members of the paranormal
collective, the proof for a rational and logical
explanation of the paranormal, based on
scientific and medical research to members of a
logical society, puts an end, without doubt, to
the paranormal activity of ghosts, hauntings,
demonic possession and other strange, weird,
bizarre believed to be caused by paranormal
entities.

According to a 1972 paper by two
psychiatrists associated with the Harvard
Medical School, flying saucers are almost
certainly misperceptions of sex organs. Lester
Grinspoon and Alan D. Persky wrote that most
UFO witnesses are persons suffering from
untreated psychological disorders. They have
reverted to "primal modes of thinking" and
lapsed back into childhood. This includes
dreams and hallucinations that are mistaken for
reality. In this state of ambulatory
schizophrenia, victims recall their "earliest
infantile perceptions."
They may see an approaching flying
saucer -- in fact an hallucination of a mother's
breast. Or conversely, they may see a cigar-
shaped object -- a phallic symbol if ever there
was one. "The flying objects," Grinspoon and
Persky pronounced, "are representations,
symbols, of highly libidinized primary objects
in the development of the individual. They are
symbols of extremes of gratification and of
omnipotence."

Beginning in mid-November 1896 and
lasting until May 1897, a remarkable social
delusion swept across parts of the United States,
as many citizens became convinced that an
American had perfected the world’s first
practical heavier-than-air flying machine. This
little-known episode in American history was
extraordinary in that, at the height of the
rumors, it is estimated that tens of thousands of
Americans reported that they had seen the craft
at various points across the nation (1). On
numerous occasions it was reportedly seen
thousands of miles apart, at the same time! The
maneuvers described by witnesses, were far
above any technology of the period-even by
today’s standards. It was typically described as
oval or cigar-shaped with an attached
undercarriage, having a powerful headlight, and
giant fans or wings protruding from both sides.
Some observers claimed the wings slowly
flopped up and down like a bird!
In this article, I will briefly 1) refute claims
by present-day UFO researchers who claim the
sightings were of extraterrestrials, 2) describe
the context of the episode, 3) offer an
explanation as to why the state of Oregon was
nearly immune from reports, and 4) discuss the
wave in terms of mainstream social
psychological theories.
ETs misperceived as airships
Many UFO researchers believe the most
likely explanation for the sightings is that they
were of an ET spaceship that had been mis-
identified by people culturally conditioned to
expect to see airships-even though a practical
heavier-than-air ship did not exist at the time.
While the extraterrestrial hypothesis may seem
plausible to many persons who have been
bombarded with images of ETs by the mass
media in recent years, the key to understanding
these sightings lies in a familiarity with the
social and historical climate in which they
occurred. When we examine the context of the
episode, apply basic theories of social
psychology, empathize with the people living at
that time, and add common sense, the sightings
can be readily explained without recourse to
exotic hypotheses such as aliens in UFOs. Is it
possible they were aliens? Of course. Is it
probable? No. Is it possible that the head of each
skeptics organization in America will win a
million dollars in lotteries during May, 1998?
Of course. Is it probable? No.
Context of the sightings
From about 1880 through the early twentieth
century, a massive popular literature appeared
on the theme of science and inventions.
Aeronautical developments were a prominent
feature of these accounts as “this literature fed
the public a steady diet of aeronautical
speculation and news to prime people for the
day when the riddle of aerial navigation finally
would receive a solution” (2). The general mood
of this literature was positive, trumpeting the
wonders of science and technology (3). In the
years immediately preceding the episode,
intense excitement was experienced worldwide
in anticipation of the first practical,
mechanically-powered heavier-than-air flight
(4).
The Pacific Northwest sightings
The California airship wave had been
building up for about a week and dominated the
California press amid sensational, near
saturation-level press coverage when the
sightings began to spread to nearby states, and
eventually across the country. One of the first
sightings in the Pacific Northwest was at
McMinnville, Oregon, on the night of
November 24th when, according to that city’s
Telephone-Register newspaper, several
residents claimed they saw an airship pass over
the city (5). Curiously, at this point, there was a
deluge of airship sightings across the Pacific
Northwest, except in Oregon. This prompted the
Portland Evening Telegram to remark that “It is
news to say that the ship has not been seen in
Portland” and had nearly missed the state
altogether (6).
The answer for the apparent immunity in
Oregon from what some people labeled as
“airshipitis,” appears to have resulted from a
combination of cloudy weather and responsible
journalism. As soon as the sightings began in
Oregon on November 24th, several state
newspapers editors quickly attributed the
sightings within the region to sensational
California journalism designed to sell
newspapers, and labeled the affair a hoax. These
included the Dallas Times Mountaineer which
used the headlines, “California’s Fake” (7), and
the Portland Oregonian which echoed these
sentiments (8), as did the Roseburg Plaindealer
who called them “Aladin’s Lamp stories” that
were akin to sea serpent tales (9). Meanwhile,
the Albany Weekly Herald-Desseminator
described the reports as “an entirely sensational
piece of fiction” (10).
The Marshfield Coos Bay News said
that “If it was a genuine flying machine, there
would be no need for it to meander around in
the heavens under cover of night” (11). The
Eugene Register said the flying machine stories
“remind one of the old saying that California
has the largest trees, smallest matches and the d-
nest liars of any place on earth” (12). Following
several reports of sightings near Alturas, the
Lake County Examiner noted: “Alturas has
several well-developed cases of ‘airship.’
Wonder what kind of whiskey they have down
in that section” (13). In early December, the
Portland Evening Telegram printed part of a
letter from an ex-Portland man who had moved
to California and who claimed to have met the
airship inventor there through a mutual friend
and was given several rides in the vessel. “The
airship in which I made my ascent is 23 feet
long, [has] 7 feet of beam, as we would term it
in nautical parlance, and [is] 7 1/2 feet high
from the ground. It is merely a rough model for
experimental purposes, devoid of all the elegant
and comfortable interior fittings later airships
planned after this model will contain” (14). At
the end of this story, the newspaper reported that
“none here will believe in the existence of that
marvelous airship until he or she sees it, and that
in full operation, too.”
Coverage in Nevada and Washington
By and large, the Nevada press was not
especially critical of the reports and sightings
flourished. Near Reno, one resident claimed that
an airship with a searchlight passed by and
voices could be heard coming from the craft,
including “We are four degrees too far north,
change the course” (15). This account was
simply reported by the paper without any
criticism. As for the nature of the California
sightings where the wave began, the Carson
City Morning Appeal stated “There are
thousands of people in California who believe
that a flying machine has been invented that
sailed from Oroville to Sacramento and from
there to Oakland one night last week. It was
seen first in Sacramento and the inventor
promises to exhibit it over San Francisco in a
few days” (16). There was no discussion of the
airship having been a hoax fueled by
misperceptions, lying, and press sensationalism.
In Washington, while there was some press
criticism of the airship claims (17), many press
accounts were also uncritical. Consider the
following report of a sighting at Marble:
Marble, Wash., May 5.--The town of
Marble was greatly excited today over the
appearance of an airship. Some men working at
the mill discovered it as it appeared over the
mountains at the southern part of town, and
watched it disappear in a northeasterly
direction. It was in full view, and the fans could
easily be recognized ... (18)
Other newspapers reporting this story in
a matter-of-fact manner included the Ellensburg
Localizer (19), and the Chelan Leader (20),
while a separate sighting over Spokane on
Thursday night, April 15th, was reported
uncritically by the Walla Walla Union (21) and
the Spokesman-Review (22).
Explaining the airship mania
It is important to keep in mind that when
you boil everything down, the only significant
evidence we are left with is eyewitness
testimony-and the human mind and eyes do not
work together to collect information like a video
camera. Humans interpret as we perceive the
world. The accuracy of eyewitness testimony is
remarkably subject to error and preconditioned
by mental outlook or frame of reference (23). A
good example of this process that most of us are
familiar with involves close decisions made by
referees and umpires at sporting events.
Through the use of instant replay, we can
usually see where we were wrong, or on
occasion, where a trained observer-the referee-
was wrong.
The airship observations appear to have
been a symbolic projection of the prevailing
technological mania and seemingly limitless
faith in science and inventions that was
sweeping America.

