beginning and the end, a kind of permanem meaning: earth, fire and water intervene and, in addition,
baked clay and ceramics have been presem since the
dawn of our civilization. It is something deeply
primitive, which has been used since time immemorial,
whose potemially innumerale set of possible results
become polarized in fundamental and opposing aspects
that govern the spectrum of the possible: either the
utensil or art; either work or metaphor; or the concrete object or symehsis; in other words it is either
the vessel or the idol.
Water is also fundamental to his world, as it has always
been in our civilization, and roots are importam for
this artist. First the Romans, then the Arabs and now
the Valencians have channeled it along irrigation ditches and devoted their effons to distributing it. Though
in short supply, thanks to systems of irrigation it has
made a fertile agriculture possible. It need not surprise
us, then, that we find in his sculptures so many
references to this element and to encounters with it
in work: the canal, the water hoist, the water wheel,
the foumain, irrigation, things which, on the other
hand, are so deeply rooted in our agriculture and form
such an integral part of our landscape.
Construction is not only a theme in his work, as it would
have to be in his cities, but also an end in itself. And
these constructions, ranging from hieroglyphics to
puzzles, from the elaborare to the simple, play with
pyramids but never with temples, with vertical
elements but never with classical columns, with factory complexes and engineering works but never with
capitals, cornices and frontispieces. At a far remove
from the sophisticated games of postmodernism, it is
nevertheless not perfection and order he seeks, the two
ways to approach classicism. On the contrary, in his
creation there is an attitude to an extem spontaneous
and uncomaminated that opts for origins: the earth,
work, sex, construction. He goes far beyond the latter's functional aspect, however, and reaches an
aesthetic reflection on it using a kind of metalanguage.
Several sculptures confirm this: Mirador, Pequea Esquina, Construccin Inclinada, Remate con Chafln,
Desde la Vntana, Puerta Entreabierta, Muro con Corazn, Esquina con Muro.
Perhaps the public fountain he built in Valencia provides
clues to certain aspects of his art and his latest work.
