Reiki Level II
Caring About Others
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen – Making Connections
In the evolutionary tree, humans have always depended on some form of culture for their survival. The culminating
achievement of this has been the development of language skills. Human desire found a way to verbalize itself. It is our
nature to care about one another and to communicate that concern. This is how we’ve adapted and evolved. Reaching
out to others builds the foundation for a healthier self. The dynamic of a successful life is threefold: how well you care
for yourself, how much you care about others and how much you care for others. Trusting that dynamic is what makes
society function.

Reiki Level II is about connecting with the universe outside of us. It’s easy to feel depressed
when listening to the news but there is something that offers hope. As the nervous system
is to the physical body, so too is the extrasensory system to the cosmic body. When we
feel passionate about something, a charge vibrates through us. Like an ocean wave, desire
undulates through the ether of time and space -the nervous system of the cosmos. Desire
(spirit, will, wish, imagination, fantasy) is the cause behind all movement.

Reiki Level I addresses the cause/effect relationship with one’s self. Level II sends positive
thoughts, wishes, desires and imaginings to places, situations and people. Hon Sha Ze Sho
Nen is the symbol that is used for this. It means “May the Buddha, God-self or spirit in me
connect with/to the same in you, to promote harmony, peace and healing.” This symbol
helps the energy to travel unhindered through time and space. The true mind has this
power; it just needs to be recognized and used. Desire brings us together.

“We are discovering that evolution favours cooperation over competition. We know that peace saves resources
squandered in destruction, that networks out-perform markets. In the understanding of human systems, we have
learned that rigidity creates instability, and flexibility creates resilience. Stress forces a system to evolve. The stress of
global convergence is calling for an awakening of the global heart.” (Judith, 1996)

“Compassion does not mean that we have to fix things. Most of the time, we can’t - but rather than turn away, we can
still offer compassion to others.” (Judith, 1996). Sending thoughts and prayers to others makes us feel safer too.

Moving to Level II
If you are doing the Level I exercise program regularly - three times a week or more - you will find that your soles
and palms feel warm and energized; the Lifeforce is intensifying. Energy comes in from the extrasensory nervous
system and circulates throughout the body as Lifeforce. Pranayama intensifies that current. The glow radiates
aliveness, love and passion so it’s good to do Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen after the energization exercise. This quickens
your spirit and aids in uplifting others. Like the focussing dial on a pair of binoculars, passion opens the lens of
consciousness.

Understanding others is In a well balanced personality, passion is channeled into creative and positive activity
being able to imagine that benefits everyone; thus it is seen as a source of great strength. Reiki Level II sits
yourself in their place. between the desire to heal and rebalance one’s self and the transition to caring for
others. This requires courage, confidence, commitment, patience and perseverance.
It is about forging connections and establishing new relationships. It’s not a role that suits everyone. The secret
to offering Reiki lies in knowing if this is something you feel truly passionate about. The distinction is important.
You can nurture people more effectively with a good personal support base; work on this first. Do what you can,
when you can and most importantly, do it from the heart.
Caring about other people, situations and the environment helps us to expand and mature. Community means
having a cooperative spirit and sharing the compassionate power of the heart. The success of Humanity lies in
the generosity of its spirit; giving solidifies its foundation. We offer healing and compassion in distance healing.

Using Symbols
A symbol is a character representation; a reflection of some sort of influential power. Reiki symbols depict different
levels of conscious awareness that focus on certain desires or intentions. Cho Ku Rei represents the desire to know the
true power of yourself; it is through you that the energy flows. Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbolizes the desire to channel
this passion to others.

It is recommended that you draw, etch or paint the symbols on objects of your choosing, such as stones, disks or
pictographs. Just as it was in the time of the ancient shaman, you are asked to personalize the tools that concentrate
the power of intent. The crafts section of a local department store has many good items to use. Some practitioners
make their symbols into jewelry. It’s up to you; the value of your desire is what matters the most. A good tradesman
respects and cares for his tools.

Mastering Intent
Desire or intent1 is the causal interplay between consciousness and matter - the driving force behind movement
and change. It’s the reason you woke this morning and why you’re reading this page. Everything requires intent;
so the saying ‘what is worth doing, is worth doing well’ describes perfectly the necessity of mastering intent.
As heat and cold creates the funnelling effect of a tornado, concentration and focus determines the manifesting
power of desire. The mind loves to focus. Like a magnifying glass, it can take an idea and build it into complex
scientific theory. It can take a quick glance and like a gifted sculptor, shape it into a marriage, home and family.

Conveying desire through the ether is done with the focussing power of the symbol. This concentrates the mind
and eliminates distraction.

Time and Distance

Time is a measurement of activity. For example, it takes 365 days for the earth to revolve around the sun. All activity
in/on the earth during that time is described as its being.. The earth is a planet revolving around a star. This describes
the earth’s doing. Space is the platform upon which doing and being take place. It is described as the having-plane.
Humans describe these as life experience
experience. What happens to us throughout life creates effects on the body. Unresolved
issues and conflicts will continue to play out in the biosphere of being long after an event occurs. So for the most part,
efforts to heal involve treating the effects of time
time, activity and environment.

