The OmniStar GX2 is a fiber optic broadband transmission platform for headend and hub
locations that supports advanced broadband hybrid-fiber/coax telecommunications systems. The
OmniStar GX2 platform includes a complete line of headend fiber optic products designed to
transport video and data signals in CATV systems and related applications. The OmniStar GX2
platform is flexible in its application and includes a series of modules and options that you can
select to accommodate system requirements.
This manual describes the Motorola GX2-OA100B* series (see Table 2-2 for more information) of
Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs). These optical amplifiers are designed for use with the
GX2 series of 1550 nm directly or externally modulated transmitters. This amplifier and
companion transmitter are 1550 nm fiber optic analog transmission products and are excellent
for long-haul trunks and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) architectures. They also
support applications for direct distribution to multiple nodes.
With adjustable output and several nominal powers (+13 dBm, +16 dBm, +18 dBm, +20 dBm,
+22 dBm, and +24 dBm) the GX2-OA100B* accommodates link budgets for most trunk
applications. Equipped with three operating modes, the GX2-OA100B* satisfies a wide range of
system design requirements.
You can control the GX2-OA100B* locally through the GX2-SDU100B Shelf Door Unit (SDU) or
the GX2-CM100B front-panel local Ethernet port. Remote monitoring and control is available
using an Element Management System.
The GX2-OA100B* single-pump models are housed in 1-wide modules while the double-pump

Overview
OmniStar GX2 equipment is designed for increased rack density, reliability, ease of operation,
and computer-aided troubleshooting through extensive status monitoring. All OmniStar GX2
application modules are accessible and replaceable from the front of the GX2-HSG* equipment
shelf, resulting in low time-to-repair. An installed module mates with the equipment-shelf
connectors for signal interfacing and power. Fiber connections are made at the front of a
module.
The OmniStar GX2 housing incorporates blind-mate connectors that enable all option modules
to be hot swapped without removing the RF cables. When modules are replaced with power
applied to the equipment shelf, ensure that all laser hazard warnings provided in Section 3,

Module Description
The GX2-OA100B* 1550 nm optical amplifier is a high power EDFA that provides more optical
power than would be available from the transmitter alone. Typical applications use the
amplifier directly coupled to the output of a GX2-DM* or GX2-EM* series laser transmitter, or
as a repeater to provide more downstream power. This enables an increased number of feeds or
increased transmission distances. In many cases, it replaces the need to retransmit, as has been
customarily done with 1310 nm technology, to obtain the same distances. This application
provides improved carrier-to-noise (c/n) performance without distortion degradation.
The GX2-OA100B* is available in several models that include various output powers with either
SC/APC or E2000 optical connectors.
Table 2-2 identifies and describes the models available to suit your application:

Overview
2-3
The GX2-OA100B* 1-wide, single-pump models listed in Table 2-2 use a single 980 nm pump
laser. The GX2-OA100B* 2-wide, double-pump models use a 1480 nm pump laser. The pump
laser power and the length of the erbium doped fiber (EDF) is dependent on the output power
and noise figure requirements. To minimize pump power requirements and signal path losses,
wavelength-selective couplers are used to combine the pumps and optical signals.
Optical tap couplers are provided at the input and output of the EDFA to couple off a portion of
the optical signal and present it to a photodiode for monitoring purposes. The optical power
measured by the output monitor is also used by the control electronics to regulate the amount of
pump power delivered to the EDF. This feature stabilizes the output power against input power
variations and pump aging. Optical isolators prevent degradation in performance caused by
reflections in the system.

Unpacking the module and recording the model number, serial number, and other related
information
DANGER!
OmniStar GX2 modules can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). The use of an appropriate wrist ground
strap is strongly recommended. A ground connection is provided on the power supply module.
Lint-free swabs
Unpack the GX2-OA100B* and inspect it for damage. If damaged, set it aside in its original
packing material and contact the TRC for further instructions. See Section 1, Introduction.
Record the model number, serial number, and related information for future reference. This
information is located on the side of the module.
3-2
No connections are required on the rear panel of the GX2-HSG* to install and operate the
GX2-OA100B*. However, before you insert the GX2-OA100B* into the GX2-HSG*, you need to
perform some basic cleaning procedures on the optical interfaces.
It is highly recommended that you perform the following cleaning procedures before you install
the GX2-OA100B* in the GX2-HSG*. GX2-OA100B* installation and routine maintenance
should be performed by properly trained personnel. In all cases, they should be aware of and
observe the following warnings associated with fiber optic equipment:
DANGER!
Laser Hazard! Invisible laser radiation when the module is open and the interlock defeated. Avoid direct exposure to
the beam. Do not look into the optical connector or a fiber connected to the output of a laser module. Laser output is
invisible and eye damage can result.
The GX2-OA100B* is capable of very high optical output power that may be present at the input
and output even when no signal is applied. If a signal source is connected to the GX2-OA100B*,
significant optical power may be present at the output of the EDFA even when it is turned off.
CAUTION!
Handle fiber carefully and avoid sharp bends, strain, or pinching. Avoid contacting the highly polished end of the
exposed fiber at the connector by keeping the protective boot in place when practical.
While some models of the GX2-OA100B* do not have SC/APC type connectors, cleaning
procedures similar to the following are recommended as appropriate for the connector type
installed.

