LAND USE
mapping new york's extensive land use patterns
Being a built up city, New York was always going to have a huge variety of
land uses mased together with some patterns coming to light. NYU can now be
easily identified in the north-west part of the map. It is interesting to note the
scattered industrial uses that still litter an inner city neighbourhood such as
this one. There is a significant amount of mixed use in the area which is a
trademark land use type for New York.

BUILDING HEIGHTS
MAPPING NEW YORK'S EXTENSIVE BUILDING HEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
New York is an old city with a variety of different building ages (refer to
building age map) thus certain styles of architecture promote certain building
heights. Tall building heights are constructed around the two main streets of
Lafayette and Bowery that cut through the site, these buildings are typically
not residential also. Residential areas seem to promote a low building height.

ROAD HIERARCHY
NEW YORK'S TAKE ON THE GRID
New York's road network resembles something of a grid pattern, especially in
the residential dominant areas. What is fasinating about New York's road
pattern is you get these wide dominant roads that just cut through the grid at
whatever angle suits, this makes for some interesting blocks around the city
such as the block where the Flatiron building resides.