A note of optimism
It is certainly discouraging for skeptics who
address the UFO question to see that over the
past fifty years, numerous sighting waves have
occurred in the US and around the world
involving UFOs, with a great deal of press
speculation that they are or may be alien
spaceships. In 1998, UFOs sighting reported in
the mass media remain as common as ever,
despite a total absence of confirming physical
evidence that they represent extraterrestrial

pseudo-documentaries in recent years. This has
happened despite the appearance of several
excellent books examining the subject,
including Robert Sheaffer’s The UFO Verdict
(1981), UFOs Explained by Philip Klass (1974),
and Donald Menzel and Ernest Taves The UFO
Enigma (1977). Optimistically, what happened
in Oregon during 1896-97 is encouraging as it
suggests that with responsible reporting, mass
delusions can be extinguished before they get
out of hand. By “responsible” I mean reporting
not only what is claimed, but interviewing
experts such as astronomers, psychologists and
other specialists who may offer alternative
explanations that provide a balanced viewpoint

A detailed discussion of the Oregon
airship sightings does not appear in the book
(although some reports do). Bartholomew has
written these reports into this modest article for
the Oregon Skeptics to make them aware of this
fascinating, all but forgotten chapter in Pacific
Northwestern history, and let them know of the
publication of his book.

abjure the forces of evil in the name of
Professor Xavier.

The Lowdown

I think I would be fascinated by a

documentary about children who believe they
have supernatural abilities and their
relationships with their parents. That's not what
Psychic Kids delivers, despite its claims.
Instead, the viewer gets a series of informative
demonstrations of confirmation bias, tarted up
with fancy editing and dramatic pauses. Now
that's entertainment!
No, no it's not. I'm not just saying that
because I'm a skeptic, either. My beef comes
mainly from how terribly repetitive the whole
exercise is. Every episode follows exactly the
same formula.
Step a) Introduce three children who
claim to have good reason for wetting the bed.
Step b) Bring those children to a
common location.
Step c) Invoke the powers of Mysticism
and Science (thanks to Coffey and Dr. Miller,
respectively) to confirm those kids' worst fears.
Step d) Play a game of Captain Planet.
"With our powers combined, we can tell the
spirit of Blackbeard to cut it out, all right!"
There's so little variation that the
children, the subjects of this whole
"documentary" affair, become indistinct, which
isn't helped by the fact that the show isn't
concerned with the particulars of a given kid's
life beyond that he or she claims to be bothered
by some psychic affinity.
That makes me upset, as an audience
member, because it gives the show such a
narrow focus of appeal. Skeptics get the cold
shoulder, and psychological history doesn't
even skirt near the camera's lens. Anyone trying
to be interested in the children as complex
creatures with some sort of unclarified problem

isn't so much a documentary as a piece of reality
TV, with all the camera-awareness on the part of
the subjects that goes along with the genre. Dr.
Miller and Coffey lead the children plenty while
the cameras are rolling, but just as in the
"unscripted" world of reality TV, it's hard not to
suspect that there's even more direction going
on behind-the-scenes.
In this case, I'd feel confident saying that
rather than exploring the lives of these children,
the producers are exploiting them. I don't mean
that in a pejorative sense, but just descriptively.
By focusing on the psychic abilities, rather than
the children possessing them, the whole series
feels uncomfortably like watching an isolated
group of some religion discussing how great
that religion is. There's no reason for me to care,
unless I happen to be interested in that religion.
What's more, there's nothing to be gained from
encouraging each other in the tenets of that
religion unless you're physically there in the
circle.
It's not worth watching for most
viewers, unless — like me — you enjoy
sticking your nose where it doesn't belong.
Here's what gets my goat: There's never any
sign that the children are in danger, but we are
meant to believe that they believe they are. If a
child is in danger, it's common to react by
wanting to protect them or fix their problem.
And, judging by the claims of the show, that's
exactly what Coffey and Dr. Miller achieve.
Their exercises place control in the hands of
these young girls and boys. Instead of being
haunted, the children are taught to stand and
face their demons, however literal they may be.
I never want to argue that it's bad to give
someone hope and the sense that they control
their own lives. I can't argue that, without
knowing more about the lives in question.
Which brings me back to my original
frustration. Psychic Kids doesn't have much
meat on its bones, and what little there is
occupies a realm man was not meant to know,
or something. There's a certain sympathy that
can evolve between the audience and the
subjects, but it's because of the situation they
occupy within the confines of the show. No hint
of real information troubles the waters of this
series, and so it's hard to spot even a glimpse of
interest.
The Package
If you would rather not watch all six
episodes— Wait, let me rephrase. You would
rather not watch all six episodes. Instead, you
can watch the condensed, feature-length version
of the whole show. You get all the same
questionable methods and dangerous
reinforcement of superstitions, but in less than
half the amount of time. It's a steal!

They come in peace.
Those lights you've seen swooping and
swerving across the Modesto night sky are not
extraterrestrial. They do not want to be taken to
your leader. They're not even unidentified
anymore.
Instead, the culprits are a bunch of
model plane enthusiasts who have attached
lights to their radio- controlled aircraft and fly
them through the night sky for fun.
"This was never intended to be seen as a
UFO," said Robert Merrill, the de facto captain
of the Nor Cal Nite Fliers. "We figured we'd try
something, fly at night. Next thing you know
people are calling the cops, TV and thinking
they're UFOs. We never really thought it'd be
this kind of a spectacle."
The 39-year-old Modesto resident and a
group of about eight other men often meet at
Modesto Hobby & Crafts, off McHenry and
Bangs avenues in north Modesto, for their night
flights.
They've flown all over Modesto and
across the area, including Ripon and Tracy.
The crafts have about a 6-foot wingspan
and weigh about 2 pounds. Each flier has
customized his lights design.
Merrill, who had been flying model
planes for about eight years, came up with the
idea in August when he found the lights online
from a manufacturer in Hong Kong.
The 1-meter adhesive LED strip is about
a quarter-inch wide and comes in red, white,
blue, green and amber.
Because they run on batteries and turn
off to glide at altitude, the crafts are nearly
soundless. In flight, the planes resemble a
graceful, digital albatross.
So why fly a $250 model plane at night
when it's, well, dark?
"I think (it's) just the calmness of it. The
whole thing is, when you get off work, you
bring your plane out to the park and literally
kick back in a chair and fly them," Merrill said.
"Nighttime, you can fly it farther because the
lights are so bright you can see it farther than in
the daytime."
Some members admit the E.T. factor
adds to the excitement.
"Honestly, the most fun is messing with
people," said Modesto resident Rick Sanchez,
40. "People will see the lights (from their cars)
and their heads will hang out the windows. It's
amazing how many people think they are

The group flies almost every night that
the sky is clear. Manteca resident John Gilmore,
46, started about eight months ago.
"The challenge of it interested me. And
it's definitely a challenge," he said. "We're
having fun. We're not trying to freak anyone out
or cause problems. It's just good, clean fun."
The Modesto Police Department is well
aware of the group. Lt. Clint Raymer said he
first saw the lights driving to his north Modesto
home. He has since talked with the men and
discussed the pertinent municipal city codes.
"They're not supposed to fly them in the
city limits," he said. "But the industrial area (off
Bangs) is fine. I see the cars pulled over and
people gazing at those things in the sky. They
catch people's attention; they're neat to see."
He said the planes haven't set off
anything close to a "War of the Worlds"-level
hysteria. While the department has fielded a few
UFO calls, Raymer said "it's not a burden."
"Whenever I see people looking, I pull
over and tell them it's remote-control planes,"
he said. "It kind of takes the fun out of (it) then."
Modesto Airport has fielded a handful of
calls about the lights in the sky. Airport manager
Jerome Thiele said the Federal Aviation
Administration has an advisory circular with
guidelines for model aircraft standards.
The circular encourages "voluntary
compliance" and includes cautions about
operating near airports, hospitals and schools. It
recommends flying no higher than 400 feet.
"I just want to make sure that they don't
intentionally fly close to the airport and keep
clear of the medical helipads close to the
hospital and other populated areas," Thiele said.
No specific complaints about the model
crafts have been filed with the FAA's Flight
Standards District Office in Fresno. FAA
Inspector Jim Henry said the advisory circular is
meant to encourage hobbyists to be careful in
the airspace.
"We can do the enforcement if it's an
egregious danger to the public," he said.
Merrill said he was familiar with the
FAA advisory and that the group never tries to
interfere with active aircraft.
"If we see a plane fly by, we'll move
away," he said. "We try to stay out of people's
way."
The group caused a minor commotion
over Super Bowl Sunday when members flew
their planes near Briggsmore Avenue. Modesto
Hobby & Crafts owner Joe Keevil said drivers
stopped along the busy thoroughfare to
rubberneck at the night sky. Police later came
and asked them to stop.
"We try to stay away from busy roads
now," said Keevil, who doesn't participate in
flying planes but knows all the men from his
store, where they all met.
Even from their north Modesto flight
area, the planes and their lights can be seen all
around town. Merrill said he can fly as high as
1,000 feet with his craft. He has heard reports of
sightings as far away as Maze Boulevard near
Highway 99 and in Riverbank.
"Every single night (we fly) somebody comes
out and wonders what they are, if they're a
UFO," Merrill said. "We sort of laugh about it."

