PTCL's Dilemma

When PTCL was privatized to UAE owned Etisalat, analysts had a smarter opinion about the future of PTCL.
We were expecting a big boost in its performance and operations with the backing and input of Etisalat like inter-
national company. Unfortunately, since its take over, Etisalat has badly failed to lift the company's image. Stock
exchange has a clear picture of PTCL, how it is working and what people think about it. The company has lost
share value during the recent months.
What is blocking PTCL's way towards the privileged circumstances; policies, incapable team, ineffective man-
agement, shaky leadership, lack of interest, corruption or all of these?
Sometimes, market competition tempers the growth and progress of a business. But in case of PTCL, it had a
sweep chance to take the best out of itself. Today, one can easily be unsure of the regain of the company.
As far as the consumers are concerned the new management has totally appeared to be aliens to them. It's
been a routine activity to come across the news of company’s management which appears to be hardly bothering
to customers' complaints ranging from the rectification of faulted telephone lines, unfair and arbitrary charging of
scratch cards to outage of fully paid internet protocol and bandwidth.
We have examples of phone line rectifications taking months, so it's needless to talk the consumer's connec-
tivity quality. But the plight lies in a fact that the company is paying its deaf ears over the corporate sector and
the regulator.
Now it is clear that PTCL's life line copper buried under the earth has reached its limit. With passage of time,
the growing direct and indirect competition would be quite difficult for PTCL to keep itself rolling. But with having
a positive approach, let's hope, the current re-shuffle of the higher management in PTCL, may lead us to a pros-
perous asset of our country.

Rosenberger Hochfrequenztechnik GmbH & Co was founded in Germany

in 1958 and is ranked among the leading manufacturers of high-speed
interconnect solutions worldwide. To serve the continuous growth and
demand of the global market, Rosenberger Asia Pacific Electronic Co., Ltd.
was set up in China in 1997. Since then, Rosenberger Asia Pacific has been
supplying product solutions to telecommunication, Information Technol-
ogy, automotive, measurement, aviation, and so many others. Ms. Aili Liu,
President of Rosenberger Asia-Pacific was on her four day visit to Paki-
stan. Flare had a chance to discuss local and global telecom situation,
below is the detailed chat we had with her

Flare: How is your visit going on?

Aili Liu: I am enjoying every moment of my
short trip here in Pakistan. This is my first visit
and I can feel Islamabad is such a peaceful
and green city, people here are very friendly
and nice. I feel like I am within my own coun-
try.
Flare: Tell us about your professional
career?
Aili Liu: I graduated from Howard University,
USA, and also got my master degree from
there in early 1980s. After that, I worked for
more than ten years. I joined Rosenberger in
1997, exactly the same time, when Asia-
Pacific operations of our company were
started.
Flare: Please let us know the brief
account of Rosenberger

high value added, cost effective products and

should go in steps. Presently we have no
warehouse in Pakistan. Our first priority is to
setup a warehouse here in alliance with KHL
very soon. This warehouse will shorten deliv-

flexible for customers. After warehouse, we
defiantly have plans to install a manufacturing
plant and then R&D network as well. We will
let our friends, media and the public know
about it, once we approach there.
Flare: How many job opportunities will be
created with this warehouse?
Aili Liu: I don't want to mislead the people. We
are at a pre-mature stage to tell you the
details. In china, for example we have 2 facto-

