INSTRUCTION MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
Relay type JRD 011 is a software based, single pole, instantaneous restricted earth fault relay
which finds application in restricted earth fault protection of generators and transformers and
protection where immunity to operation on harmonic frequency is essential.
The salient feature of the relay is that it works on the High impedance principle. An external series
stabilizing resistor is used with this relay to make it a voltage operated relay. The voltage setting of
the relay is adjusted to be higher than that developed by the current transformers under maximum
external fault conductions. The relay circuit is tuned to the supply frequency to reject the
harmonics produced due to CT saturation.
Detailed description and specifications of the relay are given in our publication no. JR 901.
The terminals of external connections are at the rear of the relay. For details of wiring, please refer
to the enclosed wiring diagram of the relay, WD/JRD 011/E/03
FRONT PLATE
A replica of the front panel of the over current relay is given in the enclosed drawing no. FA/JRD
011/E/03
It will be seen that this panel contains the switch for the current setting adjustment, LEDs (Light
Emitting Diodes) for various indications, relay RESET push button and TRIP push button. The
button portion of this panel forms the name plate in which the following details are given.

IMPORTANT NOTE
After completion of setting or after carrying out any changes, the RESET push button should be
pressed once to accept the set value. The operation of the push button is confirmed by the glowing
of all the LEDs.
C. LED Indications
1. Aux.Supply: This is a Green LED and the glowing of this LED indicates that the auxiliary
supply is healthy and that the power supply convertor of the relay is ON .
2. Relay Trip: This is a Red LED and the glowing of this LED indicates that the relay has
completed its operation and energized the final output element. This LED is reset by
pressing the RESET push button after the relay is de-energised.
D. Output Relay Contacts
These are Self Reset type contacts and the contact combination is as indicated in the relay wiring
diagram. The output relay resets as soon as the relay is de-energised and the Self Reset contacts
also reset automatically. Only the LEDs will continue to glow till they are reset by pressing the
RESET button.
E. Adjustable variable resistor
The relay is supplied with an external stabilizing resistor which can be mounted inside the panel
having a rating of 100W and adjustable between 0 and 100 ohm for 1A relay and between 0 to 600
ohms for 5A relay. [Please refer drawing no. Z0418007 (A) & Z0418051 (A)].
The ohmic value of the resistance can be adjusted by varying the resistance between fixed point
and variable point.
TESTING
a) Set the current value at 5% of the rated CT secondary current and set all the switches to
0. Slowly increase the current through the relay till the relay trip LED glows. Once the fault is
cleared the relay has to be resetted using RESET push button.
Repeat the tests for other current settings of 10% and 40%.
DESCRIPTION OF CIRCULATING CURRENT PRINCIPLE
The stability of circulating current protection scheme or high impedance current balance scheme is
achieved by setting the operating voltage of the relay higher than that developed by current
transformers under maximum external fault conditions.
It is assumed for calculating during through fault conditions, asymmetrical fault current takes one
of the current transformers in the balancing group into saturation and reduces the impedance of
this current transformer to mere resistance. The remaining current transformers maintain their
ratio.
The maximum voltage across relay terminals is given by
Vr = If (Rct + 2 RI) ------(1)
Where RI Lead resistance between relay circuit terminals and current transformers
Rct Secondary winding resistance of current transformers
If Secondary current of CT corresponding to the maximum through fault current of the protected
equipment
We have to set the relay to have an operating voltage Vr
Vr=Is (Rr+Rsr)
Where Is The setting of the REF relay
Rr The impedance of the REF relay
Rsr Value of the external stabilizing resistor
The impedance of type JRD 011 relay is constant irrespective of the relay setting. It is 200 milli
ohms for 1A relay and 20 milli ohms for 5A relay.
Assuming the relay to be rated for 1A and its setting is 10%, Is=0.1A.
Hence Vr = 0.1 (0.2 + Rsr) = 0.02 + 0.1 Rsr
Rsr = Vr 0.22 / 0.1
Let us assume that CT ratio = 100 / 1A, Rct 1 Ohm, If-10A and RI 0.5 Ohms
Vr = If (Rct + 2 RI)
= 10 (1 + 0.5 * 2)
= 20 volts
Rsr = (20-0.02) / 0.1 = 200 ohms (approx.)
= 440 x 10 = 4400 A
CT ratio = 500 /1 A
If = CT secondary equivalent of maximum through fault current
= 4400 / 500 = 8.8 A
The relay operating voltage is hence calculated using the formula (1)
MAINTENANCE
The relay being fully static and software based without any moving parts does not require routine
maintenance to ensure proper operation. It is sufficient to conduct calibration tests at intervals of
about 12 months. Note down all the set values of the relay before starting the testing.
The procedure for carrying out the tests would be the same as given under pre-commissioning
tests. After routine testing, the relay chassis should be put back into the case and the front cover
should be securely fixed. The RESET push button should be pressed once to check that all LEDs
are glowing and also to ensure that the final settings have been entered in the relay
