SYMPHONY IN THE CITY 3

G
GREETINGS

ELCOME TO ATB FINANCIAL

SYMPHONY IN THE CITY!

I think theres a very good chance Im speaking to

two very different kinds of patrons for this unique
and special weekend. Firstly, theres our fiercely loyal
Edmonton Symphony audience the ones who
make our regular Symphony Under the Sky festival
one of the most enjoyable dates on my calendar year
after year, the ones who love great music in the great
outdoors, and who are looking forward to once
again welcoming your orchestra to a fabulous and
scenic spot in Edmontons great outdoors.
But because Symphony in the City is also three
FREE evenings of great entertainment, I hope
that many of you reading this are here seeing the
amazing musicians of your Edmonton Symphony
Orchestra for the first time. The ESO is one of
many treasured and important cultural institutions
in which this community should take enormous
pride, and youre about to find out why. I hope
youll look through the rest of this program, and get

to know your amazing orchestra a little better.

And what can I say about the music? Two nights
of the magical, generation-spanning music from so
many classic Disney film scores then we finish off
under the High Level Bridge, with another beloved
Edmonton ensemble, the McDades, adding their
Celtic edge to the music of the ESO. Having Light
Up the Bridge and Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture is
the ultimate cherry on top!
My wife Nora and I are thrilled to be back making music with all of these wonderful musicians,
and to share it with you. And congratulations
to Edmonton for hosting the 2014 Transcanada
Corp. International Triathlon down at the ESOs
usual Labour Day venue, Hawrelak Park. We look
forward to being back next year, but for now, lets
get this thing started!

OUR CONDUCTOR

OBERT BERNHARDT brings a unique

perspective and ability each time he is on

the podium, and in every genre. He is currently
Principal Pops Conductor with the Chattanooga
Symphony and Opera (where he was Music
Director for 19 seasons) and is in his 18th season
as Principal Pops Conductor of the Louisville
Orchestra (and in his 33rd consecutive season
there). Formerly, he was Principal Conductor of
the Rochester Philharmonic, Music Director and
Conductor of the Tucson Symphony, Principal
Guest Conductor of Kentucky Opera, Music
Director and Conductor of the Amarillo Symphony,
and Artistic Director of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta.
The 2012-13 season marked Mr. Bernhardts
20th anniversary with the Boston Pops, which he
first conducted at John Williams invitation in 1992.
He has also been a frequent guest conductor of the
Baltimore Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the
Dallas Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops, the Seattle
Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Houston
Symphony, the Tucson Symphony, the Santa
Barbara Symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic,
and the Pacific Symphony. He has been a guest
conductor with many others. A lover of opera, he
conducted productions with Kentucky Opera for
18 consecutive seasons, and for 19 seasons with
his own company in Chattanooga, as well as many
guest conducting engagements with the Nashville
Opera. He received his masters degree with honours
from the University of Southern Californias School
of Music, studying primarily with Daniel Lewis. He
received his bachelor of fine arts degree from Union
College in Schenectady, NY, where he graduated Phi
Beta Kappa, summa cum laude, and an Academic
All-American baseball player. He and his wife, Nora,
both dog lovers, live in Signal Mountain, Tennessee,
with their rescued cat, Shoogie.
Since making his ESO debut in May 2006,
Bob Bernhardt has become a favourite with the
orchestra and its audiences. 2014 marks his ninth
consecutive season leading the ESO at its outdoor
festivals, and he frequently conducts performances
in ESO subscription series concerts and specials.
He will conduct the Robbins Pops performances
on October 31 and November 1.

the National Anthem for the LA Kings (twice!),
The Boston Celtics, and the Texas Rangers!
Outside of performing, Arielle founded The Girls
Camaraderie Project, a non-profit organization
that inspires camaraderie and community, instead
of competition, among middle-school girls.

NDREW JOHNSON is a Disney kid at

heart and is humbled and honoured to

share the music and magic from the stage! He
has toured all over the United States, Europe,
and Asia, as a lead vocalist and dancer, and his
performances have been broadcast on national
and international television. You can currently
catch him as a background vocalist and dancer on
FOXs The X Factor. He most recently performed
on The Conan OBrien Show in the comedy spoof
Broadway Rap Musicals: Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, &
Vanilla Ice and performed with Florence and the
Machine at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.
His other theatrical credits include Rent (Benny),
Five Guys Named Moe (Four-Eyed Moe), Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Joseph,
Asher), Godspell (Jesus), and Pippin (Lead
Player). Andrew has shared the stage with singers/
actresses Shirley Jones and Bernadette Peters, and
has performed live duets with recording artists
Patti LaBelle and Erykah Badu and singer/actress
Jodi Benson (the original voice of Ariel in The

Little Mermaid). He just recently released his new

EP on iTunes entitled Elevation, under his artist
name Drew Michael. He would like to thank his
family for their unconditional love and support
and Ted Ricketts for the opportunity of being
part of this show.