very spring, the eagerly awaited Basant fever takes Lahore by

E storm, especially in the areas of the Old City. This year Wateen
Telecom held its first large scale corporate event by celebrating a
grand Basant Night on the 24th of February with fashion, music
and wonderful food at the picturesque venue of the Lahore Fort. The
entire area was decked out in vibrant Basant colors, as well as a great
deal of Wateen's signature green and white. There were separate areas
for food stalls and kite flying, as well as dedicated seating for almost
3,000 guests, including 1,200 VIPs and VVIPs.
The event centered around a wonderful lineup of entertainment in tra-
ditional Lahori style, starting with the greatly popular Humera Arshad who
sang number of popular Punjabi songs that rocked the crowd and set the
tone for the rest of the evening. She was followed by the percussions
band Overload, which has a massive cult following due to the charismatic
Farhad Humayun and the enigmatic Pappu Saein. After that the audience
was treated to an extravagant visual experience with fashion shows by
Nikki & Nina with their spring collection, and HSY's Mughal themed collec-
tion, inspired by the works of the mughal poet Kabir. This was followed by
a break for dinner, which consisted
of traditional dishes cooked in gour-
met style. After dinner, the most
awaited part of the evening finally
kicked off with back to back perform-
ances by international stars Atif
Aslam and Sukhbir. The entire crowd
was first spellbound by Atif's slow
ballads, and then was brought roar-
ing to life in true Lahori fashion by
Atif's fast numbers and Sukhbir's UK
Bhangra beats. The show ended way
past midnight and into the early
hours of the morning, and for the
sizeable crowd that remained till the
end it was truly a memorable, well
spent Basant.

Satisfied Mobile Users?

Methodology

Flare' and 'Voice and Data' jointly

conducted Mobile User's Satis-
faction Survey. Medium used
was online (self filled). The sam-
ple base was 6,872 across 253
towns/cities across SAARC (in-
cluding Pakistan, India, Bangla-
desh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan
and Maldives).

We conducted an independent
telephonic validation of 50% of
the respondents to verify their
authenticity. The validation pro-
cess was completed by dialing
the mobile numbers shared by
the respondents in the survey.
Around 98% of respondents
attended the validation calls.
There was less than 1% error for
almost all the seven critical ques-
tions validated.

While looking at the survey find-

ings, two points must be kept in
the mind
a) Internet today broadly repre-
sents the urban areas;
b) around 25% of the mobile own-
ers (in SAARC) also use
Internet, and therefore, the sam-
ples thus selected through online
were definitely representative of
the 'brand conscious' mobile
phone users. We believe that
overall satisfaction is a depend-
ent variable and individual attrib-
utes are independent variables,
either positively or negatively
related to overall satisfaction.

We have therefore used a multi-

ple regression-based model to
derive these contributions and
thereby derived the overall satis-
faction at various level; e.g. all
users and operators.

In order to analyze the overall

satisfaction of the subscribers
with their current service pro-
vider, we took up five broad
areas that contribute to overall
satisfaction presales/sales, net-
work availability, value added ser-
vices, customer care, and billing.
By considering overall satisfac-
tion as a function of the parame-
ters, we arrived at different
weights for these parameters.
These weights were then applied
on the stated scores for satisfac-
tion to arrive at the final scores
for satisfaction.

Top Ten Most Expensive Mobile Phones in the World

U
ntil recently, the vast majority of mobile phones had been priced between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 30,000. Vertu, a division of Nokia, had
been exclusively manufacturing a uber-premium phones, with prices starting at around Rs. 4,800,000 Vertu phones are only for the
filthy rich, and the super famous.
However, Vertu's monopoly of the luxury phone market is coming to an end with the launch of several new luxury mobile makers, including
Gresso, Mobiado and GoldVish. Other mobile phone manufacturers are also partnering with luxury brands to produce a range of premium
mobile phones, such as LG and Prada , D&G and Motorola, and now Tag Heuer and Modelabs. Finally, there are super-expensive one-offs,
made purely for headline grabbing the most eapersire are as under.

Goldvish "Le million" = $1,000,000

A
PR stunt it may be, and they surely can't be expecting to sell
any, but the Goldvish "Le million" is officially the most expensive
mobile phone in the world, according the Guiness Books of
Records. There's even been talk of a $1.3million phone, but this has
fewer diamonds than the Goldvish! The "Le million" is a one off,
featuring a blinding 120 carats worth of VVS-1 grade diamonds,
according to designer Emmanuel Gueit. If $1 million is out of your price
range. The Geneva-based Goldvish also offer several other diamond-
encrusted 18k gold models in your choice of rose, yellow, or white,
starting at a much more reasonable $25,600

Vertu Signature Cobra = $310,000

V
ertu is now taking orders for the Signature Cobra,
designed by French jeweler Boucheron, but if you want
to get one, then be quick as only 8 are being made! The
Cobra will feature one pear-cut diamond, one round white dia-
mond, two emerald eyes and 439 rubies. Vertu will also be offer-
ing a "cheaper" version, ruby free, at $115,000.