Use the GX2-SDU, local PC interface, or EMS to verify that the reported optical power is
within the expected value.
If the reported optical power is less than the expected value, you may need to repeat the
cleaning procedure or re-verify the measured optical power using an alternative method.
Activate the pump laser(s) by turning the key switch to the ON position.
Using the GX2-SDU, local PC interface, or EMS, ensure that the operating mode is POWER
OUT PRESET (Constant Output).
Ensure that the optical input signal is 3 dBm or greater total power.
Use an optical power meter or an optical spectrum analyzer to verify that the optical output
signal agrees with Appendix A, Specifications.
If the measured power is less than the optical power noted in Appendix A, you may need to
repeat the cleaning procedure or re-verify the optical power using an alternative method.
Section 4
Operation
This section describes the optional SDU with display, configuration, Quick-Swap, embedded
section, and status reporting with the GX2-OA100B*. It also provides information on how to
download new GX2-OA100B* firmware.
Configuration
Before you put the GX2-OA100B* in service, you must configure the unit to meet system
requirements. Use the GX2-SDU100B, local PC interface, or the EMS to navigate to the setup
display that enables you to set the configuration parameters. All settings are stored in NVM so
if powering is removed and then restored to the GX2-OA100B*, the module returns to the
settings in use before power was disrupted.
Operating Modes
The GX2-OA100B* provides six modes of operation relative to the optical output power. The
Preset modes use factory default settings. The Set modes enable you to adjust the operating
parameters. You can view these modes on the GX2-SDU100B by navigating first to MODULE
MODES and then toggling through the six modes listed in Table 4-1.
Table 4-1 identifies and describes each of the GX2-OA100B* operating modes:
Table 4-1
Operating modes
Operating Mode
Description
Maintains the optical output power at the specified preset optical output power
value. The optical output power is maintained at the specified preset optical
power when the optical input power is 3 dBm or greater.
This is the mode for which performance specifications are guaranteed. This is
also the factory default mode.
Enables you to adjust the optical output power, within the predetermined limits,
for specific product applications or performance requirements. The GX2-OA100B*
maintains the optical output power at the value you set. Attempts to set the output
outside the predetermined range will be rejected and the module continues to
operate at the previously set value.
Maintains the pump laser output power at a constant value. The optical output
varies with changes in the optical input power. This mode is factory calibrated to
provide the specified preset optical output power at an input power equal to
0 dBm.
4-2
Operation
Operating Mode
Description
Enables you to adjust the pump laser output power for specific product
applications or performance requirements. The GX2-OA100B* maintains the
pump laser output power at the value you set. In this mode, the optical output
power varies with changes in the input power.
Error checking prevents you from entering a value that is above the maximum
operational output power rating for the pump laser. In this mode, invalid entries
are rejected and the module continues to operate using the previously set value.
Constant Gain
Preset
Maintains the optical gain of the GX2-OA100B* at a constant value. The optical
output power varies with changes in the input power to maintain a constant gain.
This mode is factory calibrated to provide the nominal gain as specified in
Appendix A, Specifications. This mode is used primarily for DWDM applications
as it automatically adjusts the output power when wavelengths are added or
removed. See Using the GX2-OA100B* in DWDM Applications, in this section, for
more information.
Enables you to adjust the optical gain for specific product applications or
performance requirements. The GX2-OA100B* maintains the optical gain at the
value you set, subject to the optical bulkhead/connector loss.
The optical output power varies with changes in the input power. Error checking
prevents you from entering a value that is outside the specified gain adjustment
range. Invalid entries are rejected and the GX2-OA100B* continues to operate
using the previous value.
This mode is used primarily for DWDM applications as it automatically adjusts the
output power when wavelengths are added or removed. See Using the
GX2-OA100B* in DWDM Applications for more information.
Module State
You can activate or deactivate the pump laser(s) through internal control using this function.
Select ON to activate and OFF to deactivate.
Set Point
When using one of the three set modes listed in Table 4-2, you use the set point to adjust the
operating parameter in increments of 0.1. Table 4-2 describes the operating parameter that is
adjusted in each set mode.

