As the sun began to set on July 16, blankets and chairs filled the Great Lawn at Connolly Park. The crowd sat eagerly, awaiting the
start of Evolution: A Tribute To Journey, the second show in Voorhees Township's 2015 Summer Twilight Series. Two Voorhees residents out to enjoy the show and each others company were Patrick Corrigan and Kimberly Schreiber.

Freeholder Board submits

damage assessment
By Freeholder Michelle Gentek
On June 23, like
many of my neighbors, my home was
damaged and we
lost power for several days due to a
severe super storm
that tore through
the region. Since
that day, the Camden County Office
of Emergency Management has
been working diligently with our
local, state and federal partners to
aggregate the total damage done
by this extreme weather event. At
this point, we are claiming more
than $4 million for reimbursement from the federal government in both public and
individual assistance for the destruction created by high winds
and heavy rains.
The four affected counties of
Camden, Atlantic, Gloucester and
Burlington
have
a
total
damage assessment of over $15
million, which surpasses all baselines for Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA)
support. Gov. Chris Christie has
signed off on a Major Disaster
Declaration and sent it through
FEMA to be signed by President
Barack Obama for federal assistance.
Our professionals have been
surveying the scope of the
damage for weeks coming up with
a real time assessment of damages with local officials, state police and FEMA to justify
reimbursement and federal assistance. This storm event was one
of the worst in scope and severity
for Camden County in modern
era and was the catalyst for significant damage to homeowners and
businesses.

In total thousands
of
trees
were
brought down by
straight-line winds
and power was cut
off to thousands of
residents in the aftermath of the
storm. All public
and private entities
had significant disruptions in their service for up to
10 days from the minute the storm
touched down.
To put this storm into perspective, there were more than 1,000
fire calls throughout the county
that afternoon, compared to an average day of 100 calls for service.
Furthermore, the department of
Public Safety took in 3,522 calls for
service in a 54 hour period during
Hurricane Sandy. On June 23, in a
six hour window, dispatchers took
in almost 70 percent of that volume by recording 2,432 total calls.
I want to thank our first responders for the extraordinary effort
they made during this super
storm and the work that continues to be done by our Office of
Emergency Management together
with all of our partners. My hope
is that the FEMA assistance
process is expedited and done as
quickly as possible so towns, businesses and residents can have
peace of mind and continue to
recover.

Bike MS: City to Shore Ride

thanks committee for support
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
In years past, Voorhees Township has had a stretch of Kresson
Road as part of the Bike MS: City
to Shore Ride, and this year is
shaping up to be no different.
The annual ride, organized by
the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society, raises money for multiple
sclerosis research by having riders tour the scenic towns of
South Jersey, the most popular
route starting in Cherry Hill and
finishing in Ocean City.
That tour includes a stretch of
Kresson Road in Voorhees, and so
at the July 13 meeting of the
Voorhees Township Committee,
City to Shore rider and planner
Jeff Craighead was present to
thank committee and the township for supporting the ride and
to present committee with an ap-

preciation award.
This years upcoming ride,
originally scheduled for Sept. 26
and 27, was rescheduled to Oct. 3
and 4 when Pope Francis announced he would be visiting
Philadelphia during the rides
original September dates, a visit
expected to attract up to 2 million
visitors to the Philadelphia area.
With the ride now a week later
and in October, Craighead said
planners believe the rides impact
to Voorhees will be minimal, as
estimates have the riders traveling on Kresson Road on the Saturday morning sometime from 6:30
a.m. to about 8:30 a.m. or 9 a.m.,
crossing Evesham Road and Centennial Boulevard.
Then on Sunday, riders return
spread out throughout the day.
In support of the ride, Craighead also gave the committee
some statistics regarding multi-

ple sclerosis, saying 2.3 million

people worldwide suffer from the
disease, with 400,000 people in the
United States and 15,000 people in
the tri-state area, which Craigheads chapter supports.
Craighead said his wife has
been one of those people since
1993.
We were introduced to MS
suddenly in our house and got the
diagnosis of an unpredictable
neurological disease where the
myelin in your nerves is attacked
and that interrupts the signal of
information from your brain to
your body, Craighead said.
According to Craighead, the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society spent $50 million in 2014 to
fund more than 300 research projects, with the rest of the money
raised going to help local families.
In 2014 alone, Craighead said
7,000 riders and 1,200 volunteers
worked together to raise $6.5 million, with this years goal even
higher at $6.6 million.
Upon Craighead presenting
committee with a plaque, Mayor
Michael Mignogna thanked him
and the MS Society for the honor
and said the township appreciated all that planners do to promote
the event.
Were proud to be a part of
this event every year, Mignogna
said. Im not sure exactly how
many years weve been a part, but
I know its been quite awhile, and
we will also help promote the
event, so thank you so much on
behalf of Voorhees, and we look
forward to another successful
event.
Those looking to learn more
about the event or who wish to
register as a rider or volunteers
can visit www.bikems.org or call
1 (800) 445-BIKE.
We do encourage people in the
township to get involved, Craighead said.