Sony Ericsson Black Diamond = $300,000

A
pparently the Black Diamond will be available in this year, not from
Sony Ericsson but by a company called VIPN. Initially only 5
unique numbered pieces will be available for the unbelievable
price of $300,000. With regards to the specifications, don't expect any-
thing remarkable for your money. It will have Quad-band with Wi-If, an
Intel 400Mhz processor running windows mobile 5, and a touch sensitive
screen. It will also include internal memory of 128mb and will come with a
2Gb SD card for external storage, plus a respectable 4 Megapixel cam-
era. The designer Jaren Goh has used some pretty impressive materials
for the build, featuring titane with polycarbonate, mirror-finish cladding
and diamonds.

Vertu Diamond = $88,000

T
he Diamond is Vertu's premium range of high-end mobile
phones. As the name suggests the handsets in the Dia-
mond range are diamond-encrusted handsets made from
platinum. Only 200 of the handsets are being produced, the most
expensive believed to be worth an estimated $100,000.

Motorola V220 Special Edition = $51,800

A
ustrian designer Peter Aloisson, has taken a standard
Motorola, studded it with 1,200 diamonds and added a
keyboard inlaid with 18 carat gold. The outcome is a
$51,800 handset, suitable only for footballers and film stars!

better phone for your extra cash, you wont! The features
found on the Gold Edition are the standard 8800 features, which
are pretty basic. It includes a 0.5 Mega pixel SVGA camera, 64
MB of internal memory, 64 voice polyphonic rigntones, FM Radio,
Mp3 Player, video recording and 180 mins talktime. However, the
Gold Edition includes a special edition box and charging dock!

Mobiado Professional EM (wood) = $1,900

T
he Mobiado Professional EM, is a wood-clad upgrade of their
earlier Nokia-based phone that includes a 1.3 megapixel cam-
era, music player, FM radio, Bluetooth, and according to
Mobiado it's the first production phone with Titanium buttons. Only
200 are being made and each one has its limited number engraved
on the back. At $1,900 however, you're still paying an awfully high
premium for a fairly basic phone encased in wood!

Bang & Olufsen (Samsung) Serene = $1,250 (£675)

B
ang & Olufsen hooked up with Samsung to design the
sleek but unconventional Serene. It's not a bad looking
phone and it even has a built-in motor to assist you in
opening and closing the phone. It's not very practical however,
requiring a special screwdriver to access the battery and the SIM
card, and its circular keypad will take some getting used to. Also,
for some strange reason they have positioned the camera lens on
the side of the device, which will make it difficult to align snap-
shots via the viewfinder on the display.

Lamborghini 8800 Sirocco from Nokia

T
he Lamborghini Nokia 8800 Sirocco is another special edition,
like the previously launch Aston Martin branded Sirocco. It will
ultimately be a standard 8800 Sirocco but with the addition of
the famous Lamborghini logo engraved on the font and the back, plus
ball bearings from the auto company. The Lamborghini phone will be a
limited edition with only 500 being made. It will also feature
Lamborghini graphics as wallpapers, screensavers, ringtones, and
even has a short documentary video about the Lamborghini.

Gresso Luxury Phone = £ expensive

T
he Russia based Gresso, is a new entry into the lux-
ury phone market. Their aptly name "Gresso Lux-
ury Phone" is made of gold and African Blackwood.
Apparently they will be releasing a collection of five mod-
els called the Black Aura collection, and the designer is a
"well known" Italian designer. Currently there are two ver-
sions of the African Blackwood phone, one with pink gold
highlights named the Gresso Blackwood Gold Edition, and
one made entirely of African Blackwood. In addition to the
two African Blackwood phones Gresso also make a phone
made entirely of pink gold named the Gresso Gold phone.
Initially, the phones will be on sale only in Russia.

