Electronic position transmitter

RWG 4020
RWG 5020 Ex

Technical Information

Features of the electronic position transmitter RWG

Application
If a continuous feedback signal of the
valve position is required, an electronic position transmitter RWG can
be used. The signal may be transmitted to
a remote position indicator
an external positioner
an integral positioner (actuators
for modulating service with motor
controls AUMA MATIC)

Areas of application
The electronic position transmitter
can be employed in the following
AUMA multi-turn and part-turn actuators:

Two versions are available:

RWG 4020
RWG 5020 Ex (explosion proof)
The electronic position transmitter
provides a continuous current signal,
which corresponds to the actual
valve position.

Version RWG 4020 in actuators

AUMA NORM:
SA 07.1 to SA 48.1
SAR 07.1 to SAR 30.1
SG 05.1 to SG 12.1
and in AUMA MATIC:
SA 07.1 to SA 16.1
SAMEx 07.1 to SAMEx 16.1
SARMEx 07.1 to SARMEx 16.1
SG 05.1 to SG 12.1
Version RWG 5020 Ex in actuators AUMA NORM:
SAEx 07.1 to SAEx 40.1
SAREx 07.1 to SAREx 16.1
SGEx 05 to SGEx 12

The version RWG 4020 can be operated as a 2-wire, 3- or 4-wire system.

The version RWG 5020 Ex is intrinsically safe and can be operated as a
2-wire system in hazardous areas.

Function & features

The electronic position transmitter
continuously monitors the valve
travel. The valve movement is transmitted via a reduction gearing1) within
the actuator to a high quality precision
potentiometer. In the electronic board
the feedback is converted into an
analogue current signal, whose
range may be set to 0 - 20 mA or 4 - 20
mA.
1) The reduction gearing must be selected
to suit the valve travel i.e. number of
turns or amount of swing angle.

A slip clutch protects the position

transmitter from being damaged, in
the event of the potentiometers max.
rotation being exceeded.
In multi-turn actuators for modulating
duty, the slip clutch is additionally fitted with a spring to minimise backlash.
On-line setting with integrated
measuring points
Measuring points on the electronic
board allow the connected RWG to
be adjusted without having to take it
out of circuit.

Settings and adjustment

Settings and adjustment
The electronic position transmitter is
set at the factory according to the signal range specified by the customer.
For subsequent adjustments, e.g.
with an indicator instrument, the setN

ting instructions below have to be followed.

After mounting the actuator to the
valve or during commissioning, the
setting has to be checked and read-

justed, if necessary.
Specific safety instructions as applicable for such equipment must be
observed.

On-line setting

Setting for 2-wire system 4 - 20 mA and 3-/4-wire

system 0 - 20 mA
1. Move valve to end position CLOSED.
2. Remove cover plate.
3. Connect ammeter for 0 - 20 mA to measuring
points. In end position CLOSED for 3- and 4-wire
system value is normally 0 mA, for 2-wire system
4 mA.
4. Turn potentiometer (R2) clockwise to initial position. Turn potentiometer (R2) whilst observing a
decreasing output signal until stop is felt.
5. Turn trimmer potentiometer (N) clockwise, until
output current starts to increase.
6. Turn back trimmer potentiometer (N), until a residual current of approx. 0,1 mA (or 4,1 mA in the
case of a 2-wire system) is obtained. This ensures
that the signal remains above the dead and live
zero point.
7. Move valve to end position OPEN.
8. Set to end value 20 mA with trimmer potentiometer (M).
9. Approach end position CLOSED anew and check
minimum value (0 mA or 4 mA). If necessary,
readjust.
10. Refit cover plate.
11. Clean sealing face, check O-Ring, apply a thin film
of non-acidic grease to sealing face.
12. Fit and fasten switch compartment cover.

- 20 mA appears directly in the

ammeter display.

Setting for 3- and 4-wire system 4 - 20 mA

1. Move valve to end position CLOSED.
2. Remove cover plate.
3. Connect ammeter to measuring points.
4. Turn potentiometer (R2) clockwise to initial position. Turn potentiometer (R2) whilst observing a
decreasing output signal until stop is felt.
5. Turn trimmer potentiometer (N) clockwise, until
output current starts to increase.
6. Turn back trimmer potentiometer (N), until a residual current of approx. 0,1 mA is obtained.
7. Move valve to end position OPEN.
8. Set to end value 16 mA with trimmer potentiometer (M).
9. Move valve to end position CLOSED.
10 Set trimmer potentiometer (N) to initial value
4 mA. This results in a simultaneous shift of the
end value by 4 mA so that the range is now 4 20 mA
11. Approach both end positions anew and check setting. If necessary, readjust.
12. Refit cover plate.
13. Clean sealing face, check O-Ring, apply a thin film
of non-acidic grease to sealing face.
14. Fit and fasten switch compartment cover.

Notes
Inverse signal

Note:

Interchange the connections red (RD) and black (BK) at

the potentiometer for inverse signal.

If the maximum value of the output current 20 mA is not

reached, check whether reduction gearing with correct
ratio has been fitted.