problem, then the discovery of a "devil curse"
on the victim, and then the convincing of the
victim that the removal of the curse can only
take place if the victim's money is "cleansed,
dumped in the ocean (or large body of water),
buried or set on fire (destroyed).
The victim is convinced to remove large
sums of money from their bank and bring the
money to the "reader", who either cleanses it or
takes it for destruction. After the reader obtains
a large sum of money from the victim, the
money is in fact not destroyed and never
returned to the victim. It is an elaborate scam
used many times throughout the United States
and Canada.
Debra Marks, doing business as Sister
Gabrielle or Madam Savanna, was arrested on
April 08, 1999 and again on May 12, 1999.
Her associate, Laura Urich, also known
as Sister Pocahontas, was also arrested on June
17, 1999 along with Debra Marks. Urich is
believed to be the grandmother of Debra Marks.
Both females were conducting business out of
the same location.
Both were charged with felony fraud
type crimes.

This internationally famous UFO
incident took place in 1986, on January 29, at
7:55 p.m. Some have called it the Roswell
Incident of the Soviet Union. The information
concerning this incident was sent to us by a
number of Russian ufologists.
Dalnegorsk is a small mining town in
the Far East of Russia. That cold January day a
reddish sphere flew into this town from the
southeastern direction, crossed part of
Dalnegorsk, and crashed at the Izvestkovaya
Mountain (also known as Height or Hill 611,
because of its size). The object flew noiselessly,
and parallel to the ground; it was approximately
three meters in diameter, of a near-perfect round
shape, with no projections or cavities, its colour
similar to that of burning stainless steel. One
eyewitness, V. Kandakov, said that the speed of
the UFO was close to 15 meters per hour. The
object slowly ascended and descended, and its
glow would heat up every time it rose up. On its
approach to Hill 611 the object "jerked", and
fell down like a rock.
All witnesses reported that the object
“jerked” or “jumped”. Most of them recall two
“jumps”. Two girls remember that the object
actually “jumped” four times. The witnesses
heard a weak, muted thump. It burned
intensively at the cliff's edge for an hour. A
geological expedition to the site, led by V.
Skavinsky of the Institute of Geology and
Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Soviet
Academy of Sciences (1988), had confirmed the
object's movements through a series of
chemical and physical tests of the rocks
collected from the site. Valeri Dvuzhilni, head
of the Far Eastern Committee for Anomalous
Phenomena, was the first to investigate the
crash. With the help of our colleagues in Russia
this is the most accurate account of the incident
to date.
Dr. Dvuzhilni arrived at the site two
days after the crash. Deep snow was covered the
area at the time. The site of the crash, located on
a rocky ledge, was devoid of snow. All around
the site remnants of silica splintered rocks were
found: (due to exposure to high temperatures),
and "smoky" looking. Many pieces, and a
nearby rock, contained particles of silvery
metal, some "sprayed"-like, some in the form of
solidified balls. At the edge of the site a tree-
stump was found. It was burnt and emitted a
chemical smell. The objects collected at the site
were later dubbed as "tiny nets", "little balls",
"lead balls", "and glass pieces" (that is what
each resembled).
Closer examination revealed very
unusual properties. One of the "tiny nets"
contained torn and very thin (17 micrometers)
threads. Each of the threads consisted of even
thinner fibers, tied up in plaits. Intertwined with
the fibers were very thin gold wires. Soviet
scientists, at such facilities as the Omsk branch
of the Academy of Sciences, analyzed all
collected pieces. Without going into specific
details suffice it to say that the technology to
produce such materials was not yet available on
Earth...except for one disturbing account.
To give an idea of the complexity of the
composition of the pieces, let us look at the
"iron balls". Each of them had its own chemical
composition: iron, and a large mixture of
aluminum, manganese, nickel, chromium,
tungsten, and cobalt.
Such differences indicate that the object
was not just a piece of lead and iron, but some
heterogeneous construction made from
heterogeneous alloys with definite significance.
When melted in a vacuum, some pieces would
spread over a base, while at another base they
would form into balls. Half of the balls were
covered with convex glass-like structures.
Neither the physicists nor physical metallurgists
can say what these structures are, what their
composition is. The "tiny nets" (or "mesh")
have confused many researchers. It is
impossible to understand their structure and
nature of the formation.
A. Kulikov, an expert on carbon at the
Chemistry Institute of the Far Eastern
Department of the Academy of Sciences, USSR,
wrote that it was not possible to get an idea what
the "mesh" is. It resembles glass carbon, but
conditions leading to such formation are
unknown. Definitely a common fire could not
produce such glass carbon. The most
mysterious aspect of the collected items was the
disappearance, after vacuum melting, of gold,
silver, and nickel, and the appearance-from
nowhere-of molybdenum, that was not in the
chamber to begin with.
The only thing that could be more or less
easily explained was the ash found on site.
Something biological was burned during the
crash. A flock of birds, perhaps, or a stray dog;
or someone who was inside the crashed object?
Dr. Dvuzhilni’s article was published in
a Soviet (Uzbekistan) Magazine NLO: Chto,
Gde, Kogda? (Issue 1, 1990, reprint of an article
in FENOMEN Magazine, March 23, 1990). In
his article Dalnegorski Phenomen V. Dvuzhilni
provides details unavailable elsewhere.
The southwesterly trajectory of the
object just about coincides with the Xichang
Cosmodrome of People’s Republic of China,
where satellites are launched into geo
synchronous orbit with the help of the Great
March-2 carrier rockets. There is no data of any
rocket launches in the PRC at the end of
January. At the same time, Sinxua Agency
reported on January 25, 1988, that there was a
sighting of a glowing red sphere not far from the
Cosmodrome, where it hovered for 30 minutes.
Possibly, UFOs had shown interest toward the
Chinese Cosmodrome in the years 1989 and

1988.
There is another curious detail: at the
site of the Height 611 small pieces of light gray
color were discovered, but only in the area of
the contact. These specimens did not match any
of the local varieties of soil. What is amazing,
the spectroscopic analysis of the specimens
matched them to the Yaroslavl tuffs of the
polymetalic deposits (i.e. the specimens
possessed some characteristic elements of the
Yaroslavl, but not the Dalnegorsk, tuffs). There
is a possibility that the object obtain pieces of
tuff in the Yaroslavl area. Tuffs experience
metamorphosis under the effect of high
temperatures .
The site of the crash itself was
something like an anomalous zone. It was
"active" for three years after the crash. Insects
avoid the place. The zone affects mechanical
and electronic equipment. Some people,
including a local chemist, actually got very sick.
This Hill 611 is located in the area of
numerous anomalies; according to an article in
the Soviet digest Tainy XX Veka (Moscow,
1990, CP Vsya Moskva Publishing House).
Even photos taken at the site, when developed,
failed to show the hill, but did clearly show
other locations. Members of an expedition to
the site reported later that their flashlights
stopped working at the same time. They
checked the flashlights upon returning home,
and discovered burned wires.
Eight days after the UFO crash at Hill
611, on February 8, 1986, at 8:30 p.m., two
more yellowish spheres flew from the north, in
the southward direction. Reaching the site of the
crash, they circled it four times, then turned
back to the north and flew away. Then on
November 28, 1987 (Saturday night, 11:24
p.m.), 32 flying objects had appeared from
nowhere. There were hundreds of witnesses,
including the military and civilians.
The objects flew over 12 different
settlements, and 13 of them flew to Dalnegorsk
and the site. Three of the UFOs hovered over
the settlement, and five of them illuminated the
nearby mountain. The objects moved
noiselessly, at an altitude between 150 to 800
meters. None of the eyewitnesses actually
thoughts they were UFOs. Those who observed
the objects assumed they were aircraft involved
in some disaster, or falling meteorites. As the
objects flew over houses, they created
interference (television, telegraph functions).
The Ministry of Internal Affairs officers,
who were present, testified later that they
observed the objects from a street, at 23:30
(precise time). They saw a fiery object, flying in
from the direction of Gorely settlement. In front
of the fiery “flame” was a lusterless sphere, and
in the middle of the object was a red sphere.
Another group of eyewitnesses included
workers from the Bor quarry. They observed an
object at 11:00 pm. A giant cylindrical object
was flying straight at the quarry. Its size was
like that of a five-story building, its length
around 200 or 300 hundred meters. The front
part of the object was lit up, like a burning
metal. The workers were afraid that the object
would crash on them. One of the managers of
the quarry observed an object at 11:30 pm.