At first glance, CyberLink's DVD Suite Pro appears to be the end-all, be-all solution for multimedia fans.
You get a staggering array of tools and utilities, giving you the ability to perform a wealth of tasks with an
assortment of multimedia file types. With DVD Suite Pro, you'll receive 10 tools and utilities: PowerDirector
(Express version), PowerProducer, PowerBackup, Power2Go, InstantBurn, LabelPrint, MediaShow, Power-
DVD (Express version), PowerDVD Copy, and PowerStarter. PowerDirector Express and PowerProducer
enable you to capture and then edit or author videos, respectively. PowerBackup, as its name implies, adds
backup capabilities. Power2Go and Instant- Burn variously let you burn data or multimedia file formats to CDs,
DVDs and/or Bluray discs, but not HD DVD as of this writing. LabelPrint lets you create and print labels, and
MediaShow helps you create slideshows.
PowerDVD Express and PowerDVD Copy, make it easy to watch and copy DVDs. The final tool in the box,
PowerStarter, affords access to all the programs from a single interface. Despite the fact that CyberLink pro-
motes the multimedia capabilities of this suite, its heart really lies with video. Audio tools aren't very impressive
and won't give you much functionality beyond what you can find free. Furthermore, the photo editor present in
previous versions is now gone. In addition, each tool has a completely separate program, and even though
Cyberlink unites their icons under a central interface, there is no integration among them. Those caveats
aside, DVD Suite Pro gives you a lot for a minimal outlay. Specifically, PowerDirector Express includes
advanced editing capabilities, as well as Magic Fix tools and built-in wizards, ensuring both old and new hands

THE MAGNETIC REVOLUTION

At the crucial junction of fast growing technologies, where every single bit and second is

to get rid of tedious booting process? Is there any way out to save our precious time,

Tough choices! The V3i is a great phone with TONS of ways

you can tweak and modify it, but it's been out for a while now.

Not to say anything about the form factor as it is

someone's personal preference. But in my opinion, SE
810i is not a bad option because when the screen
fades away, all other keys become inactive and only
the reverse (back key) works; the chances of unknown
dialing are minimized - if that is the reason for buying a
clamshell phone.
In size, V3i gets full marks, while the W810i is also
equally good in size and is not that thick that it would
refuse to enter into the pocket of a skin tight pair of
jeans - if you know what I mean.
The battery meter shows the exact levels so you
may get it recharged before it goes dead. The bars do
not drop suddenly towards the end like they may do in
V3i at times.
Motorola did a great job by embedding iTunes in
the V3i but the fact remains that the slow processor
makes you uneasy when your fingers work fast on the
keys and the response is very slow. You run ahead
and the phone takes a while to follow; a pity that it
does not have an FM radio.
The sound quality in V3i is not that good as
it is in the W810i. Mega bass function rocks
your ears with W810, especially when you are
wearing the head set. Though the headset in
the V3i is USB based, the W810i has a great
headset with music control offering superior
quality sound with the ease of use.
Camera wise W810i's 2 MP defiantly beats
1.23 MP of V3i, with W810i offering auto focus
and flash light for finest quality.
The additional memory of 512 MB gives
you more space to store those great quality
pictures on the W810i and the flash light
comes in handy during electricity breakdowns
at night. Though it consumes a lot of battery
but it's a handy tool in those bad times of no
light.
The firmware used by Motorola is the same
that it was using some four years back.
Another way stated, it is for some one who
wants a new phone with old features. Similarly
Sony Ericsson is required to further enrich their
firmware which is little bettered but enhance-
ment margins are there.

Synchronization is another issue that needs to be addressed. With Motorola the most awful
thing is that you can only use your cable to synchronize it. After installing the sync software
from the CD on your PC, it will prompt you how do you want to connect. You can only choose
between cable and Bluetooth as the third option of IR does not really apply. If you choose
Bluetooth, you will be disappointed by a message that says the software on the phone has to
have the same language as the sync software. God knows what this means but the fact
remains that despite trying so many options I was unable to do it
through the Bluetooth.
W810i on the other hand is a 'Maalai' (cream) on the Bluetooth. It
works just fine for anything you want to. SyncML lets you use your
phone for email through GPRS which the V3i does not let you do
so.