Gain Flatness
Gain flatness is defined as the uniformity of gain between multiple wavelength signals being
simultaneously amplified through the optical amplifier. In most DWDM applications, small gain
flatness, or good uniformity, is preferred so that the optical inputs into the optical receivers are
at equivalent levels. The GX2-OA100B* has minimal gain flatness across 1546 nm to 1562 nm
at the specified nominal gain. Gain flatness and nominal gain for the GX2-OA100B* are
specified in Appendix A, Specifications. If the optical amplifier is operated at a gain
significantly different than the nominal value, the gain flatness could change and you may need
to attenuate individual wavelength signals before the optical receivers.
Determine the maximum total optical input power when using the maximum number of
wavelength signals.
To calculate the proper gain level, subtract the maximum total optical input power from the
maximum rating of optical output power as specified in Appendix A, Specifications.
Calculate the gain setting using the following formula:
Gain Setting = Maximum Total Output Power Maximum Total Input Power
Use the GX2-SDU100B, local PC interface, or EMS and select CONSTANT GAIN SET for
the operating Module Mode in the Setup Menu.
4-4
Operation
Use the GX2-SDU100B, local PC interface, or EMS to change the SET POINT to the
calculated gain setting.

MODULE MODE
MODULE STATE
SET POINT
The GX2-OA100B* reads the quick-swap message from the GX2-CM100B, automatically resets,
and re-initializes itself to the same configuration as contained in the message. If the quick-swap
message intended for the GX2-OA100B* is sent to another type of module, the command is
rejected and the module information is not replaced.
Instructions for selecting and implementing the quick-swap mode are provided in the
GX2-CM100B Control Module Installation and Operation Manual.
Embedded Section
The microprocessor section contains memory to hold two separate banks of downloadable
firmware. One of the banks is programmed at the factory. You can change or update download
code by downloading new firmware as described below. The microprocessor internal memory
also stores module information and calibration data that is programmed at the factory and is
read only.
The microprocessor contains digital-to-analog (D/A) and analog-to-digital (A/D) converters that
are used to control and monitor module operation. The module communicates to the
GX2-CM100B control module through the GX2-HSG* backplane.
Operation
4-5
After boot up, cyclic redundancy checks (CRC) verify the integrity of the factory data, alarm
limit data, and the calibration data stored in NVM. An alarm message is sent if any of these
checks fail. If the factory data fails the check, the module continues to operate normally. If the
alarm limit data fails the check, alarm reporting will not occur, but the module continues to
operate. If the calibration data fails the check, the module will not operate.
You have the option of selecting a specific module or all modules of the target type for download.
After you select all options, you can initiate the download.
To download firmware, the local PC interface or EMS must be running and communicating with
the GX2-CM100B. The GX2-CM100B and the EMS perform the following tasks to download the
new firmware:
!
The local PC interface or EMS reads the firmware download file selected by the operator
and verifies the program code CRC. The software reads the target module type and
firmware revision to be downloaded from the file and displays this information for operator
verification.
The local PC interface or EMS transfers the download firmware and selected options to the
GX2-CM100B. The GX2-CM100B verifies that the firmware was transferred correctly and
that the selected options are valid. If the GX2-CM100B detects any errors, it responds with
an error message to the EMS. From this point on, the firmware download is handled
exclusively by the GX2-CM100B.
After firmware verification, the GX2-CM100B begins the firmware download to the target
modules. It monitors the programming of new firmware and reports any errors. It also sends
a message that informs the EMS whether the firmware download was successful or not.
The GX2-CM100B is now ready to reset the GX2-OA100B* to run the new firmware
program. You can determine whether the reboot is immediate or occurs at a later time after
the issuance of a reset command. This option enables you to choose between immediate,
delayed, or scheduled reboots.
4-6
Operation
Status Reporting
The GX2-OA100B* monitors selected parameters during operation and compares the
measurements to a table stored in NVM. When a measurement exceeds the alarm limit or the
user disables a function, the status LED displays the appropriate color and the condition is
reported to the GX2-CM100B control module. The GX2-CM100B displays the appropriate
message on the optional SDU and sends an event message to an optional Element Management
System. If multiple alarms are present, the STATUS LED reflects the most severe one. You can
use the local PC interface or EMS to further isolate fault conditions.
A list of all the EMS event messages and display messages can be found in Appendix C, Status
Reporting.
Section 5