ARON PHILLIPS is very excited to be part

of this wonderful production. Aaron is an

Ovation Award-nominated actor/singer, proud
member of Actors Equity, and can frequently be
seen on film and TV. Past theatre credits include:
Jekyll and Hyde (John Utterson), Batboy: The
Musical (Batboy/Edgar), Songs for a New World,
and Les Misrables (Foreman/Combeferre). Opera
credits include: La Bohme with the Greensboro
Opera Company, conducted by Valery Ryvkin,
Pirates of Penzance (Pirate King) and Lakm
(Frederic) by Dlibes. Aaron recently appeared
in a staged reading of The Bone Wars (OConner)
with the prestigious New York playwright group,
Youngbloods. You may have seen Aaron as
Carl, half of the duo that is the face of Lipton
Iced Tea. He is also an accomplished voice-over
talent and can be heard in video games such as
World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead
Redemption, and Lord of the Rings. He is a man of
many voices for commercials, cartoons, and music
sessions everywhere. Aaron has been a Disney fan
his entire life, and is happy to help bring this music
to fans of all ages.

unching through the walls of tradition,

THE MCDADES Celtic-rooted music fuses
the spontaneity of jazz improvisation with infectious
global rhythms. Their cutting edge sound is the
perfect complement to their fiery performances. At
the heart of the group are siblings Shannon, Solon,
and Jeremiah, who grew up playing Canadian folk
music alongside their parents and among artists
from around the world, a unique upbringing
that led to a love and respect for all music. Their
groundbreaking compositions and innovative
arrangements are characterized by stunning
virtuosity and a near-telepathic interaction on stage.

CELTIC COLOURS
WITH THE MCDADES

The siblings are joined by Montral musicians

Simon Marion and Eric Breton. The musical
diversity of this tight five-piece celebrates the
very idea of what it means to be a Canadian
musician. The McDades were winners of the 2007
Juno Award for Best Group Roots/Traditional
ON_Phantom_ESO_Ad.pdf

Album, the 2007 Independent Music Award for

Best World Album Traditional, and winners of
the 2006 Canadian Folk Music Award for Best
World Group and Best Instrumental Group. This
past June, Solon and Jeremiah McDade received
distinguished alumni awards from Grant
MacEwan University. With vocal harmonies that
can only come from a family, and an obvious love
for each other and their music, The McDades
sound is immersed in the spirit of improvisation.
Featuring both energetic instrumentals and
sensitive vocals performed in English and French,
this compelling and dynamic group find their
groove somewhere between a down-home kitchen
party, a jazzy after hours club, and a folk festival.
(London Free Press)
The McDades last appeared with the ESO in December 2012.

D
DID YOU KNOW?

s this your first time at an Edmonton Symphony

Orchestra performance? If so, welcome! Were
delighted that Symphony in the City, presented by
ATB Financial, has provided us with an opportunity
to make new friends, and expose hundreds of people
in our community to the beauty and fun of live,
orchestral music.

Some things you might not know about the ESO:

Both the ESO and the Winspear Centre are
not-for-profit arts organizations administered by a
volunteer board of dedicated community leaders.
Each year, the ESO performs about 85 concerts
from classical to rock and everything in between.
In addition, the orchestra accompanies performances by Edmonton Opera and Alberta Ballet.
As part of its mandate, the ESO is a community

leader in music education and outreach. Nearly

all of the members of the ESO also teach music
throughout the capital region, whether privately
or through institutions such as the University of
Alberta, Grant MacEwan University, and elsewhere.
Each year, the orchestras Education Concerts
series presents entertaining and engaging concerts
tailored to specific age ranges and programmed to
tie in to appropriate education curricula, for nearly
30,000 students from all over northern Alberta.
Tickets sales to ESO performances make up only
a fraction of the costs needed to keep the ESO a
vibrant and important part of the citys rich cultural
mosaic. We rely on the generosity of government
funders, corporate support and private donations
from thousands of your fellow residents of the
Edmonton area.

WED LOVE TO TELL YOU MORE PERSONALLY.