Orascom CEO Quits Hutchison Board

rascom Telecom CEO Naguib Sawiris stepped down as director of Hutchison Telecom

O International Ltd. Although his resignation triggered speculation that Egypt-based

Orascom was likely to sell its stake in HTIL, Sawiris denied the possibility. Asked why he
had stepped down as HTIL director, Sawiris told DNA Money, "the company is less inter-
esting without India." But, he refused to comment on why Orascom would like to hold on to its equi-
ty in HTIL, if it was "less interesting" without India.
In February, HTIL decided to sell its entire stake in Hutch Essar to Vodafone for $11.1 billion.
Following this, Sawiris finds HTIL "less interesting." Michael John O'Connor, Orascom's investment
and business development officer, will replace Sawiris as a non-executive director, HTIL said in a
statement on Monday, but gave no reason.
The HTIL statement said, "Sawiris has no disagreement with the board and he is not aware of any matter relating to his resignation that needs to
be brought to the attention of the shareholders of the company."

Nokia Supplier Perlos Quits Finland Production

innish company Perlos, which makes mobile phone casings for Nokia, is reported to quit production with the loss of 1,132 jobs, as part of a

F bid to return to profitability. As per group's statement the company will discontinue all production operations in Finland and its two facilities in
North Karelia by the autumn of 2007 at the latest. Perlos revealed that it would also cut overlapping functions in the organisation, which will
lead to personnel reductions in other functions in Finland as well, where it employs a further 200 employees.
The Finnish job losses were included in some 4,000 redundancies Perlos announced in January in Europe, Asia and North and South America for
2007, representing a third of its workforce. Perlos has been hit by falling demand from Nokia, traditionally its most important customer, and fierce com-
petition from Asian competitors. The group has said it intends to make savings of 130 million dollars a year from 2007.

QTel to Acquire Kuwait's Wataniya

atar Telecom (Qtel) is to acquire 51 percent of Kuwait's National Mobile Telecommunications Co.

Q (Wataniya) in a 3.7 billion dollar deal. Under the deal, Kuwait Projects Co. (KIPCO) has agreed to
sell its entire 51 percent stake in Wataniya to Qtel for $ 3.7 billion. This deal will be the largest-
ever acquisition by a foreign company in Kuwait. KIPCO is a holding private company, led by the
emir's younger son Sheikh Hamad Sabah al-Ahmad, and is managing assets of around 15 billion dollars. It
was one of the main founders of Wataniya.
Wataniya, which began operations in 1999, is one of two mobile telephone operators in Kuwait. The other
is Mobile Telecommunications Co. (MTC), established in 1983. Wataniya currently operates in northern Iraq,
Tunisia, Algeria and Saudi Arabia, besides winning a licence to operate in the Palestinian territories.
Qtel is 55-percent-owned by the government of the small but gas-rich Gulf emirate of Qatar. It has a GSM subscriber base of 419,000 for a popula-
tion of about 650,000.

Telefonica Looks to Sell off 'Big Brother'

panish telecommunications group Telefonica has declared that it might sell all or part of its control-

S ling stake in Endemol, inventor of the "Big Brother" television format, which it has struggled to fit
into its business. There had been speculation that Telefonica wanted to withdraw from its 75.0-per-
cent interest in Endemol which is capitalised at 3.4 billion dollars. The Big Brother concept, involv-
ing the isolation and continuous filming of a group of people in an enclosed space to make drama out of
human relationships, has become popular with television viewers across the world. Spanish broadcaster
Gestevision Telecinco said it would meet Italian owner Mediaset SpA to mull a potential bid for the Telefonica stake. Telefonica bought Endemol in
2000 for 6.4 billion dollars at the height of the internet technology market boom, but has since had to write down the asset.

Oman to Issue Second Landline Licence

man is in the process of liberalising its telecom sector further by issuing a second landline operator licence, proba-

O bly this year or early next year. The move is not only to encourage healthy competition in the telecom sector, but
also to enhance privatisation and institutional reforms. Telecom major Omantel said that the government was
expected to issue a second landline operator's licence this year. Though the authorities have not fixed a timeframe
for a second fixed line operator, it is learnt that the entry of a second fixed-line operator is imminent.
Four regional international telecom majors had already carried out feasibility studies on landline services in Oman last year. An Asian telecom
major is also exploring the possibilities of seeking a licence for operating fixed-lines, in association with a local firm.
The fixed-line base of Omantel as at the end of December 2006 stood at over 271,000 as against 258,000 as at the end of December 2005. Oman
Mobile no longer enjoys monopoly as a second public mobile licence was awarded to Nawras in 2005. Oman Mobile enjoys a market share of 72 per
cent (1.246 million subscribers). Total mobile phone subscribers in Oman stands at over 1.7 million.