Consider that cconsciousness experiences activity as stimulation which it stores in the body as
short and long--term memory. This shapes the character structure that protects, defines and
confines us. Our inner child has had years of experience under the control of adults. A lot of
those experiences were confusing while some were harmful.. Both caused the creation of
defensive and rebellious patterns of behaviour.. Some of these can be difficult to outgrow
ou
and become self
self-destructive
destructive and counterproductive. In effect, healing this character armour
sends healing back through time to the child within.2

‘Energy
Energy in, energy out
out’ is the basis of the cause-effect
effect relationship. Pinch someone and
watch their reaction
reaction. Does the response equal the nature of the trauma?
trauma Is it overblown?
Every time something happens there is a consequence
consequence. When energy is held back, it is
considered to be thwarted or blocked, in which case it immediately starts to build a pressure
for counterbalance. In acupressure and acupuncture
acupuncture, this is known as meridian imbalance.. When this becomes chronic
it results in system failure and disease.

These pressures are universal. The Lifeforce is a current that has to be circulated – whether it is an organ function,
function a
solar system, weather system or a rock formation
formation. Try to see it as the Scale of Balance.. It is the drama of life’s
happenings and the alchemy of change.. Whatever happens is the result of this rebalancing process.
process Time and space are
the body, mind, heart and soul,, so change and rebalancing affects them both. Love that is shared in the moment
resonates in the nervous system of Eternity
Eternity, which itself, is seeking rebalance. Working on the issues that bother you
and others is helping to rebalance the universe
universe.

Distance Healing Steps

1. Permission - Healing requires a relationship between a practitioner and a recipient. You are not going to walk
up to a stranger and put your hand on their navel. It’s better to have understanding, knowledge and consent.
consent
In cases where this isn’t possible and you still wish to offer Reiki then you will have to decide.
decide Some things are
common sense. Sendingnding healing to flood victims doesn’t require consent but your neighbour may not
appreciate you sticking your nose in her business uninvited. Try to be sensible.

2. Location – Time and distance healing can be done anytime, anywhere. The essential
ential purpose is to convey the
energy to a place and time of your choosing. This can be done wherever you are able to be comfortable and
focused.

3. Method – Etch or draw the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol (below) on the chosen object. Consecrate the act by
unifying the intent - visualize what you want in your mind’s eye and offer this vision up to the crown atop your
head. Imagine your desire flowing out through the crown to the intended recipient. You may try visualizing the
energy as light or a flame or star. Offer the desire with a silent prayer. Ground yourself (Raku symbol).

Special Terminology
1. The first symbol (1) is the representation of the concept of ‘God-consciousness’ or consciousness that is
present everywhere and ‘Lifeforce’ or Chi.

2. Cho Ku Rei (2) is the first symbol given (Level I) and is known as the Power symbol. It translates ‘put the power
of the universe here.’ It is pronounced (choe-koo-ray). Use it when you feel drawn to do so, either by drawing
it with the hand or finger or drawing it on the palm or intending it silently before placing your intent. You may
chant the name aloud or in your mind. It is good to use it before each session as a centering practice. This is
the first stage of integration or attunement with Reiki energy.

3. Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (3) is the time and distance healing symbol. It means ‘May the Buddha (God-self) in me
connect with/to the Buddha in you to promote harmony, peace and healing’. It energizes the desire to be able
to travel unhindered through time and space. Our true mind channels this power; it just needs to be
recognized and used.

4. Raku (4) is the symbol used for grounding after healings and attunements. Draw it from the top of the head to
the ground. It is said to lift negative attachment (karma) and separate the energies of the practitioner and the
recipient. It is pronounced râcoo.

Your spiritual practice can be demanding at times. We’ve all slacked off or cut down from time to time. The most
important rule to follow is this: you won’t want to complete uncomfortable or unpleasant exercises. However
you decide to manage your exercise regimen, try to enjoy yourself. In the beginning, the exercises will seem too
difficult. Be patient and take your time. This is not a contest. You will be surprised at how much you’ll enjoy the
exercises after you’ve learned to do them without effort or struggle.

Eastern Body Western Mind

In Level I you were asked to read the book Eastern Body Western Mind3 by Anodea Judith. In Level II you are
being asked to begin a process of self-examination. Recapitulation is an ancient spiritual art that requires the
initiate to recollect the memorable points in life to assess patterns and realities that affect the redeployment of
the initiate’s Lifeforce. Freedom is the objective here. Defensive/destructive behavioural patterns make healing
more difficult. This will be an exciting journey, but with many challenging moments. This process opens heart
and mind to inner healing and self-awareness, both of which are vitally important in a practitioner’s life.

Important: Keeping a journal of ongoing insights will greatly increase the depth and success of the reconciliation
process. As you work through Eastern Body Western Mind, you will find that keeping a diary is therapy in itself.