There are opposing opinions. V.
Psalomschikov, an expert on aircraft crashes,
and a well-known journalist, stated that the
object was manufactured in the USSR, the
technology to produce it dates back to 1970's,
and that he has similar ultra thin filaments in
his possession. However, a Soviet probe
would self-destruct immediately, whereas the
object reportedly did try to ascend several
times. Actually, Psalomschikov believes the
crashed object was a Soviet-built intelligence
remotely piloted vehicle.
A Russian ufologist and scientist,
Gennady Belimov, presented information in
1993 that a Soviet military probe had crashed
at the Hill 611. His proof was based on
similar crashed of highly classified Soviet
probes, and he concludes that ufologists
misinterpreted the probe which to be a UFO
crashed in the Far East. As for the lead
collected at the site, Belimov believes it was
extracted from the Kholodnensky deposit in
the Northern Baikal region.
A new generation of Russian UFO
researchers have reached a conclusion that
the probe was an aerostatics reconnaissance
vehicle possibly equipped to make infrared
photographs. The speed of the probe was
estimated to be approximately 54 kilometers
per hour, which would negate Dr. Dvuzhilni’s
data. But even among them there is no
consistent belief as to the origin of the probe.
Vladimir Smoly, for example, does not
believe there was a thermite self-destruction
device aboard the probe. The self-destruction
would be expected to be immediate, unlike to
what had happened at Height 611 to the
crashed object.
Was this a NATO probe? V.
Psalomschikov mentioned that previously the
NATO reconnaissance balloons did contain
trotyl (TNT) self-destruction devices. One
such apparatus fell on a house in the USSR
and “self-destroyed” it; fortunately, there was
no one inside the dwelling at the time. The
Soviets raised hell, the scandal was heard
even in the UN, and since that time the NATO
probes contained only thermite self-
destruction devices. Smoly believes the
object was aerostatics apparatus created for
entertainment purposes. However, M.
Gershtein indicated that the object had a
clearly defined trail, and could not have been
a balloon moving at the speed of the wind
carrying it.
Would the military later stage fake
"UFO" flights to confuse and mislead
ufologists, and the Western intelligence
services? The objects observed on November
28, 1987 consisted of different shapes: cigar-
like, cylindrical, and spherical. Their flight
was noiseless, smooth, at various altitudes.
Actually, not one of the eyewitnesses
(including the police) mistook them for
UFOs. The impression was that they
observed some aircraft, or falling meteorites.
While in flight, the objects affected power
lines throughout the area.
Lieutenant Zhivayev of the Interior
Ministry troops described the object he
observed as a flame with a lusterless sphere in
the front and a reddish ball in the rear. And the
workers from the Bor Quarry-Bistryancev,
Anokhin, Grigoriyev-reported a giant
cylindrical object at an altitude of 300 meters.
Its fore part was illuminated-like melting metal.
There are many other witness accounts in the
Dvuzhilni report. To remind our readers, the
area of the crash is not that far away from the
Tunguska Phenomenon site.
Something else, heretofore unknown in
the West, took place in the region, that could
shed some light on both incidents.
Alexander Rempel published his report
in Priroda newspaper (Vladivostok) in July of
1991. A fiery object was observed over the
Khabarovsk city on August 24, 1978, at night. It
was about a meter and a half in diameter. At one
point in its flight, it emitted a hissing (or
wheezing) sound, like a jet engine does. The
area around it became illuminated, like daylight.
The object descended slowly, and lit up brightly.
The soil, albeit full of water, burned up. Coal-
like pieces were found in the area, they had
holes and glass-like structures. For ten years
thereafter the soil remained unchanged, and
nothing grew at the site of the explosion.
The eyewitnesses reported that a dark
object flew away just before the explosion. It
was not found. Ten years later Rempel and his
colleagues received numerous reports about an
anomalous zone near Khabarovsk. Few
explorers who have returned from the area
confirmed that the object fell there, and that
fantastic things have been observed there. Yet at
the time Rempel could not confirm their reports:
the military had sealed the area off. But his
group was able to research the area of the
Dalnegorsk Object alleged fall after it flew off
the Hill 611. They found out about unusual
animal mutations.
Russian newspaper Komsomol'skaya
Pravda in its December 1, 2000 issue published
an article about the Dalnegorsk case (NLO svili
v Primorje gnezdo). Most interesting was
Andrey Pavlov’s (the author of the newspaper
article) reference to the fact that in the early
1990s Russian generals from the anti-aircraft
forces became concerned about the UFO
activity in the area, and contacted local UFO
researchers. An exchange of information
ensued. It is newsworthy when a major Russian
newspaper mentions such fact (the author
actually quoted Dr. Dvuzhilni, the chief
investigator of the Height 611 UFO crash).
According to Alexander Rempel (NLO
Magazine, 1999) very few Russian ufologists
recall the crash, or pay attention to it.
Alexander Rempel informed
participants of the UFOMIND Russian UFO
Forum that fragments of the crashed object have
been examined in Vladivostok, Khabarovsk,
and Munich, Liege and other places. In 2000,
four Japanese and Korean expeditions examined
the Height 611.
Ufologists from Korea and Japan have
made offers to purchase the “balls”. The current
price for one gram of any fragment is $500.00,
and the price has been going up. There are
offers of $1,500 per gram, but the demand
exceeds the supply. Rempel is aware that there
have been numerous conclusions of a number of
institutes and laboratories in Russia and abroad,
and yet all of them differ from each other. There
is no final conclusion that the object was made
on Earth, but at the same time, there is no
definite conclusion that the object was of
extraterrestrial origin. Some peculiarities of the
object still cannot be explained. Since 2000
there has not been anything anomalous in the
area. But Russians ufologists show little or no
interest in the famous case, states Rempel,
except for those in Vladivostok. Two exhibits of
the Height 611 incident have been made and are
active; one is in the Dalnegorsk museum, and
the other in the UFO Museum in Vladivostok.

There are hundreds of witnesses, and
dozens of the actual eyewitnesses, and many
drawings of the incident, but there are no
photographs. Numerous “kontaktyori” (those
who claim to be in contact with extraterrestrial
civilizations) had made predictions that never
came true, claimed to be in contact with alien
civilizations, wrote books and made paintings
of the event. They even claimed that a UFO
would land at the Dalnegorsk stadium. This
prediction had attracted attention of a great
number of Russians, thousands of them arrived
in Dalnegorsk, but nothing happened. Some of
those who had arrived to meet the aliens still
remain in the Dalnegorsk mental asylum.
The RUFORS Round Table members
(Anatoly Kutovoy and others), as well as
Vladimir Smoly’s UFO Forum participants,
have discussed the case, and actively exchanged
scientific information about it. As for the
Russian media, it has paid some attention to the
crash recently, too.
We must mention another interpretation
of the Dalnegorsk crash. It was published in
Soviet newspaper Ribak Primorya (Issue 14,
1991). The author of the article about the
Dalnegorsk Object was Y. Vasilyev. He states
several interesting points. According to him, V.
Dvuzhilni and a group of his students arrived to
the site of the crash. They searched the area
three times, quite thoroughly, and found tiny
metallic drops. All required measurements were
taken, and took photographs.
Then they initiated physical and
chemical analyses of the findings. The
temperature of the melting was 390 degrees.
Silvery metal was very soft; it was easy to break
it with a pair of tweezers. On February 8, 1986,
V. Dvuzhilni and V. Berliozov, a geologist (who
had studied the Sikhote-Alin’ meteorite) again
ascended the hill. The geologist confirmed that
the crashed body was of a cosmic origin, and the
traces affirmed this. Its luminescence was
similar to that of usual meteorites. Five years
later, V. Dvuzhilini came up with further details
(“fantastic details”, according to Y. Vasilyev).
Then the author comes up with his own
hypothesis. On January 28, 1986, American
shuttle Challenger exploded in the sky. The
force of the explosion was such that the
fragments were thrown all over the Atlantic. It is
possible that one of the fragments, flying from
the southwest, landed in Dalnegorsk the next
day.
There seems to a consensus of opinion
that the Hill 611 crash may well a conventional
explanation, but exactly what remains to be
seen. It does have its parallel’s in the West, the
Roswell case being one of them, but there are
others. Irrespective of this, it is a fascinating
case, which is sure to divulge more information
and more theories in the years to come.

