1. List some applications of zener diode.

Zener diode find wide commercial and industrial applications. Some of their common
applications are:

As voltage regulators.
As peak clippers or voltage limiters.
For wave shaping.
For meter protection against damage from accidental application of excessive
voltage.
As a fixed reference voltage in a network for biasing and comparison purposes and for
calibrating voltmeters..
2. Differentiate between Zener Breakdown and Avalanche breakdown.

3. Why is FET called a unipolar device?

In FET current is carried by only one type of charge particles, either electrons or holes.
Hence FET is called unipolar device.
4. Define the delay time and rise time in the switching characteristics of transistor.
In the transistor switching characteristics the deley time is the time that elapses the
application of the input pulse and current to rise to 10 percent of its maximum value.
The time required for Ic to reach 90% of its maximum level from 10% level is called the
rise time.
5. Define Transformer coupling

The output signal of first stage is coupled to input of the next stage through an impedance
matching transformer.

6. Define amplifier

A device which accepts an input signal and produces an output signal proportional to the
input is called an amplifier.
7. Give the comparison between RC and LC oscillators.

8. Write down the advantages, disadvantages and applications of Hartley oscillator.

Advantages:
a) It is easy to tune
b) It can operate over a wide frequency typically from few Hz and several MHz.
c) It is easy to change the frequency by means of a variable capacitor.
Disadvantages:
a) Poor frequency stability.
Applications:
a) it is used as local oscillator in radio and TV receivers.
b) In the function generator.
c) In RF sources
9. What is full-wave rectifier?
A rectifier circuit, which converts both positive and negative half cycle of the input AC voltage
into useful DC voltage, is known as full wave rectifier.
10. What does voltage regulator mean?
An electron, which keeps the output voltage constant irrespective of the variation in load current,
line voltage and temperature is known as electronic voltage regulator.
