Chapter 1
Introduction
Most of the time, students give their attentions and efforts
on different activities in school, since these are parts of their
lives

as

student.

They

are

much

concerned

with

their

examination every term period (in college). Probably, they have

different kinds of preparation onto their examinations, and they
also

consider

the

level

of

difficulty

of

the

exam

that

the

teacher/instructor will give to his students. Evaluating ones

self-

abilities in order to make a better result of his or her exam.

Each individual performs where they can find their selves
comfortable and the best way they use to be; like of those
students who take a review for a long period of time or advance
reviewing, others review for only a short period of time or rushhour, it takes only a few hours before the examination will
begin, and a some are neither of the two.
One of the most difficult and decisive courses worldwide is
the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. Individuals who took this
course had passed a very unconditional challenge to become a
professional.
In the Philippines, many students aspire to become competent
Certified Public Accountant but only few passes this milestone of
professionalism. All accountancy students always raise in their
minds is the CPA Board Examination. CPA Board Exam is one of the
most

crucial

examinations

to

get

license

and

those

three

letters after their names, CPA.

Here in Colegio de Dagupan, there are different courses
offered. One of those is the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

Many Certified Public Accountants produced by this institution.

One of the best examples is Mr. Marc Francis Cagaoan who passed
the CPA Board Exam bagging the 4th place nationwide. In the First
Year

BS

in

Accountancy

in

CdD,

there

are

3-Blocks.

The

instructors are Ms. Ludemin Arzadon and Ms. Ailene Nolasco.

Most of the First Year BSA students of this institution have
different types of study habits. The results of their exams are
also differing from each other, same through if students have
different instructor from other blocks.
This

research

is

very

much

concern

with

the

relationship of the time preparation of students to the result of

their examination and the level of difficulty of the given test
by their instructor to all BS in Accountancy 1 of Colegio de
Dagupan.

Statement of the Problem

This research paper attempts to determine the relationship
of the prelim and midterm scores of First Year BSAccountancy
students to their length of review preparation and the degree of
difficulty of exam. Specifically sought to answer the following
questions:
1. Is there a significant relationship between the prelim and
midterm scores and the length of review preparation?
2. Is there a significant relationship between the prelim and
midterm scores and the degree of difficulty of the exam?
3. What are the specific relationships among the variables?
Hypothesis
1. H0- There is no significant relationship between the prelim
and midterm scores and the length of review preparation.
2. H1- There is a significant relationship between the prelim
and midterm scores and the length of review preparation

Conceptual Framework

This research paper entitled Relationship of the Prelim and

Midterm scores of first year BS Accountancy students to the
Length of Review Preparation and to the Degree of Difficulty aims
to determine the relationship of the length of review preparation
and the degree of difficulty of the exam to the corresponding
scores of BSA-1 students in that particular exam. It also aims to
provide

information

that

will

help

students

decide

on

what

studying strategy will yield the best results for them.

The raw data needed for the research, namely; the length of
review preparation (in days), degree of difficulty (to be rated
by

exam

makers

1-10)

and

the

Prelim

and

Midterm

scores

of

students, will be acquired through surveys and interviews. After

will be done with the Degree of difficulty and the prelim and
midterm scores. Then after performing the tests the results will
be analyzed and evaluated. Based from the analysis of the results
the researches then will draw their conclusions.

Significance of the Study

This study was a significant endeavor in informing the
readers about the effects of review preparation and the degree of
difficulty of exam to the scores of First year BSAccountancy
students. The researchers believe that the result of this study
would help them determine that the effects or impact of longtime
reviewing or cramming, to their scores.
Results could benefit them to have insights of how the
difficulty of exam affects the score of the students or if it

really affects the scores. The useful and relevant information

acquired from the study will encourage them to be considerate to
what a degree of difficulty of exam can bring to the highness of
their scores. It will likewise serve as a basis for a more
effective way of reviewing to have good score. Lastly, this study
will contribute to the betterment of the review habits of the
First year BSAccountancy students.

Scope and Delimitations

The research study will be conducted from December 2013 up
to March 2014. Research proceeds shall be limited within the
realms of Colegio de Dagupan. Research materials shall be
provided by the researchers as well as the statistical analysis
for the research. Raw data will be collected from BSA Students
and faculty. The Prelim and Midterm Exams which will be evaluated
in this study shall be the exam in the accounting subject of the
students in the 2nd Semester which is Fundamentals of Accounting
2. The raw data shall be tested using Pearson r correlation
coefficient test and conclusions will be based from the result.

Definition of Terms
These are words used in the study.
a. Relationship-

this

refers

to

the

state

of

being

interrelated or related to something. In the study, it is

measured

through

the

use

of

statistical

tools

particularly the Pearson R Correlation.

b. Review Preparation- it is the act of re-evaluating past
lessons as for preparation for examination, etc. In the

study, it is defined as the length of time allotted by

BSAccountancy students for exam preparation
c. Degree of Difficulty- The intensity of how difficult a
particular thing is. Whence, in this study it is defined
as

the

level

of

the

difficulty

as

perceived

by

the

examiner particularly the instructors whos giving the

test.