A classic UFO sighting by civilian pilots
has been explained following a “cold case”
investigation more than 50 years since it made
headlines across the world. One evening in June
1954, Captain James Howard was flying a
BOAC Stratocruiser from New York to London
when he and his flight crew spotted a shape-
changing, black “jellyfish-shaped” object
hovering low on the horizon above the Labrador
coast. As crew and passengers watched in
amazement, they saw a number of other dark
blob-like objects arranged on either side of the
“mothership”. As a fighter aircraft reached the
scene, these smaller UFOs appeared to enter the
larger object, which shrank and disappeared. On
landing in London, Capt. Howard was
interviewed live on BBC TV and became
convinced the UFOs were being “intelligently
handled”. Even the infamous Colorado UFO
project failed to crack the case and suggested it
was a rare natural phenomenon – “so rare that it
apparently has never been reported before or
since”.
But Scottish UFO investigator Martin
Shough has unearthed primary evidence,
including the crews’ statements and weather
data, to solve the mystery. Through a process of
elimination, Shough concludes there can be
little doubt the crew and passengers saw an
unusual mirage. And far from being rare, he
discovered this sighting was just one of “an
unrecognised class of very similar mirage
observations from aircraft”. His definitive study
proves it is possible to resolve even the most
perplexing UFO reports with enough time and
effort. It also shows there is valuable scientific
data lurking within the noise that constitutes the
UFO enigma.
BIZARRE NEWS
Man yells at parrot, jailed for
weekend
EDINBURGH, Scotland - A 19-year-old
Scottish man who admitted to threatening his
grandmother's parrot for interrupting his sleep
was ordered to apologize with chocolates.
Stefan McKinsley, 19, pleaded guilty Monday
to a breach of the peace after his grandmother
called police Friday at 2:45 a.m. and said the
teenager was intoxicated and hitting the parrot's
cage, Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported
Monday. Prosecutors said McKinsley, who
threatened the bird with violence if it did not
quiet down and allow him to sleep in the spare
room, did not calm down after his grandmother
placed a cloth over the parrot's cage.
McKinsley, who spent the weekend in jail, was
sentenced by Edinburgh Sheriff Court to buy his
grandmother a box of chocolates as an apology.
Utah man creates 18-tower ice
castle
MIDWAY, Utah - A Utah ice sculptor said his
massive out- door ice castle has grown to
include 18 towers, each of which measures 30 to
35 feet high. Brent Christiansen said he uses 20
sprinkler heads to expand the structure by 10-12
tons of ice each day on the golf course of the
Zermatt Resort and Spa in Midway, Utah, and
he plans to continue expanding the project
through the end of February, The Salt Lake
Tribune reported. Christiansen said the resort
allows him to keep the $2 entrance fee visitors
must pay to enter the castle and he and his wife
were given a room at the hotel for the season.
The self-taught sculptor said the main tower of
the structure is expected to reach three to four
stories high by the time of its completion.
Large buck invades kitchen
BELLEVILLE, Ill. - An Illinois man who was
awakened in the night by a ruckus in his home
said he walked into his kitchen and was shocked
to find a 10-to-12-point buck.
Mark Page of Belleville said he and his
wife, Cassia, woke up early Saturday morning
to the sound of glass breaking in their kitchen
and he walked down the steps to find his dining
room window shattered and the large deer
standing in his kitchen, KSDK-TV, St. Louis,
reported. "He was standing right here, with his
head in the sink," Page said.
"I looked at him for seriously not even a
fraction of a second," he said, "and I ran back
upstairs because I don't mess with deers." Page
said the deer found its own way out by crashing
through another window, leaving a trail of blood
through the house as his signature. The
homeowner, who said there are no wooded
areas near his home, said police told him they
used dogs to try to track the buck, but they never
found the animal.

Skeptic on Skeptic
Fellow investigators talk UFOs
in Aztec, N.M.

New Mexico, land of two national
laboratories, is home to lots of scientists.
Whether employed developing supercomputers,
testing explosives or doing autopsies on
extraterrestrial crash victims, there are plenty of
PhDs walking around.
But New Mexico native David Thomas
is not your ordinary egghead. He’s also one of
the country’s top skeptical investigators.
Thomas has degrees in physics and mathematics
from New Mexico Tech, where he develops
earthquake-detection equipment. He also
teaches a course on critical thinking and
distinguishing science from pseudoscience. Oh,
and he plays mean bass in local act Vigilante
Band.
He’s president of New Mexicans for
Science and Reason (NMSR), which tackles all
manner of curious claims, from the world-
famous Roswell crash to creationism to
contrails (or chemtrails, those white lines in the
sky following airplanes, claimed by conspiracy
theorists to be toxic). “We also look into fringe
science and paranormal claims,” he says. In
fact, Thomas and his group have offered to test
people with alleged powers right here in
Albuquerque, including psychics and dowsers.
Unfortunately, Thomas says, “at the last minute
they chicken out, and they really don’t want to
have a scientific test of their paranormal powers
for one reason or another.”
Thomas is perhaps best known for
applying his knowledge of mathematics and
computers to the Bible Code, the hidden
messages supposedly found in holy texts. The
code was the subject of the 1997 best-selling
book The Bible Code, by Michael Drosnin.
Thomas demonstrated that the patterns Drosnin
and others were finding were artifacts that
resulted from “data mining.” That is, if you run
a computer program through enough massive
pieces of text (whether the Bible or War and
Peace or Moby Dick), looking for enough
patterns (every 10th letter, every 12th letter,
etc.), it will eventually spit out some words and
jumbly sentences that could be interpreted to
make sense. It’s the sort of thing that the
veritable room full of monkeys with typewriters
would be able to generate, given enough time

lesser-known cities that also claim to have

Scully—published a book called Behind the
Flying Saucers. It was the first full-length
American book on flying saucers. It described

that the disc landed near Aztec, N.M., back in
March of 1948.” The disc that was allegedly
recovered was said to have been 99.99 feet in
diameter.
Scully’s best seller stated that the dead

top-secret U.S. government hangar somewhere.
But two scientists (Scully’s informants Silas M.
Newton and Leo GeBauer) had managed to get
ahold of alien technology that could locate oil
and gold!
“Turns out that these two gentlemen
were oil swindlers,” Thomas explains. “They
were con men. GeBauer worked as a tech at an
auto parts supply place. He was not a top-secret
government scientist. Newton, also a con artist,
would tell investors of the recent crash of an
alien ship, the analysis by top-secret
government labs, and the discovery of magnetic
devices that could find oil and gold. Then came
the pitch. Newton told the investors that he
could get them access to this incredible ‘alien’
technology—for a price.”
The scam was exposed when J. P. Cahn,
a reporter for True magazine, secretly obtained
a sample from the alien spacecraft and had it
tested. They found it was “the same aluminum
that we use in pots and pans,” Thomas says.
Cahn wrote an exposé, and it was the beginning
of the end for the Aztec UFO story. The men
were put on trial, and the Oct. 14, 1952 front-
page headline of the Denver Post read “ ‘Saucer
Scientist’ in $50,000 Fraud.”
Despite the 1952 public exposure of the
Aztec UFO hoax, other writers have since
jumped on the Aztec UFO bandwagon, insisting
that the whole thing was (of course) a
government coverup. The fact that Roswell had
been capitalizing financially on its reputed UFO
crash was not lost on the citizens of Aztec, who
began their own annual convention celebrating
the UFO. For the first few years, Thomas was
asked to speak, but the invitations dried up after
he explained the hoax: “Since then they really
don’t want to hear what I have to say,” he notes
wryly.
Though many people were disappointed
to find out that the Aztec UFO was a scam, the
story holds important lessons for Thomas,
skeptics and the public at large. It shows how
easily people can be fooled by a wild story
promoted by a gullible reporter—and more
importantly, it shows that just because you read
a best-selling book about a UFO crash
(supported by “top-secret government
scientists”) doesn’t mean it’s true. Or at least
that’s what they want you to think.