Voorhees receives state grant

to finish repaving of Laurel Road
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Its soon going to be a little easier for travelers to head off Echelon Road toward Voorhees Town
Center, the Voorhees Branch Library, the Brookdale Echelon
Lake senior apartments or anything else along that section of
Laurel Road.
At its July 13 meeting, the
Voorhees Township Committee
approved a resolution inserting
$219,000 in revenue from the State
Transportation Trust Fund Authority into the townships 2015
budget.
Voorhees Township administrator Larry Spellman said the
revenue would be put toward the
second phase of the Laurel Road
repaving project. The first phase
included repaving the portion of

Laurel Road from the traffic light

at the entrance of the Town Center toward Burnt Mill Road.
If you leave the Town Center
and go to where the library is,
thats Laurel Road, and if you go
right, its pretty and paved and
goes on, and if you go left, its
not, Spellman said. This was
phase two of the grant. Its access
to the Town Center, the library
and some nursing homes.
In addition to the Laurel Road
money grant, committee also
took the first step toward another
road-related change with the first
reading of an ordinance to prohibit parking on parts of Dumont
Circle.
On the westerly side of the
street, parking is prohibited from
Laurel Oak Road 475 feet south,
and on the easterly side, parking
is prohibited from Laurel Oak

Road 190 feet south and again

from a point 375 feet south to a
point 485 feet south.
Spellman said the township
has been receiving complaints of
drivers parking right up to the
stop sign on Dumont Circle next
to Kellman Academy, and it was
blocking other drivers line of
sight.
It comes out of Laurel Oak
Road. Its kind of on a bend, and
people were parking right up to
the stop sign, so as you pulled up
to go out, it restricts your sight
triangle so we painted it yellow
and this codifies the yellow painting, Spellman said.
Another traffic-related resolution on the July 13 meetings
agenda, but one committee ultimately tabled, related to the possiplease see LIQUOR, page 7

Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now
ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of

Any questions?

questions for school leaders about the

new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can

pass along to you.

Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about repairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still providing great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership between schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relationship starts with effective communication.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.

bility of reducing the speed limit

Spellman said the county will
soon be doing some work around
that area, and the township also

the reduction in speed.
According to Spellman, committee decided to table the motion

possible reduction.

made the team, Carnival said. I

was also a little bit nervous because Ive never been on such a
large team.
Carnival said being selected for
the team is the pinnacle of his
lacrosse career so far. Carnival
began playing the sport just a few
years ago.
I started playing in fourth
grade. I played baseball and I didnt really like it that much, so I
transitioned to lacrosse, he said.
Ciampoli picked up lacrosse for
the first time in fifth grade.
I played in Voorhees since
fifth grade and then with TriState Lacrosse in the summer, he
said.
All three of the players are 14
years old and will be attending
Eastern Regional High School in
the fall. They are also all products

MIKE MONOSTRA/The Sun

Voorhees residents Dean Carnival, Nick Ciampoli and Shane Baraldi

have all been selected to the South Jersey U-15 All-Star Team. The
team will play at the U.S. Lacrosse Championship Tournament from
July 23 through 26. Pictured are Ciampoli, left, and Carnival.
of the Voorhees Lacrosse program and play on other club
teams. Trying out for this all-star
team, however, was going to be a
different experience.
Carnival said the tryout was
like a normal practice, with
warm-ups, drills and a full game
at the end of the day. What made
the tryouts different was the level
of competition on the field.
I knew it was going to be a
South Jersey team, but I didnt
know how good the players were
going to be, Carnival said. I didnt really know anyone there.
We have good players on our
spring team, Ciampoli said.
There was just a lot more good
players at this tryout.
The all-star team was selected
earlier in July and has been practicing the last few weeks in preparation. Ciampoli said practicing
with the team has been a beneficial experience so far.
Its definitely exciting, he
said. It is different playing with
some kids who are a year older

than us.
Some of the members of the
all-star team are players who just
completed their first year of high
school. Carnival, who plans to try
out for Easterns lacrosse team
next year, thinks the experience
gained from practice and the
tournament will help him when
he gets to the high school level.
It was a faster pace, he said.
You definitely have a different
mindset practicing with an allstar team rather than practicing
with our spring team.
Ciampoli and Carnival both
said they havent visited Virginia
in a long time and are looking forward to not only playing a lot of
lacrosse, but also having a lot of
fun during the visit.

U.S. Lacrosse Championship
Tournament and to follow the
progress of the South Jersey
team,