Tandberg TV Talks to Ericsson, Plans Statement

orwegian digital broadcasting systems maker Tandberg Television agreed to a takeover bid from Sweden's Ericsson. Ericsson launched its

N offer of $17.08 per share in cash, valuing the Norwegian company at $1.38 billion and trumping Arris's earlier $1.2 billion cash and shares
bid. Ericsson made its offer on February 26, bidding above the Arris's offer which was launched in mid-January. Tandberg TV shares have
traded above the Ericsson bid level but the stock fell on Tandberg TV's announcement that it recommended the Ericsson offer and was down
2.5 percent at 107.25 crowns at 1057 GMT, still above the bid level.
Ericsson has already secured an 11.7 percent stake in Tandberg TV and has received pre-acceptances for its offer from shareholders with an addi-
tional 15.7 percent of the stock, Tandberg TV said.

Ericsson First in Mobile IP Telephony

ricsson has demonstrated 3GPP IMS multimedia telephony over HSPA on two prototype HSPA feature phones to become world first in

E Mobile IP Telephony. The demonstration was a SIP session capable of supporting flexible media handling of duplex voice and video, in com-
bination with text chatting and file/image transfer in same session. The focus for the demonstration was to show end-user characteristics for
an IP-based multimedia telephony session over HSPA. Anders Norrga, Ericsson's marketing manager for IMS Multimedia Telephony,
described the service as "Because it is IP-based, this new standard is a feature-rich technology. What we want to do with the demonstration is show
operators that we can evolve their telephony networks into multimedia networks based on IMS architecture. This is one solution based on IMS that
can deliver both fixed and mobile IP telephony."
With Ericsson's IMS multimedia telephony solution, operators can evolve their mobile softswitches or AXE or TSS for fixed networks into one
telephony solution supporting a multimedia experience over both mobile and fixed networks.
Standardization bodies 3GPP, on the mobile side, and ETSI TISPAN, on the fixed side, have worked together to develop the converged industry-
wide standard 3GPP/ETSI TISPAN IMS Multimedia Telephony. With Ericsson leading the way, the new standard technology will help operators move
into the future while retaining use of legacy systems.
Norrga says: "This is a convergence technology that offers operators seamless mobile and fixed access, a common core system for mobile and
fixed networks, and multimedia telephony."

Visionet Hired to Scrutinize Loan Defaulters

isionet Systems Inc. has become amongst firms hired by investment-banking firms and investment firms that bought mortgage-backed securi-

V ties to scrutinize sub-prime loan portfolios and identify loans that violate their contracts so they can tell the originators to buy them back, as
per Wall Street Journal. Efforts by several major banks and Wall Street firms to unload bad U. S. housing loans are speeding up a shakeout
in the sub-prime mortgage industry. As more Americans fall behind on mortgage payments, Merrill Lynch & Co. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.,
HSBC Holdings PLC and many others are trying to force mortgage originators to buy back the very high-risk, high-return loans that the big banks
were eager to acquire in 2005 and 2006.
Arshad Masood, President of Visionet Systems Inc., says his company is currently working with three midsize Wall Street firms to audit the loans
they've purchased, identify mortgages that may be eligible for repurchase and make a case for why they should bought back.
Merrill demanded in December that ResMae Mortgage Corp. -- which sold it $3.5 billion in subprime mortgage loans, or loans to borrowers with
poor credit records -- buy back $308 million of loans where the borrowers had defaulted.
But in recent months, as home-price appreciation fell and borrowers faced increasing interest rates, more people defaulted on their mortgages.
That sparked demands by Merrill and others that they have the contractual right to demand the sellers buy back the loans. Under mortgage contracts,
mortgage originators must often repurchase loans that default very early in their lives or that come with underwriting mistakes, such as a flawed prop-
erty appraisals.