fakes who were taking advantage of the public
at large. Famed psychic Uri Gellar appeared on
the show in 1973. Carson himself set up the
props for Gellar’s act without Gellar or his
manager being able to see them before filming.
Despite Gellar’s claims of having genuine
mental powers, he was unable to reproduce his
usual tricks with the props that Carson
provided. This method of proving Gellar a fraud
had been suggested by Carson’s friend James
Randi, a trained stage magician (like Carson
himself) who later appeared on the show in
1987 to expose the supposed faith healer Peter
Popoff. Though Popoff claimed that his
knowledge of the audience’s problems came
from “Godly visions”, Randi provided Carson
and his audience with video that showed
Popoff’s wife describing the people for him to
heal via a microphone which broadcast to a
speaker hidden in his hearing aid.

Walter Frederick Morrison, 90, the
inventor of the Frisbee, died February 9th at his
Utah home. The Southern California toy
company, Wham-O, has sold more than 200
million Frisbees to date. "That simple little toy
has permeated every continent in every country,
as many homes have Frisbees as any other
device ever invented," says Morrison's attorney,
Kay Mclff.
Wham-O also sells such popular toys as
the Hula Hoop, the Water Wiggle and the Super
Ball. Fred Morrison signed a contract with
Wham-O in 1957, essentially selling the rights
of the 'Frisbee' for over a million dollars plus
future royalties.
I would argue that a good amount of
Morrison's royalties were awarded in the latter
1960s, when the 'Youth Movement' (often
referred to as the Hippies) adapted the Frisbee
as their official sport. Suddenly every longhair
from Sacramento to Timbuktu was hanging out
their local park and spending hours throwing the
'Pluto Platter' in the air for their faithful dog to
catch. Dog participation is the centrifugal force
in this new recreational sport.
It's easy to get ourselves on dicey waters
when tracing the precise provenance of this
'flying disc,' but I will provide a basic outline of
the birth of this marvelous outdoor flying
saucer. In order to quell many myths
surrounding the Frisbee's invention, Fred
Morrison co-authored a book with a historian,
Phil Kennedy, "Flat Flip Flies Straight! True
Origins of the Frisbee," published in 2006. (The

The intrinsic controversy lies with a
Wham-O employee, Ed Headrick, who really
refined the Frisbee in the 1960s to its current
design. Headrick's did away with the space
theme and added concentric grooves that helped
to smooth out the disc in flight. I have
personally observed a lack of wobble in the
saucer as it descends and lands in the 'bowser
mouth,' who then happily fetches it back to his

It's sad to report that Ed Headrick's
never received one dime in royalties. Oh stop
that! We go back in time now to 1937 now,
when Fred Morrison and his girlfriend, Lucile
"Lu" Nay, had some fun tossing a popcorn-tin
around in the backyard on a Thanksgiving Day
holiday. Once the popcorn-tin got too wasted,

they replaced it with a tin pie plate. I have heard
it called a cake pan also, but I prefer pie plate as
a more accurate description. No doubt, fodder
for academic ink, or a possible dissertation on
this pie verse cake conundrum?
That's important, but let's not get lost in

shall! Anyway, Mr. Morrison and his girl were

John Edward: Hustling
the Bereaved

Superstar “psychic medium” John Edward is a
stand-up guy. Unlike the spiritualists of yore,
who typically plied their trade in dark-room
séances, Edward and his ilk often perform
before live audiences and even under the glare
of TV lights. Indeed, Edward (a pseudonym: he
was born John MaGee Jr.) has his own popular
show on the SciFi channel called Crossing
Over, which has gone into national syndication
(Barrett 2001; Mui 2001). I was asked by
television newsmagazine Dateline NBC to
study Edward’s act: was he really talking to the
dead?
The Old Spiritualism
Today’s spiritualism traces its roots to
1848 and the schoolgirl antics of the Fox sisters,
Maggie and Katie. They seemed to
communicate with the ghost of a murdered
peddler by means of mysterious rapping sounds.
Four decades later the foxy sisters confessed
how they had produced the noises by trickery
(Nickell 1994), but meanwhile others
discovered they too could be “mediums” (those
who supposedly communicate with the dead).
The “spiritualism” craze spread across
the United States, Europe, and beyond. In
darkened séance rooms, lecture halls, and
theaters, various “spirit” phenomena occurred.
The Davenport Brothers conjured up spirit
entities to play musical instruments while the
two mediums were, apparently, securely tied in
a special “spirit cabinet.” Unfortunately the
Davenports were exposed many times, once by
a local printer. He visited their spook show and
volunteered as part of an audience committee to
help secure the two mediums. He took that
opportunity to secretly place some printer’s ink
on the neck of a violin, and after the séance one
of the duo had his shoulder smeared with the
black substance (Nickell 1999).
In Boston, while photographer William
H. Mumler was recycling some glass
photographic plates, he accidentally obtained
faint images of previous sitters. He soon
adapted the technique to producing “spirit
extras” in photographs of his clients. But
Mumler’s scam was revealed when some of his
ethereal entities were recognized as living
Boston residents (Nickell 1994).
The great magician Harry Houdini
(1874-1926) crusaded against phony
spiritualists, seeking out elderly mediums who
taught him the tricks of the trade. For example,
while sitters touched hands around the séance
table, mediums had clever ways of gaining the
use of one hand. (One method was to slowly
move the hands close together so that the
fingers of one could be substituted for those of
the other.) This allowed the production of
special effects, such as causing a tin trumpet to
appear to be levitating. Houdini gave public
demonstrations of the deceptions. “Do Spirits
Return?” asked one of his posters. “Houdini
Says No-and Proves It” (Gibson 1977, 157).
Continuing the tradition, I have
investigated various mediums, sometimes
attending séances undercover and once
obtaining police warrants against a fraudulent
medium from the notorious Camp Chesterfield
spiritualist center in Indiana (Nickell 1998). The
camp is the subject of the book The Psychic
Mafia, written by a former medium who
recanted and revealed the tricks of floating
trumpets (with disembodied voices), ghostly
apparitions, materializing “apports,” and other
fake phenomena (Keene 1976)-some of which I
have also witnessed firsthand.
Mental Mediumship
The new breed of spiritualists-like
Edward, James Van Praagh, Rosemary Altea,
Sylvia Browne, and George Anderson-avoid the
physical approach with its risks of exposure and
possible criminal charges. Instead they opt for
the comparatively safe “mental mediumship”
which involves the purported use of psychic
ability to obtain messages from the spirit realm.
This is not a new approach, since
mediums have long done readings for their
credulous clients. In the early days they
exhibited “the classic form of trance
mediumship, as practiced by shamans and
oracles,” giving spoken “'spirit messages’ that
ranged all the way from personal (and
sometimes strikingly accurate) trivia to hours-
long public trance-lectures on subjects of the
deepest philosophical and religious import”
(McHargue 1972).
Some mediums produced “automatic”
or “trance” or “spirit” writing, which the entities
supposedly dictated to the medium or produced
by guiding his or her hand. Such writings could
be in flowery language indeed, as in this excerpt
from one spirit writing in my collection:
Oh my Brother-I am so glad to be able to come
here with you and hold sweet communion for it
has been a long time since I have controlled this
medium but I remember how well used I had
become to her magnetism[,] but we will soon
get accustomed to her again and then renew the
pleasant times we used to have. I want to assure
you that we are all here with you this
afternoon[-]Father[,] Mother[,] little Alice[-
]and so glad to find it so well with you and we
hope and feel dear Brother that you have seen
the darkest part of life and that times are not
with you now as they have been . . . .
and so on in this talkative fashion.
“Cold Reading”
By contrast, today’s spirits-whom John
Edward and his fellow mediums supposedly
contact-seem to have poor memories and
difficulty communicating. For example, in one
of his on-air séances (on Larry King Live, June
19, 1998), Edward said: “I feel like there’s a J-
or G-sounding name attached to this.” He also
perceived “Linda or Lindy or Leslie; who’s this
L name?” Again, he got a “Maggie or Margie, or
some M-G-sounding name,” and yet again
heard from “either Ellen or Helen, or Eleanore-
it’s like an Ellen-sounding name.” Gone is the
clear-speaking eloquence of yore; the dead now
seem to mumble.
The spirits also seemingly communicate
to Edward et al. as if they were engaging in
pantomime. As Edward said of one alleged
spirit communicant, in a Dateline “He’s
pointing to his head; something had to affect the
mind or the head, from what he’s showing me.”
No longer, apparently, can the dead speak in
flowing Victorian sentences, but instead are
reduced to gestures, as if playing a game of
charades.
One suspects, of course, that it is not the
imagined spirits who have changed but rather
the approach today’s mediums have chosen to
employ. It is, indeed, a shrewd technique known
as “cold reading"-so named because the subject
walks in “cold"; that is, the medium lacks
advance information about the person (Gresham
1953). It is an artful method of gleaning
information from the sitter, then feeding it back
as mystical revelation.
The “psychic” can obtain clues by
observing dress and body language (noting
expressions that indicate when one is on or off
track), asking questions (which if correct will
appear as “hits” but otherwise will seem
innocent queries), and inviting the subject to
interpret the vague statements offered. For
example, nearly anyone can respond to the
mention of a common object (like a ring or
watch) with a personal recollection that can
seem to transform the mention into a hit. (For
more on cold reading see Gresham 1953;
Hyman 1977; Nickell 2000.)
It should not be surprising that Edward
is skilled at cold reading, an old fortunetelling
technique. His mother was a “psychic junkie”
who threw fortunetelling “house parties,” one of
the alleged clairvoyants advising the then-
fifteen-year-old that he had “wonderful psychic
abilities.” He began doing card readings for
friends and family, then progressed to psychic
fairs where he soon learned that names and
other “validating information” sometimes
applied to the dead rather than the living.
Eventually he changed his billing from
“psychic” to “psychic medium” (Edward 1999).
The revised approach set him on the road to
stardom. In addition to his TV show, he now
commands hundreds of dollars for a private
reading and is booked two years in advance
(Mui 2001).

The news came as a surprise to Pope
Alice as Papa Benny (Benedict XVI) had
previously condemned those who defend their
copyright. The Roman Pontiff (Papa Benny)
criticized the struggle for copyright as “a
phenomenon, which contradicted the notion of
mutual help and Christian love to other people”.
Pope Alice, speaking in A Flat Major,
reminded Papa Benny of Matthew 22:21,
“Render unto Caesar the things which are
Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are
God’s.” Pope Alice, an extraterrestrial spiritual

Exploration and
Colonization

Humans are no strangers to ravaging the

land, but the stars have proven a good deal more
elusive. So far, our ethical concerns have
remained limited to the contamination of
extraterrestrial environments, but what will the
future bring?
Last night I attended a lecture by Jesuit
Brother Guy J. Consolmagno, a U.S. research
astronomer and planetary scientist at the Vatican
Observatory. He gave a very engaging talk
about the ethics of exploration and planetary
astronomy, touching on two particularly
noteworthy items:

Asteroid Mining

Can you put a price tag on an asteroid?

Sure you can. We know of roughly 750 S-class
asteroids with a diameter of at least 1 kilometer.
Many of these pass as near to the Earth as our
own moon -- close enough to reach via
spacecraft. As a typical asteroid is 10 percent
metal, Brother Consolmango estimates that
such an asteroid would contain 1 billion metric
tons of iron. That's as much as we mine out of
the globe every year, a supply worth trillions
and trillions of dollars. Subtract the tens of
billions it would cost to exploit such a rock, and
you still have a serious profit on your hands.
But is this ethical? Brother
Consolmango asked us to ponder whether such
an asteroid harvest would drastically disrupt the
economies of resource-exporting nations. What
would happen to most of Africa? What would it
do to the cost of iron ore? And what about
refining and manufacturing? If we spend the
money to harvest iron in space, why not
outsource the other related processes as well?
Imagine a future in which solar-powered robots
toil in lunar or orbital factories.
"On the one hand, it's great," Brother
Consolmango said. "You've now taken all of
this dirty industry off the surface of the Earth.
On the other hand, you've put a whole lot of
people out of work. If you've got a robot doing
the mining, why not another robot doing the
manufacturing? And now you've just put all of
China out of work. What are the ethical
implications of this kind of major shift?"
Brother Consolmango also stressed that
we have the technology to begin such a shift
today; we'd just need the economic and political
will to do it. Will our priorities change as Earth-
bound resources become more and more scarce?

class asteroid or a Martian moon and spreading
it over Mars' pole caps. In theory, this feat
would create the sort of drastic global warming
we're hoping to avoid on Earth. Coated with
dust, the poles would then absorb even more
solar radiation than before, causing them to heat
up and release carbon dioxide. Atmospheric
pressure would increase. The resulting
greenhouse effect could possibly raise
temperatures to facilitate stabilized liquid water.
This could lead to lakes, oxygen and a
successful seeding of plant life. Eventually,
Arnold Schwarzenegger would be able to take
his space helmet off without his eyeballs
exploding.
But what are the ethics of this (the
terraforming, not the eyeball thing)? What if
Mars already contains hidden life? Might the
origins of life on Earth trail back to the red
planet as well? Thoroughly contaminate
everything and we might erase all trace of what
was. And the past isn't the only thing potentially
at stake.
"Here's a deeper question," Brother
Consolmango said. "What if there is no life on
Mars or Titan or some other place we're going to
go to, but all the ingredients are there, such that
at some future time life could exist. The
potentiality of life is there and, by terraforming
it, we're aborting that possibility. Under what
circumstances is that an ethical thing to do?"

the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan but includes
facilities and sites where uranium weapons were
manufactured or tested including Vieques;
Puerto Rico; Colonie, New York; Concord, MA;
Jefferson Proving Grounds, Indiana; and
Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
Therefore medical care must be
provided by the United States Department of
Defense officials to all individuals affected by
the manufacturing, testing, and/or use of
uranium munitions and for consequent
exposures to all of the hazardous materials
released as result of combat operations. If we
hope to prevent long term adverse health and
environmental effects thorough environmental
remediation also must be completed without
further delay. Although, we can never return
affected areas to prewar pristine conditions we
must take immediate actions to mitigate the
hazards.
I am amazed that seventeen years after
was I asked to clean-up the initial uranium
weapons mess from Gulf War 1 and that over
twelve years since I finished the depleted
uranium project that United States Department
of Defense officials and others still attempt to
justify uranium munitions use. How can the
leaders of the United States and England claim
to be acting to provide "freedom" to the citizens
of nations we invaded, and now occupy, when
their actions have caused millions of casualties
and extensive environmental contamination? I
am dismayed that Department of Defense and
Department of Energy officials and their
representatives continue personal attacks aimed
to silence or discredit those of us who are
demanding that medical care be provided to all
casualties and that environmental remediation is
completed.
A review of available casualty data such
as "Analysis of VA Health Care Utilization
Among U.S. Global War on Terrorism (GWOT)
Veterans Operation Enduring Freedom
Operation Iraqi Freedom VHA Office of Public
Health and Environmental Hazards October
2007," reveals that over 263,000 American
military personnel have been diagnosed with
medical problems that are related to toxic
exposures including food and water
contamination.
A review of the United States
Department of Veterans Affairs Gulf War
Veterans Information system 'GWVIS' May
2007 report reveals that out of 696,842
Americans who participated in Gulf War 1 as of
May 30, 2007 only 620,266 are still alive and
that at least 280,623 of those left alive have
applied for lifetime medical care because
exposures to battlefield toxins.
Sadly United States leaders did not learn
and consequently a review of the same casualty
data reveals that as of May 30, 2007 out of the
1,129,340 American military personnel who
deployed to the Gulf only 963,083 remain alive
while at least 407,911 individuals have applied
for lifetime medical care.
According to casualty data published in
the recent issues of a Army Times at least
29,395 Americans have been wounded in action
(WIA) and at least 4000 have no been killed in
action (KIA). Obviously the majority of all
casualties are classified as "disease and non-
battle injuries" (DNBI) and unrelated to actual
combat actions but are related to the complex
toxic exposures. While Army Times editors
report that 89,360 Iraqis have been killed other
estimates range from 600,00 to more than 1
million.
The number of Iraqi and other casualties
who would be classified as disease and non
battle injuries remains elusive but must be
proportional to United States DNBI casualties.
These numbers are staggering and can never be
justified .
Verified medical problems include:
Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Malignant
Neoplasms, Benign Neoplasms, Diseases of
Endocrine/Nutritional/ Metabolic Systems,
Diseases of Blood and Blood Forming Organs,
Mental Disorders, Diseases of Nervous System/
Sense Organs, Diseases of Circulatory System,
Disease of Respiratory System, Disease of
Digestive System, Diseases of Genitourinary
System, Diseases of Skin, Diseases of
Musculoskeletal System/Connective System,
Symptoms, Signs and Ill Defined Conditions,
and Injury/Poisonings.
Beyond these diagnosed medical
problems we must look at what will happen in
the future because of extensive air, water, soil,
and food contamination. It is obvious that war
with the use of today's weapons such as uranium
weapons and consequent releases of complex
toxic materials causing immediate and eternal
adverse health and environmental effects can no
longer be justified. Consequently, it is
imperative the President of the United States
ensures:
1. medical care for all casualties;
2. thorough environmental remediation;
3. immediate cessation of retaliation
against all of us who demand compliance with
medical care and environmental remediation
requirements;
4. and United States military personnel
cease the already illegal the use (UN finding) of
depleted uranium munitions.

ABOUT DR. DOUG ROKKE
Doug Rokke earned his B.S. in Physics
at Western Illinois University followed by his
M.S. and Ph.D. in physics and technology
education at the University of Illinois. His
military career has spanned 4 decades to include
combat duty during the Vietnam War and Gulf
War 1.
Doug served as a member of the 3rd
U.S. Army Medical Command's Nuclear,
Biological, and Chemical (NBC) teaching,
medical response, and special operations team,
the 3rd U.S. Army captured equipment project

Britain releases new UFO
files
London, England (CNN) -- A hovering
Toblerone and a silky-white residue join near-
misses and strange lights in the British
government's latest release of its files on UFO
sightings.
Made public Thursday, the files are the
fifth collection of records about unidentified
flying objects to be released by the Ministry of
Defence and The National Archives as part of a
project to open the files up to a wider audience.
Thursday's release is the largest so far,
totaling more than 6,000 pages of material from
1994 to 2000.
The files include a sighting by a man in
Birmingham, England, in March 1997. He said
he came home from work at 4 a.m. to see a large
blue triangle-shaped craft hovering over his
back garden.
It was silent but caused dogs in the
neighborhood to bark, the report said. It "shot
off and disappeared" after about three minutes,
the report said, leaving behind a "silky-white
substance" on the treetops, some of which he
saved in a jar.
It was not clear what happened to the jar
and its contents.
Another document, from January 1997,
is about a man driving home through south
Wales one night when he saw "a 'tube of light'
coming down from the sky," which at first
seemed like a "massive star" coming toward
him.
The man's mobile phone and car radio
failed, the report said, and the man got out of his
car and was able to walk through the light. It
said he got back in his car but started feeling
sick, and he soon developed a skin condition for
which he had to see a doctor.
His car was left covered in dirt and dust,
the report said.
Other reports are about sightings by
groups of people, including one from August
1997 in which five members of a fishing trawler
in the North Sea reported seeing a round, flat,
shiny object hovering in the sky.
They saw it both with the naked eye and
through binoculars, with the report noting,
"witness very skeptical of UFOs." They tracked
the object on their radar for several seconds
before it vanished, the report said.
Police officers in Boston, England, and
Skegness -- both on England's east coast, caught
a UFO on video at the same time that the Royal
Air Force (RAF) detected an "unidentified blip"
on their radar, the files show.
It happened in October 1996, when the
officers saw "strange rotating red, blue, green
and white flashing lights in the sky," the report
said. A ship in The Wash, a bay near Boston,
also saw the lights, and at the same time RAF
air defense radars picked up the blip over
Boston, the report said.
Press coverage of the incident led the
RAF to look into the lights, later identifying
some as stars and bright planets, and attributing
the radar blip to a "permanent echo" created by
a nearby church spire.
The release highlights how the reported
shapes of UFOs have changed during the past
half-century, the National Archives said. Many
of the reports in the latest file describe UFOs as
big, black and triangular, whereas reports from
the 1940s and '50s tended to be about saucers or
disc-shaped objects, they said.
"In the 1950s the next big leap in
technology was thought to be a round craft that
took off vertically, and it's intriguing to note that
this is the same period when people began to
report seeing 'flying saucers' in the sky," said

He pointed out that in the years covered
by the latest file release, triangle-shaped U.S.
stealth bombers and Aurora spy planes featured
heavily on TV shows like "The X-Files" and
movies like Independence Day.
"It's impossible to prove a direct link
between what people are reading and watching
and what they report as UFOs, but one
interpretation could be that the latest advances
in technology may be influencing what people
see in the sky," he said.
A craving for chocolate may have
influenced another sighting, that of a
"Toblerone-shaped" UFO hovering over
Annandale, Scotland, in July 1994. The
Toblerone is a triangular-shaped Swiss
chocolate candy bar. The files include a sketch
of the object, which showed it as 35-40 feet long
and about 20 feet wide.
It hovered silently about 10 feet above a
field with no lights and was "observed for at
least 40 minutes," the report said.
The release also contains several
incidents involving UFOs and aircraft, such as a
near-miss that happened in January 1995 when
a British Airways Boeing 737 was approaching
Manchester airport. The captain and a crew
member saw the object, but an investigation by
the Civil Aviation Authority failed to identify it,
the report said.
An airliner near Glasgow Airport saw
white and red flashing lights in December 1996,
but the report simply concluded there was no
RAF activity in the area at the time.
Churchill demanded UFO

LONDON — Hundreds of UFO
sightings by Britons, including one who
developed a skin condition after a supernatural
encounter, emerged in files out Thursday which
also show Winston Churchill's interest in the
issue.
The most unusual of the newly
declassified Ministry of Defence files tells how
a man in Ebbw Vale, south Wales, claimed his
car was surrounded for five minutes by a "tube
of light" in 1997.
The man, who reported the incident to
police, was sick the next day and also developed
a mysterious skin condition.
"First sighting seemed like a massive
star moving towards the car," the previously top
secret police report said.
"Having stopped the car and switched
the lights off, the light encircled the car,
remaining for perhaps five minutes.
"(The man) was able to walk through the
light which was very bright. There was no
sound, no aircraft or helicopter noise, and
besides feeling ill (he) was very frightened."
The newly released files span 6,000
pages and cover the period 1994 to 2000.
They were released alongside another
file dating back to 1952 which showed then
British prime minister Winston Churchill
requesting a briefing on UFOs from his
secretary of state for air.
"What does all this stuff about flying
saucers amount to? What can it mean? What is
the truth? Let me have a report at your
convenience," he wrote.
In the reply, Churchill was told that
alleged UFO sightings could be explained by
earthly phenomena such as optical illusions,
mistaken identification of planes, birds and
balloons and deliberate hoaxes.

other UFO spottings.

Chelsea Football Club's Stamford Bridge
ground in southwest London in 1999, while a
man in Birmingham, central England, saw a
blue triangle hovering over his garden late one
night in 1997.
That alleged alien craft flew off quickly,
leaving behind a "silky-white" substance on
nearby treetops which the man collected in a
jam jar.

England, said the latest files showed how the
shape of reported flying saucers had changed in
recent decades.
This could be linked to sci-fi television
shows and films like "The X Files" and
"Independence Day", he said.

He also said that California’s legislature
passed a similar ban, and that alone was reason
enough for Virginia to avoid doing the same thing.
“If Virginia is starting to use California as our
legislative role model, it’s a sign that our legislative
apocalypse has arrived,” Brink told the Free Lance-
Star.
Nevertheless, Cole’s bill was approved
by the House of Delegates last week.
